Thank you for one of, if not the best reaction videos to my husband’s rendition of Spain. Try to react to his compositions like Take Me Out of the Dark, Break Me, Until Then. He has almost died many times because he is a Type 1 diabetic for 41 years, who has had hepatitis, tuberculosis, a cardia double bypass in 2018 and kidney cancer two weeks later with another surgery 5 1/2 weeks later. So he is a very special man. Thank you for such a beautiful reaction video. god bless you !!!!

He is such a talented, kind and honest human being. I have this so many times and I can’t seem to get enough. So sad he had to go thru so much but glad he got thru them. God is definitely watching over him. Such a good human being and we all should be thankful to Gary for restoring our faith in humanity, regardless of what religion you follow. That is what music is supposed to do to the listener. Evoke an emotion, whether it be joy or joyful tears. I got a smile watching you fight back the tears, even thought you were trying so hard to disguise them with a smile. Your reaction was genuine. Like many other here already stated i completely agree that you gotta get lots of cred for actually knowing it was Chick Corea who wrote it and Al Jarreau did the lyrics. Most vocal coaches have no clue who either Chick or Al is/was.

Al Jarreu was big in the philippines and had concerts here in the 80s. Since then, gary who was still in his teens, had been doing covers not only of Al’s “Spain” but also “Bleu Rondo a la Turk” and “Take Five”. No one can do those two other songs like Al and Gary.

I can't seem to get a link embedded here but I stumbled onto a YT video of a live performance of Gary doing Spain with Katrina Velarde in NYC this past April. I think you'd really enjoy it (even if you don't make it a reaction). It blew me away...two of my favorite artists together! Just search for Gary and Katrina and Spain, you should find it (sorry I'm unable to figure out how to link it here).

"Spain" was composed by Joaquin Rodrigo in 1939 with a long history of instrumental adaptations until keyboard genius Chick Corea wrote the jazz fusion lyrics in 1971 and released the album "Light As A Feather" with Corea (Rhodes electric piano), Flora Purim (vocals and percussion), Stanley Clarke (bass), Airto Moreira (drums), and Joe Farrell (flute), and made it a jazz standard by 1973.
"Spain" was recorded in several versions, by Corea himself as well as by other artists, including a flamenco version by Paco de Lucia, Al Di Meola and John McLaughlin in the 1980s, and a progressive bluegrass version by Bela Fleck in 1979. Corea also performed it as a duo with Japanese pianist Hiromi Uehara.
Corea thereafter corroborated with Artie Marten and Al Jarreau to rewrite the song, and Jarreau made this popular during his world tour in an album titled "I Can Recall" in 1980. Improvisation is most notable in jazz so listen to how Al Jarreau attacks it with his own scat.

The phenomenal ensemble Manhattan Transfer also did their own version that captured the attention of those who were not really into jazz.
The Light as a Feather version of Spain received two Grammy nominations, for Best Instrumental Arrangement and for Best Instrumental Jazz Performance by a Group. In 2001, Corea was awarded the Best Instrumental Arrangement Grammy for "Spain for Sextet and Orchestra".
In my humble opinion, Gary V's cover is far more challenging than that of Al Jarreau because he scatted all the instrumental parts while Jarreau did not.

What vitamins is he taking?
He married very young, i think at 18 or 19 years old. His gf (now his wife and still is) was infanticipating. He's a very good dancer, at the start like Michael Jackson, and became better than him as a matter of fact. Every girl in the early 80's was in love with him. He became an actor later. He had no scandals with women. He remained true to his wife, blessed with beautiful grown-up children who also had no scandal stories that i hear.
A lot of the voice coaches who reviewed this performance didn't seem to be aware that this piece is a jazz standard or are familiar with Corea & the late Al Jarreau. I liked that you point out certain qualities of Gary's performance & then play the corresponding video clip to illustrate. And very nice to see someone who can really understand & appreciate jazz. You're only the 2nd reactor I've come across who really understood this particular genre & this song.
LOL, at 9:16 to 9:18, you said something about your heart, and he comes back singing "the sound of our hearts beat like yesterday!". That was hilarious. This is the most fun I have ever seen you have to a video. I am glad to finally see what your genre is. Jazz has become a fascinating genre to me recently. Though I am I little more into symphonic metal. At the moment.

I love your reaction and breakdown of Gary V’s rendition of one of my most favorite songs - new sub here! Al Jarreau was one of Gary’s influences and it’s very obvious in his style of singing, especially in his earlier performances in the 80s. Jazz and R&B are more of his hobbies though, as he’s more known for pop and gospel songs locally. You’ve just seen him jamming and having fun with the music and he’s such a joy to watch. Imagine at his concerts where people can’t stay seated. Literally. You’ll be standing up and dancing with him the whole two hours then be ready to go out and dance some more!
Gary is half Puerto Rican and half-Filipino. He also a Type 1 diabetic, and has been known to be near collapse during some of his live performances. That said he is a total performer, Mr Pure Energy as he is known in the Philippines.

@ frankohero: you must have heard Al Jarreau (RIP 2017). The one and only. I would like to imagine Gary’s cover was a tribute to Al since his rendition came out that same year after Al’s passing.
