Narrow pavements and poorly-designed ramps in Shanghai often force wheelchair users off sidewalks and onto busy roads. Despite China’s rapid modernisation in recent years, disabled access and related facilities are still seen as inadequate in major Chinese cities.

I remember in Nanning, their brand spanking new pedestrian ramps were sealed off because people kept driving their scooters up there. Naturally, this is extremely frustrating because that means there are no ramps for wheelchairs to get down to crosswalks for example. None. At all.

I was quite often in Shanghai and I was always surprised about the disability-friendliness, especially for blind people. In some areas better developed than Germany 👍
Same. I like how they have textured sidewalks. But of course, there are always improvements that need to be made.
@@user-tq9vs6fc9u I actually never realized what the yellow and texture was for as a child lol, then as I grew up I learned it’s for blind people. Like you said, there’s always improvements, but they are doing great!
Our society in general (regardless of country) is very ableist. Really makes me sad and hope we'll keep improving to make it more accessible for the disabled.
If you're interested, search up a video called "Disabilities in Prehistory" by TREY the Explainer. It shows just how wack we "civilized" people of today can be... Cavemen were more empathetic and cared more for those with disabilities than today's societies.
China never even thought of them until recently. In most parts of the world many small things you realize are designed to help the disabled
@@XAssassin_22 I mean... China did think of them (assuming you're referring to those with physical and mental disabilties and not the accessibility), they just did this thing we call eugenics. Especially when it came the whole one-child policy.

@@wastew00d I'm not American you idiot. I'm a native Asian. I've been to Japan and noticed that its cities are very disability-friendly, hence why I suggested that China should visit them. Ready to help each other doesn't mean anything when the disabled people have a hard time moving around in the cities.

In some countries, they can't even cross to the other side of the road, cuz they need to go up the footbridge which only have stairs.

It would be more heartwarming if she could be independent and they would get rid of the step so she didn't struggle. I hate people touching my wheelchair, sometimes they grab onto the wrong part of it and risk breaking it, because they don't know how it works (but they assume they do know)

This is a cultural issue related to 'how much is enough' and people cutting corners. Not about the person themselves. There is a reason why most chinatown areas look the way they do concerning cleanliness, accessibility, etc.
So what is the reason it is so hard to get around with a wheelchair. How much is enough? How about every business in China needs to be wheelchair accessible?
@@wolfvale7863 the reason is chinese mentality is doing ' just enough' to get by. The thought of convenience and future-proofing isnt very high on their list. Basically, a much, much more utilitarian mindset that is very different to western cultures.

In my nation malaysia and southeast asia Since grab appears many of the disability enjoying much access of transportation..even disability also can be e hailing driver for deft , 1 hand disability , both leg disability .. the wheelchair disability also can be food delivery ..my nation got much kind of disability facility in mall , bus , petrol station , office

What is 'barrier free'? I don't understand
A barrier is something that stops someone, in this case, "barriers" means anything that prevents a wheelchair user from getting around the city (e.g. stairs into a building, no lifts/elevators, a pavement/sidewalk curb that isn't lowered, not enough space to get through a gap, bins left on the walkways).
"Barrier free" means there are no barriers (ramps instead of stairs, elevators in buildings, lowered curbs, no obstacles, lots of space).

All the prisons in China are wheelchair accessible. Mainly for rolling the bodies out after the organs have been harvested.
