Hi Josh, you’re doing a great job, not only farming, but you go beyond that, you’re inspiring people and educating as well. I will suggest to touch the pricing subject deeper with a general overview of the different crops you grow. The legal side of an urban farm should be a most watch video, even it should be different in every state and city. Another important subject is that as an urban farmer you may deal with squirrels, chipmunks, raccoons, and other sort of pests. How do you deal with them. Great job again!!!!!
In our urban home garden rabbits are now our bane and the measures we'd taken and had success with against the list above, rabbits just laugh at. This year we're trying metal screening/fencing, time to get back out there...
Thanks for video. I built a bubbler which worked very well. But I didn't know how long to bubble it and if you removed the lettuce with the bubbler on or off. The details on the fan drying lettuce were perfect. I also learned that I cut my lettuce way to short. Those are the type of "little things" that bring your video's to the top of the must watch list when your learning how to become a better gardener or marker gardener. Your video's are fantastic!
You're welcome. I vary the time I run the bubbler depending on the crop that I am washing and how dirty it is. I turn off the bubbler before I start removing the crop. Thanks for watching!
Josh, you really make some of the best garden videos out there. You don't waste a minute, but put out a lot of good info backed up by good results. No wasted breath.
Hi Josh! Thanks for the great info. I really appreciate that you sometimes repeat key information. I too have a teaching background and, depending on a person's learning style, repetition is helpful. Also, I've learned so much from all of your videos and I'm so grateful for all of your generosity and hard work. Cheers!
You're welcome. As a former teacher we always joked about you tell them what you are going to tell them, you tell them and then you tell them what you told them. I'm glad to hear you have been enjoying the videos. Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for taking the time to share this information. I have found that when it comes to gardening and farming know-how it can be difficult to just get to the info I need. And your videos do a great job at sharing the meat and market garden potatoes of the topic lol Thank you!
I really appreciate how thorough you explain every step and you put links in the discription for all the little things that are sometimes hard to find. Thank you Josh. JR
Thank you so very much Josh. This is my first year of growing salad greens on a larger scale. What the chickens or my family do not eat I give away. This video addressed some freshness issues and logistics out in the field I was having. This gives me confidence in pushing forward in marketing my own. Thanks again so very much.
Good to hear there are some good tips in this video. I try to have helpful stuff in there for a lot of different types of growers. Those lettuce varieties have been pretty solid for me. Thanks for watching!
Hi Josh, This is such a great next step to showing, telling and inspiring us. I'm about to take a similar step in Grass Valley CA, so sincere thanks for the real world market garden instruction . . I agree with James your, one of the best.
This channel has been such a great informational guide for me when prepping, planting, and maintaining my garden. I aswell like to share the information I learn from josh with my coworkers who are also getting into gardening. Look forward to the next video!
Hi Josh, great videos have been following you since the move to the new farm. I wondered if you have seen any Charles Dowding no dig videos, his way of picking lettuce gives several goes at the same plants. Not sure if that works in your climate or labour constraints just an observation. Looking forward to a full years growing season. Regards Simon
Totally different climate. Charles is an amazing grower. I got a chance to interview him a little while back and we were talking about how different our climates were. He was amazed when I told him about how much heat we get here.
Josh Sattin Thanks for taking time out to reply, that will teach me to go back through your other videos. Stay safe keeping us up to date on the new venture.
@@wallnutt258 No worries. It was actually a Growers Live video I did on the No-Till Growers channel. I also don't remember if it was something we talked about during the interview or before/after. But here it is if you want to check it out. ua-cam.com/video/X0lY3MZDXas/v-deo.html
Josh Sattin Great Q&A session, since we have been in lockdown your videos and Charles have kept me sane, hopefully when all this virus recedes I can visit Homeacres as it is only 30 miles away and when we visit the States your community farm is on the bucket list. Enjoy your new venture and carry on with the teachings. Regards Simon
Great video. I have been watching you since you were farming at your house. Question: How deep into summer can you sell/plant lettuce? How often do you water to cool your lettuce down?
Excellent video. Ive sowed mixed lettuce in modules but dropped too many in each cell. Should I tin to one per cell or plant out as is? Tad confused. Ty
I live in Pennsylvania where winters are cold..I started my seeds a few days ago indoors with my heat mats. So far they are growing great.. question is...id love to grow vegetables all year but not sure if they would grow indoors..ill planting all my vegetables in bins or totes and grow bags..do u have any videos on that or if not any videos on how to harvest and store everything I grow this summer to save for winter? My plan is to not buy my vegetables from the store any longer
Thanks so much. I'm in NC and trying to grow summer lettuce for market. A few questions: the leaves you're harvesting look rather large. I know you said you're not going for a gourmet spring mix, but is there a limit to the size leaves customers want in a lettuce mix or have you never had any complaints. Also, is there a way to keep lettuce from browning at the cut end in storage? Thanks!
Like most things in farming, it depends. You will have to make that call for each crop and what stage it is in. Cut too high and get a smaller harvest. Cut too low and you will damage the plant. You can definitely tell by looking at the plant and what you harvest.
Put your scale, bags and taper onto a cart you can put next to the drying table (and store under it when you aren't drying lettuce. Far fewer steps for the bagger.
What do you do for garden slugs? If you see a slug on your lettuce but it/they haven't started really munching yet, do you already need to throw it out to be safe or only when there is clear slug damage already?
I saw something recently about slugs & water. They said that slugs will definitely contaminate drinking water. I don’t remember what contaminate is in their trail, but it seems like it wouldn’t be a good thing to ingest no matter where it is.
I work on Fridays so is it too early to harvest lettuce on Thursday morning and bag it and get into the fridge for Saturday morning? I'm really starting to struggle just thinking about it because I've never had to do it on a Thursday before
Hi josh I know your climate is a little different than UK but have you ever tried harvesting how Charles downing (does have iTunes channel) harvests his lettuce as he can get upto 10weeks of harvest from 1 bed of lettuce

