Porsche 996 911 Carrera 2 | Water-cooled revolution | Future Classics with Becky Evans S2 E2

- The Porsche 996 didn’t have the best starts in life with a lot of the 911 community rejecting the changes. Water-cooling and those fried egg headlights were just too much change for the loyal Porsche fans. However, enough time has passed where it is finally being appreciated for being a properly fun performance car.
This means it is firmly placed in the future classics category and we’ll let Becky Evans tell you why.
Have you grown to appreciate the 996?

The 3.4 cable throttle, twin gear IMS shaft, is the absolute best 996 to buy. Get one with the M030 pack with an lsd, Dansk exhaust, IPD Plenum and throttle body and remap, you have a weapon. No electronic nannies, narrow body, and a true delight to drive. That was my last car previous to the 996 Turbo I have, the Carrera 2 was arguably the more playful and better drive.
My mate had the 996 turbo and went back to a Carrera saying there was a better 911 experience drive wise with the slower car
I got the 996 Turbo and am craving the 4S I tested. Less seems like more.
Yes, this is the exact 996 I have, minus the Dansk and TB with remap. I'm running the FVD exhaust for now. But it's an absolute joy to drive and it's been bulletproof after 17 years of ownership!
People who hate on the 996 are people who've never driven any 911.
Nothing wrong with having preference on how a car looks. Most people just think it looks goofy, which it does, in my opinion.
There’s no accounting for taste…!
@@Nlav26992 looks goofy and overweight, in my opinion
It may look like a dramatic departure from the traditional 911, but the 996 is pure analog joy from a lost era of automotive performance.
I always say: if yoau wonder why anyone would be compelled to drive a car that normies seem to revile so much so, that random 50 year old moms shuttling their kids will look over, and flip you off, for no reason, at traffic stops... just drive one, and you'll see :)
I have a 2000 Millennium Edition that recently cleared 195k miles. These things are awesome cars! Mine gets tracked, driven in snow, road tripped in, and generally daily driven. It's not been without faults though. Replaced the transmission when the 2nd gear synchro went out at 177k miles and the engine did indeed blow up on track at 191k. But even with the cost of those expensive replacement items (things that any high mileage car will eventually need) I am still under the cost of what a 997 costs at today's prices and they really aren't noticeably slower than one either.
Great honest Review Becky. It's a proper 911. I have a 2001 996.1 C2 and it's the best car I've ever driven. I will never sell it.
Picked up a '99 C2 cabrio 9 months ago with 134K miles on it, and have logged 5K miles since. Absolutely LOVE the car! Will be keeping my eyes open for a coupe next...these cars are a blast to drive!
How much was it?
@moist.teabag I've got $25K all in - included auction fee, taxes/title/registration and truck transport across the States. Best to just try and find one locally - you can save a bit and also personally inspect it before purxhasing. Still very happy with the purchase and have had no regrets.
Absolutely love my 996.2 C4, always wanted a 911 as far back as I can remember (50 odd years)😂. We tried lots of variations old and new but the 996 just felt right, small, nimble and still analog and oh so rewarding to drive 🍳🍳🦆.
I've owned a 996 C2 since 1999. It really is a wonderful car. I'm about to purchase a 992 C2S and am planning to keep my 996 parked next to it for many years to come!
About gen. 1 vs gen. 2, keep in mind that the second generation had many more problems with the IMS and bore scoring, due to the smaller bearing and less metal between cylinders.
Spot on, I agree completely. The one to go for is the amber light version 98/99 version 3.4
@@motorclaimguru I have a '99, but it sadly came with the transparent lights from the factory. I sometimes consider putting yellows on there, but they are so expensive.
Gen 1 got timing chain tensioner problems
@@avinii over time they all do, as the plastic degenerates, was not specific to just the Gen 1, was never an issue when new, takes around 10-15 years or around 80 thou miles
I dont think anyone questions how they drive. They are fantastic in handling. They are a clear improvement in handling from 993 which was a huge step itself in handling. The 996 you can trail brake without any worries.
Between 3.4 and 3.6. The early 3.4 were with double row IMSB which has as low failing rate as plain bearings in the earlier engines (According to Eisen Class Act documents - based on over 50 000 US imported 996 and Boxsters). Also when they went for the increased torque (read heat load) at low and mid range in the 3.6 they pretty much created the problem of bore scoring at the 5th and 6th cylinders because the water flow balance holes needed to be opened - thus compromising the last cyls in the water loop.
