    Brandon, Excellent tutorial. I'm a 68 year old and have recently added trap bar deadlifts to my workout routine. I've always had lower back issues but watching your video several times and initially just going through the movement with an unloaded trap bar, to get the proper form, has been really helpful. Presently worked up to using two 45 lb. plates on the bar. I've noticed that my lower back has not had the stiffness or pain that I have had for a long time. Thank you so much for a very detailed, informative video.

      @This Guy Just about any Sport from Football to Rugby to Boxing to MMA requires cardio. Good cardio endurance is good for general health and well-being. Being solid muscle but having a weak heart is like having a Ferrari is with a fucked up engine.

    • @UsyksmashedFurytopieces
      @UsyksmashedFurytopieces 3 роки тому

      @This Guy training skeletal muscles does not automatically train ur heart and lungs, this is bullshit. If it does, it’s to a very minimal degree. If this were the case, bodybuilders would have the endurance for Boxing/MMA. Ever see bodybuilders/strongmen attempt Boxing or MMA for the first time? They’re gassed in 2 mins and lying on the floor. Look at Eddie Hall and Thor attempting boxing training for their upcoming match, they’ve piss poor endurance for it. And btw, Swimmers have excellent cardio.

    I heard this exercise is a hybrid of a squat and deadlift, would you guys agree?

    • @jackharvey9808
      @jackharvey9808 7 років тому +28

      siIvermate its basically keeps the weight on your centre line as opposed to in front of you like a normal deadlift so it doesn't emphasis the lats and glutes as much conventional deadlifting. It places the weight more on the quads and hamstrings but does still use glutes and back muscles. So I would agree it is more of a bridging exercise between a squat and deadlift

    • @dankmemesgivemewetdreams5933
      @dankmemesgivemewetdreams5933 6 років тому +1

      Yeah think of it as a pin squat

    • @williammikkelsen847
      @williammikkelsen847 5 років тому +2

      Vampire Squid... It's far from a squat, especially if you use the low handles. It trains all the same muscles. And, it's still a hinge pattern. Sumo would be closer to a squat.

    Why does everyone use the hi handles? Those are commonly reserved for those who have long torsos and short arms, or extremely long legs etc. Using the higher handles only allows more weight to be used but less range of motion for thighs/ hips as well as less need to contract lower and upper back muscles. A meso like the guy in this video should use the regular handles for more stimulation. After all, the straight bar DL would be at that grip height, and the TBDL puts you into a more upright stance anyway.

    Good video and content! I only have one question. It seems most trap bars are now elevated these days. Why are the grips elevated? My gyms trap bar is diamond shaped and the gripping areas are flush with the bar, just the same height off the ground as if using a regular bar loaded with 45's. I use this diamond bar since I can go lower and get a better range of motion. You don't get much range of motion with those grips up so high right? It's like not squating to parallel.....less range of motion right? These elevated bars seem to have the grips about 4 to 5 inches ABOVE the center of the plates.

    • @SKOOKM
      @SKOOKM 7 років тому +1

      It's possible to turn some of those bars upside-down, and then you have a grip that is level with the bar. Those types are made to give you the option to do it either way, but the natural thing to do is to have the side up that makes the range of motion shorter without even thinking about it.

    Is this a trap bar squat? Isnt a deadlift more of a hip hinge? Isnt the point of strengthening the posterior chain? I understand you could focus on the lower back and glutes more to get that effect, but idk

I've increased my weight significantly, but I'm starting to get the sharp hip pain during the exercise which often continues afterwards. It's possible that I just have to stretch more something I recently started working on, but I'm concerned of having an injury. Any suggestions?

      Nah no clicking. Sorry you have that! It just feels like a sharp pain at the very top of where my glutes connect. Stretching has helped some. I think I need to get some new shoes too. I actually had a very positive experience my last set of deadlifts and my hips felt better than they have for weeks. The rest of the day went wonderfully well at work and I felt great. But the next day I had sharp pains worse than usual and there is a sharp pain at the very center. So who knows!?

    @BuffDudes would you say the same form applies to dumbbell deadlifts?

  • @neuromancer27

    You say to keep the torso vertical, I thought to work the lower back like regular deadlift you needed to to bend from the hips put your butt back and load the hamstrings which confuses me.

    I'm doing the 12 week plan 3rd edition and in phase 2 the trap bar deadlift is one of the exercises but my gym doesn't have a trap bar. Should I just substitute with regular dl or is there another exercise I can do?

    What would be an alternative exercise if you don't have a trap bar ? Dumbbell deadlifts possibly ?

      The sleeves are far too short for proper plates or any sort of usable weight for most people.

      @@jjwp-ql5rv oh, im sure you can fit on it 220kg(4x25kg plates on both sides+ the bar)... more than enough for the average steroid free joe... do you have any idea where this can be bought?

    Would you recommend wearing a weight belt for this exercise in order to protect lower back?

    • @ossocinco
      @ossocinco 4 роки тому

      Adam Geest 102007 sure. But the whole point is to take the strain off the back and load the legs so if your back is getting beat up you’re doing it wrong

    I exclusively use the trap bar for my legs and people have compared my leg development to Tom Platz.

    Your knees move throughout the whole movement which would cause sheering... the knees should move initially than all the movement should come from the glutes.
