- Angela Merkel has been Germany’s Chancellor for 16 years. In that time, she has steered the country through countless international crises, frequently crossing swords with other world leaders.
When Angela Merkel was sworn in as the first female Chancellor in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany on 22 November 2005, she could hardly have imagined how many international crises she would face during her 16 years in office. There was the financial crisis, the euro crisis, the Greek debt crisis. There was the Arab Spring, the war in Ukraine, war in Syria, IS terrorism, the refugee crisis. Populism was gaining ground in many countries, Britain left the European Union, and the USA under President Trump often chose to follow the path of confrontation instead of cooperation. Then, in 2020, the world was hit by a global pandemic, the coronavirus. And climate change continued apace.
How did Angela Merkel master these challenges as she traveled almost tirelessly from one state visit or international summit to the next? Where did she manage to persuade others, and where did she fail? Did she have a clear political course? Was she simply pragmatic, or was what we witnessed also the product of indecision? How did she position Germany in a world where the USA, Europe, Russia and China are vying for global clout? And how do the heads of state and government whom Angela Merkel has met over the years rate her and her policies? What do international politicians appreciate about her, and where do they find fault?
We put these questions to former U.S. President George W. Bush, former French President Francois Hollande, former Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, former Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis, and former EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, among others. Renowned historians such as Niall Ferguson also comment.

What do you mean by propaganda?
As all media outlets, DW also has its biases. For example, a couple of months ago when Israel bombarded Gaza, one of DWs headlines read "24 palestinians, including 9 children, died in clashes with Israel". There were no clashes, they were bombarded in their homes. Just an example.
I can honestly say I love her, don't underestimate her,but she's a great human being.

In 2015, Russia exposed the USA to the entire world, for supporting terrorists in Syria, and that forced the USA to admit to the whole world, that they had recruited - Trained - Armed - Supplied - Protected - Paid - and used brutal terrorists, the “Free Syria Army”, sorry I forgot, today, the Americans like the term “moderate head chopping fake rebels”, it's only terrorists to the rest of this world, my mistake.
And do you all know, that not one American, of any race or colour, has ever condemned it? Not one has done the right thing, and stood up against it? Or even protested against it? As every other society on earth, would be doing, if any of their governments were forced to admit what the USA admitted. What don't you all understand?
The only society we've ever seen do this before, (not even protest against their own country's killing, once the people found out) was Nazi Germany 1933-1945, and that's the only time in modern history, that the people of any society, have done what these American people are today, or rather, what they're not doing!
Far from seeing anyone of them against it?. What is the reality, what do we really see? We see millions of Americans cheering their criminal president?, and we see millions of Americans chanting USA USA USA?, (just like Nazi's) today. And we have never seen a single American, of any race or colour, stand up against it, why not?
I'll tell you why not! It's because it was a clear case, of all these Americans themselves, saying to themselves, “f*** them? (Those lives don't matter)”. The TRUTH, is, that the American people themselves, are today, a bigger danger to all of us, than even their criminal government, and they've all become the modern day Nazi's.
The people only need to remember one thing!! That the easy way to figure out the right, from the wrong, in any likely war scenario?, is to simply ask yourself what you'd be fighting for? The answer to that question, should be telling you, whose right, and whose wrong?
So ask yourselves, that If the USA went to war today, against either Russia, China, Iran, or N. Korea? Then what would you be fighting for? Then ask yourself what would the Russians, Chinese, Iranian's, or Korean's be fighting for? You'll come to find, they'll all be fighting for their freedom, fighting for their own country's freedom. While the USA, will only be fighting for global tyranny?
(ring any bells? No?).
That's what you're all supporting today. And if you really can't see that? All I can say to that is, the Nazi was just like that, they couldn't see it either! You'll be seen by history as the Axis powers trying for Tyranny over the rest of the world, who will be seen by history as the allied powers. Oh, how the mighty have fallen.

She didn't create the mess..it's the stupidity of the USA aka NATO. As part of the agreement on the German reunification, USA agreed not to move an inch eastwards but they broke these promises. Henry Kissinger and even us amb to USSR John Matlock warned the USA and NATO not to poke Russia. If the USA could freak out by having ussr bases in Cuba, how do you think Russia would do having NATO bases right next to their borders?

