    I'm definitely going to try some of this. Using hobby-specific gloss coats gets expensive quickly for as you call it 'utility' coats. Save the expensive stuff for the finish coat.

      Exactly! A bottle of this stuff can last years. And if you already have some under the sink for floor use - bonus!

    I enjoy your videos very much, I' getting back into modelling after being disabled in a work related injury. I like the 1/20 scale Maschinen Krieger models it's easier on my 68 year old eyes. Glad you are feeling better it does take awhile to get over stuff as we get older. I like your on line builds and explanation of the different steps and your reasoning behind them. looking forward to your future projects, you are teaching this old dog some new tricks. Thanks for your time.

      Thanks so much for your kind words! I am grateful! Yes - the Ma. K stuff is definitely at a scale that is easier on our older eyes.
      And I'm glad to hear you like the explanations! sometimes I get criticized for it, but I feel like there are plenty of channels that do a great job of showing "how". But I thin k communicating the "why" is equally (if not more!) important.
      While my ongoing projects will be Warhammer focused, I always try to keep in mind that I need to address things in a way that make the techniques and products applicable to any genre.

    Wonder if it will yellow over time? I have a very old bottle of Future which seems to have taken on a bit of a yellow tint; I'm looking forward to trying this product. Appreciate the video...

    • @JonBius
      @JonBius  Рік тому

      I have a P-51 that I gave a coat of Future back in 2006. No yellowing on it. The stuff in the bottle does change color a bit, but in my experience the actual coat on a model is so thin that it doesn't matter. When I have had people say a model yellowed, I suspect it is due to exposure to sunlight, the underlying paint itself (white will get dingy over time) or other factors.

    And after that use acrylic washes and finish with an acrylic matte coat?

    I'm having some problems with Future reacting with some decal softening solutions. I tried to apply Tamiya Mark Fit Strong and it destroyed the future gloss layer. I don't know exactly what I did wrong. Still use it for protecting clear parts but I'm avoiding gloss coats. In my opinion the best Future replacement is Alclad Aqua Gloss. It's as easy to use as Future and you can use any decal softening solution.

    • @JonBius
      @JonBius  Рік тому

      Yeah, it is not as friendly to the harsher decal solutions. I use Solvaset, and it works fine with that. But the Alclad stuff is extremely durable, so it's a great one to use.

      I've had problems in the past with Tamiya and Humbrol thinners interacting with floor coats, and even modeling acrylic clear coats. They're very "hot" enamel thinners. Do decals really look good using this ? I'll be doing some decals soon and want the edges of them to blend in. Do decals do this ? Can you show some examples ?

    • @JonBius
      @JonBius  9 місяців тому

      Any gloss varnish - whether it's this type, or a proper modeling gloss coat, is only part of the picture when working with decals. The gloss varnish provides a nice, smooth surface for application to help reduce the chance of bubbles forming underneath, which can lead to silvering or lumps.
      However, there are several other factors that go into the decal process that affect the final outcome.
      - First, the decals themselves need to be very thin. For example, Eduard uses decals from Cartograph, which are incredibly thin and leave little in the way of edges. On the other hand, Tamiya decals, while usually of good color and overall quality, tend to be fairly thick, which can leave an edge. So the quality of the decal is an important factor.
      - How much of the clear decal film "sticks out" around the decals edge is also a factor. Even very thin decals may leave a visible mark where the clear decal film is. So that needs to be very carefully trimmed as closely as possible to the actual decal printing as possible to help reduce visible lines.
      - Making sure to work out all of the air and moisture from under the decal is critical.
      - The use of decal setting solutions, such as Solvaset, can help the edges of a decal "snuggle down" better, so that is important.
      - Overcoating the decals with gloss coats afterwards no only seals them in against later steps, but can also help hide any edges - but only to a certain extent.
      So while this product in the video is an important step in good, smooth decal application, it's only part of the process. Check out this video - it may provide some additional help: ua-cam.com/video/lXg3S-nryTY/v-deo.html

    Im using on police models and it leave my models foggy. Any suggestions?

