I have this exact same sawmill and it works great. NEVER use ethanol gas in your small motors. It's like POISON to small engines. Always use non-ethanol gas with fuel stabilizer added, which eliminates many problems. Non-ethanol gas is not available at every gas station. I've found that gas stations near lakes where boat engines are used often sell non-ethanol gas. It costs about $1 more than regular gas, but it's worth it! Love all of the Taryl videos, keep up the good work!!
Sure am glad I live in an area where non ethanol fuel is always available and have the room to store all my power equipment inside. Love your channel I do learn a lot.
I didn’t even know you could get non Ethanol gas. If i could get it I’d probably use it in my car sometimes. I could probably help burn out the shit ethanol leaves behind.

Almost every spring I find all kinds of stuff in our dumpsters at work...most almost brand new...with funked up carbatraters. I am greatful. Thank you to the oblivious masses.
I started to notice quite a few years back that small engines using the regular gas with ethanol started to have more starting problems after sitting for a few months, and having to replace the fuel lines a lot sooner than before. When the ethanol absorbs water, it becomes that whitish gel like fluid. When the machine sits for a while, then that whitish fluid dries up and leave a white powder and coats and plugs the internals of the carb. I have advised many people about using the ethanol free gas, which is usually 89 or 90 octane, which in my opinion helps the motor to run slightly cooler. But most people don't want to pay the extra cost for the E free gas, I guess they would rather pay for more repairs ang carb cleanings, and not having the machine start when they need it. You can pay it now, or you can pay a lot more later!
I like Sta-bils marine grade stabilizer. It is formulated to PR everything ent I ethanol fuels from destroying fiberglass tanks in boats. They were designed before ethanol fuel was a thing. It works well for storing fuel as well as preventing carb damage. One thing I do on my small engines is to run them completely dry. I may mix up a small amount of fuel with a double dose of B14 chem tool then put in a bit off this in the tank and run it dry. This gives the carb a cleaning before storage. In the spring I use a thankful of this double dose B14 for the first tank then go to regular fuel. If they start to run a bit off they get another tank or two of the B14 double dose fuel. This usually helps keep things running smoothly. Occasionally I might need to do a carb clean on something but not near as often as I use to.
I appreciate how you take the extra step to sand-blast the float bowl even though you don't have to. That's a real small engine mechanic right there. Now there's your dinner🫵
Once years back I had an old push lawn mower that when I was done with it I always just let it sit in the rain and weather but it always started near first try for way over a year. . Then I I got smart and put it under a lean to shelter with a roof and no walls, and I covered it up with a tarp. That spring it never started....No spark...magneto and flywheel covered in rust from compensation...LOL direct sun light outside kept it dry from warm sunlight....But under a tarp the water moisture built up and rusted everything
From the appearance of the connection between the carburetor and air filter I'd be suspicious of an air leak at that point. Taryl probably fixed it when he replace the carb after cleaning. Ethanol fuel only works in cars because we burn it up so fast. Let your car sit around for months with ethanol fuel and you can have trouble too.
The coating on the float bowl does do something! It protects the part from ambient/low levels of moisture while it’s sat new and unused on a shelf or in a box lol
Between the gas shut off valve and carburetor drain screw you should be able to winterize that saw very easily. A little fuel stabilizer in the tank a nice cover over that motor and you would never have problems ethanol or not. People know fuel sucks for storage they just don’t care. If they cared they would be properly learning how to maintain there saw. I really liked the outdoor view for a change Taryl. Keep up the great work guys 👍.

I learned the hard way about using ethanol gas on my lawn tractor and storage with it still in the carburetor. Fast forward, after cleaning and rebuilding the carburetor, new fuel line with a shut off valve to let the engine run use all the remaining gas out fuel bowl until it run out plus the use on non ethanol gas from now on with every piece of outside power equipment. We're good to go

It is the temperature cycles and humidity that causes the ethanol problems to occur so rapidly. Ethanol free is always preferred in engines that run infrequently, as well as stored inside.
Hey Taryl thanks for the great video. Good to see Skip skipping around the cost issue. My question is why can’t manufacturers use molded plastic carb bowls like the old lawnboys? Wouldn’t help in this situation but carbs, without integrated fuel shutoff valves,it might help with the rust and goo that grows there? Mr. Magoo
Actually my experience is if you shut of the fuel and run the engine until it stalls, I have not had any problems with letting it set in the tank over the winter, also I usually put some fresh gas in when I go to restart.
I learned my lesson back in the 80s! I didn't burn up my chain saw, but it was close! I've gotten a lot of gas powered mowers, power washers, and weedeaters cheap or free!

