"are" is used for gender neutral singular pronouns as well.
@@notHifen Currently yes, but I don't think they were correcting the grammar, rather making a case for using it in a different fashion. I'm personally hoping we'll get a singular gender neutral pronoun that becomes the default [edit: the following comparison is historically inaccurate, see a comment below for the correction] like the old English use of "he." (I think people would be surprised how rarely gender actually matters in conversation!)

That wouldn't be grammatically correct. It would be "They are here". The use of 'they/them' as a pronoun has been part of English language for years.
The English language doesn't make sense as it's influenced from 3 different languages.
