Why I strip almost all copper wire I get

  • A short video demonstrating why I strip almost all the copper wire I get including Christmas lights. I do not do scrapping full time as I have a full time job. So I scrap in my spare time or between jobs as filler work. The prices I used were from Sept. 2014. At that time low grade ins. wire was $0.20 / lb and bare bright was $2.60 / lb. Prices have fallen since then so they would need to be adjusted for today's price.
    The wire stripper I use is the WS-001 Scrap Wire stripper from RBF Products. www.rbfproductsinc.com It's ease of use makes stripping wire a lot easier to justify stripping almost everything.

    Hey brother I do agree on the amount to save before taking in to the recycling yard, I am a scrapper as well. I don't only scrap copper aluminum and steel , I also scrap all electronic circuit boards as well. I you are interested I have a video on my channel on electronic recycling. Have a good one, Happy Scrapping!

    Your approach to scrapping sounds similar to mine. I have two 55 gallon barrels for aluminum. Unprocessed scrap goes in one until I have time to remove any steel fasteners and other stuff. Then it goes into the clean aluminum barrel. Insulated and dirty copper goes in 5 gallon pails until I can process it. Then it goes into the clean copper pail or the soldered joints pail. When the containers of clean metal are full it;s time for a trip to the scrap yard.

      My grate grand father used to do the same thing. He would have a 55 gallon barrel of each type of metal. He used to scrap old cars. My dad told me the story about him. Now i just started doing it like that today. I'm unsure why most places don't take burnt wire? our scrap yard takes anything.
      Also I'd like to ask you for some advice. Do you think it's worth striping or burning? thanks

    • @opinionatedman
      @opinionatedman 7 років тому +1

      Most places won't take burnt wire due to EPA regulations. Burning the plastic is toxic and scrap yards can get fined for accepting the wire.

    but i assume you gonna get a lot of comments about 'dont waste your time' and 'get a real job' and stuff like that.
    i get negative comments from non scrappers frequently..... so thanks for the detailed explanation. a great help.
    next time i get an awkward comment, i will point them to this video. very educational and informative.

    Been stripping all winter long. Going in later this Month or in April. Looking for a good return on our efforts, with copper prices good, early here in 2018. I regret the many times I brought lots of unstripped wire. Never again. Will strip it all, if at all possible! I now obsess over every little piece, and we keep little containers for the littlest pieces of copper, which add up over time! Precious metals! Let's not waste anything my fellow humans! Keep recycling just as long as we can!

    I do the same thing. I just do scrapping as something to do between other jobs, so the time I spend doing it is basically free time. It is worth it to me to spend the time stripping the smaller wire to get the higher price. I am actually working on stripping about a 55 gallon barrel of Christmas light wire and other smaller wire now

  • @opinionatedman
    @opinionatedman 7 років тому +27

    My opinion small wire is a waste of time to strip. 14 AWG is the smallest I'll go. I consider it a factor of time. Everyone's time is worth some level of money, consider what you do for a living and how much you'd make an hour. If you can make that in an hour stripping 16 gauge and smaller I would be impressed. Christmas lights I would assume are a lot more tedious and time consuming to deal with as well. My 2 cents-to each their own.

      I make $16 an hour as an apprentice. I live at home. I think this is more of an apprentice job unless you’re just given the wire. But definetely agree it takes up a tremendous amount of time

    good vid and ty for sharing , i know what your saying but some people can't see it is all ,If this Man has , example , 5 lb dirty copper (plastic ) coated wire total , then he strips the plastic off the wire then weighs the striped wire( say) 3.5 lbs then weighs the plastic 1.5 lbs to see the weight difference , so the 3.5 lbs is the total result of productivity say at $8 a lb (example only )

    Some small wire just isn't worth the time it takes. Its always worth way more money though if you've got the patience. Burning, then knocking off the burnt plastic then shaking it off in water can sometimes get you bare bright #1 copper. Its almost always worth stripping though. Unless you got some speaker wire or something

      considering the cover is just that and take up space and is light as it is, I can see myself having to strip it from every wire myself just to pack more copper into the same barrel/bucket making it heavier and the price is according to whether it is stripped or not as still covered still pays less either way

    Dude? Of course you'll get more from stripped wire. You were able to include more wire. Do it this way. Record your beginning time. Take a box of un-stripped wire. Calculate the value. Strip just that box of wire, nothing else. Now calculate the vale of that stripped wire. Record your end time. Determine the difference between the 2 values. Divide the result by your time. This would be your hourly rate. Is it worth it? That depends on your wire stripping skills and tools used, among other factors that remain the same for both samples.

    how do you make it worth your time stripping Christmas lights? that's got to take forever

      +norrock1 This year it was easy because I had to have back surgery so I was limited to no lifting and sit down work only. Put some good tunes on and stripped away. Doesn't mean I wouldn't have preferred to have been stripping 1000 yards of 10 gage wire thou.

      +Jeff Reisetter what did you use to strip the wire?

      +norrock1 I use the WS-001 Scrap wire stripper from RBF Products

      Yep, you're right, there is no difference between #1, and #2 copper, that's why they both pay the same per pound! (sarcasm)

      Johnny Draco if you're a bigoted idiot you get paid for #2. If you're chill you get #1. wake the fuck up Richard Cranium

    If you are going to strip it all down, you might as well take all of it and melt it down in a kiln, scrape the slag off and sell the solid lump that remains.

    Your suppose to just toss them into the fire and then throw it against the cement floor, it still comes out bright and saves time.

    You need to check the laws in your state before trying to sell copper that has been stripped. In Arizona, for instance, they won't accept it from you unless you have a business license. I'm guessing this is because of all the copper theft that has occurred for a decade or so now.

      I had not heard that about AZ. I know the yards here need a photo ID and any copper loads over $100 have to be paid by check.

      Remington597man scrappers are the only source for their huge income. They wont make near as much money if they aren’t screwing people over for prices