Taryl, I wish you would have told everyone to drain their equipment at the end of the season so that the ethanol isn't present to cause this problem. Also, I got a really good laugh about you using the mill to make lumber to build a log cabin.
I try to shut the fuel off and run the carb dry before storing after each use/job on small engines, is that the right way? Thanks for the tips and wisdom Taryl.

Almost every engine I work on has carb problems because of this very thing.. cheap gas left too long and water. Also people actually think oil does not need to be changed.
This is a pretty common occurrence here in Southern Minnesota with seed tenders and liquid fertilizer trailers. They get run two to three weeks a year with 87/ethanol blend in them and then get parked for the season after that. The following spring the customer is mad because their engine won't start and they can't plant corn or soybeans because of typically, a Honda GX series engine with bad gas in it won't start.
I honestly believe that the fuel is being shipped with the water pre installed 😂. I’ve been going to the local FPO airport and buying aviation gas for my generators and equipment that get stored longer than a couple of months
Unfortunately many people no longer have an option for ethanol free gasoline, Ontario Canada pretty much phased it out in 2024 and i suspect the long line of curbside equipment pickups will be in full swing later this year ramping up to a avalanche of equipment in 2025. Many small engine equipment is not worth repairing due to the low cost such as lawnmowers, so looking forward to making a few dollars in picking them up and making them breathe new life. We already know fuel additives are junk by Taryl’s long term 18 month testing video’s, so shutting down equipment properly is paramount to keeping small engines running after the off season. Cheers.

Terrell I see this all the time on carburetors on my small engines I did an experiment a couple years ago on 2 of my pieces of equipment that we're problematic with the powdered aluminum in the inside of the bowls in the small parts I airbrushed with gas tank liner made a world of difference
I only use non ethanol fuel in my push mowers (Briggs flat heads). but run ethanol fuel on, and properly winterise, my ride on. It has a decent Honda 400 engine and I baby that unit. Being aware that ethanol fuels are short term fuels in small engines is half the battle. Common sense and a few tools is the other half.
Yes Honda engines are a little more resilient when it comes to ethanol, not much, but just enough to put them far out front of Briggs, etc. IDK why these other manufacturers don't wake up but I guess that's what keeps their prices lower 😂🤣🤣😭
Water in the gas mostly comes from condensation in humid conditions. We sump drain the fuel in the planes every time we fly they get some water in them even overnight. Put an ounce or 2 per gallon of Seafoam into the fuel you will never gelling issues . It is also good for cleaning out dirty gas tanks. Put it in your car gas tank it works better than fuel injector cleaner as well.
I know people that swear by it but keep in mind it still does nothing to help the fuel so regardless its best to use non ethanol or shut off the valve when you're done and run that stuff out the carb
Taryl, I wouldn't suggest taking advantage of a senior... Live trap some squirrels, a half dozen otto do it, more is better. Put those squirrels in a box and when Skippy comes in to pick up his motor, you give him the box and tell it's a kick start. You set the box on the floor and give it a kick. Those squirrels will scamper around inside the box and that squirrel engine will just purr! That's why lots of squirrels will run smoother. Then, cause your a nice guy, you'll tell skippy "NO CHARGE!" Your doing it as a favor for a senior. Might get your handsome mug on the front page news, too. It should get your UTube ratings up a bit too.
Do you say the ethanol absorbs water? Whats to do? Drain the gas within a month, ? Then if you want to cut more wood refill with fresh rec90? Do you have videos explaining this. Also for storage and chainsaws storage? Pkease explain, thankyou daryl. Mr mechanic!
For years I have been using " Rec Fuel" non ethanol fuel in my small engines, and my 4 wheelers and Garden Tractors. Had the fuel lines eaten up on my Stihl 026 several times and the dealer told me to use the rec fuel. I don't use it in my outboard motors .
Fortunately we have non ethanol fuel in our area. It doesnt cost that much more than ethanol for your power equipment and it's cheap insurance. I use it in my generator and snowblower, along with I ounce of Gumout per gallon.. I never have a problem .The most important thing you can do is drain the fuel at the end of the season. People who dont want to be bothered with that simple task end up paying for it later
I don't need no saw mill! My wife Saw's wood all night long! But she says she don't Snore! Ha Ha! Hey Taryl, use that Gas tank liner/repair/coating, to give your float bowl that new coated float bowl smell! Ha Ha! That will show all those coated float bowl guys a thing or two...
If i have to leave something outside under a tarp for any period of time i drain the fuel from the tank and carb and use 2 stroke oil. On I/C engines i have a special home made spray bottle to spray ATF on the cylinder walls on both automotive and light equipment engines also prevents body panels from rusting.
Cooper bogetti has a podcast channel that recently had a guy named Jay who has his own ethanol refinery. He goes in some detail what makes it bad, it’s not the ethanol, it’s what they mix with it to denature it. Also talks why they mix 10% with gas, cause our gas is so horrible, they do it to raise the octane, to meet the minimum requirements. It’s really interesting if anyone has time to listen to it.
Non ethanol fuel is pretty hard to find and expensive in Canada so I only get enough fuel for a short time and run all my machines dry until I use them again.
My dad in the 60 s helped his brother inlaw in his mower shop and he talked about mowers would come in the shop with old gas in the 80s I helped a friend in his mower shower old gas looked like ice tea but nothing like today
I understand not everyone has a garage to park a sawmill indoors. But at least put a cover over the motor. Doesn't have to be fancy - tarp, upside down storage bin, anything is better than leaving it out in the rain. Your car engine wouldn't do well either if your car had no hood. No ethanol fuel - yes, but keeping it dry is even more important.

