This is the only channel I trust to cover rhythm game essays on UA-cam. You sir Jack actually cover rhythm games that most rhythm game players play. I’ve seen essays on this genre of video games from other creators and they only cover DDR or old school BEMANI for a couple of seconds then the rest of their essay covers fringe indie games and Guitar Hero for 45 minutes out of their hour long “retrospective” of the genre.
So Jack, keep telling us about Level 20s on SDVX. Tell us a story about the first level 10.99999999999+ song on jubeat. The craziest competitions of the XXth KAC. The brilliance of Chunithm’s accessible yet challenging gameplay. BEMANI’s upgraded cabinets and the proposed ones that never saw the light of day. Your style of essays hit the spot covering this genre that no other UA-cam channel captures.

as someone who started playing in exceed gear (and as someone who has cleared lachryma 20 just last week,) thank you for teaching me important world history
lachryma requiem is the most legendary sdvx song of all time
fantastic video! lachryma was something else entirely when it first dropped back then, when the only 16s at the time were MB, BB, FUP, EM, Daiuchuu stage, Gekkou ranbu, Xross Infection, KAC 2012 and 2013 Emperor side, and the heavenly four with XyHATTE, Preserved Valkyria, Alpha Omega and Blastix Riotz. its difficulty was truly a sign that SDVX was starting to mature further and further - so much so it was the only 20 after the rerate for a while until HE4VEN and iLLness LiLin showed up. it does not hold the crown of the hardest chart anymore, but it still is one of the main things to go through on the road of any voltex player.
really enjoyed how you showed the upgrades of the engine between booth and gravity wars. comparing contemporary charts to old booth and infinite infection era charts is really fun, especially given how much freedom lasers starting anywhere gave to effectors.

What an amazing documentary! I've discovered SDVX in 2014, I'm trying to get an arcade experience since then. SDVX brought to us so many wonderful songs.

Great video. It's crazy to think how far the skill gap has gone. I was 11 dan back in Gravity Wars, and it took until Exceed Gear that I got back to 11 and eventually Inf. Getting clears on all of the old GW boss songs was really cathartic.

really well made! I love the depth you've gone into to make the significance of lachryma appear to people outside of voltex. (also i never knew it was pronounced lachryma requiem, i always thought it was re:queen EM LOL)
Even to this day, I remember Lachryma coming out and watching 5th KAC. I was practicing it for the longest time. Granted it was the lvl15 chart, but I was at the 14/15 where 15's were a tossup of being possible or fuckin just way too hard. I cleared it 8 years later finally as its an 18 now a few months ago. I love this song to death and Gravity Wars will always be my favorite version of the game. I literally fucking cried, I was so happy I passed it

I remember the rush everyone has when Lachryma was revealed. When I finally cleared INF dan in SDVX 4 it felt absolutely amazing because Lachryma and HE4VEN are so much harder than the songs before it.
I remember watching this be revealed on the KAC stream it was insane.

Im not near a machine so I cant even try it.
But I want to say as a non player it does look visually very chaotic/hard to read.
Im guessing its just the unfamiliarity with the gqme along with high density charts and Hi speed turned up?
Then again I kinda struggle to read beatmania IIDX past 10s.....(and probably dont have the time to push through that wall.
One day Ill look into an sim to expand songs/charts I can access)