    • @JonBius
      @JonBius  6 місяців тому

      Generally that is due to the product being applied too thick, or in moist conditions. (Or thinning with water - I never thin that type of stuff.)
      Try airbrushing/brushing a small bit on a test area. Generally that will "clear it up". (No pun intended!) Why that works, I don't know, but it mostly does. (Mostly...)
      I hope that helps!

Here in the states a bottle of the stuff is about the same price as a burger meal at a fast food place. Although you may want to check around - there might be a locally sourced product that fits the bill.

    I wanted to give a bit of input and did some research and where to get it and such and came across that this is the Quick Shine FINISH and turns out Quick Shine also makes Quick Shine Hardwood Floor Luster.
    It's supposed to be more glossy and shiny as it implies and people have not just used in on wood flow like on laminate floor and furniture maybe you can pick up of this bottle and see how much more glossy and such this stuff is on models oh and apparently Luster has a bit of uv protection .
    i woudl love to know what you think and if its just that bit more glossy/smooth this might be nice oh and turns out you can get like 27oz,64oz , 3.78l bottle of Quick Shine finish but luster 27oz, 64oz only if anyone is curious
    best of luck and stay heather good sir.

    I will respectfully play devil's advocate on one point you made about using Pledge as a final gloss coat. I have done a final gloss on several models and it has produced some of the best high-gloss finishes I've ever seen. You just need a lot of coats. Pledge will 'dull down' after it cures, so after a mist coat, you need a medium and several wet coats. You also need to be willing to do some polishing. You CAN sand Pledge, but do not wet sand it as it will make the finish foggy. use a fine-grit sanding stick and polishing compounds.

      It might work … but Walmart offers Quick Shine at $11.57 for a half-gallon (64 ounce) bottle. A better deal, presuming you are in the US.
      I want to say I DID see a video on UA-cam that tried several different alternatives to replace “Pledge” - which I will always refer to as “Future” - and the best results were from the Quick Shine. I still have at least three full bottles of Future, but I think I may pick up a couple of gallons of Quick Shine just to be safe. A Future-drinking monster might find my stash and consume it, and who knows whether Quick Shine will stay on the market as long as Future did?

    Thank you for the video. It prompted me to test Quick Shine and it works very well for me. I've used the same green label multi floor finish but am curious about the Quick Shine Pure Wax (pink label). The first two ingredients are R/O water and Styrene Acrylic Polymer and its ph neutral. Have you tried that one yet and if so, does it work the same as the green label?

      @JonBius so I dipped 4 spoons I chromed about a month ago with the pink label pure wax. The only difference I can tell from the green label is the pink buffs out to a glossier shine. Sprayed super smooth too. They seem to be interchangeable for airbrush purposes.

    THANK YOU!!!!! For researching and testing out this new replacement for Pledge. Question here, I saw a UA-camr used pledge to mix in with Vallejo Primers mixing it 50/50. He claims it makes it more adherent and faster drying time. Have you ever tried this out? If so, can this Quickshine also work?

    • @JonBius
      @JonBius  Рік тому

      My experience with acrylic primers is that generally anything you mix with them will reduce it's "priming" effect, whether it is an attempt to make them more durable, or to thin them. If a primer isn't sturdy enough in and of itself that it would need additives, it's probably not a very good primer.
      You can of course try it and see what you think. But I have found primers work best as they are, with no additives. FWIW - I used Badger Stynylrez as my acrylic airbrush primer, and Vallejo Spray as my rattle can primer. I also use Tamiya and Mr. Color rattle can primer at times, and Mr. Surfacer. (That one does require thinning, but that is by design.)
      I hope that helps. Thanks for your kind words, and for watching and commenting!

    • @JonBius
      @JonBius  Рік тому

      The gloss coat may actually reduce the reflectivity on the metallic surfaces, depending on how shiny they are. You may want to test that. As to the other products, I've not tried those before, so I wouldn't know how they'd work.
      Perhaps mirrors, or foil? That might provide more reflectivity.