Anyway, 3.4 or 3.6, you need to love it. Take care of the engine, preventive maintenance recommended. But reading the internet stories what you forget easily is that these cars have fantastic chassis and suspension. The Carrera suspension are by geometey still basically same in the latest Carreras as they were in 996 - apart from the optional 4ws and GT3’s double wishbone front suspension (which still hast the same roll center height and initial camber gain but has a lot less sensitive RC height vs. ride height. And the wishbone systems has a less friction than the sticking MacPherson.)
I think the car is stunning, including the headlights. I wish people would push aside their prejudices and just look at it with neutral eyes. Compact, fast, great handling, great power delivery, there is so much right with this car. The 997 by comparison had oval headlights but was just boring.
その通り!
"neutral eyes" as opposed to scrambled egg eyes?
Yes you are right I had the choice between a 996 Turbo and a 997 Turbo, both cost the same but I went with the 996 because the 997 just felt boring inside and out
It's only Porsche people who care or comment on the headlights, nobody else cares. The 996 is one of the best looking 911's IMHO, each to their own :)
I chose a 996 in part because I could get a better car for my money. As it’s turning out, I really think I’ve bought a special 911.
Great Video Becky. Having owned a 85 930, 71 2.2T, 74 MFI Carrera and a stack of other sports cars over the years, I can honestly say my 10/97 built 3.4 Manual, Throttle cable RWD Carrera (pre Traction control) is a REAL JOY, and by far exceeds the ownership and driving experiences of any of the others I've owned. It feels massively capable; it's fast, nimble, with exceptional braking, steering, and throttle response and in Arctic Silver with the original orange lights (i.e the lights they used at LeMans) is really starting to turn heads these days. The 996 is the lightest ever water cooled car, and the lightest ever 911 with 300 NA H/P. I just love it.... Drive one (like you stole it) and proves yourself wrong!
The design has aged very well. The ambers look great! The real purists understand the design change😉
Few modern Porsches have round headlights and nobody has a bad word to say. I like the flowing lines and classic look with the amber indicators.
Took delivery of my 996 Carrera 2 in 1998. Just coming up to 25 years ownership and can't praise it enough. In 2001, I had sport suspension added and sport cats ( which added 20bhp ) and a Gemballa exhaust plus the car was lowered which is not an issue due the hard suspension. It has now coming up to 98,000 miles but still looks great and I kept the amber indicators etc. I could not understand why people changed them as it made the car look slightly bland.
I bought one of these in 1999- it was one of the earliest to arrive in the UK and it was a FANTASTIC car- I'm 6'3 and I could fit in a treat- the acceleration was phenomenal, the handling superb and the grip extraordinary.
The hatred for the headlights have made these amazing cars more affordable for actual enthusiasts. Love my 996.1
You know, the more you look at the 996, it kind of looks like a 928 had a baby with a 994. Maybe I'm justifying spending less than I want to on a 911, but I'm starting to like the 996, and would regret not getting one while they're still cheap.
I have owned a 996.1c2 for 7 years and love it still,,, when I bought it I knew I wanted a 911 but didn’t know much about them found out quickly air-cooled was out of budget so test drove three cars a c4s a leggy 997.1 and my 996.1 not knowing that the internet would put her bottom of the list. I bought it, I loved the c2 over four wheel drive more alive and agile and loved the classic look of the 996 over the 997 which felt old fashioned in side as the tech had dated my 996 has no tech to age central locking and heated rear window only buttons to play with maybe in hindsight the c4s would have been a better purchase but it’s not all about money
C4S would have weighed more and been less involving to drive, at least, that was my conclusion before buying my C2 :)
I've been driving mine almost daily for the past six years. I have zero intention of replacing it or selling it. Awesome driving experience.
My pops passed last year and left me his 02 cab, 12k miles
@@TechnoloG84Sorry about your dad. You've got a lot of work to do to get your cab over 100k miles! Enjoy the ride.
@@corychecketts thanks man
Never got why "purists" hated the headlights. It's pure motorsports. A single headlight assembly that houses the low beam, high beam, indicators, fog lights, and washer (if equipped). Less weight and better packaging. Shame they walked back on it with the facelift.
Absolutely nothing wrong with the headlights in the 996.1 in my view. It is well resolved in a design sense and retains the classic simplicity of the Porsche front end. The headlight fix in the 996.2 looked worse.
The first gen boxster lights look the best, and I have to mention its carried over from the most beastly under appreciated 911GT1.
My dad has a low mileage gen1 carrera 4 996 and also had two e30 m3s prior haha. Although he's had it for ages and with prices rising, he's not parting with it.
