I agree, and I don't think you will get many arguments either, he didn't just stick to one genre like every other singer, he did anything and everything. I grew up listening to Michael Jackson, I thought he was a great singer, but even he wasn't as good as Freddie Mercury.
Yes! During the 70’s Freddie voice was a beautiful Lyrical Tenor. As he matured and practiced, his voice became a beautiful and powerful Dramatic Tenor. You will notice the difference when you hear him sing this song at Montral ‘81. It’s one of my favorite performances by Queen (along with many others!).
Is this the one where he towels off his face just as he's sitting down to start it and belts out the first somebody to love that sends chills down your spin? Or was that live aid?
For even more awesome emotion, check out Queen at 1985's Live Aid. This is only a 20 minute concert, but it will be very emotional for you. People call it the greatest live concert of all time.
You just have to do the live version from Montreal 1981 to see how great they did this differently, but amazingly! Wait until you hear Freddie in that one (and Roger)! You meet your soulmate when you’re not looking!
This song live in Montreal is a whole different stratosphere. To listen to it you’ll know why Freddie is considered the best vocalist in rock. But wait until you hear Roger’s backing vocals!
Absolutely! Live from Montreal in 1981 takes it up another level. Freddie’s voice is meteoric & so powerful. The one from Montreal is for me the single best performance of the band. Everyone contributes. Montreal 1981..
You should always listen to Queen's LIVE performances because they were the only band EVER that sounded better LIVE than in the studio. You must react to "Somebody to Love" LIVE Montreal 1981 !!!!!
One of my favorites! But to watch Freddie perform this live, is a life changing event! You must react to the Montreal 1981 performance of Somebody To Love. You can tell this was written from Freddie's heart! It has a Gospel felling partly because Aretha Franklin was Freddie's favorite singer. Well done!
This is another classic. Studio versus live is difficult to pick one. Both beautiful & both brilliant in different ways. The concert footage is from Hyde Park...just the 4 of them & 120,000+ fans.
In an interview I watched recently, Brian May, the guitarist, was talking about how he and Roger (the drummer) attended a concert in 1970 at The Royal Albert Hall by Led Zeppelin. They were up in front, and were blown away by Zeppelin. They were planning on putting together a rock band right then, and in Zeppelin they saw what they wanted: the amazing guitar, the great drumming, and the charismatic frontman. What they wanted to add were vocal harmonies, because they could both sing very well. When they found Freddie, they found exactly the perfect person to complete the picture of what they wanted to do. This is an emotional song, but for me, Life Must Go On is the killer track, because it was Freddie’s last great song and he sang it when he was so ill. Brian I think wrote it and presented it to Freddie, knowing that he might not be able to do it, as it’s a demanding vocal part. The story goes that Freddie downed.a shot of vodka and proceeded to kill it.
They were already performing their own music in 1970 as part of the band Smile which was created in 1968 before Led Zeppelin existed. The band Smile actually had a very small once off recording deal in 1969, and they released an album. Smile were already performing vocal harmonies and focusing on heavy guitars. Queen loved Led Zeppelin, but there were also many other people around to draw inspiration from before led Zeppelin was formed. Such as Cream and Jimi Hendrix. Check out this great interview with Brian May were he explains how Queen came about: ua-cam.com/video/daf9j8xnaOY/v-deo.html The funny thing is that when Queen was signed initially around 1972, they though Brian May would be the main focus of the band, because guitar players were so popular at the time. But Freddie just stole the spotlight.
@@ZENOBlAmusic I will watch the interview.....thanks for the link. But I will say that the story I told was also from Brian......so yeah, I wouldn’t argue that other bands influenced Brian and Roger at all. But the charismatic frontman in Plant was something that they wanted to add to break through I think.
Please do Freddie's Exercises in free love.. believe me this will show Freddie's beautiful vocalisations..its no words tones only..done around 1987...around 4 years before he died.
Enjoyed your reaction to a great Queen song! Please react to White Queen live at the Hammersmith Odeon or for something really different, Stone Cold Crazy, live at the Rainbow.
The key to all the vocalist in the 70s in the 80s in before is that they had no expectations of being “computer corrected” in their vocals in the studio much less on stage where they had to be as perfect as possible. They learned how to sing and they used their voices as appropriate. No gimmicks with few exceptions. Take note of the fact that many groups to include queen used multiple overdubs to achieve their choir like vocals. Some requiring hundreds of takes.
Freddie is a legend. Queen (with Freddie) was the best band in history. Their sound was unique, their talent was limitless. Thank you BroAction for your great reactions. As a new subscriber, I will watch them all.
Exercises in free love. To be shocked by Freddie's vocal range. Someone said , everything Freddie touches turned to gold. Freddie is considered the best vocalist ever
Congratulations for finding Queen, the most cohesive band I know. Talent across all band members. Of course I have to agree with fellow commenters, you CAN NOT miss" Somebody to love live in Montreal 1981". Just do yourselfs a favour and if anything just watch and listen to it. How often do you come across a band that it better live compared to studio?
Freddie's voice is unique, powerful but also soulful. I know many people suggest listening to the 1981 live version of Somebody To Love from Montreal. There is nothing like SEEING Freddie and the band in action but the studio version of Somebody To Love is far superior from a sound perspective as Freddie's voice was stronger and clearer on the album as opposed to the concert in question. You really hear his range on the record.
I honestly think my life would be less rich without knowing Queens music. It's intelligent, brilliant, heartfelt, and enjoyable music, you cannot ask for more. ;-Dx
Many reactionists are doing as much as queen fans will subscribe to we will follow and be loyal Freddie also did opera try. Barcelona. The golden boy. Rip. Freddie we love you.🎹🎹🎹🎹
I saw them twice & were amazing. A friend of mine in the business got me to one of the press meetings & I was standing next to Brian May (the guitarist) he just smiled at me. Freddy Mercury was standing about 10 feet from me leading the whole group in conversation. Then they had a fabulous dinner at Tavern on the Green in NYC. It was so cool...I miss those days....
Hey Bros - You’re definitely going down the QUEEN rabbit hole. Their studio work is masterful. But their live performances will blow your socks off. Check out this song live in Montreal 1981 and Milton Keynes 1982. The comments below are right ..... It’s life changing! This is my favorite song in the whole world! FREDDIE IS THE BEST - Still voted in 2020 as the best rock vocalist of all time. Freddie performed with NO AUTO TUNE & NO EAR PIECES. Check out their live performances and then you will defer that Freddie is the best (just sayin). 😁
Milton Keynes and Montreal compliment each other. My own preference is the former for joyous, heartfelt energy and exuberance. Everything in higher gear, even Brian May's solo goes up a notch. The latter seems to be the preference for so many.
@@josefschiltz2192 Love them both. Milton Keynes for the joy and everything else you mentioned, but Montreal smacks you in the face with the shocking, unbelievable, talent of Freddie and every single member of Queen. The other band members harmonizing are so excellent. That is why this works so well. They're all so good together. ❤
Also, what makes Freddie so effing great is that he had a huge HEART ❤️ . A genuine sweet soul... I wish everyone could be like him.
No one can touch the talent this man had. R.I.P.
When he died apparently he wondered if he would be remembered. He's timeless. Wonderful.
Amen to that sister ❤🙏
