    Great information! Just like in the Coast Guard, we still teach all the young ones celestial navigation and chart plotting skills. It's always easy to punch in your destination on a GPS, but you still have to understand the basics.

      Very true Adam, and that's why Maverick does it. Paper map is very reliable, but only if you know how to read it. Thanks!

    Trip planning homework? Nice. It drives my wife crazy when we travel, I do almost the exact same thing. I appreciate you showing what Maverick expects in the different aspects of the job. My wife's car had those blade wipers, not impressed with them for winter weather. I ended up with the hybrid blade and have had better luck with them. You and the Mrs. take care.

    Great video Craig. It's been a loooooong time since I last had to trip plan. In the '70s all we had was an atlas. No GPS or cell phones. Had to contact shippers/receivers by landline from a truck stop where many had multiple pay phones for drivers to use. CB came in handy for directions too either from other drivers or base unit users that knew the area. Directed a few other drivers to their destination myself back then.

    Hey Craig, love your videos!!! I do understand that this video is one and a half years old, but I've seen some comments as new as a week ago. You may have covered it earlier and I missed it, but Maverick no longer has a temperature controlled division. I just submitted my application and when I asked the recruiter about TCD he told me that they sold it to KLLM. Have a good one and keep posting videos. They are some of the best that I have seen on UA-cam.

    I was raised watching my grandfather plan our family trips on the Atlas. As a kid I would take one of his maps and put my finger on my hometown of Charlotte and trace a place I've always wanted to go like The Grand Canyon and trace with my finger how to get there. I didn't know as an 8 year old that my love for maps and trip planning would help me in as a career trucker.

    Good video. Haven't really trip planned using a atlas that way since the 90's. After following along with you, I know I need a lot more practice, glad for the heads up. Trying to calculate load checks spots, ETA's, and (hopefully) able to find a place to shut down. Even though that's how I started, it seems really daunting now without a GPS. Does the QC GPS show (and can I use it) to find rest areas/truck stops that could be used? Trying not to freak out prematurely about the feeling of driving blind, not knowing were anything really is. If that makes any sense.

    • @CraigRyan
      @CraigRyan  5 років тому +1

      Hi CraigFX1, I show how to trip plan with an atlas because Maverick required it, and it's good practice. In reality on the road I found that I could do it all pretty quickly with my brain, experience, gps, and road atlas. The gps is an invaluable tool in my opinion. It'll all come together for you!

    • @CraigRyan
      @CraigRyan  5 років тому

      David, it used to be I didn't take company per diem because it could be itemized on schedule A on your taxes. The tax law changes have changed all of that. I'm not at all sure what to do about it now. A tax accountant would be the one to ask.

    That's good for your first load. But after you get unloaded, and your dispatcher sends you the new assignment for the new pick up and delivery do you stay on "duty not driving on your log book" while you are looking up this information and writing everything down since you are working on your trip plan? How long does it usually take to go through the map book, plot out your route and write everything down?

    • @CraigRyan
      @CraigRyan  Рік тому

      Good question Danny, I don't think looking at a map or google maps while relaxing after work is necessarily on duty. You also get very quick at this after you've been everywhere.

    Hey Craig gr8t informative vid as usual with a lot of important information which is appreciated as usual. Question?? How many miles is between each mile marker or exits or is it differ from mile marker (mm) to mm. I ask this because it seem like this is how you determine your total miles travel on each interstate or route. Thnx

    • @CraigRyan
      @CraigRyan  6 років тому +1

      Hi Jerry, good question. In almost all of the states the exit numbers are the same as the mile marker they are at on the highway. ie Exit 37 is at mile marker 37. Exceptions to this are notably New York and I think one or two others. I think NY is hesitant to change it's convention because it would very expensive to resign the length of the New York Tollway etc.

  • @chilloften
    @chilloften 3 роки тому

    I don’t comprehend how you’re seeing which exits to take? Like exit 39 in Indiana, I don’t see these or mile markers on my atlas. I feel I’m missing something.

    • @CraigRyan
      @CraigRyan  3 роки тому

      In the full size atlas the exit numbers are there. They correspond to the mile marker except in NY and an couple of other places. Look closely at any state and the exit numbers will be there as a guide.

    Hi Craig, Do you have to worry about weight limits and height's? In the philadelphia area they are limiting what roads we can go down and also they're lowering weights on some of the roads even. :( Can you find them in the maps? Thanks Craig glad to see you're even sounding better so I know you're getting better! OH for windshields I use Prestone De-Icer it has an adjustable tip so you don't have a hard stream and getting on the paint, for me works really well . :) It's supposed to have some refreeze protection but when your driving and wanting to get going it sometimes refreezes. I'm surprised Maverick doesnt have you teaching and coming home on the weekends at the main campus. I guess you can't go in a truck with a student so you could still get some pay while your down.

    • @CraigRyan
      @CraigRyan  6 років тому +1

      Good point Webber, I'm always thinking and looking for weight limit signs. In the front of the road atlas is a section with restricted roads, it's always a good idea to check it before taking US or State highways. It's amazing how many places we can't go with a truck. A town close to me, Pendleton, IN made IN38 through their town off limits to trucks, with no truck route or detour signs.

    • @chilloften
      @chilloften 3 роки тому

      @@CraigRyan indeed, I think it was 37 but I can’t remember it said on a sign, 8miles ahead no trucks, use alternate route. I had no idea where to pull in and read or look up things, I was lost for hours and finally came to a green metal bridge that I was scared to go under/through, no signage in sight. I stopped. Finally I saw a sleeper go thru and finally got to 69 s somehow someway. Amen.

      😂😂😂😂 There has to be some kind of balance here between the using the map and gps. If you sit there and try to calculate your miles/routes by hand for every load you’ll probably end up in the nut house. If you only use the gps, it might get you in trouble if you follow it blindly. Why not just use the gps as a tool to plan your trip and cross reference the plan to the map to make sure it is valid?

      Craig Ryan cool! That way they know what is in the pudding. 👍 The nice thing is that a lot of companies already give you a suggested route to follow and all you have to do is cross reference that to the atlas, then use the gps as a tool to help you get there. So when the gps fails(and it will at times), no problem, now you will know how to read the atlas and get there. 👍 Redundancy is a good thing to have.
