Extension cords are a pain. Once you get the three wires out of the main coating it’s really not that bad. I wouldn’t give up yet just because the first one sucked. My first 3-4 extension cords sucked but once I got it figured out it goes smooth. I’m a lot like you I do this for mental therapy. I currently have around 60lbs of striped extension cords waiting to be melted. Nice work fella, keep doing you.
I just think about the motors I still need to take apart or a host of other things for that matter. I probably won't do another one unless the copper price gets to $10/lb. :) I'm glad I did it though just to get a vid of it.
Great video brother. I do not like stripping braided wire like that. Such a pain and messy at that. It sheds more than dogs and cats. The clean up is tough. Always missing little wires. We both know we will keep stripping the wire because we love the copper. Watch the pins and needles. Keep up the good work 🤙👍
Thanks pal. Yeah I'll strip larger braided wire but not that small stuff. Actually using a knife along braided wire is better than a wire stripper unless you get the setting just perfect. A knife skims right along the edge and doesn't cause needles. I little tough on the hands in the winter, easier in the summer. Oh well, it was good content for a vid but I won't be doing it again. 😆
Yeah.....I kinda went down a rabbit hole I couldn't get out of. I can assure you the other extension cords are going right back into the bucket they came out of. You couldn't pay me to strip another one. I actually knew it was going to suck and wouldn't be worth it. It's the cold temps - it makes people do dumb things.
Damn. You got yourself a good wife there. Comes home from work, pulls in the garage and you have a stripper sitting on your workbench and she doesn’t even bat an eye. 😂😂
@@SkullerMetals yeah they were decent, just the little pokers got one in my hand like you did. I have some smaller ones I may work on this evening to wind down
Good question, I didn't think to weigh it at the time. I think scrap price for those are about $1/lb. without stripping it, so it would have been WAY better to just turn it in unstripped.
@@SkullerMetals I agree but the cords that are a dime a dozen come with cheap ends, so I was referring to adding better ends with better strain release.
That was a bit of a hard slog. All credit to you for seeing to the end, you deserve a lie down and a nice cold Mountain Dew (or is it too cold for that). 👍
I have not done it myself but I have seen guys after skinning it they would unwind the three wires with a drill at one end and the other end in the vise and use the reverse on the drill
bro i can see a wire stripping machine to your right hand side, use it! lol I gotta be real dumbass bored to start stripping cables by hand, in essence its worth it however it depends on how much you value your time, im happy to just chop the ends off and let it go like that EDIT: Ok after watching whole video I see you start using the stripping machine near the end of the video my bad
All good. So long ago I can't remember why I didn't at first. That was my one and only stripping of an extension cord. As you said, I cut the ends and throw them in with my wire. And thanks for the edit! 😊👍
Strip it all. And for those that say it isn't worth there time get off your ass and strip it. If your so busy and don't have time for it them you need to hire help just saying. I do it because I am just that guy. It's the same with electric motors and sealed units why in the he'll would you sell it as an electric motor. Ok getting off the soap box good job
Yeah I tend to agree. I won't do another extension cord but motors and sealed units I do. I have about 20 sealed units I was thinking of doing a video of - seeing how long it takes vs. the copper I retrieve. I wonder if that would be interesting. I don't do this for a living, it's all my free time, so my free time has no dollar value, only "therapy value".
Yup I use a plasma cutter I can have one cut apart and the stator out in about 10 mins. Some take a Lil longer because they take more cuts and I am still new to the plasma currer

I found that clapping one end in a bench vise, and pulling the other. Works well. Saves the shoulders. Oops; I spoke too soon. Nice job
Guessing the wire stripper on the left is just for looks?

Lol great video. Yea I just strip what would be bear bright at the scrap yard. Stranded is out of the question unless it's huge!

😂 That's funny! Well played.
Lol
At 0:10 Dude is pulling so hard he farts lol
I get a little crazy with the sound effects sometimes.
It's better to have paper than powder
Nice video buddy! Had copper poke me in the fingers it don’t feel good that’s for sure!
Man it's like a needle! I wasn't expecting that one to go through my glove either. Always causes bad words to come out of my mouth! 😂
Did 2 last night on a whim, dryer cable, sucked lol
Well, dryer cables are a little different than what I was doing. Those are nice sized wires. Probably got some decent copper out of them.
@@SkullerMetals yeah they were decent, just the little pokers got one in my hand like you did. I have some smaller ones I may work on this evening to wind down
Scrapping wires like that should be left to teenagers 😂😂😭
Sophia you're so right.
Nice job once you get the machine just right it’s so much easier you are very funny I enjoy your videos👌😜
Hey thanks Dominic, I appreciate that!!
In your experience are newer extension cords still made with copper?
Yeah they still have copper. There's just so much plastic coating.
Do you know how much the extension cord weighed before it was stripped? Curious about the value as is vs stripped

I had one full of powder that was a nightmare
Oh boy that would suck for sure.
Those are the worse
Dont push too much you might get pain in shoulders take care❤️❤️❤️
I do not strip them
I don't either normally. I was on a wire stripping kick so figured I'd do it. Good reminder of why it's a terrible idea.
Putting in the work.
Ever do something stupid, and you know it's stupid when you do it but you do it anyway? That was me the last 3 days. :)
Interesting video my friend. I do cords a little differently but it was a fun watch. I subbed to your channel. Thanks for sharing.😎😎⛏⛏🔥🔥
Great, welcome! Thank you.
Why don't you put ends on the long cords and sell the extensions.
They're a dime a dozen. Wanted to see how crappy it was to scrap. Turns out...very!
@@SkullerMetals I agree but the cords that are a dime a dozen come with cheap ends, so I was referring to adding better ends with better strain release.
Stripping copper wire is beneficial. But insulated copper wire is best sold as is. Just my opinion.
If someone didn't know that before my video they sure as heck know it now. :) Figured it'd make a good video but I won't do it again.
Wen your stripping that wire sounds like your trying to take a dump 😨
Not trying, but almost did anyway. 😂💩
He farts at 0:10
I learned the hard way
Probably the best way to learn actually.
@@SkullerMetals Yep yep
And that's why I don't strip stranded wire. To much time, sooo much waste with little return
Got that right. That was like a work-release episode.
That was a bit of a hard slog. All credit to you for seeing to the end, you deserve a lie down and a nice cold Mountain Dew (or is it too cold for that). 👍
Never too cold for a Mt. Dew!
hard work!!
Thinking more like 99.9% of the population.

hey buddy
I'd go golfing before I spent time stripping extension cords :-) just saying!
That's the dumb wAy to strip extension cord cut them in sections first
I think stripping them in any way is dumb - hardly any copper in there. But yeah, I probably chose a terrible way to do it.

It is never worth it to strip by hand. It averages out to a few dollars an hour. Your time would be better spent going out looking for more wire.
