- Hi, this is PART 1 of a 2 Part video.
This trying to fix' video shows me attempting to fix 2 SEGA Game Gears that I bought from eBay. Both of them were sold as faulty.
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things.
I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series.

You can remove the screen scratches with some rubbing compound and floor polish / polyurethane. Watch some head light restoration videos, or hot wheels / matchbox windshield restoration videos. WD40 also works well as a temporary scratch filler, but will rub off eventually.

Nice job. Always a pleasure watching. Disassemble the screen to clean it. I do that on water damaged screens from phones to replace the reflective sheets.

Great stuff, got me wanting a Game Gear again lol. First and only experience was a borrowed one around 1993 and it was awesome at the time, still pretty impressive today for that kind of technology to be handheld. I sort of want one of my own now.
Well done, Vince! Might be worth getting an AC adapter in future so you can troubleshoot power issues / fault find without depending on batteries. Love watching your videos...
Yes, or if you already have one for Master System or Mega Drive 1 you can use that for the Game Gear aswell. Mega Drive 2 uses another one, that won't work.
If you think of the issue being similar to the old xclamp scenario with the 360, you'll understand why their are mixed degrees of success. I've personally had success using a hot air soldering station whilst applying pressure at the same time and it's worked fine ever since, that's about 2 years back although it maybe only comes out once every few months. But yeah common sense with the heat etc as obviously you need enough to melt solder but not cook the thing, and it should sort it.

You could use a felt pad that you use for table legs instead of the tape.
With the connector there it sounds like the old glue (hotbar) that plagued all sorts of screens back in the day. Either pressure or applying heat can help, but yes your mileage will vary.

Thinking about it you really have to go "all the way" fixing them IE. future proofing, new screen(best), AV out, new caps, new bezel/plastic polish, new battery pack so people are motivated to buy them even if the price gets more premium. That's a lot of cap leak, maybe it needs a bath in some neutralizing liquid. Regardless you got to get it working first and you did an excellent job of that, got one of the sharper screens there. ;)

If you are going through this much trouble you should put in an LED mod aswell, the backlight is a neon tube, which you can de-solder and replace with an LED on each side. Break the ends off the tube, remove everything inside and put the LEDs into it. Then put everything back together. Increases battery life dramatically.

I find some peoples background sound ( not music just like air conditioning or stuff in the background very soothing so i usually have my ipad by my ear when i sleep
You can try putting something mildly heavy on just the screen overnight to get the liquid out, it has worked with a phone for me so it might work with this

Hi Vince, The rechargeable batteries only give 7.2v not the 9v you get from non-rechargable. Might be worth noting for future videos as they may not work under voltage.
Or as others have already suggested in the comments, try it with a mains adaptor to eliminate any battery and contact issues.
I have a few of these one that I bought years ago off ebay before the whole retro gaming craze an another I picked up few years back from yardsale, they both non working now probably something to do with the caps, I think one still kinda works but have to turn contrast all the way up for anything to come on screen.

If I were to take an educated guess. The "heating up the chip" solution would have lasted 10 minutes tops!
Heat dissapates very quickly into the air. Good call on the pressurized fix!

Please fix some faulty Nintendo switch....
in terms of the screen having trapped liquid, that plastic bezel is only glued on, you can slip a knife between it and the screen to get it off and then dry it out, the other way of doing it is displace the liquid with an alcohol bath repeatedly dunking it and massaging it out and then letting it dry out naturally somewhere warm with some silica packets on it.
Done around 20 of these now (and have a pile of parts) powers on then off again check the 5v and 34v on the dc to dc convertor - 9/10 it's the lcd row driver that also feeds the power to the lcd - pull the flat flex off the glass and it will boot - due to age the tft lcd's degrade - NOS screens from China have the same issues even tho there new ( citizen uc320 )
Ps. Watch out for them 2 pads one either side of the screen there around 3-400v when the tube strikes
Thanks for the info. On my last video I did manage to get a shock from the light tube contacts. Couldn't believe how strong it was!!!!!