The key is really consistency of application - wet, but not flooding. Practice will carry the day!

      I'd say check in some car builder forums and groups. They can probably offer better suggestions that they've used. I've never built cars, so other than car builders I know telling me it isn't glossy enough for them, I'm not sure what to suggest.

      @JonBius  Рік тому +1

      Thank you so much!
      I've used a .2, .3, .5, and .7. I found the .3 worked OK, but you really have to make sure to get the flow right to make sure it's leaning towards a wet coat. The .5 and .7 worked better by far. The .2 worked - it just took *forever*. :)
      Still, experiment with what you have and figure out how to make it work for you.

    • @JonBius
      @JonBius  Рік тому

      I did that when i built aircraft more than a few times. It can work very well for panel lines, etc. I do caution that if used as a thinner to only use it sparingly - too much and it becomes more like a glaze and it can be a bear to build up an opaque coat.
      But it is definitely a quite useful product for so many things.

    Thanks for this tip, Jon! I've got about half a bottle of Future, a bottle I bought almost 30 years ago, but I've been thinking of getting a backup. As you point out, even if we don't use it as a gloss coat, we can use it on our floors.
    I was wondering about ammonia solutions for thinning Quick Shine. I'm sorry if I missed it, but I didn't hear you mention that. I use ammonia to clean the brush I use to apply Future by hand, or to run through my airbrush (ammonia! it'll strip off the chrome! 😁) after spraying Future. If I got any drips or pooling, too, a little ammonia will dissolve it and I can with wick away the excess with a paper towel, or let it level itself again as it cures. Have you tried that with Quick Shine?
    And get well soon, brother! I had a bad sinus infection right after Thanksgiving, and it lasted 3 weeks. I think our immune systems are out of tune these days.
    YbiC

    PS - the beard is great! Makes you look like a patriarch. "And it was in those days, that Jon did try a different gloss medium. And he shared it with his people..."

    • @JonBius
      @JonBius  Рік тому

      I never recommend thinning Pledge/Quick Shine with anything. (It's in the video somewhere.) Whatever you use will break down the product in some way, decreasing it's usefulness. I gave up ammonia for anything in modeling years ago. IPA does a good job of cleaning the airbrush, and if something harsher is needed, I use MCLT.
      Trying to clean up drips and pooling can get loppy-jawed really quick. I make sure to avoid those conditions so I don't have to clean it up. Too many potential complications otherwise.
      I think I'm turning a corner with this sinus/respiratory thing. But I'm still not 100%. I'm ready for it to be done!
      I think of it less as a beard, and more as a refusal to shave anymore. 🤣

    Use with caution. I applied this Quick Shine on my Evergreen polystyrene clear plastic windows. It basically ruined them...I brushed it on as in the video, I got wavy pool spots on the windows when it dried, which was a disaster. The only thing I can explain is it reacted with the Novus polish I had cleaned the clear plastic prior to the Quick Shine. So I tried it on unpolished plastic, same result. Maybe this is acceptable to some, but it looks horrible as far as I'm concerned.

    I have no experience with Pldege, I tried Quick Shine, I applied it by brush, light coat, on a Gundam Universe RX 78-02 Gundam Figurint (not a model kit) that I had god for few bucks on sale and which I modofied and painted. I had the following issues: 1 it did not really self level 2 in some places it left a yelloish patina that peeled off (I must have had some pooling in those spot) 3 it acted as a solvent on some paint of unknown type that was present on the model (the welloy in particular, and red on the head) and on the metallic acrylic paint I had applied (long since dried!).

      It always helps to try out a test spot or two, especially if the model/figure it not a traditional kit. Quite often the materials and paints may not be exactly the same as what you'd find in the modeling world. Yellowing usually indicates an interaction with the underlying layers in my experience. Self leveling can be a fine line to walk, especially if brush painted. Sorry you had to deal with that!
