Here's What the Las Vegas Strip Looks Like Now. What Happened??

  • Las Vegas is not the same anymore. The blame goes all around.
Aww Las Vegas. An overhyped kinda crummy place in the middle of the desert. No that’s mean. It’s not that bad. At least along the strip. You could find plenty of things to do for a weekend here, and if you want to spend a lot of money you can feel like you’re on a real vacation. Or, if you want to go cheap, you could do that too.
But this isn’t a what to do in Vegas video. It’s a here’s what Vegas looks like video. For this drive, we’re going to see two areas - the main strip where almost all of the hotels are, and a really super rundown dangerous area just off the strip. I think it will be enlightening.
The day was bright and sunny as it is here most of the time. It was about 80’ right before the sun set in late October of 2021.
Now we’re here because Las Vegas is not only a major tourist destination but also one of the fastest growing cities in the country. Vegas has grown by more than 14% in the last ten years and was actually in the top three for fastest growing cities in the country of late. There’s a lot of people fleeing here from California, especially Southern California. They want a cheaper lifestyle and are sick of the politics in California.
However, Las Vegas isn’t all neon rainbows. Sure, the strip is nice, and there are great, really expensive communities on the fringes of the metro area. That’s something I’ve covered in other videos. But surrounding all the fancy hotels, for the most part are long stretches of rundown strip malls and neglected neighborhoods. A lot of it looks like the bad side of Los Angeles. Kinda. Sorta. It’s pretty clear the Raiders are perfect for this place cause most of the city is trashed and rundown and full of crime.
The strip really took off in the 1990s that’s when all the over the top casinos and hotels went in. Back then, it was really impressive. Sure, there are still super nice places on the strip where things have remained elegant and new and awe inspiring. But I found since the last time I wandered the strip, that many of the hotels had lost their charm. A lot of them are close to 30 years old now, and the wear shows. And of course, the less nice a hotel slash casino gets the more riff raff hangs around. I mean I saw two near fistfights in my hotel while checking in and here’s how bad my room looked at the Excalibur. Certainly not impressive. Perhaps that’s because I’m frugal.
But for the most part, the strip is still holding on. It just seems to be a little tired. Like a middle aged dad.
The Vegas strip first began in 1941 with the opening of the El Rancho Vegas resort. Over time, more and more hotel slash casinos have opened up here. Today, there are 33 hotels on this 4 mile stretch of road, known as Las Vegas Boulevard. The strip is usually defined as the area of road between Sahara Avenue and Russell Road. These hotels are REALLY big, which is why there are only 33 on both sides of this road over a 4 mile stretch. Some of these hotel footprints are a half mile long. In fact, half of the world’s 20 largest hotels are here on this street.
The Vegas strip is actually not within the city of Las Vegas technically. It’s within Clark County. 40 million people visit this city every year, and there are 22,000 conventions held. Las Vegas is also considered the brightest place on the planet because of all the lights. And, you are probably not surprised to hear, there are 300 weddings in Las Vegas every single day. That’s the most in the world outside of Istanbul, Turkey. Supposedly.

Compared to where I live in Baltimore what you showed looked modern and clean and palm trees and few people hanging around the street corners. There are more hustlers on the street and more prostitutes. Also your chance of getting mugged in the 90's was very low compared to now. It's still reasonably safe if you play it smart and aren't wandering around alone after dark. Yes we've always had prostitutes, but it's much more aggressive now. Where back then they at least pretended to be legitimate escort services.

Now it looks like cheesy ads everywhere and corporate buildings with no style or color or super fucking boring looking malls, next to Walgreens on the strip LOL. Ok, ok, I still do like the strip, but as a kid in the 90s this place was like wonderous, it was competing with Orlando so every where had roller coasters and motion rides, and whole floors of the casinos where massive arcades. ... Now there's a lot of TV screens everywhere, and everywhere is nasty pool, or nasty nightclub, which is like great if your 20 years old and not bothered by HPV., but boring AF for families, kids, etc.

