  • LEGO today revealed the brand new Technic 42159 Yamaha MT-10 SP 1:5 scale motorcycle set! This is the second huge bike after the BMW M 1000 RR from last year and shares a lot of special parts with it, but it also has some brand new tricks to show you.

    Those new gearbox pieces are about a 1:1 replica of a real motorcycle constant mesh sequential gearbox parts. The blue parts called shift drums, they drive the orange shift forks which are then connected to dog gears to interconnect with the slotted gears. Exactly like real ones.

    I love the new gearbox bits, those alone are tempting enough to consider the set, even though i dont really like naked bikes, and i think these 1:5 scale bikes look a tad odd so far. The AR app really cracked me up with the "crossplane crankshaft" note, since all lego ever do is single plane, and incorrect ones at that.
    Im extremely excited to see what next years hypercar can do with these new gearbox bits.

    Kudos on that gearbox with those selector drums and forks.
    Those blue wheels wouldn’t look bad on the BMW bike. Specially in combination with the gold shocks.
    Oh and those yellow/gold-ish shocks, they must resemble Öhlins.

    The new gearbox parts make me wish I was a MOC creator, I would love trying to squeeze everything possible out of the new pieces. Unfortunately, though, I tend to be someone who just sticks to the sets as they are supposed to be, and I am satiated on Technic motorcycles at the moment. Still, I can't wait to see how these pieces are used in future sets and others' MOCs!

  • @johnnytifosi
    @johnnytifosi Рік тому +167

    15.6 cents per piece is just insane for a set without any alternative builds, motors or electronics. It even costs the same with the BMW motorbike with 500 more pieces, itself hardly a bargain too. Lego has really gone off the deep end with their greed. And the absurd color vomit makes it look more like a Duplo set than a 18+ set. Hard pass from me, and it's a pity because that gearbox looks interesting even though it's azure, green, orange and yellow.

      Not sure it's a "hard pass" for me.. might get it. But I will probably wait for a sale or something.. 240 bucks is very pricey for what it is and will be; an immobile dust collecting monolith. Especially compared to the BMW, that can be found for 180 bucks or less these days, with 500 more parts. This set should not have been more than 199.99 new.
      The new gearbox elements aren't enough to justify anything more than that. Same for the wheels/suspension, as clearly they aren't "one time" parts and will be used in many future set... Also the AR shouldn't increase the price, as it is just a gimmick.. AND it doesn't even come with a spec sheet like the BMW.. or a paddock stand..

      @ernestuy7128 Рік тому +18

      Depends entirely on what the pieces are. Are those 1400 pieces mostly beams and pins or plates and other larger or more complex pieces? Different geometries need different manufacturing processes, including different molds and and sometimes very complex molds. Supply/demand for each part also greatly affect the price. The set design/licensing process may also have been more complicated, leading to a more expensive set. Using piece count alone to compare prices is a terrible metric.

    Not a fan of the new gearbox pieces until I see them working with the old manual changeover catch. Especially those new wave shifters are way too huge and it doesn't help that they come in such a gaudy color.

Creating such a detailed building review video takes days, compared to a speed build that everyone else does and literally takes zero extra effort to film the building process. I could of course add more comparisons, talk about my views and stuff, but that'd be a 20 minute video that I'm not sure more people would watch, and would take my time away even more from creating other videos.

    I'm glad Lego is finally starting to make proper gearbox selectors, but I don't like the design of these specifically. Having what's essentially the old design with an intermediary portion just doesn't feel right to me, it feels lacking, especially with the space the new assembly requires. Personally I'd rather see a slightly longer shaft with discrete steps along it, and also a way to limit steps so that if you have an atypical design that requires a certain amount of steps between two clutch gears it's still fully possible with the same parts. However I do recognize that this design does have some flexibility in use when multiple selectors are stacked and clocked differently, but I also think this is a very specific range of use compared to a more proper part that just let's you have more selector positions along a longer shaft. I also wonder about the longevity of the new yellow cogs, the way this set uses them also doesn't really feel correct either, having a beam to lock one in place when a ball joint could've sufficed, having an axle push-rod also seems a bit odd. I'd be curious to see how these new parts are motorized in the future, I'm assuming Lego has an interesting implementation. For example on my complains about the new selectors not having discrete stops, etc., at one time I had a design of the old style of selector (the red ones) in combination with a geared auto-reversing linear actuator, this setup allowed for the driveshaft to be extended linearly which allowed for horizontal tessellation of clutch gears to allow for an automated sequential switch of a very large number of gears; of course this assembly was large on its own, but it also demonstrates the fact that selectors shouldn't be so inherently limited, and especially not when you want to expand beyond four or eight (which in the new selector's case is still 4 but with an intermediary pause) selections, technically even odd-numbered selections were possible thanks to the newer 3L axle connectors in combination with the older 2L ones while using the old 2L selectors. If the previous could ever be miniaturized in any way, which would be difficult and would rely on custom parts if not having it fully motorized with multiple motors switching inputs instead of being fully mechanical with a singular overall input method, then I'd prefer that over what Lego is currently doing; I just think Lego's system, while simplistic, is also inherently heavily limited in usability, at least in sequential uses, as fully selectable uses (such as an H pattern box) are a much more complex issue that really isn't possible anymore with the current system not having a proper slider like the old red selectors were.
    I also wonder if any MOC creators have any plans of taking a couple of these and making a Yamaha Niken. The coloration is mostly correct, the branding is mostly correct, I'm sure paneling is adaptable, the major hurdle is the leaning mechanism and its cowl.

    Do you think this gearbox will hold up under torque of a heavy model, say a tracked vehicle? I am interested in testing it but the price is a bit high since you need two for a tracked version.

    What an amazing set!?
    I look forward to buying this & the experience. Hopefully Lego won't "retire" it too quickly.

    Is there a point where you can input a lego motor? Not to drive around, just to sit behind the stand o something and drive the gearbox. Would be nice to be able to shift gears and actually see the ratios at work, rather than spinning the wheel.

    The parts for driving the switching of gears look a bit over complicated, I envisioned this kind of part to use existing worm gears, but I guess matching the travel length and making it easy to assemble was a bigger priority here.

    Great review. I might have messed up something, but when changing the gearbox from neutral to any other stage and turning the wheels on the lego stand support, the engine makes crippling sound, and also the chain part stutters. The same happened to me with the BMW set.
    From my experience, slightly lifting the front of the set seems to decrease the stuttering.
    Also it doesn't happen when rolling the set on ground.
    Did anyone notice this kind of deviation?

    Now seeing it in OFFICIAL pictures I think it's more successful than the BMW in looking like the act model plus it has better functions, looks more accurate, is cheaper and has greater challenge. Maybe it's my bias as do I like the New MT-07 but I think the set looks great I'd get this but it's still a bit pricey I mostly buy the £109 priced Cars I wish LEGO Went back to the Ducati Pinigale V4 scale as more bikes within that size would be preferable At £70 or have the BMW size bike line be £170.
    Edit i Thought this was the MT-07 didn't know it was the MT-10 LOL

    I've been contemplating lubricating my gears for quite a long time, but i'm too worried about chemical reactions with the ABS and the tendency for lubricants to Get clogged up with dust and debris.
    Does anybody have a suggestion for the best lubricant To use on these plastic gears?
    Something that won't react chemically and stays relatively clean?
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
