OK I'm zone 7a as well, but in Maryland. James you are so meticulous in protecting your fig tree....I feel so ashamed that I don't do the same. LOL!!! I just prune it hard the following spring and remove any dead wood. Thanks for the excellent instruction!!!
James!! So awesome to see you are over a million viewers!!! I started with you when you had a few thousand so it’s great to see how many people you’re reaching!!! You and Tuck truly are the best of gardening and food foresting on UA-cam!! I learned so much from you already!!! I have a long way to go but thanks to you, I’m growing!!!🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻. Thank you so much!!!!!🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🌹❤️
I'm jealous of your system but I'm glad I found your channel its taught me so much. I'm still young and while all my friends are drinking and playing fortnite I'm sitting here dreaming of having a permaculture food forest.
Don't listen to the naysayers. You're doing the right and healthy thing. Stay on course and start your food forest. You'll be glad you stuck to your pursuit. You'll have something beneficial to show for your time and the others won't.
I love how you take care of your food forest !!! Some people just let it lay as it is and clean it in the Spring,,, but I like your way better !!! Less work in the Spring !
You answered so many of my questions in this video. THANK YOU!!! I always look forward to your videos. Seeing Tuck working along with you is such a treat as well. Yes please do a hoop house video.
I love the way Tuck helps and he's really watching everything you do like he's learning lol. What a smart boy. God Bless. Merry Christmas and Happy Healthy and Prosperous 2020 '
Great info on how to grow fig trees in cool climates. Also great information on how to fertilize your soil in the off season. I think many gardeners miss off season fertilization.
Another great video, showing your winterizing techniques. Saving for reference when we build our homestead later on, after traveling for awhile. Thanks as always for sharing!
James, early next spring use a shovel to sever roots 12- 14"inches back from trunk around fig tree to add stress to root-ball, this will make fig tree fruit immensely. This makes the root ball feel constricted. A fig tree will fruit heavily when it has it's roots constricted. If not, all you will usually get is few fruits lots of leaves. Fig trees are resilient and will grow crazy. Be well my friend Happy New Year! GOD bless!
you're great dude, love listening and watching. Feel free to throw in a few more of those little proverbs and philosophy. it goes together with nature :)
Definitely would like to see a video for the hoop house. I never would have thought about insulating a young tree like that, I might try that once I decide on fruit trees. Speaking of which, I finally have a house where I can start my own large garden with chickens! I probably won't go as hard as your food forest, but I'm absolutely using your videos for tips and ideas for it. I'm already looking into getting mulch to prep a spot for the first section of it.
James, thanks so much for the comprehensive info on the fig tree. I have been searching for over wintering methods for some time. This is so helpful. I would also like a video on the raised bed hoop house. 💚💚💚💚💚 for Tuck.
Wow that is a lot of work you put on a fig tree.. And damn, i kept loosing my focus on what James is saying every time Tuck pops up on the screen.. He is just soooo incredibly cute and i want to steal him..😍😃😃
I love watching your videos.. I have learned so much from you. I live in Milford Delaware and I have a lime tree I have babied for 2 years now. I almost lost my tree last winter, but I used some of your tips and brought it back to life. Now it has some limes on it, but I feel I should take them off this year since it's now mid fall. My question is how should I winterize it for next year. It's in a large pot. I'm sure you have an answer for me to help my Lime tree be successful next year. I'll be waiting for your reply. Thank You so much for your instructions.
How wide is your Food Forest? I am just wondering since the leaves-less trees standing up made the scenery appear quite wide... I realized now that the coming of winter season would make a farmer/gardener exert more effort to save his plants/trees before it arrives... I appreciate the lessons I learned from this video...Thank you.
Right? If I could I move south so I can have a longer season! I ve already got some Coleus seeds started inside, i couldn't take it any longer, I'm in for it with it only being Dec 😂
I spent my time before fall, just putting together on paper (many scraps) of cover seeds combinations to sow for winter. The hoop house though remind me of a kid's toy box or a treasure chest for good things to do.
@@jamesprigioni James, do you think the way your saving and protecting that olive tree would work for tomato plants? Could you protect a tomato plant, and then come next May, already have a tomato plant, like 4 or 5 feet tall, ready to start producing blooms? I'm curious about that.
So much work just for a fig! I live in California in zone 9b (9a if the winter is super cold) and have four fig trees in 15 gallon pots, because my yard is really small. It is so much fun to go out in the morning and pick and eat two or three ripe figs before breakfast.
There may not be a whole lot to do, this time of year, but it is one of the most important times to be properly fertilizing and adding leaves (for insulation) to your lawns, trees and garden areas. Also, this is the best time to apply lime for your lawn. Of course, you want to get a soil test performed first.
@@dereka8041 yep I use all of my leafs and I have a lot of them. Something that stood out this year since I've been gardening the past 2 years is when they fall they place themselves where they need to be I have been thinking if I should skip racking in certain parts of my yard
∵§ain†♣∀₦₲ξℜ∴ I always think of winter as the hibernation time where you prepare for spring, and do tons and tons of research. I’ve been spending every second immersed in permaculture UA-cam videos and books, and also working on my infrastructure like building a greenhouse

Do you recommend keeping a spreadsheet or list of what plants and varieties you have, or a diagram of what’s planted where? I definitely could see myself losing track of what’s what
This is so helpful! I have 2 fig trees in pots and am in 6a. I've been bringing them inside next to a South-facing window, but they are ones that are supposed to be more winter- hardy than most. Maybe I'll plant them and try this. When do you unwrap them in Spring? I have a shoot coming up from the dirt - not the main trunk on one of mine. Should I cut it down below the dirt level? Tuck is such a cutie!
Great vid again James. Thought you may like to know that one of the highschools in my area just announced a joint venture with the college to create a food forest in an unused parcel of land between two sports fields. The veg grown will be used both at the school and at shelters in the town. I think the concepts of sutainability and getting back to basics are finally catching on dude!! ;)
