This one is my favourite to look at but I didn’t get it as I’m scared of bees so went for the ones less enticing for them. I have never grown a flower in my life but bought my very first pot rose from DA last week. I’m praying I can do this successfully 🙏🏼
Hope you love your rose and get over your fear of bees. I love being around lots of bees, even if you really get close to something like a sedum which are covered in summer they just seem to ignore you and go about their business
Nice, informative, and friendly video. Fragrance is most important to me, so my favourites are Gertrude Jekyll; it's unbeatable, Susan Williams-Ellis, which is pure white and very healthy, and Jubilee Celebration.

I created a border of 6 Gabriel Oak roses underpowered with tulips and salvias. The rise is beautiful and the scent is delightful. Sadly I moved away from that address but I fully intend to recreate the border in my new garden. I have a number of other David Austn roses in pots. They are all such good quality
My favorite David Austin Roses are Jude the Obscure, The Prince, Abraham Darby, and The Squire. These four roses performed superbly for me as first-year rooted cuttings producing many very beautiful and well-formed flowers with excellent fragrances. Americans very much love the English garden rose- but please don't forget that Harkness is also a superb breeder of roses and produced Compassion, one of the most beautiful roses of all time. as well as Cardinal Hume an unbelievably wonderful cinnamon scented rose of perfect form and excellent vigor. They’re all really beautiful roses and not ones that were on my radar so thank you! Yes Harkness are just up the road from me really in Hitchin, beautiful plants too! I see they are doing a new range together with RSBP of pollinator friendly roses so that’s great!!
My favorite DA roses are Lady of Shallot, Boscobel, and Roald Dahl. I also have Teasing Georgia, The Lark Ascending and Princess Alexandra of Kent in my Northern California garden. They're so addictive!
Love those! I have Roald Dahl too and love it! Lark Ascending I’ve never grown but it’s at the top of the list for some mixed border. Teasing Georgia I hadn’t seen before, it looks magnificent! I know, you could get very carried away couldn’t you!!
I got the rose bug when covid started and I invested my time in my garden so I thought I was going to put roses in there. I googled roses and come across. David, Austin and wow I got addicted. I have 18 rose in my garden and I love them all my favourite as to be emily bronte rose it smells amazing and I can't see and I can't wait for this year. They get better every year. Thank you for your information. It really helps when it comes to gardening. You can never have enough knowledge

I planted 😊Gertrude Jekyll and Tottering by Gently last year and they were lovely . This year I’ve added Alberic Berber and Princess Anne from bare root plants. They are already looking very vigorous. I intend to train the Alberic Berbier over a rose arch. To be honest I think anything you get from this nursery will be a quality product and you can’t go wrong with their roses, Donald (Edinburgh).
Hi Donald, Getrude Jekyll just beautiful with that old rose scent, Desdemona is another one with beautiful Old Rose scent. I’m looking at a rambler myself actually, probably a single to train up a tree, Alberic Berbier looks beautiful though. Absolutely, I’m just thinking about a few more yellow shrubs for a mixed border! Enjoy your roses :)!

Lovely vid! Live in a very humid warm climate here in Houston Texas so I’ve avoided roses. Quite intimidating. But I’m reconsidering and thinking I might give roses a try.

Wow that’s a good list!! Princess Alexandra of Kent has a beautiful scent doesn’t it! The colour of Lady Emma Hamilton is stunning, I don’t think I’ve ever seen it but it would go nicely with my colour scheme here :) Wolerton Old Halls looks a lovely climber, I hadn’t seen that one before! Desdemona I would definitely recommend! It’s nearly time for blooms :)
I would love more space for growing roses. I only have a small garden so as I love scent and colour after to be more picky. So Lady sharlott was very similar to my Lady Emma Hamilton which won over the none scented Lady sharlott. LEH has colour with its beautiful pinks & oranges and amazing scent. Gave my brother any roses that were less of a favourite. I have Boscobell, Basheba, PAOK Sweet Juliett, Shropshire lad, Generous Gardener, Dame Judy Dench, Poets Wife a must absolutely gorgeous colours and smells. Gabriel oak, Emily Bronte, Bring me Sunshine. Charles Darwin, Young Licidas, LD Branthwaite, Summer Song is wow colour, Teasing Georgia, recently gave my brother sadly added issues after 12 years. Gertrude Jekle, a fav of my hubby's nice but very thorny. William Morris, Thomas A Becket, and many more. I do love a good scent, prefer various colours and large blooms. Although my Sweet Juliett is the exception as this must be the best colour and scented rose that D.A has ever produced and understands why it took them 15 years and cost the amount it did to achieve such a perfect English Rose........... If i could, I would move and have a bigger plot to grow them all..😅

Wow, that’s a pretty serious collection you have, I haven’t ever seen LEH unfortunately but the colour really does look stunning. Sweet Juliet wasn’t on my radar so thanks, I will have a look for one, also seems it’s a good grower. I love the colour of Bascobel, and scent of Judy Dench, it really is like an English breakfast tea!! My mum has Shropshire Lad which is beautiful. Bascobel is my favourite rose, what stunning scent and a great repeat bloomer, so many buds at the moment! If there is one rose I love that’s not on your list it’s Lark Ascending, I did a quick short vid on it recently but will do a separate vid on my fave yellow roses, prob next year now. I bought a David Austin Boscobel rose last summer and put it in a container and it bloomed beautifully. It has turned black this spring and I am really thinking it is dead. I am so sad, not sure what to do with it.
Oh no, that’s really sad! The only one I have killed was in a pot and I think it got too wet and rotted over the winter. Are the stems completely black?
@@MJDWildlifeGarden yes, mostly black and what is most concerning is the crown is black. 😢Even though it was recommended for a container I will not plant in a container again.
I have some David Austen roses that they no longer sell. They haven't died on me and I've never used sprays or chemicals on them. I do tolerate some black spot but it does not kill the plants. The only downside to his English roses, in my view, is that they don't last long in a vase but I see he has started selling some hybrid T roses which should do better in a vase.. I really wanted to get 'Jude the Obscure' but it's not sold anymore. My strongest growing disease resistant David Austen rose is Boscobel and I also have Margaret Merril which is beautiful and scented but not very prolific. The roses I still have that he no longer sells are: Abraham Darby, Evelyn and Brother Cadfael. Abraham Darby and Brother Cadfael produce a good few blooms that smell gorgeous. Early in the season Brother Cadfael's leaves start out dark red and Abraham Darby has green leaves with red edgings.
Wow, Jude the Obscur and Brother Cadfael are absolutely exquisite! My mum has spoken about BC, it must be beautiful but I’ve never seen it. That’s a really beautiful collection you have there, I never cut my roses really but it’s a very good point. I love Bascobel and have one in a pot, beautiful colour and scent. It really pops nicely and pairs with salvia beautifully. The most vigorous I have grown myself is Lady of Shalott , but hopefully to be bettered by two Lark Ascending I just bought for back of the border. Thanks for your comment , really appreciate. I know they’re not cheap are they, but certainly over the life of the plant should hopefully give good value. One thing that does make them slightly cheaper is buying bare route roses rather than potted. Hope you enjoy your new plant!