Do you think it would be easy to mod those so that they don't require double a batteries, I mean you can just buy lithium ion batteries in the same form factor, the only trade-off is for the electronics to charge themit takes up space that would normally be used for extra capacity.
I wonder how easy it would be to mod them so that you could charge it with a cable.

Do you think it would be possible to use some springy steel to make a bracket that clamps the chip against the closed case? Oh wait, just watched that part of the video lol :)
Or you could hot-glue a small coin or something like this (for example one of these plastic coins for shopping carts) on there, something that won't give in. But the tape fix might work aswell, maybe for years.

I bought one to fix as dead cleaned battery contacts it now powers witha fflickering white screen so a cap kit is next .Mcwill screen replacement would give it a great screen but they are very expensive.
The cables on the screen to the motherboard is not soldered. Its taped on and can be removed by peeling from one side carefully.

Honestly I wouldn't even bother trying to fix screen issues on one of these, just get rid of the bulb and replace it with a more modern backlit unit. Will give both a better picture and massively increase the battery life.
you do realize the bulb (backlight) is an entirely different part than the lcd?

A great fix again vince this looks like the issue we have on samsung lcd tvs, here is a link show the lines www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=25371&highlight=samsung+tab+bond+fix i know these are vertical but in post 7 there is a link to the material we use too fix this issue and this fix usually lasts a couple of years, a games console is different due too flexing etc it may not last as long , you maybe able to use fix/material on this sega lcd surround.

i need a game gear.
it has a absolutly bad screen. it eats batteries. it is complete useless. install a emulator on your smartphone and buy a little controller.
@@tech-5231 yeah, ive got ras-pi's, old atom netbooks with Batocera Linux. i reckon its just a nostalgia thing. i would mod that thing with a lipo though. and for the record... a softmodded PSP-1000 is the ultimate handheld retro system. imo.
those caps do not have liquid in them, their tatalem caps
You need to stay away from gamegears, seems like your not having any luck with them.

All Those people who heated up their chips most likely using a hair dryer which BTW would take a lot longer than a heat station were very lucky they didn't destroy their units.
So if you don't have a heat station DONT HEAT THE CHIP!... HEAT destroys electronic components, unless the components are designed to be installed via a heat station, components such as surface mounted resistors, capacitors, transistors, and IC's..
You should only ever use a heat station when removing components should a board have ANY surface mounting apparent "Use a soldering irons as a last resort".
Whoever advised to heat a chip, should have clarified why and further more the target as to what needs to be heated, which in most cases is the solder making the connection/s for the chip in question.
The "Heat stations" heat is much hotter and more concentrated, thus heat can be concentrated on the chips SOLDER connections that have been dried out, essentially called "dry joints" which BTW is the correct terminology, dry joints are obvious as they are dull, so this is what needs resoldering.
ONLY dry joints are the target when one needs to apply heat, but apply heat so that the air flow is directed at the solder joints NOT THE CHIP!!! also try and do one side at a time when targeting dry joints..
Dry joints BTW are caused by shock or stress, flux traces left on board whilst still in production "that's why it's imperative flux is completely removed once all rework is completed", Water or water vapour damage via "corrosive water" or in the above case via Electrolytic fluid leaking out of capacitors, ELECTROLYTIC Capacitors usually older than 5 years are most suspect but not always the rule I have had to remove a capacitor from a cheap charger only three months old yeah just after warrantee ran out :D
Any serviceman that ignores and or leaves aged electrolytic capacitors that are over 5 years old, Have not been educated properly, well its that or they haven't been paying attention in class..

I like your videos, i do learned things from them here and there...
However there is one thing about you that drives me absolutely nuts.
I never see you use any sort of volt/ohm or multimeter and it drives me up the wall how many tasks you could either make immensely easier, or skip altogether by simply using one.
Do you not know how to use one? Is €50 for a decent one too cost prohibitive?
But in my opinion if you can't use, or refuse to use a basic multimeter then you have no business diagnosing or repairing any electronics. I'm no expert on small electronics... my background is auto repair and I'm pretty sure your electrical knowledge and abilities are greater than mine yet you don't use that entry level tool.