Just to say there’s an independent Porsche company in Hertfordshire called ‘Friends Green Porsche’ who do the IMS for about £1,000.00 🤔
So if l was buying one of these just build in costs for that and go see their online cars for sale and repairs and servicing prices.
I’m not recommending them just saying if you want a water cooled 911 look there first at what you’re in for money wise when these go wrong 🤔 Also you’ll also find the front radiators tend to rot with trapped leaves, so there’s an aftermarket grill u can fit to stop that from happening
Changed mine for a 996 Turbo which I’ve owned for years now. Huge value for money.
I never thought she was ugly at all -in fact I think 996 is my fav of the whole line up just because of the runny egg distinction! it’s different looking but still tasteful
I had many Porsches including a 2002 carrera and 1997 boxster. They were fantastic cars to drive. I currently have a 996 turbo and it’s a beast, but feels heavy compared to a carrera.
I'm biased, I just bought one. They're the best looking of all the 911's, the shape of them is very clean, looks best in narrowbody format - rear wiper delete, no parking sensors, no aero. Lightweight, 300bhp's plenty for the road, 6-speed manual and non-electronic steering for the most analogue pleasure. The traction control can be turned off, the futures electric and won't sound like this flat-six does once you get it over 3.5k revs, enjoy it whilst you can.
Really wanted a 996 but like many got so focussed on the C4S wide body. It’s spiralling cost prevented me from buying one and I didn’t want a “consolation” C2. I ended up with a 987.1 CS. But the more I look at the early 996.1 C2 the more I’m like, yeah I see it now. Some subtle mods (suspension, maybe wheels, and a exhaust) and you’ve got a handsome, slender, classic.
Worth changing a fully sorted, factory loaded 987.1 Cayman S for? Hmm that’s my dilemma!
Becks just ❤️ LOVE ❤️ the professionalism, presentation and content of this new style video! Whoever’s produced it for you take ‘em out for a Costa on me please! Top marks girl 👍
Nice video, but is there a reason the voice mics are so low level? I had to crank the volume WAY up, and then be deafened every time the music came in. Shame as it really distracted from a nice video!
Clean your headphones/ ears or your loudspeakers
@@rolexmike I think you really didn't understand the implications of everything you just read.
The headlights is why I like it
I predict the 996.1 will become one of the most desirable 911's of all time
..the 996 is one of the best modern classics and drivers cars that your can buy these days for little money...and some of them have technical problems and some of them haven't. Depends especially how the car will be treated by the owner!
At last some sensible advice, IMS and scoring are so easily checkable it’s the worst reason to not consider it. It’s alive in your hands, doesn’t suffer OPF and isn’t ££££
I own a 1999 911 coupe in manual. I suppose if you grade it on it's driving merits over previous models it excels but what it lacks in character over the previous air cooled 911's can't be written on paper. Regarding which gen to go with it depends on what you are looking for. The 1999 was the last year for old school throttle by physical cable and the more robust dual row IMS which was less problematic. My problem is I am 57 now and back in 2016 I was looking for an air cooled 911 but this 99 came up for such a low price due to the height of the IMS, RMS scare I couldn't resist. The owner originally wanted $15k USD but after a week of back and fourth I got it for $11k. I was struggling with air cooled prices back then which a clean 1980 SC 911 was going for 35k but now that same car is near 50k so I screwed myself by settling. With 103k My car is probably worth somewhere aroung 20k I suppose in todays market up nine from what I paid but nothing like the 1980 SC had I had stuck to my guns.
I prefer the gen 1 headlights over the gen 2. Gen 1 looks classy, gen 2 looks like they are sad and unhappy lol ;)
I drive a 996.2 GT3 Clubsport and love every minute behind the wheel…..
Becky I didn’t realise it was you at first you sound so different
Anyway 996 , owned mine for 3 or so years no plans to sell just a perfect car in my opinion looks good , gets a positive reaction and driving wise it’s amazing
I’ve got Porsche 911 one air cooled and Porsche 996 water cooled. Very reliable car and it’s my daily. The air cooled is more a garage queen.
Nfs: Porsche 2000. Oh yes❤
I’d have this rather than the Z3 M
People who hate the 996 head lights know nothing about porsche EVO track cars and lemann racing, where do you think the desig. Came from????
I love my 996. I picked it up in Yokohama. Several videos on my channel.
J'ai la turbo bon c'est un autre monde.. mais étonnamment le look de la 3,4 j'aime bien surtout avec ces clignotants oranges.
