  • Cherry MX keyboards switches - They're all different from each other, but what they have in common is they are ALL better than membrane switches. Yuck.

    The first time I heard MX Blue switches when getting into mechanical keyboards it brought back repressed memories of my mom's old keyboard. She could type 136wpm and she did it on a loud clay keyboard and as she was a total workaholic she would keep us awake all night with that constant click and clack.

    • @SPACOD
      @SPACOD 10 років тому +5

      Well, can't say the card is working, that's the part of the reason I bought a 780.
      It was actually a GTX 580 TwinFrozr II that broke on me, not a 570. It worked for some time, then it started showing artifacts everywhere even when booting, causing blue screens of doom and random crashes.
      Not really a card someone would kill another for. I'm not that much of a scum bag to break something so expensive.

      Jayanth Kumar Brown switches are also called "hybrid", it's sort of a mix between blue and red. It's both for gaming and typing, but I don't know if brown is best for MMO, it's more of a all-rounder.

    I started using computers in the early 90's, when all keyboards were mechanical. When membrane (or soft click as we called them) came out, we all switched with no delay. I find it hard to believe you would want to go back to that shit now.

    • @xethaios
      @xethaios 9 років тому +19

      I and many others prefer mechanicals over membrane. I also find it hard to believe that you would want to stay with that shit now, but we all have our opinions.

    • @PSS395
      @PSS395 9 років тому +3

      I think you guys switched to membrance keyboard is because of the bunkyness and loudness of a mechanical keyboard at that time. Also the early 90s there are not many option for switches available, so mechanical keyboard seems to require a massive amount of force to type on. Nowaday you got so many option to choose from, with different layout and switches, making mechanical keyboard much more attractive.

    • @PSS395
      @PSS395 9 років тому

      ***** Yep, they does sell contoured mechanical keyboard. look into the ergodox or kinesis advantage
      As for the loudness of the switch, cherry mx blue (and razer's "green" switches) have both the tactile bump and the click sound, so it'll be loud. if you like the tactile feedback but not the noise, look into the mx brown. If you don't even like the tactile feedback, linear switches like mx red will be more suitable. both of those switches has a lighter activation force than mx blue, so gaming on them is way easier

    • @PSS395
      @PSS395 9 років тому +2

      ***** Yep! they're not always about the click. I personally use a cherry mx brown board and without the click, the lightness of the key and the slight tactile bump still make up for an awesome experience! I can float on the board effortlessly.
      As with the kinesis, it's kinda hard to try out one in person. But kinesis is offering a 60 days no question refund so you can testing out the keyboard, which is pretty sweet.

    • @gizmoguyar
      @gizmoguyar 9 років тому +1

      I completely agree. I absolutely love my membrane keyboard. The key's soft forgiving feel combined with the extremely short keystroke allows me to type almost twice as fast as on a mechanical keyboard. Plus they have a distinct release point where the pressure under your finger drops to almost zero. It allows me to know exactly when a keystroke has registered, and it allows me to rest my fingers on the keys and still know exactly how much force I can apply before they give way.

    @HomoKieran 11 років тому

    He's actually sort of right, with anything other than blues (and its variations such as I think greens and clears) the sound comes from the bottoming out, the key cap hitting the switch housing and/or base plate. If you don't bottom out they can be almost silent. This is why o-ring dampeners exist, they go over the stalk oft he switch and dampen the caps impact making it quieter.

    A 20-second ad is disproportionately for a 2-minute "quickie" video. If the sponsor requires the ad to be that long, then at least do a "donut": a quick teaser intro to the video's topic, then the ad, and then get back to the video content.

    Actually, for a proper typist, failure to "bottom out" is the leading cause of fatigue and RSI. A key switch that is too "soft" also causes problems which is why "cushion-stop" keyboards were phased out in the 80s.

    Here's my input from a game developer; TXAA and FXAA for example are screen-space effects meaning they search for jagged edges and blur them on the screen. Ones such as MSAA are your REAL Anti-Aliasing effects that for the most part produce better results but at a cost of more frames per second. The reason why games switch to using fake SSAAs are because the deferred rendering engines don't support real AA methods without hacks like in Crysis 2/3 but they aren't very efficient.

    The article this video was attached to was very helpful, more so than I found elsewhere. I've been aware of mechanical keyboards for some time but I never invested any time into reading up on them and was not aware of the significance of the various switch types. This video was also helpful with visual identification of the differing switch types. Despite that I found the details listed in the article all the more necessary and I'll be going with brown. Thanks. :D

    Now that I know what a mechanical keyboard is I don't wan't it. I like my keyboards to be as quiet as possible and prefer it for the people I play with too because when you have skype open and play with someone who has a mechanical keyboard it will drive you crazy, well at least it does drive me crazy when I have to hear every key press the person I am talking to is making.

      see the problem is not ur keyboard its the fact that u use skype :P , use something thats worth your while like teamspeak (it has push to talk and voice activation that will only activate your mic when you talk so it wont pick up background noise) there are sooooooo many different kinds of software you can use to talk to friends or other gamers :)

    For anyone curious, chiclet keyboards are just very flat membrane keyboards. The very short distance to press them are not very tiring at all compared to the original bulky keys. Chiclet keyboards are also usually pretty "clicky" and in my opinion are just as fulfilling.

    I still use a Mitsumi KPQ keyboard that's 20-25 years old, and it's clear by now that its key technology (using some rubber cylinders inside) will never appear again. So now I have the choice between recycling someone else's dirty keyboard (knowing that I simply can't find an AZERTY one anymore, and will have to use a QWERTY in AZERTY mode), and to switch to another type of keyboard.
    I'd really like to find out which key technology is best for me. Mitsumi keys activate at the very bottom, quite good to cancel a keypress when you know you've made a mistake (I do that all the time, unconsciously). But there's also something I like, I can press keys by their corners. On other keyboards, I've noticed that pressing keys from their corners would generally block. Switches are also very light.
    From what I understand, none of the Cherry switches activate at the very bottom, it's pretty much always near the middle, and they only vary in force & sound :(

      ***** well 5 of my 7 high end keyboards have non-cherry switches. But probably 100% of people's first mechanical keyboard is a cherry MX board. But people might buy a topre board as a first if it was a little more known. It's not very likely though since topre is expensive and buckling spring is more of a collector thing so yeah, cherry is ubiquitous in the entry level market, but I can tell you that I'm a topre man now.
