I like what you said about how rare it is to have a singer sing like a musical instrument and vice versa. This reminded me of another singer that I am a huge fan of and her name is KZ Tandingan. I've seen you react to her version of Rolling in the Deep and I would like to recommend you search for her rendition of Karen Carpenter's Close to You where you will see another side of this incredible (IMHO) artist. Try the following key words " KZ Tandingan, Hidden Talent, MOA concert"
"Spain" was composed by Joaquin Rodrigo in 1939 with a long history of instrumental adaptations until keyboard genius Chick Corea wrote the jazz fusion lyrics in 1971 and released the album "Light As A Feather" with Corea (Rhodes electric piano), Flora Purim (vocals and percussion), Stanley Clarke (bass), Airto Moreira (drums), and Joe Farrell (flute), and made it a jazz standard by 1973. "Spain" was recorded in several versions, by Corea himself as well as by other artists, including a flamenco version by Paco de Lucia, Al Di Meola and John McLaughlin in the 1980s, and a progressive bluegrass version by Bela Fleck in 1979. Corea also performed it as a duo with Japanese pianist Hiromi Uehara. The phenomenal jazz quartet Manhattan Transfer also did their own version that captured the attention of those who were not really into jazz. The Light as a Feather version of "Spain" received two Grammy nominations, for Best Instrumental Arrangement and for Best Instrumental Jazz Performance by a Group. In 2001, Corea was awarded the Best Instrumental Arrangement Grammy for "Spain for Sextet and Orchestra". Al Jarreau came into the picture much later when Chick Corea corroborated with him and with Artie Marten to rewrite the song into jazz fusion, and Jarreau made this popular during his world tour in an album titled "I Can Recall" in 1980. Improvisation is most notable in jazz so listen to how Al Jarreau attacks it with his own scat. facebook.com/AlJarreauOfficial/videos/1022121694523395/ In my humble opinion, Gary Valenciano's cover is far more challenging than that of Al Jarreau because he scatted all the instrumental parts while Jarreau did not.
With all due respect, Gary V doesn't come close to Al Jarreau. Al has plenty of live performances you can view on this very platform, youtube, and compare. That is just my humble opinion though. :)
@@SoaringTrumpet Gary V is no greenhorn when it comes to performances though. I don't know if Al Jarraeu can dance while singing this, but Gary V sure can. Gary is actually just restraining himself, but I tell you he's really itching to dance the song off if only they weren't on such a confined space 😂😂😂
@@SoaringTrumpet That's ok. In our world, and with all due respect to Al Jarreau, we could say the same thing. Your opinion doesn't seem humble at all.
He is from the Philippines. A true blue Filipino!!! (Though he's half Puerto Rican) I believe that a US based recording company once wanted to make him an international artist when he was just starting in the business, but he turned it down because they won't let him introduce himself as a Filipino. Well, he still made it big in the Philippines and around the big part of Asia and Europe. He made it big by being a Filipino with his enormous talent. Nobody can stop a great talent, and now, a legend!!!
Gary moves his head because it's his style as Mr. Pure Energy and not to create his vibrato. Obviously, you're not in any way in his league so don't react negatively to his style of singing. He's into live concerts way before you knew how to sing.
Yes , he is professional , hé s half Puerto Rico ( his mum) and half Pilipino ( his father) he’s one of my idol when he was young till now he’s a dancer ,a composer as well as he’s best singer,,,
Mr Pure Energy, i am a fan since the 80's.❤ A miracle of God. He is diabetic insulin using insulin since he was 14 years old. He had open heart surgery then a liver surgery. 55 years old still rocking it.
Mr Gary "Pure Energy" Valenciano is also a good dancer. That's the reason why he moves a lot. It's not only about how he makes his vibrato. Just that, he wanted to dance along with the song 🙄
I'm not an expert but I think Gary was moving a lot not intentionally but because he can't help it. Coz he is a dancer..a legit dancer.. He was like the michael jackson of the Philippines during his era. He grooves and moves a lot.. That's why he's called Mr. Pure Energy. On the second thought though.. Gary has a very distinct sound or singing style. When you hear that sound you know it's Gary. Now that I'm thinking about it, he might be using head or face movements to produce the sound. (It's just a thought, I'm not really sure). And if so, I think it's great coz that's what makes his sound unique.
Chick Correa and esp Am Jarreau would have been so thrilled with this. Great scathing and beat-boxing. Gary is such a great talent. You have to pay attention or you miss some great inflections of Al Jarreau and Ella Fitzgerald.
Chick is a legend ( RIP) in jazz and Jazz - fusion and she don’t know?? Lady plz google: song Spain. You will find a host of of people from many countries covering this song, my favorite a group from around Russia, high schoolers. She doesn’t know anything about Gary and he’s musicianship and presence on stage. Hmmmm talk of and criticizing his vibrato: lady he doesn’t sing opera. Sad analyst.
One of the best male singer and an icon of filipino music... A very good singer and dancer as well. Thank you mam for reacting to mr,gary valenciano. Pls.react to katrina velardes run to you at the music hall pls,
He's a filipino. His mother is Puerto rican. He'll bei 54 next year. He's been in the Music business in the Philippines for more than 30 years. He's a good Dancer too Like the Michael Jackson when he was in His Teens. He's a Musical director., Producer, and composer.
Cool video. Lots of great points, and it's always fun to see people listen to Mr. Pure Energy. A couple of notes, though. On the topic of using head movement to produce vibrato, you'll notice that he's not producing it entirely through the movement, it's just used to change how the vibrato sounds. It's a stylistic choice. Also, his larynx is completely neutral throughout, so he's not placing any extra strain on his voice while doing it, it just sounds and looks like it. Second, while probably it was simply a statement to motivate and inspire the viewers, it's not true that our voices are unlimited. There are, in fact, multiple sounds that the human voice cannot produce. True, most sounds are just difficult for second-language speakers, for instance when a french-speaker tries to pronounce the american /r/ sound. There are however, a number of sounds that cannot be produced at all, as far as research has shown. These include, but are not limited to most Glottals; Pharyngeal Nasals/Laterals; Velar Trills/Flaps; and all Bilabial and Labio-dental Laterals. Otherwise, spot on for everything else!
i saw him at a concert in the usa singing it wit katrina velarde. he was her mentor. crazy song. as a duet i think it woukd take years for me to practice haha
Do not attempt to mimic Gary Valenciano's vibrato because it just so happened that hi's a dancer. Very energetic dancer and singer that's why he moves he's head too much.
Gary, Mr. Pure energy, a veteran singer and a huge icon in the philippine music industry is an inspiration to much of the new generation of filipino music artists. Glad to hear he had inspired you too Natalia to say that people do go outside the box and do things with their voice with different genres. It may inspire you more to learn that Gary had been a long time diabetic but very energetic on stage. Hes not just a singer but a great dancer too. I grew up knowing him and see him perform live on stage especially when hes together with another famous filipino artist named Martin Nievera. Theyre the dynamic duo since early eighties. A very Godly and nice personality that overcame lots of challenges in life. I was so excited to see you reacting to this video. Maybe in your own time you might want to view his duet with katrina velarde (saw you're reaction to her too) singing Spain. Katrina is so versatile with her voice that she can do great impersonations and scatting with gary was a great treat to watch.