Yes Honda engines are a little more resilient when it comes to ethanol, not much, but just enough to put them far out front of Briggs, etc. IDK why these other manufacturers don't wake up but I guess that's what keeps their prices lower 😂🤣🤣😭
Love Skippy. Ey ey ey?
Water in the gas mostly comes from condensation in humid conditions. We sump drain the fuel in the planes every time we fly they get some water in them even overnight. Put an ounce or 2 per gallon of Seafoam into the fuel you will never gelling issues . It is also good for cleaning out dirty gas tanks. Put it in your car gas tank it works better than fuel injector cleaner as well.
That was great maybe now he will cover at least the motor if it’s going to be left outside all the time. 👍👍👍
should you use fogging oil before you store your small engine equipment?
I know people that swear by it but keep in mind it still does nothing to help the fuel so regardless its best to use non ethanol or shut off the valve when you're done and run that stuff out the carb
I do that with outboard.
Good job, lots of good information about carb clean-out and put together.
tks
Hi taryl really appreciate your vids
Skippy got his price match 😆😆😆
You are a real fox, dear Tarry ... only your tail isn't that hairy ... Greats from over there!
Good job tayral
Fortunately we have non ethanol fuel in our area. It doesnt cost that much more than ethanol for your power equipment and it's cheap insurance. I use it in my generator and snowblower, along with I ounce of Gumout per gallon.. I never have a problem .The most important thing you can do is drain the fuel at the end of the season. People who dont want to be bothered with that simple task end up paying for it later
The ending was funny 😂
So much for that "carb protective coating" people talk about. Looks like it didn't help any
Edit-And you just took the words out of my mouth! Lol
Law of entropy wins every time. 😂
1978.. a very good year..
Yea unless you where Jerry Twoscocks he got shafted hard back in 78
I don't need no saw mill! My wife Saw's wood all night long! But she says she don't Snore! Ha Ha! Hey Taryl, use that Gas tank liner/repair/coating, to give your float bowl that new coated float bowl smell! Ha Ha! That will show all those coated float bowl guys a thing or two...
Had the same problem. Bought an Identical carb for 17 dollars with free shipping. She runs like new now.
Another classic case of alcohol poisoning. That thar is job security for sure. Great vid!
That big ole pole barn at 11:07 should allow getting big stuff like this inside!!
If i have to leave something outside under a tarp for any period of time i drain the fuel from the tank and carb and use 2 stroke oil. On I/C engines i have a special home made spray bottle to spray ATF on the cylinder walls on both automotive and light equipment engines also prevents body panels from rusting.
-Don't keep these outdoors.
-I don't have room in my shop to work on it, so...
🙄😉😂
I live down south so my mowers don’t sit long enough for the fuel to go bad. I only use non ethanol fuel in my 2 stroke machinery.
I'm not too fond of this new fuel we have, the gas from back in the day was much better. 💥 thank's taryl
Oh, and I am a subscriber I watch it all the time
Non ethanol fuel is pretty hard to find and expensive in Canada so I only get enough fuel for a short time and run all my machines dry until I use them again.
I just knew Taryl would fix it!
I think that dental tool with the flats is called a "scaler".
Use the saw mill to cut boards for the addition!
I hang the phone up like that at work too 😂
In our business water 💧 is not your friend 🤣🤣🤣
Only non ethanol fuel i buy from my gas station, if i store it add some fuel stabilizer. No more carbatrator issues.
More dental tool scraping please! 😄
Good job mate ..
