When I was very young, around 20 years old, I got my first ASUS gaming laptop. It had Windows 8, and I always wondered why people would complain so much about it. I grew up with older versions of Windows, XP and 7, so I'm not unaware of them. I know some of the settings were a little more hidden or out of the way, but most of the operating system ran perfectly fine for me, though I did have a more powerful computer at that time.
My only issue with it was the start menu, easily fixed by installing classic shell. Actually I think windows 8.1 is faster than 7 in some situations mainly because of optimizations, fast boot, and the fact it doesn’t have the aero theme plus the improved task manager and file transfer dialog is really nice. 8.1 was worlds better than 10 in my opinion.
I think the video shows exactly why Win 8 was not a susccess. Most people that I knew had it on new, budget processor, laptops and no one ever seemed to know if it was doing anything. When I looked at it, it was almost too over simpliefied and I used to get frustrated trying to find the most basic of settings. I reckon if it was released with more modern technology, it would be better recieved. I wonder what the experience would be like on a current cpu or even on a ARM based laptop.....😊 Great vid as always and you are both calming and funny. Keep up the great work. ❤
Thanks for the comment. Yes, I found it quite frustrating switching between the "real" desktop and the tiles apps which always seemed to want the full screen.
Aah, Windows 8. When MS desperately tried to bring tablet market when it was popular. Personally I really liked that idea and design itself but first release was completely undercooked and unusable for regular users. With 8.1 they mamaged to fix most of the issues but the damage was already done and design inconsistency were was glaring in the retrospect. Unpopular opinion but with Win 10 they finally managed somewhat merge these languages only they screwed on other aspects like spyware, overall requirments and tablet craze was already dwindling along with failure of windows phone which's for me the biggest shame as I loved those phones. And I don't want to talk about Win 11 as I can't stand it. One thing that I really love and and till use in my current laptop is start menu as it's give such a way to organize important apps.
hey great video. i feel your pain with the slowness i installed windows 10 on a Samsung ativ 500t. it looks like you are using a usb to sd card adapter. which could be causing the slow install and loading of the setup process.
Turns out I plugged the USB drive into the right side, which is a USB 2 socket, and there's a USB 3 socket that I could have used on the left side of the laptop. Ooops!
win 8 is faster than 7 and nearly fast as win xp, during covid lockdown my ssd died so i had to run os off 5400rpm drive and i installed win 8.1 and it was responsive enough for opening browser etc except for boot times
I personally liked it. It was the first OS that introduced fast boot and proper SSD support,it was way faster than 7 on SSDs and hard drives at the time. The metro UI thing could easily be fixed by Classic Shell
You could put something like Tiny Windows 8.1 or 7 or something on it. Or try tweaking programs to minimize how much runs on it. Could see if you cold lock it into a higher clock speed or any overclocks or upgrades (ssd, faster ram) Tweaks to how flashy and demanding the OS is could make the difference in how well it performs. Also try it with a usb keyboard and mouse (wired). I have a A8 and A10 laptops and they are much nicer to use when they're using that instead of its built in keyboard and touchpad (even though they're fully functional). Might be taking load off the cpu and putting it onto the usb controller instead or something. They're kinda finicky without doing that.
Windows 8.1 is underrated, but also, Linux would give more life to that Eeepy Asus Linux has better security support than Windows, so you could use like an older Fedora or OpenSUSE, and it would work great, especially with a lightweight DE like XFCE
I'd say use Microsoft Edge, perhaps debloat it a little because might be better supported on Windows 8 than Chrome and it's also a little better optimized for touchscreen for example scrolling is smoother on Edge than Chrome is.
I have a 2013 Dell Venue 8 Pro that has an Atom 1.33>>1.83 GHz four core CPU. Maximum RAM is 2GB. It came with Windows 8.1. It sat for years not being used because I accidentally destroyed the screen, but it would totally support touch if I hadn't done that. This year I connected an OTG dongle that lets me use a USB wireless desk set AND charges at the same time. Windows 10 was installed and it gets security updates. The install is quite small, a good thing with 2GB RAM and only 32 (usable 29) GB of storage. It's slow for sure and really has no use as anything but a toy haha. Oh yeah, it's a 64 bit CPU but only supports 32 bit Windows, so no trying to cram Win 11 on it.
Dual Core 1GHz? Wow that's way too slow for Win8 or even Win7. Try WinXP or Linux with a low-end UI but definitely don't use Cinammon desktop or you'll be waiting a week for the desktop screen lol
I don't really know what I think about Windows 8 these days. 8 and 8.1 were bad - buttons that don't look like buttons, common tools hidden behind weird gestures, and it was butt ugly in my opinion - but it wasn't horrible for a tablet UI, it just needed to be better explained to the user.
hahahaha very true - I have done a "Can it run Crysis" video - but yes you're right, most people want to use UA-cam, so it's a good benchmark for whether a PC can be passed on to someone else as usable.
I find these videos both informative AND relaxing, which is a nice combination
Very relaxing!

My big gripe with Win 8 was Where setup commands were hiding. They lived in at least 3 places! And I was saddled with an Atom processor!

what i dont really like, is how modern hardware dont like older version of windows. there should be some backward compatibility.

Hello, 1ghz dual core is quite slow and 4gb of ram doesn't help at all.
This thing makes my old amd A6-5200 Toshiba look like a speed demon. It has double the cores and double the clock speed.

I was wondering whether you ran trim after each mega update ? But Win 8.1 seems to be better. What about Win 10 ?
I liked Qin8 very much. Didn't upgrade till forced to do so.

Though i'd image the hdd 1st or use a different one to back up any software'and drivers just to be safe
Also try Brave browser on this and set it for maximum performance. See what it can do. Google chrome is horrible even on high end pcs

Update to w8.1 and you will get the w7 menu
The Win 8.1 was Ok, but the 8.0 oh boy... it was tiring, just a vile, and floped attemp, to sell Tablets and Smartphones.
"can it run UA-cam" is the "can it run Crysis" of this channel. 😊

I was not keen on Windows 8 or 8.1 and your laptop would benefit from a Linux OS..
Overclock the cpu
You already had a Nokia N8, right?
