    Great video Micael! You do great work. I use a very similar setup but with a Nikon D7500, 50mm of extension, and a reverse-mounted Nikon 50mm, f1.8 prime (the one with a manual control aperture). I diffuse my bracket-mounted speedlight with a soft box (5x6") mounted on the flash, which prevents shadows from a lens-mounted diffuser. All I had to buy was the reversing ring ($4) and the extension tubes ($20). The downside is that this probably weighs about twice as much as your rig. Thanks again for another great video and discussion!

    Hi Michael,
    Thank you for being so generous with sharing your experience and not making the process all about yourself like so many other ?content creators?
    It’s really nice that your working through ideas and setups that amateurs can actually afford and that your attaching real images that these rigs are producing. I was drowning in an ocean of over complexity and then found you and your no fuss relaxed approach to getting great shots. I enjoyed your other video about the macro process and found it really helpful.

    One thing that should be noted is that when reverse mounting a lens you essentially lose the ability to focus normally. Instead, you focus by getting a specific distance from the subject -- usually very close. For wary (or dangerous) subjects, a traditional 100mm+ macro lens may be a better choice.
    Also, a great option for reversing is a kit lens like 18-55. This allows you to use the zoom function of the lens to control magnification and focus to some extent. One additional tip for others is that if you use a lens with manual aperture control, you do not need the expensive reverse mount listed here. You can get a simple, cheap reversing ring and simply set aperture yourself.

    What is good about macro photography is you have the creativity to create your own set up for minimal prices.
    I have one Sony a6000 and I got a AF Minolta 50mm f2.8 1:1 macro... crop factor increases the ratio magnification. I got the lens for about 90 dollars in eBay ... imported from Japan to Mexico.
    And currently I am waiting for one extension tube of 49mm... and I am going to test it with some different DIY diffusers made from oppaline paper.

    • @ElRealista.
      @ElRealista. 3 роки тому

      @@JoshKaufmanstuff hello!! I think today's going for APSC is more viable than ever. You have Fuji system which is expensive but very good. But in the other hand you have Sony with a big APSC selection, but what it makes better the apsc is not Sony, it's Sigma. Specially the Sigma trio F1.4 ... Those lenses have the quality to compete against FF lenses of top quality brands which cost thousands of dollars.
      FF is good if you have money and want the extra sensor quality in very low light. Check some reviews of sigma 56, 30 and 16 mm and you would fall in love.
      If you like to adapt manual lenses, Sony e mount it's the easiest to start.

    Hi Micael, I really enjoyed your video about making this super-macro kit.But on a few points i want to make some comments;- Reverse adapter: are they really that expensive? I bought mine for €15,- (Caruba) to mount my Nikon D5100.It doesn't support aperature adjustment, but that really isn't an issue when you read the next comment.- Lens: on a secondhand market-website i bought an old Tamron (adaptall) 24mm f2,8 with manual aperature-ring for €10,-. It corresponded with the filterdiameter of my reverse adapter (52mm) so it fits perfectly.Leaving out your other expenses, this purchase saves you about €80,- in total.Thanks for the diffusior tip. That one is a really good idea.

    For this setup (Although a little pricey) you can use a lens hood for a Canon MPE-65 along with a 40.5 to 52 and then 52 - 58 step up ring. Also I have tested this with most canon kit lenses and the best is the 28-90 they go for about 50 bucks used and you end up with a macro zoom that will deliver up to 3X.

    I do a similar setup on my Canon 760D with a 50mm f1.8 STM Prime Lens. My Lens Setup is something like this...
    ***67mm Extension Tube > 67mm Reverse Ring > 67mm to 49mm Step Up Tubes > 50mm f1.8 STM Prime Lens (Fully Extended)***
    This setup turns my DSLR into an Electron Microscope lol. And I can even remove some stuff from the setup if I think the magnification is too much lol.
    And of course an external Speedlight with a diffuser and a tripod whenever necessary. Also I normally tend to hover the F-stop at around f5.6 to f8.

Would add that you can get a decent set up for even significantly less than this though - I reverse mounted a pretty standard 28mm legacy lens (£15 for lens ebay + £3 for reverse mount adapter) + manual diffused flash and got results like this. Love macro, opens up a whole new world and its got to be one of the most cost efficient types of photography

      I haven't tried it myself, but I am quite confident it would work great. Since 50mm is a bit longer in terms of focal length, you wouldn't get quite the same level of magnification, but I would definitely try the 50mm before buying some other lens.

    Hi Micael. Loving your videos. I want to buy these and put it together. I have a 50m 1.2 canon lens I just bought. (Which I love) But I assume I can use a 50m? Does it make a difference from 40 to 50m, or the fact that it's not a pancake lens? I also have a regular 50m 2.8 kit lens which is much smaller. New to macro and was super surprised that you don't need to buy expensive lenses for this.

    Hi Micael.. I am new in macro photography. I came upon your channel recently and I find it very informative for someone like me. I have watched this video a couple of times and I am wondering if it's possible to build the set up without the aperture control portion. Just to be a cheaper alternative and then I would just move back and forth to focus just like what you do on your other video tutorials?

    • @MicaelWidell
      @MicaelWidell  4 роки тому +1

      Yes you can skip the aperture control stuff. Or you could even use a manual lens with an aperture wheel instead. Aperture does not have anything to do with focus. Aperture controls your depth of field and how much light you get in. Focus will always be at a fixed distane in front of your lens if you reverse it on extension tubes. Check this video for a simpler solution: ua-cam.com/video/EmHm3sMs2Ws/v-deo.html

    This setup, I guess that you can't use it for regular photography such as landscapes? I'm looking for something like this but I want to have something that can focus on landscapes as well. Hi! No, this setup has a fixed focus point just a few cm in front of the lens. The only lens on the market that goes beyond 1x magnification while being usable for landscapes is the Laowa 60mm with 2x magnification. It is pretty cheap and might be what you are looking for: amzn.to/2hxC8n8

    • @MicaelWidell
      @MicaelWidell  4 роки тому +1

      The magnification I got was around 2.5x. But it can easily be adjusted by adding or removing extension tubes. This is harder with a 100mm lens though, as you have to add 10cm of extension tubes to get to 2x.

    • @muddyboy9941
      @muddyboy9941 4 роки тому

      @@MicaelWidell Thanks for the explanation. There's clearly some maths to understand between focal lengths, turning lenses round, adding extension tubes, extension tube effects on different focal lengths, and when turning a lens around, what happens to the focal length, i.e., 24mm inverted gives more or less magnification in relation to a 40mm, etc. It would be great if you would do some instructional videos on the maths.
      I chose the 100mm to give me some more working room as shorter focal lengths have me almost touching the insects, which are therefore more likely to fly/jump off. I now have an EOS R with 30mp, so I can crop in to some extent. I do also have a Jintu 15mm f4 (it's a copy of the Laowa, a Chinese copy of a Chinese lens, ha 😂) and I am practically touching my subjects but the difference in perspective, throwing the background backwards, is great. • @MicaelWidell
      @MicaelWidell  4 роки тому +1

      Autofocus will not work, neither would you want to try using it for high magnification macro photography :) The adapter is for setting the aperture, which I mostly set between f/5.6 and f/11. f/22 would create more diffraction softness than I like.
