Welcome to the Foxhole. I'm glad you enjoyed "Megitsune".
Babymetal were formed in 2010 by a producer at the Amuse talent agency called Kei Kobayashi as a subgroup of the school themed J-pop idol group Sakura Gakuin. They were so successful that in 2013 they were spun off and have become a metal group that can fill major international stadiums. The lead singer is Suzuka Nakamoto and the backing singers and dancers in the video are Yui Mizuno and Moa Kikuchi. FYI this video was in 2013 so Su is 15 and Moa and Yui are almost 14.
Megitsune, or vixen, is one of BM's female empowerment songs. Its theme is female fortitude and that women should never be underestimated and I think the song is saying that about BM themselves as well as about every woman. The band here are dancers just miming, but the live concert performances with BM's backing band, The Kami Band, are even better.
The opening has a very traditional tone by setting it in a Shinto shrine and using the classic Japanese instruments, but then Japanese tradition is challenged as the band kicks in, Yui and Moa pull on Su's obi to free her and BM go into an energetic high leg lift dance. That dance contrasts with the interpretation of the traditional restrained dance (nihon buyo) in the break down.
The breakdown is the traditional song "Sakura, Sakura" (Cherry Blossom, Cherry Blossom), but BM even subvert that and Su sings "kitsune, kitsune" (fox, fox). This also might be an expression of BM moving away from their parent idol group, Sakura Gakuin or Cherry Blossom Academy.
In Japan the fox is seen as a clever shape shifter and the lyrics liken women to female foxes in the way they have to change themselves to please others or to hide their true feelings. In the dance BM mime wearing a mask and also putting on make up as another way to hide themselves. But the strength of women is emphasized and the expression of this peaks when Su shouts:
"Otome wa nametara ikan zeyo" and pulls a knife from her microphone.
The phrase is translated as "Maidens shouldn’t be underestimated" (credit Du-metal), although that is a polite interpretation. It's also used in a famous Japanese gangster film called Onimasa and is translated there as " don't you sh*t with me". Some of BM's lyrics can be quite shocking to Japanese audiences and native speakers say that gets lost on non-Japanese speakers who have to experience Babymetal's lyrics through the distorting prism of translation.
Next I recommend something with BM's live backing band, the Kami Band, just search on.

Good "first" reaction and welcome to the BABYMETAL Fox Hole.🦊 No, none of their songs are in any anime - what you are hearing is Japanese music, just because it is Japanese does not automatically make it an anime opening.
Su-metal was in a group when she was about 10 years old singing the songs for an anime called 'Zettai Karen Children' (the group were called Karen Girl's), but that was a year or two before BABYMETAL formed.
'Megitsune' regularly tops fan polls for their favourite song and has been played live more than any of their songs.
This is really a female empowerment song. It reflects a lot of the Japanese culture starting with the traditional instruments (either shamisen or I have also been told koto) in the intro (the traditional instruments in the video were just for show, they were not being played - the guys at the back were dancers too, you will only see the musicians in live performance videos).
The lyrics are about women being compared to foxes (kitsune - which also explains why the fox masks were so prominent in the video) which in Japanese mythology are able to shape shift and take human form in order to deceive. They are saying that women wearing their make up and hiding their true feelings are not trying to deceive anybody, they are simply trying to please everybody - so they are not kitsune (foxes), they are actresses and megitsune (female foxes or vixens) - and they are strong.
The breakdown with the pig squeals uses the exact melody of an old and very well known Japanese folk song called 'Sakura Sakura' (Cherry Blossoms).
When Su pulled the short blade (tanto) from her microphone she said "Otome wa ... nametara ikan zeyo." (Maidens ... shouldn't be underestimated). This is a famous quote from a Japanese gangster movie said by the daughter of a gang boss.
Much of the video was shot on location at the Asagaya Shinmei Shrine in Tokyo. This has become a place of pilgrimage for BABYMETAL fans visiting Tokyo.
This was filmed in 2013 - Su-metal was 15, Yuimetal and Moametal were not quite 14.

No to Babymetal being on an anime opening. However, Suzuka (aka Su-Metal) was in an earlier group called Karen Girls which was formed to sing for an anime. Others will explain in more detail.