I lived in Las Vegas from 2016-2021. Like most people I was lured with by the cheap housing and low cost of living. I’m a retired veteran on a fixed income and back then I rented a nice 3 bedroom house for $800 a month. But nowadays Las Vegas is no longer cheap, specially after the Raiders came to town. Also after the pandemic a lot of people from California came and everything started looking like South Central LA, gangs, drugs, prostitution in every corner. That same house I rented now goes for about $1,800 a month, not worth it. The city is more concerned about keeping the tourist safe, not their locals. Living there you’ll get tired of the strip in a month. There’s no real sense of Community in Vegas, neighbors just stay to themselves, people come and go on the regular.
Not to mention how terrible the school system is, one of the worst in the nation, it’s not a great place to raise children. I left to Texas 6 months ago and my children love it here. They get to play outside with other kids have a normal childhood. Did you notice any children outside during your tour? I didn’t either. If you’re young, single, by all means go to Las Vegas, but once you’re an adult married with children it’s not a great place to live.

I have lived in Dallas and I know that heat can be unbearable. Be honest tho, you miss San Diego. If you can afford it, you know more than anyone else, there is no place like it anywhere in the state.

I stayed in The Strat for my second trip out there, back in March, and it was really rough. Right at the end of the strip, literally across the street from really rough, abandoned motels, shitty housing, there's drug-addicted homeless eyeballing you everywhere you look. I only got actually approached once by some shady dude who jumped off a bus, but my demeanor also doesn't exactly label me as "approachable" by someone who's up to something. I can honestly tell you that I would not recommend walking the strip in that direction if you're a woman, or if you're the kind of dude who doesn't pay attention to his surroundings and looks at his phone a lot. And trust me, I'm not just some soft suburban dude. I'm from Jersey and I'm a vet, so I have a good share of experience in knowing what to look for.

I backpacked on my own around the world ( including deepest Siberia and Mongolia etc. ). The only place I felt unsafe was the Las Vegas bus station. Arriving after dark in the evening, it was so sketchy ( so many homeless/ drug users just eyeballing you and muttering to each other while staring at you/ sizing you up for a mugging ) that I asked two other backpackers if I could walk with them for safety up the strip. After being in hostels for months, I treated myself to a night in The Hotel Paris. It was fine. The next day I hired a car to go the Hoover Dam. Collection was at Hotel Paris. Walking through the casino trying to find the car pickup point, 3 times security approached me. I had clear, presentable hiking gear on, and my clear and presentable back pack. They politely ushered me to the the long way around - outside. I guess they thought I might have been homeless ha ha. NOTE : It gets cold quickly after dark. Where Nick's video ends was the extent of my wanderings : opposite the Luxor and there was nobody about, and it was cold and windy. I ended up in an "ESPN Zone" bar/ restaurant having a burger. We sat in silence watching a businessman who came in and sat alone at a long bar get approached and picked up by a young hooker with long legs. It was like something in a movie.

They want to participate in an actual movie, or at least watch a movie being made. There is no reason at all to sit in silence. Being part of the action is entirely up to you. When I walked out one hotel to go to the local quick shop I felt unsafe. In addition, there are tons of homeless people. I was surprised at the large number of them. Where do they all come from?
I went to Circus Circus and was shocked at how poorly they maintain the place. It was substandard and If he is right in this video then there are other run down hotels on the strip.

90s were the best for LV. They embraced themed casinos like Luxor which was Egyptian themed, Excalibur was medieval themed, Treasure Island, etc. Nowadays they removed the themed portion of these casinos even if they kept the name. Back then they wanted to attract kids and family so security would have to be high to protect the kids and family. Now, because they're focusing more on gambling and less on the kids, they wouldn't need the extra security and I think that's the reason why LV has gone downhill. It's really sad because I used to love going there as a kid.

I had a GF that was raised in Las Vegas. We made quite a few trips there...her mother still lived there. Her mom gambled a lot but only went to the El Cortez...the oldest active Casino in Las Vegas.
She said none of the locals hang out at the strip....most go to the out of the way lesser known casinos. I ended up staying about 4 times at the Tez....I actually liked it....low key and not a lot of razzle dazzle flakiness of the strip.

