Nice detailed video without dragging it out
I used to use this on my jump boots in the military for a really great spit shine!
Yep, same. Our Drill Instructor taught us that trick. They looked like glass
Nicely done Aaron. Have heard about this technique on several different podcasts now, and a couple of other YT channels. This is the first time I've seen it demonstrated comprehensively. Also first time I've heard the bubbles warning on the pouring. Thank you very much 👍
We're glad it was helpful. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for reminding us of old school techniques! Keep them coming!
We will! Thanks for watching!
Great tip! I use a similar product, i think, (HG, parquet protector: nr 51, available in Europe) and found it also works great as a flow improver when hand painting with acrylics. it has a lower surface tension than water. a drop of water with paint will create a dome and deposit the pigments along the edge, this stuff will lay much flatter and distribute the pigments more evenly over the area.
i've used it with good result to brush paint details, entire surfaces, in weathering to create rain streaks and mud mixes with pigments, but also as glazes on navigation lights and when painting large scale figures.
Nice instructional video.
You might have mentioned like any other clear coating, make sure the area where you are drying the part is dust and pollen free. Sometimes I place the parts under a plastic tub (cool whip, margarine, etc) with one side slightly lifted to keep the particles off but let the air in.
That's a good point, especially with PFG. Definitely cover your work while letting it dry to avoid dust, errant hairs (especially if you have pets!), and the like from getting caught in the clear coat.
Another brill demo. Ty.
Great video,thank you.
Our pleasure!
Awesome video!!! Often read about this technique in various magazines and such but NEVER actually seen the process in action!!! Do not know why but NEVER tried this technique nor did it really make any sense either. Now that have seen it in action, definitely gained a better understanding of the process and reasoning for this technique - will just have to give this a try.
Our pleasure! Thanks for watching!
Great vid. Thanks :)
Thanks for watching!
Good information. When I am thinking about using a product I know nothing about, I always hope FSM has something on the subject. I was always leery about this product in particular.
Now I know it is simply a pure- basically- acrylic coat and nothing else, I will give it a try. I have seen modellers using this for years but thought it was "gimmicky". Good to know I now have another item in my tool box. Thanks for the review Aaron. Best wishes from the hills of Virginia, sir! Cork
Thanks for watching! We're glad you found it useful.
Pledge Floor Gloss has been discontinued as of January 2022. An alternative product is "Looks Like Glass" by Delxue Materials.
Ouch
Thanks, Daniel.
Thanks for the tip.
It has been discontinued, but should still be available. We haven't tried "Looks Like Glass" but will test it in the future. We have a line on a couple of other substitutes, too.
@@FineScaleModelermagazine It's not available at any retailer I know of. You can buy it online, but it's going for absurd prices like $38.
Be sure to clean the clear part before dipping. Oil from your skin can cause fish eyes in the clear coat.
Pledge floor polish yellow bottle and can is available. I've been using those instead. Works the same
edit: Quick Shine Multi-Surface Floor Finish works for me too
We did a test in another video of PFG alternatives. You can see it here: ua-cam.com/video/IuJFgK-TCCc/v-deo.html
One thing I have wondered... when I was in the Army we used to cheat on our dress boots by painting them with Mop and Glow... It made them look like a mirror polish. Has anyone ever tried using this instead of the Pledge? I seem to have trouble finding the Pledge. BTW, I strip mine by dipping in 90% alcohol. Let soak a few minutes and it strips it off.
This is a great video! I’m currently working on an F-14 and the canopy has gotten a little scratched so I would love to try this technique to improve the appearance. I’ve already glued a photo-etch rear view mirror on the canopy and it’s already painted and got a decal on it, can I still dip it in future (or an equivalent product) or is it too late at this point?
Great review of a wonderful product for us modelers. I have heard this product has been discontinued, and I’m not seeing it anymore at my local Walmart, but I’m seeing it on Amazon. What do you know about this? And do you know of an alternative product?
We have heard the same thing--that is has been discontinued. As you mention, it is still available for now, and it is possible that J&J may rebrand it as something else. But it is still a technique available to modelers. As for an alternate product that behaves similarly, we have not yet found it. If we do, we'll test it and report back.
@@FineScaleModelermagazine I have ordered some from Amazon, so I will be good for a while.
Great video. I've enjoyed your others as well. Question: Do you dip the windshield in the Pledge before you paint the black on the windshield or after? You mentioned that the windshield mask comes of easier so I'm guessing I dip it before painting.
Yes, dip before painting.
Would you paint the canopy frame before or after applying the floor wax? If after, can you mask the canopy without the tape removing some of the floor wax?
Thanks.
After. In fact, the masks come away from the parts easier than they do over bare plastic. The masks will not remove the acrylic.
@@FineScaleModelermagazine thanks 👍
I found pledge very good for canopy... and not so well for cover white color... because it has a little bit yellow effect on it!
Definitely works well on clear parts. There is some debate whether it should be used over paint, white or otherwise, due to potential yellowing. Some modelers swear by PFG, others swear it off.
Curious if you've found any alternatives to Pledge/Future now that it seems to be discontinued (again). Are there other brands that give similar results?
We have a couple of leads and are testing them out to determine suitability for use in modeling. We'll do a video about what we've discovered.
So what is the most current replacement for this product that doesnt cost 70+ dollars?
Holloway House Quickshine Gloss Floor Finish.
Can you dip painted parts without causing the paint to crinkle?
It is an acrylic-based product, so paints are typically unaffected by it. However, make sure you want whatever part you're dipping to be glossy. Also, if the part is large, you probably don't want to dip it because the coverage will be thicker than you'd like. If you're looking to use PFG as a clear gloss, then airbrushing is the way to go. We've had many articles that show that technique in FineScale Modeler over the years.
@@FineScaleModelermagazine Any chance these articles are online? I've tried airbrushing it, but it seems to apply , I suppose grainy is the best word I can come up with...I'm obviously doing it wrong! :) ...and thanks for showing this technique!
Do you paint canopy details before dipping in floor sealer or after?
Dip your part first and let the clear dry completely under a protective cover to keep out dust and other particulates. Then you can mask and paint your frame and other details.
Is this shining process permanent? Would we able to paint over it and the paint would not come off??
Yes, you can paint over the Pledge Floor Gloss.
@@FineScaleModelermagazine thanks for reply!!!
Is there a reason for not using a brush to "paint" it on? kindest regards.
Uneven application is the biggest reason. Some modelers use PFG as a clear gloss before applying decals to their models, and, if they do, they will airbrush it on. Again, looking for consistent coverage without causing runs.
@Out of the Box Models Thank you.
Since Future is not around anymore, what do you recommend to use today?
We tested a number of replacements in this video. We found Heritage House Quickshine to be the best replacement. ua-cam.com/video/IuJFgK-TCCc/v-deo.html
I've been trying to find this product in my local supermarkets and can not find it anywhere on the shelf here in Australia 🇦🇺.
So what other things can I use ?
Yes, SC Johnson has discontinued Pledge Floor Gloss (aka, Future). We did a number of tests on other products and found that Heritage House Quick Shine works similarly to PFG, but is milky when it goes on, much like AK Interactive Gauzy Agent Glass Coat.
Only, glass isn’t realistic, because aircraft canopies are not made of glass. Actually, if it’s truly realistic, it will be crazed (scratched) so it should never look crystal clear.

Mr. Buzzkill
