    I know this is an older video but I've gone for the HB8 with the tiniest bit of Ardbeg 10 and water and by golly does it work. I knew Ardbeg was potent but I didn't realise quite how effective it is for adding that beautiful smokey bite with just a few drops. Magic!

    My favourite blending experiments lately have been using some bracing, dry and intense Lot 40 Cask Strength Rye to beef up some light & sweet Canadian blends. Makes sense to me as that it what it was originally made for, to be the main flavouring component in blends.

    This steam coming out of Ralfy's mouth gives so much of an atmosphere! An atmosphere of a lonely Bothy, somewhere in the middle of the Irish Sea, where the magic happens.

    Ralfy, I have got to admit this was one of your best episodes I've ever seen.
    I picked up a bottle of unpeated, 18yr Caol Ila this last weekend and I am tempted to blend it with my Macallan 12yr, Craggenmore 12 or Ardbeg 10 since the Caol Ila is cask strength.

      elkhead01 I can't behave.. I am always blending.. Normally because I have Cheap whisky and a tiny bit of nice whisky...
      I have made a concerted effort to get a number of decent malts and blends ....
      Thanks to Ralfys help in buying cleverly

    " Self generated experience of a one Flyte of Whisky". !!!!!!! My mind is racing !!! Can't wait to test this. I was given a seriously forgettable blend a while ago. Bland and un-noteworthy (Dimple) - but as a base for a Flyte - well now. I have a 12 year old Glenfiddich. A G &McP Caol Isla cask strength, an Adelphi Glen Old 14 year old cask strength, in fact I have 16 seriously good single malts at home. Never ever thought to do this. Oh - the possibilities!!! This IS exciting! Thanks again Ralfy. Ever the fount of knowledge.

    I had a small 40 year old Port..
    I added a couple of drops to cheap Highland Whisky and it gave it a Port Cask flavour... In fact it was NiCER ..

    I came across a 15-year old Drambuie (the one based on single malts) and not being into cocktails I like to add a drop of it to my dram of Ardbeg 10 or Laphroaig 10 for a touch of sweetness. Reminds me of Lagavulin :)

    Ralfy, yet again you bring to my attention a method i have yet to experiment with..I think i'll enjoy doing so.
    But i have a question off topic......What happened to the dalek on your shelf ? He's been watching over you for quite some time now, i just noticed it's presence was lacking? Just curios.

    Just bought the Lidl oddity.
    It is a Blended Malt... 42%, Bourbon Barrelled...oloroso Sherry Butts... AND Portuguese Tawny Port Pipe...
    It has a different Brand Name to their usual Malts..
    ABRACHAN .. same price .. £17.50 or £18.50
    It's Fantastic...
    Nicer than Aldis' Christmas Sherry Casked Highland...
    I just hope it is a permanent thing...
    Ah, it actually names the Distiller and Bottler.
    Clydesdale Scotch Whisky Co.!

    Hi Ralfy....will give this a go with what I currently have at home and see how I get on. This vlog made me wonder if you have ever talked about how to approach whisky festivals. I have been to tastings which have been fun but have not yet been to a festival as I would find it so difficult to know where to start. Apart from socialising and learning I would want to try as many malts that I would find difficult to get hold of normally as I can. Have you done a vlog on this? If not, any tips? Cheers

    *MALT MENTION:*
    Ralfy, I've just picked up a bottle of Shackleton Blended Malt Whisky and I enjoy it very much. The story behind it is very interesting. Sir Ernest Shackleton was an explorer from the early 1900s. He left a case of his personal whisky in Antarctica when he left after his expedition early 1900 circa. This case was recently discovered in a block of ice . 11 bottles total, intact and drinkable. This blend is a reproduction of that whisky. Classic Highland profile. Very reasonably priced at $31 U.S. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this blend!! Cheers!!

    Thanks Ralfy! One of the most imforative whisky class episode ever! I'm about to put my TV set for sale and use the TV shelf for storing more whisky ;) what about vintage Armagnacs ? Do they use colorants same as cognacs?

    • @ralfydotcom
      @ralfydotcom  6 років тому +3

      . . . as far as I am aware, yes, unfortunately !

    • @alexk3088
      @alexk3088 6 років тому +1

      that's a yes on armagnacs also :( to be fair, cognac and armagnac are darker due to virgin casks, so they use colorant to keep consistent color. still, a shame.

    • @gucia1
      @gucia1 6 років тому

      ralfydotcom that's too bad since I love vintage Armagnacs.. although I spoke with Laubade Armagnac producer and he assured me no colorants inside their vintages.

    I was under the impression that the only place you're allowed to spill whisky besides your throat was on Mr. Paterson's carpet. In fact, I find it surprising there is still no sign of Dalmore- carpet matured whisky ...

    Here we go then. My Flyte-in-a-glass.30 ml Dimple Haig 15 year old 40%abv. Left to sit for 15 minutes. Added
    1 inch (of an eyedropper) Glenfiddich 12 year old 40%abv. Left to sit for 12 minutes.
    Added 1/2 inch Adelphi Glen Ord Cask strength (57.2%abv) 12 year old. Left to sit for 12 minutes.
    Finally, added 1 inch Gordon & MacPhail Caol Isla 12year old (46%abv). Left it to sit for another 12 minutes. OMG - what a surprise. Add a wee dash of water - 1 teaspoon only. Subtle peat, very sweet. Sherry was strong but faded over a half hour leaving a sweet sherries smoke with a distinctly floral finish. Exciting. Interesting. Almost seductive. I am definitely going to think about my next Flyte in a glass. I may try combos of three with idea if I get a really good blend I may bottle 3 thirds and leave for a while (not a new idea I know). Thanks again Ralfy.

      Thanks . Yes it did. What really surprised me was how the Caol Isla made it sweeter and yet it is quite heated. Somehow the peat back off and sweetness emerged. Alchemy !!

    Ralfy, I've been enjoying a Blue Nectar "Extra Blend" tequila - a blend of reposado and extra anejo, young, fresh and vibrant + mature and substantial. I wonder if this is practiced in Scotch - blending to get the "best of both worlds", not to reduce price, etc. It wouldn't make sense to sell such a product on its age, it would be young. But it would be "extra" :-) Thoughts?

    I stopped paying the TV licence 2 years ago. I know because I get sent a reminder at least once per month. ...Usually with my name in a RED outline.

      Blank Steve, ah, yes, a TV license. I remember reading about those. isn't there also a radio license?

    • @blancsteve4819
      @blancsteve4819 6 років тому

      Alex K - I have an radio alarm clock that I am not allowed to listen to. If I paid the licence, it would no longer be aginst the rules and would not wake me. I'd have to ask for a refund. Therefore I save myself a lot of bother by never again paying the toff tax.

    Oops. Re -reading my last comment I realised the spell check had altered what I wrote (lack of attention to detail?!).. So, that was of course Adelphi Glen Ord (not old). Thought I should point that out rather than create any confusion amongst other Malt-Mates.

      pewpie99 Awww, c’mon. You’ve never watched a TV show as good as any that Joe has stated above and though, “wow, that was amazing.” - TV isn’t all brain dead Z list celebrities, a lot of is very in depth and analytical depictions of amazing story telling. True Detective, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Ray Donovan - I’ll admit that there’s a lot of shit on TV but there are some stunning gems to be found that are as enthralling as some of the greatest books written and films produced.

    I wonder why you used a feminine spelling for boise. Anyway, I wish they didn't add stuff to cognac and scotch.
    I also think declaring all TV "rubbish" is rubbish itself. I know you were just quoting the opinion of others since you don't watch TV, but still...... Most is, however, I will agree with that.
