The Lucky Hit bit at the end is STILL your best end gag. Nothing will ever top Joe's perfect imitation of the bizarre, flailing animation while flatly declaring "no, that's not it". 25/10. Internet has been won.

I absolutely loved Shenmue. I found a Dreamcast at a garage sale along with a CD book of games for 15 bucks. The graphics blew my mind. Granted, this was in 2008 when I was 16! Yeah, I had a really limited childhood.
I remember putting hours into Crazy Taxi, Jet Grind Radio, Resident Evil: Code Veronica, Unreal Tournament, the demo disk featuring Rayman and Dead or Alive 2, etc. But the one game that really grabbed me was Shenmue. I used to wake up very early before everyone else got up, hook up the Dreamcast to a small white TV along with a pair of headphones, and just get absorbed by the small, sleepy town of Shenmue. The game made you feel like you were on an epic quest, and talking to all the townsfolk and exploring every nook and cranny of the town really immersed me. Also, the music was absolutely amazing! It just perfectly accentuated every scene and made you feel the emotion that coursed through the game's veins. I never played a game like it.
I think that at the time of release, it was undoubtedly a masterpiece and Yu Suzuki's magnum opus. It hasn't aged well, but the muddy, squarish graphics and stiff acting have a charm all their own. I didn't even notice the game's shortcomings after being absorbed into the experience. I think that's what Shenmue is all about. It's about experiencing Ryo's epic tale. It's about following him through to the conclusion. It's also a snapshot of a beautiful place at a certain point in time. When life was simpler and more straightforward. More traditional, even.
The game just feels like a lot of love and care went into crafting it. And I think "crafting" is the best word to describe it here. The world feels like it was built with an attention to detail and a unified passion and vision that you don't see often in games. I remember my mother having to tear me away from it when we had to go out or get something done. It's rare that you come across a game that just grabs you. That just stays with you and eases you along, hour after hour.
If they could remake the first two games, possibly condense and/or alter some of the more boring sections, and release it in a slightly reimagined and streamlined package, with completely redone voice work, I think it would be a hit. Or at the very least a cult classic. They don't even have to aim for the most cutting edge photorealistic graphics. And I'd buy it and play it again and enjoy every minute!

When I was about 16, my younger cousin had gotten his mom to buy him a Dreamcast. Back then they were new, and the first game he got for if was Shenmue. I had read about it in magazines and was ecstatic when I found out he had it! I didn't so much like Shenmue as I was in awe of it. It seemed so far ahead of its time and was the culmination of everything I had hoped for in a videogame. Growing up with the NES and SNES, I always used to think how awesome it would be to be able to wander I to the background of certain games and explore, and here was a game that made that fantasy a reality! It definitely took some getting used to as I sucked at it and never really had the chance to get good at it, but I had such a blast with it and time would fly by while I was playing. Most of the time I would get sidetracked and just go exploring because the world felt so damn alive. I've been able to satisfy that gaming need with games like Oblivion, Fallout 3, and Sky rim to name a few, but back then Shenmue introduced me to what I was really looking for in videogames and for me marked the next step in gaming evolution.

Played Mario 1, Mario 2 (the doki doki panic version), mario 3, world, 64, sunshine, galaxy 1 and 2 a lot, but I never could swallow Yoshis Island. I actually love all the games shown here, but sonic cd in particular is potentially my favourite game of all time. The colours, backgrounds and parallax scrolling are just so immersive for me and work beautifully with the Japanese soundtrack, which is also my favourite ost of all time. The music is just SO FRIGGIN INCREDIBLE especially with the various time zones. I love the time travel and the level design is my favourite in the series, open and explorable. The exploration vibe of the game honestly makes things like sonic 2 feel shallow. So much imagination!! Crazy awesome boss fights!! Anime cutscenes from toie animation!!! The game is just unbelievably perfect to me :) and I love to spread the word

Shenmue was fun to me because it has the aesthetic of an old 70s Bruce Lee flick, earliest game I played besides metal gear solid that felt like a movie was made into a game by someone that was innovative. It of course is a foundation game that has been dissected and surpassed in every way mechanically but just like an old model terminator, it has a few surprises left I bet in the next one

Painmaster212 the dream cast can actually be submitted to 1080 P with an HDMI cable newer dream casts have a port (newer as in fan made)

    • @saturnotaku
      @saturnotaku 9 років тому +1

Painmaster212 It almost looked like they had the Dreamcast version hooked up through VGA and the Xbox through composite. When I had my Xbox, it was connected through component and looked only slightly worse than the Dreamcast. While the smoother framerate of the Xbox version is nice, the slowdown on the DC is part of its charm (and part of the reason the laser breaks on the console because it has to stream so much data).
My European copy of Shenmue II got scratched up thanks to the lousy CD case, so it doesn't work so well any more. As such, I just emulate the game from a ROM where someone spliced the English language tracks from the Xbox into the Dreamcast game. There are some graphic and sound glitches, but the experience is solid overall, especially since the game will run most of the time at 60 fps.

Mmmm, while it is slow in the game, your board is a different size with a different size marble. Even then the time it takes to hit the bottom grows exponentially with the angle, plus you add in the extra friction from the board.
Was just saying, since you were saying it was way different from the game, regardless of how slow the game is, if you do it differently, of course it will be different.