Chancellor Merkel was interested in solutions rather than personal power, and her mistakes didn't come from corruption. She's well respected for that. While crushing parts of german middle class and alienating low income families isn't exactly her greatest achievement, she's been one of the world's peace keepers until now.
In this mixed bag, she'll be internationally remembered as a leader of stability. This comes at a cost. It's obvious, the last years in office have taken a toll on her health.
The german ppl will remember the disruption of internal peace though, and they won''t forget the missed opportunities to shape up our country earlier.
Libya and Syria were no mistakes. Staying out of American wars was a good decision

I will miss her lack of vanity, a certain nonstandard integrity, the extreme rationality and orientation towards science and her calm voice always sounding so young.
I never voted for her, I never could. Her party stands for a lot I find unacceptable. But I felt safe with her as chancellor. And I am very grateful for the first female chancellor being 100% "a chancellor". Thank you very much, Dr. Merkel!

Really? If she didn’t block Ukraine from entering EU and NATO there would be no war there. Putin probably would find someone else to attack but Ukraine would be free from him and Europe would focus more on development of green energy to not be so dependent on him. German Russian coalition built very expensive under the sea pipes while if ran on land through those countries it would be many times cheaper, but would benefit them. More importantly, many realised that wars were usually caused by few people and executed by solders, people, that may often not believe in the cause, but do it for money only.
Today's age is very different one to the one 150 years ago, or even 50 years ago. Most of us, we just do our best to get along - and so far it works pretty well, actually. Especially considering EU, they do bond the countries together and make us, European prosper. Shame UK did not realise that fact and gave in to few speeches and promoted xenophobia.

Shes a good gardener of democracy inspite of critisism in times of severe crisis..she listen to her borderline of community and region.
Hearing this litany of problems and issues made my head spin. That Merkel was able to navigate this nest of difficulties capably (with just some exceptions) is such testimony to her steady hand.

Nice to read. I've been once in Australlia for an Excursion and private travel and enjoyed the time in Queensland. I didn't expect to meet many helpful inhabitants after i was robbed out except my wallet with only some AUS $. Happening after two weeks. Could write a book about it. Completely convinced me Australia is like a part of europe on the other side of the earth. As even it is a simplistic thought. I would love to see the world united as fast as possible and think there is little obstacle between Europe and Australia - except the distance. ^^
Mrs Merkel has my deepest respect. If economies, especially money, didn't have the saying worldwide, she could have achieved much more. But she could not do or change all. She did far more than others.

How did the German Domestic Economy do under her 16-year rule? That is also an important aspect of good governance, which the documentary has not properly covered.
Apart from that, it portrayed Angela as a politician in a non-biased manner, which needs to be appreciated.
It’s too big an economy to grow very fast, but endless money printing to handle the financial crisis has also created continuous growth for the real economy. China is growing, the US is growing, German exports rise with the state of the world economy.

I will miss her even though i dont agree much with the cdu politics. She wasnt only the 'Mutti' of Germany, for me she was kinda the Mutti of the world. Definetly big steps to fit in for the upcoming german politics & chancellor. Lets hope for the best, those politicians who beat most on the cdu/spd politics can now show how good they really are (i wont count afd bc fuck them anyways). Interesting times for sure. As an American, Ms. Merkel is probably the foreign leader who I'd say I respect the most. She always seemed to have a steady, reasonable hand in world affairs despite the constant chaos and madness that the time period seems to carry. I hope Germany can find someone as level-headed and reasonable to serve as the next chancellor, but those are big shoes to fill.

She was one of the best leaders we had in European unions.
She messed up the uncontrollable influx of refugees though , forever changing Europe. China also controlled Merkel. During her early years, she believed that China will be more open to Democratic beliefs so she invested in bilateral relationship. Later on, she will find out that China will always be China and she cant do anything about it. It is more complicated now since China is heavily invested/rooted economically in Germany already.
I am not saying she was a worst leader. I am just stating her flaws.