Yes Vegas has a certain energy to it but that comes from people literally coming through to dump all their energetic /emotional shit there every week (what happens here stays here) It’s still cheaper to live there … even tho rent has sky rocketed you can still get a two level /3bd 2.5ba with a yard cheaper than my apt in the city in Denver . Nick, great video as usual. I had lived in downtown Las Vegas near the Fremont Street Experience after moving from L.A. I was frequently hit up by drug dealers/addicts and pimps/prostitutes while living there for 4 months. Indeed, much of the Las Vegas crime activity can be attributed to gangs emanating from L.A. decades ago. That Sratosphere Hotel (known locally as "the Strat") is pretty much on the border area of downtown Vegas and The Strip which is known for high criminal activity.
After doing extensive research I ended up moving to Boulder City which is 20-30 minutes from Vegas. We have low crime, very low homelessness and a good functioning local government. The lakeside area with views to Lake Mead have basically no crime (there's no RTC public bus service here and the people walking around the streets are locals getting exercise with the lake view). Most of the Las Vegas and Henderson neighborhoods need some work (based on my intensive housing research).
People moving to Southern Nevada or anywhere else should do intensive research on crime statistics and school ratings (the two tend to go hand in hand). I now live in an area with no state income taxes, low property taxes, discounted electricity bills from the nearby Hoover Dam hydroelectricity agreement with Boulder City, awesome nature/wildlife and can drive 20-30 minutes for world class entertainment or lose money in the casinos.
I spent more time on the Las Vegas strip as a Californian than as a Nevadan. Most locals go to closer and perhaps smaller casinos away from the Las Vegas Strip. It would probably be smart for visitors to the Las Vegas area or anywhere else to be cognizant of their surroundings and take appropriate measures.

The few times I've stopped it's quite nice, if you like it being decently quiet It's quite nice. However, It's small so if you like small I'd recommend it to people that want a small town experience. From the old train station, it's about a 8 minute drive to Sunset Station which is quite nice since there is a costco near by and everything is close by. Living near boulder station is also quite nice as long as you don't go near the apartments and also, Boulder city is located right outside of Henderson and it's about a mile-ish which is good.

I wouldn't recommend going to north las vegas as that's what the ghetto part of vegas is known by all locals, living in summerlin is also like living in henderson, there is even a casino called red rock casino which I go to often and eat the buffet, there is a costco nearby to the casino although being located about 20-30 minutes from where I live I still go there so living like right next to it is a bonus for weekly shopping.

Yes it is nice and new. And yes I live here. But have you not heard about the gangs of certain people going through and robbing homes in Summerlin? The good thing is the police busted a bunch of them 6 months ago, but they hit a lot of places. West Charleston has had several shootings in the past year. The only true good neighborhood in this city is Lake Las Vegas, or maybe Anthem in Henderson. The criminal gangs do know about Summerlin and it's high on their list of places to rob or home invade. And yes we have always had gangs, but frankly they were never a problem in "good" neighborhoods. I know it sounds bad to say it like that, but it's true. But since the pandemic, people have been hitting the good neighborhoods a lot. Maybe they deserve it for flaunting their wealth, but there have been murders too, and they don't deserve that. You can't deny the crime rate has been increasing the past 2 years. For the record I was born and raised here. I grew up in Spring Valley as a kid during the 80's. And I never felt unsafe back then, because Spring Valley was a good neighborhood in those days. Not so much now.

I can tell you who's visiting Vegas these days. One buddy is a single male in his 30s, living in a small bedroom in Ohio. He and his roommate really enjoy Las Vegas. They try to get the cheapest places when visiting Vegas.

@@weareorigin I'm glad your buddy is enjoying Vegas. Maybe someday I'll go back since it's been so long. I was only 22 when I went the first time. I was much younger than the average visitor. Vegas was more a middle age town in the early years of my visiting. Night clubs were very few and far between. The hotel marques lined the Strip with big name entertainers like Sinatra, Wayne Newton, Don Rickles etc. I would go to an early evening show, hop a cab to another hotel and go to the midnight show. I saw more big-name stars than I can count. The prices were reasonable even for the biggest stars. I might be too old for the party town that it's become.... lol

Exactly. I love those vintage Vegas tv shows. I visited back in either 99 or 2000. It was nothing like this and we went off the strip several times. What I found odd was just how conservative the establishment expected their customers to be. I was always under the impression they welcomed drunkenness and debauchery on the strip. Not during my visit in the late 90s. They would show you the door if you acted up and make threats if you acted out of hand.

@@tjp2109 Yes. If you thought the late 90's were conservative, you should've seen the 80's.. lol It was an older crowd back in the day and a certain classiness and decorum was expected. Maybe I acted older than my age back then, but I enjoyed that environment. I never felt unsafe, and it was like visiting someplace special, not just another Spring Break location. Trust me, the debauchery was always there, mostly under the surface though. I'll say no more....lol

Bang for the buck? The Great Outdoors, with impressive scenery. I'll take Michigan's Upper Peninsula any day (although I have no idea how to make a living in the private sector Up There). A city? I'd rather go to a city with art galleries and a fine symphony orchestra.
