I love that the town is embracing you and that you're embracing the experiences! I usually travel alone to Italy, and every single thing scares me - from the bus to the train, ordering food in my still-broken Italian, etc. But you're right in that some of the best experiences might be simple ones but ones that we overcame our fears to do. It certainly isn't always without its hiccups. But the reward and the experience itself far outweighs the fear...not always easy to overcome the fear though.
Traveling alone I think definitely presents a unique challenge. You have to rely on yourself, your phone, and trust that in general people are willing to help.
