I took my car to a local shop and they told me it would cost $300 parts and labor to replace this crankshaft sensor. I decided to look it up and found your video and know now I was going to be ripped off. Thank you so much for posting this it saved me a lot of money.

Thank you Richpin! You've saved my car many times. I wasn't getting any spark and I followed your videos(including this one) and now my car starts just fine.
For others replacing a CPS: I found it easier not to remove the starter. I just took off the passenger wheel and the CPS was within reach from a sitting position. Also, make sure you disconnect the battery before going near the starter and remove the CPS electrical clip before you remove the bolt. Its much harder to remove afterward.

I was using a Chilton repair manual but it was not all that clear on what to do. You explained, and showed everything so well I had the car jacked up and the sensor replaced within half an hour. I could do it without removing the starter after watching your video because I knew exactly what I was feeling. The car runs great now.

    Hi Rich,
My 98 sc1 didn't start during the first snowstorm, I stuck a old spark plug on the #1 wire and put it on the valve cover and cranked it, I could see it had no spark from there. I watched your video, but was skeptical. I bought the new CPS and installed it from the top, I had to remove some bracketry to get to it from the left side. I don't have a lift and didn't want to get under the messy car. It started right up! I just want to say thanks for posting and I and a big fan of your's now.

I just replaced the CPS in my 1999 Saturn SC1. What a pain! I did not remove the starter because I didn't want to deal with that task also. I removed the passenger front tire for a little better visibility. This took me a couple hours. The CPS is very hard to get to in the tiny engine space. Thanks for the instructions richpin. You make everything look so easy.

Having just done this job myself, I must respectfully disagree that removing the starter makes the job any easier. Sure, you can see what you are doing with the started removed, but that takes time and is a job in itself. I would suggest to your viewers first try replacing it without removing the starter and just know the option is available if you need it. The job took me five minutes without removing the starter and would surely have taken an hour had I gone the other route.
    Your video is valuable nonetheless!

I checked the connector for green residue, looked clean but cleaned out anyway. I put a new ECTS about 2 years. I have to check the relay for the fan yet, but yesterday hot wired the fan to keep it running continuously all the way home. It was 86 degrees out yesterday and I made it pretty far before hitting section of hills and she stalled. 15 minutes later off and running and made it the rest of 20 miles to home. I don't think I would have gotten that far if I didn't have the radiator fan going

Some cars have a cam sensor, other cars deduce cam position based on electrical feedback on the plug wires (#1 vs #4). On this Saturn the cam "sensor" is actually under the ignition coil and is measuring the electrical feedback( its a waste spark system, 2 plugs always fire together).

  • @RichpinTv

Richpin -- I hope you still monitor these "old" pages -- as I have found all of your Saturn videos invaluable as a strive to keep my 96 SL alive. Question as to the CPS. I bought my 96 SL (DOHC motor) from a former coworker 5 years ago with only 88K. I now have 118K as I have other vehicles but have depended on the Saturn as a daily driver. I always had reverse slam, but I lived with it, until a few weeks ago... In addition to the reverse slam -- I was also blowing out of 3rd gear... and the associated 3rd gear failure code was appearing. I replaced the valve body -- and all is well with reverse gear, and shifting -- but my overall power low end and acceleration is "zero" and my gas mileage is lousy. Prior to replacing the valve body -- all power/mileage numbers were great. I ordered a new CPS hoping that it solves the problem... It should be in a few days and I will install over the next weekend... However just in case it doesn't solve my problems.. any suggestions???.

      @stevenkramer1590 6 років тому +1

Just replaced the CPS and I did not remove the starter. and I don't believe you have to remove the starter. Rolled the vehicle onto ramps which gave me enough height to access the CPS. The starter/CPS is located on the passenger side, and the CPS clip is visible..You bend back the lock tab and the clip comes right up. Recommend using a 1/4 short rachet handle with 10mm socket -- no extension. It took me about 20 minutes to get this done, but it could have been done faster.

On a 2.2L it is located in the back of the engine right next to the coil packs. In a 2.4L engine, it is located in the front of the engine on top of the oil filter. In both cases it will be easier to remove going from underneath. On the 2.4L your gonna have to remove the oil filter, and maybe the starter. I'm in the same case, trying to remove the sensor on my 98 Sunfire 2.4L without removing the starter.

@TheVictorgamez Is the check engine light on if it is that would narrow the problem down.

Richpin06a: Your videos are awesome! I have a 95 Saturn SL2 And I've been maintaining it regularly with never a problem. But yesterday and it would Crank and Crank but wouldn't start. Same thing today. IS the replacement of the Crankshaft position sensor a feasible fix? Thank you so much!

Hi, I just replaced the starter and now the car stalls after i drive it a few minutes. ( around operating temp) It stalled 3 times and started back up but after a few minutes each time. It is possible that i tugged on the CPS pigtail or unhooked it to get it out of the way to so as not to tug and damage it. If i left it unplugged would it cause it to stall. As always, thanks for your help! Much appreciated.

@lockedin1 I have not worked on this vehicle to give you firsthand knowledge that being said it is suppose to be on the transmission somewhere.

@GrubWerm What they do a lot of the time is they will only fail after the vehicle has been heated up.

@GrubWerm It sounds like you have a possible fuel pump check valve problem like the 97 has.

The 97 had a defective fuel pump check valve.Turn the key to the run position wait 3-4 seconds. If it starts now that is the problem.

how about this, you have a healthy CPS.
Only thing is the purple wire has
pulled cleanly off the blue cap.
how difficult would it be to replace that connector? and
how would a newbie go about it?