    _Sore!_ 🦊🤘🔥
Oh same guys from MK reaction but another channel, i see.
Thanks for coming back with one of BM fans favorite song.
You should really watch a live versión now to see all the energy of these girls on stage, live at Budokan 2014 is a safe to react version, only thing is the crowd couldn't mosh there.
This was released in 2013 when having around 13/14 and 15 yo, so is one of their early hits and is full of japanese elements, like the "shamizen" a japanese traditional instrument, and is a party festival song (matsuri).
"Sore" "seiya" and "soya" are typical shouts among Japanese festival and it works like a "c'mon!" or "let's go" for them.
During the breakdown you can hear another typical japanese folk song called "Sakura Sakura" and they're doing a traditional Japanese dance.
I think you need to work with the pronunciation, so to say it right you can use a translator app, but it reads something like "meh- git - su - neh".
Song is about female empowerment and if you follow the lyrics you'll see about it, "Megitsune" means female fox (vixen) and they talk about women acting with a smile in their face while crying inside, just to fit in society or what is expected from them, when they're kind to you they're not trying to make falling in love with them, they're just being their own way, and men tend to confuse and think they're cheating or deceiving like the mythological fox.
Japanese friends told that "megitsune" used to be a peyorative term in Japanese culture, pretty much just like around the world, but BM is using this as a way to empower women despite the meaning itself.
When SuMetal (the lead singer) is pulling out the "tanto" she's saying "maidens shouldn't be underestimated", that refers to a japanese mob film about some boss mafia daughter before attacking someone. During live performance she does something different and looks really cool doing it.
Megitsune is a quintessential BM song and among top ranking songs by fans, SuMetal said she didn't mastered yet, that's why you will hear her doing sound check with this song before live concerts. One of my favorite version is live at "Red Fox Festival 2017" with a room full of beautiful megitsune only, you can find that at Babymetal Reactor Resource. That's also the reason they performed this during latest live performance at Makuhari Messe 2023.
The arranger of this song took some inspiration from "Memphis May Fire - The Sinner" when adding the heavy drums elements.
The origin of the "fox sign" is really long to explained but here's a short summary:
The Fox God (Kitsune Sama) is the Metal God who sent these girls (and Kami Band after to help them with the metal sound) to unify the world and set them free from Jpop slavery. The kitsune sign came out by accident around the time they created the group by the girls when trying to imitate the typical metal horn sign they noticed it was similar when doing fox shadow shape, they implemented this as part of the lore, imagery, theme and live concerts, the lore is huge so take your time and keep digging and riding the Foxhole 🦊🤘
Btw they praised for real and made a ritual to the Fox God for this song to be a hit and successful, and thanks to the Fox God this is one of their major hits and favorite BM fan songs. "NotACult" 👀
    Next suggestion:
    - _"Catch Me If You Can"_ live at Budokan 2014, GuilhermeCait channel got a safe to react version.
No anime opening on this song, but last year iirc this song was used for Tiny Tina's Wonderland trailers. videogame, along with Gimme Chocolate and Headbanger!!
If you like Evangelion then you'll love BM live shows like Legend I, D, Z and Legend 1997.
Put your kitsune up and see you next time.🦊🤘🔥

They will be going on tour in Europe in April. I’m hoping they go on tour in the United States this year! There are so many songs you should react to. I’ll give you a couple. BabyMetals song Headbanger live at their legend of 1997 concert and Karate live at download 2016. I would react to their live performances. Enjoy the BabyMetal ride! 🖤🔥🖤🔥🖤

[MOA] SU-METAL will slash you. Really.
    [YUI] Yeah. [SU] (laughs)
(Megitsune video commentary from the BABYMETAL members)
Su was 15. Yui and Moa were 13, almost 14 when the music video was released.
Even though they were wearing white robes, this was not the Kami Band they have for their live shows.
The performers pretending to play the traditional Japanese instruments in this video are dancers with the Movement Design group.
Chidori Yakumo is their director. She is the woman performing the fan dance during the breakdown.
Megitsune is my jam. It's still my favorite BABYMETAL song, video and choreography.
Definitely quintessential BABYMETAL and their most Japanese song. You could even call this Kawaii Festival Metal.
This one consistently tops fan polls, and has been performed live more than any other BABYMETAL song.
Much of the video was shot on location on a Noh drama stage by the Asagaya Shinmei Shrine in Tokyo.
I would recommend Su's solo song 'Rondo of Nightmare' from the Budokan Black Night show in March of 2014: ua-cam.com/video/8WBDiLMNZcE/v-deo.html
It's preceded by an amazing short intro from the Kami Band.

I feel that they are daring to withdraw from anime songs because many people associate BABYMETAL with anime songs. I imagine that their songs have probably received many requests as anime theme songs, but they have turned them down because they wanted to retain their identity as a metal band. Nevertheless, there are many references to Neon Genesis Evangelion, such as their cover of Lufran of the Soul.

@@aegonthedragon6341 My statement was "it bothers me" (and many othes). Elaborating on your comment, people's lack of understanding of Japanese culture and music results in many equating ALL J-Rock/J-Metal/J-Pop as anime, not just some of the music. Yes anime uses those genres, but not all music is anime-related. (If anime probably J-M/J-R/J-P, but not if J-M/J-R/J-P, its from anime.). Just a pet rock of mine.