Hi Becky, I just discovered you and I'm following you. Do you think the 2007 987 Cayman will become one of the classics in the future? Greetings from Turkey!😊
Every 911 is a classic, even the current generation. Does future classic have to have increasing monetary value?
I am biased, but I prefer the gen 1 headlights and no one complained about them on the GT1.
Agreed, better shape
I own exactly the same car. Love it!
Did you go halves ? How do you share it ? Who gets it at the weekend?
Love the headlights great looking car owner looks like a nice guy too
Oh flip! I miss my 996, I'm buying another 1 tomorrow, 100%
I sold my 996 Carrera 2 last year and I miss it every day.
After 20years, mine always bring a smile. 😊
on what to get, get a MK1 not what she says.
First guys and that 996 its beautiful
They've aged so well
Having multiple 911s, I don't get why some keep knocking on the 996. It is a Real 911 isn't it... minus the boxster, does the 996 share with anything else, and 996 Turbos are some of the best 911s ever made. Every Gen 911 has their distinctiveness, not every one can have every Gen, buy the one you can afford, then buy the one you love...to some that's the one they can afford.
ポルシェ996 文字素晴らしい車ですが、私は911 カレラturboが好きです🤩😎👍
Those “Fried-egg” headlights looked way better on the 9n3 VW Polo 😋
Love our 996
Lovely.
A very polite review👍
Lovely lovely lovely Porsche sweet sweet car
I like the headlights lol
I owned a 1999 996 version and was glad to see the back of it 5 years later. Terrible plastic interior, IMS issues, ugly orange indicators, Boxter front end, depreciation beyond belief. That's no future classic buddy !!
Open deck, wet sump, bore scoring, IMS(the fact that it even exists), overheating of cylinders...
And yet virtually no 3.4 s ever suffered from any problems?
@@motorclaimguru So untrue :D there are tons of those that did and I'm not talking from the "internet knowledge" but actual mechanics or acquaintances that needed for isntance iron-sleeve the cylinders.
@@8359sthat was the 3.6's mate
Remember when they were 10-15k all day. Thanks to social media, not anymore
Real talk time: The first gen 996 headdlights are: a. actually cool, especially in clear, and b. far superior to the 'fixed' version of the 996.2.
Theyre from the legendary 911 GT1, crazy how people forget this..
Is making them clear a mod?
I wouldnt say so, no, since they were original hardware for euro models (since euros didnt have the DOT requirement that the light remain orange, even when not in the process of blinking, but they changed to all clear at some point during the run, I believ the boxster stuck with the orange blinker for its run, both cars are swappable. .For me the clears look the business, and really puts a bow on the headlight sitch - which Ive done a complete 180 on, first hating them and growing 'ok with them' to now loving em. I think the 1st generation 996 headlights are the best of the bunch and, I now love them and seek them out, I wouldnt want a car with the 'refresh' personally. Time is a funny thing. lol @@Rainyfeels
Someday..
i also💛996 v much‼️
A car that I believe is a great was to shoe Porsche design
Nearby bought one, but bought a brilliant bargain Maserati Gransport instead; no regrets!
That 996 is a classic and saved the whole company
The Boxster and Cayenne saved the company. Not the 911
@@jamesowendesign do better research ..you’re wrong
The 996 saved Porsche
She said if you're stuck on the headlights go for gen 2. NOOOOOOO!!!!! Bad advice. The Gen 1 headlights are prettier, and in fact awesome, Gen 2 are ugly! But, ok, if you want a single row IMSB that will blow up your engine, go for gen 2. If you want bore scoring go for Gen 2. If you want useless option sheet add ons go for Gen 2. If you want a pure 911 go for Gen 1.
Please have a pro inspect the engine with a fine toothed comb before purchase. M96 engine is hit or miss. Plenty of horror stories online. You may get lucky or unlucky. Prices are low for a reason and it isn't for its looks.
Production is duff.

6:45 "not breaking the bank or the speed limit". Translation: Its cheap and slow.
its all relative. Average 996 Carrera cost is £15k and 0-60mph in just under 5 seconds.
You are absolutely gorgeous❤
Creepy
I do not like them..... too slim on the body...ugly headlamps...built cheap...bad engines that have bore scoring and IMS issues..... all 911 owners poo hoo the 944....how many do you see with engine issues??? yep hardly any!! go buy a 944 TURBO ...way better car. For me sad that it took until the 991.1 for Porsche to make a truely modern car! PS have owned x13 Porsches inc 996, 997...