Game Sack actually, since acceleration under gravity is based on the mass of the object in question, you'd get a much slower speed with a ball that had a far smaller mass/volume ration, like a ping-pong ball.
Granted, you still wouldn't get the floaty falling speed, but you'd certainly get comparable descent times.

Although I'm sure someone has mentioned this, the time travel mechanic in Sonic CD is actually quite simple to explain.
    - The Future versions of stages are pretty much there just so you can see them. They don't hold much else, and are usually more challenging.
    - The Past versions of stages are useful if you are looking to create a good future in every stage. The Metal Sonic hologram doesn't do anything, but there's a large laser beam prison thing that if you hit it, it will blow up and all enemies in the stage will be defeated instantly, and make a special sound play. Doing this in every stage will create a good future for each area, and make the boss fight in a good future state.
    - If you collect all Time Stones (CD's version of Chaos Emeralds), you don't need to bother with going to the past at all, as all stages will automatically be a good future.
Basically, doing either of these will give you a good ending. Some people think it's easier to find the laser prison things (robot generators) than trying to navigate the 3D special stages. Simple as that.

I'm in the "love" section for Shenmue, it's the last game I've played that really left me flabbergasted, I just couldn't get over how amazingly life-like it was at the time. I was still in school and it's the only game that ever made me literally run home everyday from school to play it! I still love playing the first game every other year, but the second game is still all too bittersweet for me, the way they left it makes it hard not to well up inside.
Sonic CD is another love, one of my favourites in the series actually, it was the perfect showcase in that Sonic doesn't always have to be about speeding through acts on a linear path (all too common practice since Sonic Adventure). Any fans of Sonic CD, I urge you to check out the first 2 Sonic games on the SMS, they're allot like CD in that most of the levels require exploration, Scrap Brain Zone Act 2 is a good example.

I personally don't really care as I've never played Final Fantasy (the only RPG games I've played for any length of time are Pokémon games(I do want to play through Shenmue I & II someday though)), but FF fanboys really seem to get their panties in a twist whenever someone mentions FF7 - someone seems to think FF7 deserves a metacritic score of 200 (out of a possible 100) because FF7 couldn't be better even if it had a universal cure for cancer built in while someone else seems to think FF7 is the beyond overrated hellspawn that killed their beloved FF franchise because FF6 (or whatever number between 1 and 6) was 9001 times better than every FF after FF6 combined could ever possibly be. Umm...who says Sonic CD is bad? It is pretty much universally acclaimed as the best 16-bit Sonic game ever. There was some debate over the soundtrack, but that is just personal preference. Personally, I think the US soundtrack is more timeless and stands up better to time, whereas the Japanese soundtrack sounds like played-out, early-90's techno, but again, that is personal preference.

I loved Shenmue. It played upon my love of Japan and encouraged me to travel there. It was such an immersive experience. So excited for Shenmue 3.

I really need to give Yoshi's Island the ol' college try; again. Every time I tried to get into it in the past, I found myself whining like Baby Mario. Thank you for the entertainment that is your Lucky Hit bit; some belly-laughs were had. Kudos for recreating the board. Your dedication to the gaming world is second to none!

we put them in the episode guide which is linked in the description. Otherwise we like to keep what we talk about under wraps until it appears onscreen. It's more fun that way unless you're looking for an older episode.

Thanks for the info. Guess I'll have to find a way to mod my Dreamcast. It is an odd little converter disc, but has no problem on SDTVs. Anyway, I started watching these a couple days ago and I absolutely love your work. It's nice to see a series with a sense of humor that doesn't spend the whole time just snarking about the material. You've got a big fan here.

What you are all forgetting about the Sonic CD soundtrack is right in the title...it's a CD, with full redbook audio and this was in the early 90s. I remember finding a discounted Sega CD and popping in Sonic CD for the first time. Compared to the music and sound effects found in Genesis and SNES games, Sonic CD blew me away. While the level design was not as good as Sonic 2, it is still a great Sonic game in my mind.

On a side note, the levels are designed so that you CAN blaze through them (provided you more or less know the way instead of just holding right) yet fit many sections to help you travel through time. Layouts to me are actually very good.
The reason why the music is different is -supposedly- that SOA didn't get the rights from the composers and had Spencer Nilsen (who also did Ecco on Sega CD) write an OST in about.... 6 months.

@Code1D10T Well there will definitely be an "Out Run & After Burner" episode. Maybe we'll put Hang-On in there? Not sure. But there might also be a "Favorite racing games" episode. Daytona would definitely qualify. We haven't figured out exactly how we'll handle it yet, though.

for the sega guy, dude, it's a baby he cries, i know everyone would get him anyways because it's the game's goal to get mario safe through the level, but he is a baby he will cry when alone with monsters
and i think it is a sequel, maybe mario learned all he knows from this journey, who knows?

I listened to an interview with the composer of the American version of Sonic CD on an episode of the podcast VGMpire and I seem to remember him saying the reasoning for the soundtrack difference was that Sega of America wanted to have some input in the creation of the game since everything else for it was done in Japan. It's been awhile since I listened to it, but he did give some explanation over the reasoning.

@Shuda87 Lots of games did it. Silpheed is one. The Genesis does the lion's share of the music and the Sega CD PCM chip does the drums and a few other key instruments. Snatcher uses the Genesis for everything except the drums and the voices. All else is Sea CD PCM.

Jan 19, 2012: Sonic CD was re-released on the Playstation Network and on Steam which includes BOTH the US and JAP soundtracks. They also did a few nice fixes.
