    You really can't be an expert bebop pianist without first mastering early 19th century folk banjo

    There IS a band called Jazz is Dead...but the twist is they do fusion versions of Grateful Dead tunes.

      That was the funny thing about the band, they weren't saying Jazz is dead, it was the Dead reference. The great T Lavitz was the mainstay player, the keyboardist for the later years of the Dixie Dregs.

      @@ericmitchell9331 I had the Great Opportunity to see "Jazz Is Dead" at a club in State College, PA many years ago. The lineup featured Jimmy Herring on guitar and Billy Cobham on drums. MIND TOTALLY BLOWN! At the time, I didn't know who Jimmy Herring was. "Birds of Fire" by Mahavishnu Orchestra was one of the very first Jazz Fusion albums I had ever heard as an older teenager.

    Jazz is not dead. It is according to the city, county, or area you live in. Also, people dress how they want. Personally I dress well on stage. The era I came from and the movies I watched had an affect on my style of dress. I loved watching Ken Burns doc on Jazz. I learned a lot from the documentary Jazz. This podcast is very good.

    Great pod. I agree, jazz is NOT dead. As a recovering jazz snob, however, I think there are plenty of arguments to be had about what is and is not (although honestly, it really doesn't matter); however, when I hear music like Kenny G, it's hard for me to consider that 'jazz'. That's a judgment of course, but I do think there's a lot of 'elevator/smooth jazz' out there that while it may bear resemblence to what I consider jazz, it takes the easy road, and is melodically/harmonically uninteresting (again, to me).
    Thanks for the great pods, Peter. I was in the MO All-State Jazz Ensemble with you for a couple of years in '87 and '88, actually (i was the guitarist). I'm not at all surprised at your success!

    I'm a composer, it makes no sense to say Jazz is America's classical music, because America has it's own classical music and rich tradition for it, Aaron Copland, Charles Ives, Samuel Barber, more recently cats like John Cage, John Adams, Terry Riley and many others. I'm not even american but it's important to know those guys even exist if you are a american musician I think. And there should be no sense of superiority or anything, Jazz is just as good and important and there's no point in wanting to call it classical because classical music isn't better, if anything it's more complex, and only some of it is. Arguably Gershwin is the bridge between both sides. To Jazz Pianists, I reccomend listening to Copland's Piano Concerto (with score on youtube), John Adam's Eros Piano (with score on youtube), and John Cage's Sonatas and Interludes for prepared piano, all pretty different piano works by american composers that are pretty forward thinking for their time and potentially inspiring.

    great discussion. re: institutions. they do indeed suck. you used the word i use - museum. I've seen Kamasi Washington 4 or 5 times. Small club - The Independent SF. Small Club - New Parish Oakland. Theater - Warfield SF. Amphitheater - Greek Berkeley. And Museum - SF Jazz. Guess which one had the least energy and was overall the worst experience by far. The 70 year old donors sitting around me at SF Jazz had no idea what they were looking at, sat on their hands and ultimately left halfway through. had I seen kamasi there for the first time, i may not have wanted to see him again. Jazz needs to be in pop rooms and in spaces where new folks will hear it. At the Warfield, he opened up for Snarky Puppy. The whole section in the balcony where i was sitting went crazy and were literally angry he only did 30 minutes. The whole GA floor was bouncing and waving. The headliner Snarky Puppy, who i love, did not come close to matching the energy kamasi and his band generated. My section was talking about the difference and still lamenting that kamasi didnt play longer. He got hundreds of new fans that night. that'll never happen in any of the staid jazz museums that are taking up space in our downtowns.

      As a jazz guitarist, the best advice I can give with playing with us is that you have to play sparse and don't fill up too much space with broad chords, hope this helps 😁

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts and not shying away. I think you may have missed one of the biggest controversies in jazz, though. What is the role (if any) of cultural appropriation, race relations in the United States, systemic racism, and white privilege in jazz? For example, Ethan Iverson addressed this issue a bit, in the context of Jeff Goldblum's jazz album: ethaniverson.com/received-wisdom-jeff-goldblum-chord-scales-the-ireal-book-and-kamasi-washington/

    • @rillloudmother
      @rillloudmother 2 роки тому +1

      yes, because it implies that jazz is somehow sloppy or second rate because it is improvised. it comes from the common misconception that improvisation is just a bunch of trial and error, when jazz improv at its best is actually real time composition.

    What I hate about the "dress" conversation around jazz, is that style came from just wearing a suit. Like GTFO you're not stylish just because you wore a suit like everyone else was and that you basically had to.

    "Jellyroll". What do you think that meant? Hmmm...