Her risk management was abysmal though, perfectly administering the status quo yet lacking completely the vision and entrepreneurship to lead Germany into the next decade

Important to note about Merkel's migration move 2015: As always, Merkel did not go ahead and lead regarding to her convictions. For weeks the German public, facing the migration "crisis", being well-informed about the war and oppression in Syria and so on was pushing the government to act and signalised readiness to act. Merkel, in September 2015, saw this and followed a majority public opinion with people cheering at refugees at German stations.
It was only for 2 months later or so that this public mood shifted. Not looking at the same people, but looking at those who were silent before. Also the press: supporting and cheering to this humanitarian move, the same journalists collectively seemed to notice they had not been representing the whole spectre of opinions before and collectively went to criticize the government 2 months later for what they called for before. Nevertheless: most Germans are open to hosting refugees and still support that move back then. The matter of discussion just is: what do the others in Europe do? It only works together! And: Instant help is good, but does not solve deeper problems. AND: Which causes are legitimate to flee? Do we think of refugees as people fleeing war and terrorism? Do we think of refugees as people fleeing general misery and poverty, seeking better chances for their children's future? Do we think of refugees as people to just seek better opportunities, relatively to their former ones at home? Third is not accepted, second is debated on and first is surely acknowledged. Also by law there are differences in Germany and therefore it is important to know before which category anyone belongs to, for not investing tons of money, risking your life for a very uncertain outcome.
You could take in refugees -- but why not let them go to neighboring countries like they're supposed to? It's also wise to send them back home after the conflict has ended, with no exceptions. Assad runs a secular government and he has massive support from the Syrian population. Almost everyone I've seen from Syria who is anti-Assad had extremist views and wants to impose a hardline Islamic theocracy. In some cases people hate him because he imprisoned and killed their family members. Germany is a very foolish country for taking in not only refugees from across the world causing a huge financial burden, as well as radicalizing segements of the right wing, but you also took in countless thousands of illegal migrants. You mentioned Syria but forgot to mention Libya which opened the floodgates of illegal migration from sub-Saharan Africa, this was engineered by American think tanks and supported by massive NGOs. Merkel is very weak and hypermoralistic, just like much of the German population. What did she do when the Obama admin was caught monitoring her communications? Nothing. Weak.

I think she determined that Germans do not want to be our world's General so declined to move them into leading the EU. They are just a vital part of it. I think France would like that role, though.
France is culturally wonderful, but in terms of economic policy & leading the EU, it has struggled & has more in common with Southern Europe than with Germany & the Nordics. I believe less than 50% of businesses in France are French-owned. The US & Germany have large corporate ownership there, so at least it's fellow Western nations with similar legal & moral principles, but France's lack of entrepreneurship makes it vulnerable to control by those who don't have its best interests at heart

As a German, I am proud of Angela Merkel and all that she has achieved over the years as the first female chancellor of a strong country, she was exceptional in every single way, strong, sympathetic, intelligent, and diligent.
Thank you Angela for your heart-felt service to the people of Germany, Europe, and the world.
That's how I feel about her as a Kiwi. I could see Jacinda Arden following her footsteps in our country.

It's a good complimentary video. After watching it you might get the impression that all of Angela Merkel's activities were about foreign policy issues. However, I think if you ask Germans from Saxony or Bavaria, for example, not everyone can approve of the internal policy of the chancellor, to put it mildly.

But you didn't mention her resurrection of segregation, this time round for forced medical treatments, again (that's so 1940's), not religious this time though, that would be discrimination, the reopening of camps for the "unclean", again, and her rejecting the German flag in favor of the eu flag and a come one come all immigration policy, it's going so well I hear. Should’ve stayed with nuclear… Germany doesn’t have earthquakes or tsunamis. Now dependent on gas from Russia which is politically not so great and environmentally even more damaging
I’m not from the US. Please don’t put me in that basket 😅
But fair enough. I’m just saying from an ecological point of view nuclear is the least harmful from all current ‘realistic’ options (until we improve other green energies). Unfortunately events like Tchernobyl and Fukushima have plagued public opinions about nuclear power. The fact is that nuclear is still the best option, especially the latest models of nuclear power plants where important improvements in safeguarding and security have been made. Most existing nuclear plants were built in the 60s so I agree there needs to be a general upgrade.
Other than that I wasn’t aware of Germany being prone to earthquake, that’s something new I learnt.
And yea… relying on either Russia or the US is not a good deal. If it were up to me Europe should unify and stop relying on the US so much… but that’s gonna be a hard sell :/
The Tsunami caused a blackout, the blackout caused Fukushima. Many other things including a terror attack can also cause blackouts.
Nobody can ever be 100% right - not even me! My problem with Merkel is that I genuinely, and sadly, believe she was and is a one-off' in politics - she was honest!