How can I order some of that lettuce seed? All my lettuce is already done and it’s early June😞. Also my lettuce has a ton of slugs and pill bugs. Any suggestions?? It’s in a raised bed with good soil but so many slugs and pill bugs😩

Again, most helpful! What temp do you chill your greens at! And do use other temps for different veg? Thank You
Our refrigerated trailer is set at 38 degrees F. We only have one cooler.
Josh ! Great job ! Love to grow lettuce, it is so easy ! Where are you located ?
Great video. I have been watching you since you were farming at your house. Question: How deep into summer can you sell/plant lettuce? How often do you water to cool your lettuce down?
Heat tolerant varieties like he grows can go all summer if you water regularly to keep them cool. I'm still harvesting the last of my salanova now
I grow lettuce year round. I water many times during the day to help keep the plants cool.

I’m new in the gardening and have tons of questions. 1 of them is Do lettuce grow better in drip system or daily watering?
Really enjoy your vids! I may have missed it, but what sort of spacing do you use for lettuce? It looks intensive
Hi Josh, thanks for all the great info. May I ask how you package your microgreens? Bags like this or clamshells, or what?
Good video 👍🏻
Thank you!
How far from the ground should you make the cut to harvest the lettuce?

How many feet of bed did you harvest to get the 25 lbs of lettuce?
I didn't measure. Probably just over half of the 50-foot bed. I usually try to get 40-50# on the first harvest.
Have you tried any alternatives to plastic bags? Have you heard of anything that could work?
I work on Fridays so is it too early to harvest lettuce on Thursday morning and bag it and get into the fridge for Saturday morning? I'm really starting to struggle just thinking about it because I've never had to do it on a Thursday before

Have you considered giving or bardering your waste veggies to a pig farmer?
