Got a tip from a lady growing lettuce in Florida in August years ago. Flavor was sweet and wonderful (not bitter). I tried it in Missouri in our August 100 degree heat. Had to keep it watered (used drip irrigation). Best lettuce I ever produced. Variety: Ermosa
I've been to Ray's Farm and toured it with him. He's a humble guy that enjoys sharing his knowledge. As someone who has joined his lettuce class, the content is very detailed and the Q&A's he provides allows the ability to fill in the gaps with any questions you may have. Highly recommend!!

I have ibc tote containers that I made into wicking beds and first time ever I grew butter lettuce and they thrived 3 plants out of the 6 thrived loved the constant access to water until our normal heat and dry weather kicked in. So this year, I’m in sw KS, we actually had a lot of rain (we’ve been in extreme drought basically no humidity for decades now hence why I went with wicking beds) and for whatever reason it was cool into June and humid on warm days and the butter lettuce thrived while everything else did nothing. But when the heat came around my butter lettuce started sprouting and growing tall not dense like it had and the awesome leaves became bitter and disgusting so big bummer and hoping to find a better variety for my area. I did have them growing in direct sunlight, again I’m new to all this. My tomatoes struggled to do much till the heat came back, even my zucchini and squash failed massively so I don’t know if they hated the containers which had plenty of room for them or because our season was so rainy and cool to start off with but then the damn squash bugs came probably a month ago and anyways not a good growing season in sw KS
- try oakleaf varieties rather than heart varieties. they resist heat better. - keep them in partial shade most of the day. taller bushes or trees east and west , and 50-70% shadecloth. - they benefit from being sheltered from heavy rain too. so use hoops with 70% shadecloth until they are mature, and have plastic covers to protect from heavy rain. - make sure the hoops are high enough to allow good circulation i.e.at least 2 feet above lettuce. - drip irrigate for even moisture - mulch to keep soil moist - soil can be 50% compost, 25% sand, 25% garden soil - liquid fertilizer every 3-4 weeks.
Great tips, ty so much for! 👍I small scale garden for my family & our hot humid KY weather is definitely harsh on lettuce in summer. What varieties did you say again? I heard Cherokee but couldn't hear the other.
Same here Kat Riley. KY summers are not good for lettuce in the middle of July. I, too did not pick up or hear the variations of types of lettuce good with heat.
@@movingnaturefilms so u think they deliberately Scrabbled out the name of the type of lettuce that is heat tolerate just for the sake of small home Gardeners not knowing?
Lettuce is just expensive in the PH, so how is it going? have you tried planting it? I read from some comments that it has to be well watered. Some people grow It indoors and take it out during night time till 9am.
Hi there. I live in a tropical island where the heat sours to 35/40 degrees Celsius. Trying hard with a shade on top still some bolting and some are not becoming bigger either. Any tips. Tjanks a lot.
holy crap, i've been noticing this stuff with my lettuce growing also, I think this Dude just solved my problems for me :) , I live in similar conditions as him up in Wisconsin, but we have shorter seasons here, and gets hella cold in the winter
I tried to grow buttercrunch lettuce outside, but the heat turned them bitter. Any tips to help combat this? I want to grow it commercially. Greetings from northern Michigan:)
Great video! Thanks for sharing but did you really just encourage people to package in clam shells?? As small farmers we have a responsibility to the planet that sustains us. We must educate the masses that clam shells are unnecessary garbage, even when recyclable.
I just saw that video posted by Curtis maybe 2 videos ago and was really impressed with his decision. I also recognize the "crab in a bucket" mentality that fuels posts like this because I'm experiencing this at work: "If I can't succeed and be someone significant, then I'm going to sabotage someone who is successful, because I'm shallow and it'll make me feel better about being a loser." Michael, please learn how to set goals, pursue dreams and get something done about yourself instead of being an embarrassing hater. People like Curtis, who are progressing the world, shouldn't waste their time with insecure people like you.

Awesome, love your enthusiasm! Thanks for the tips :)
In the desert with 95F+ Rouge d'Hiver with 80% shade cloth is working well. My friend in southern Arizona is growing this variety successfully, also.

Can also try Adriana lettuce and like said before Ermosa does well for us in Florida.

How's the flavor?
Isn't hot weather lettuce usually more bitter than its cool weather counterpart?
Great information!!!
That's what I was told as well and that it would should straight up to flower in the heat. It would be good to know how they control that.
I didn't see a link. How can I get your lettuce course? I'm fighting heat in greenhouses
Any link to the course?

Hi:) im from the philippines, can lettuce grow in zone 12?
Zones mostly pertain to perennials. You can grow lettuce anywhere, just might be a lot of extra effort to aid heat or humidity in your area.
Thank you for your valuable content and information Curtis :)
Is spinach possible in hot climate aswel?
Average 30c here. Cannot get lettuce to germinate.
Thanks for the tip.
Are you still offering this course?
I'm wondering also.
What was the temperature when this video was done?
Is his course still available? I dont see a link in the description
My question also.
It's the first link, but it's 404. Too bad it wasn't a book or something that sticks around a little longer.
