The “peaceful look” seems to me to be a steady gaze without a hard edge to it. No aggression, no ‘come hither’. A softened, steady gaze; possibly more into the distance than on the immediate surroundings.
To me (since i have this look without even trying, allegedly according to friends) it’s actually caused by being with your head on the clouds or looking through someone’s else soul.
When it comes to ethereal essence, I always think about Luna Lovegood from harry potter. She has very subtle facial expressions all the time. So I think that is a key of ethereal look. ( Not to mention her dreamy personality, extremely low contrasted coloring and angelic facial features!)
Ethereal isn’t a style- essence is a part of you!! if you have it you have it but you can’t force it through clothes because it’ll look more like a costume and your clothes are wearing you instead of the other way around!
I'm torn between bursting the positive bubble here, but a factor may be that 90% of the INFJs on the Internet are mistyped. The descriptions are so overblown that they literally attract every type, as well as the statistical rarity of INFJs, and INXJs as a whole. Dominant Ni is just a function, it doesn't at all make for an interesting person, and that goes for intuitive bias as a whole.
Statistically speaking, it's more likely to find an INFJ on a video like this because of our near obsessive need for self exploration, discovery, and growth. It's hardly a random sampling pool. This kind of video will attract certain people. But yes it is true, there are a number of people who have mistyped themselves, MBTI, Kibbe, DYT, e. And that's okay 🤷 they'll discover themselves when they're ready.
Infj here !!! Type 4w5 ;) and yes I am a real infj. I definitely agree a good portion of SF and NF types are mistyped...but life is an journey and as your dive deeper you will discover the tribe you belong in 15 years of studying Jung theory...and still sometimes I wonder ...
Love that you mentioned INFJs as potentially looking more ethereal. I'm an INFJ and I've been told I have ethereal essence, and I think a large part of it is the zoned out peaceful look (I'm also an enneagram 9, so peaceful and zoned out is my natural state haha). If you know about the cognitive functions in MBTI, it's the signature "Ni stare", which comes with inferior Se. Ni stare means you aren't really focused on anything happening in the moment, and are probably more inside of your own head than anything else. INTJs have dominant Ni too, but are much more aware of their surroundings and have a much more cold and calculating stare because of their aux Te. INFJs have aux Fe, which causes them to appear much less harsh and lets their Ni shine through more. Pretty much every INFJ I know has this peaceful look to an extent. I think that's a part of why INFJs are stereotyped as otherworldly and sage-like.
I am also a infj. I noticed all my life when i first meet people they look at me like i am a magical being...like they look at me and they look at me like they're in "awe" i guess...i always thought it was because i was weird i felt insecure about it i thought i was nothing special but when i told my mother about my incounters with people and how they act she told me its because i am unique (i say humbly im not full of myself at) and i am
Also INFJ e9 🙌 I've often been told I remind people of a mermaid, angel, elf (Tolkein), or fairy, lol. I never realized it might have a lot to do with my MBTI.
I think having a more muted colouring definitely lends itself to appearing ethereal as well. Looking sort of "faded", it gives the impression that someone isn't fully present on this plane, maybe? I think that a lot of the photos you picked out were quite washed out or blue or grey-toned, which adds to the muted look of the ladies, so they seem more ethereal than we usually consider them. Pale, watery eyes is a trait I really associate with ethereal essence, like Frances Conroy, who I think of as quintessentially ethereal. (In fact, there's a cat in my neighbourhood who I consider quite ethereal - he's white with very muted ginger patches and very pale green eyes... I call him Frances Conroy!) I also think it's not a good idea to try to "force" appearing ethereal especially if you don't have a low contrast colouring, since lighting can make you seem greyed or blued-out in photos, but in real life you can't count on that! Nice work, thanks Merriam :)
Completely agreed about the muted coloring. Also this is why I stress so much always dressing in your own lines first and foremost, and then you don't have to worry about anything looking forced or not right. Otherwise, it can get 'risky' so to speak if you miss the mark for whatever reason. So cute about the cat!
There was a cat in my old neighborhood that looked like Judi Dench. I'm high contrast, but I plan to walk around at all times with a washed out Photoshop filter and a fan blowing on my like Beyonce, looking peaceful despite the air blasting into my eyes. Then I'm set.
@@cianap.281 Maybe a smoky look, and maybe wispy clothes similar to how Stevie Nicks prefers to look on stage would work for a high contrast person? On the other hand, there is the Kibbe type issue.
@@peaceonearth8693 That could work! I've honestly never tried for an "ethereal" look in reality, it's just not how I feel about myself. Although people used to say I looked "like Mona Lisa" when I was younger, I think because my lazy reserve, long center-parted hair and marshmallowy shape conveyed that peaceful Renaissance balance and could be an "ethereal" tactic for a high contrast person.
I find dark brown eyes to be very ethereal, maybe because of the resemblance to old photos with minimal detail. Brown eyes with pale or prominent eyelids, especially.
@@lauras.1513 The most famous examples I can think of are Lisa Bonet and Emmy Rossum. Also Camille Yolaine, Francesca Haywood, Alina Cojocaru. Winona Ryder would be a perfect example if she lightened her eyebrows. (I’ve put entirely too much thought into this!)
INFP here but I have been told I look like a fairy, fairytale princess, angelic, or like a sort of delicate doll, since I'm really petite with pale coloring, and I do tend to daydream and have a "distant dreamy" look. :0 I highly identify with Romantic Ingenue Ethereal as well. ^^
I think that Corinne Bailey Rae looks ethereal. I would love to see her kibbe type because she has such an interesting style. She has that type of style that you see HER first and her clothes second, despite the fact that she often wears busy prints, sparkles and a lot of stuff. However, that stuff never overpowers her. She just looks classy and peaceful. If I were to wear the dress that she wore in her video "Paris nights and New York mornings " I would look weird, she just looks classy in feathers with sparkle.
From what you've described here, she sounds like some sort of gamine, with natural ethereal essence (I'd say the wispy, untamed curls and somewhat low contrast colouring might add to that)
I just learned about essences after having known of the kibbe types for a while. I classify as Romantic, and I’ve definitely noticed that this works for me, I realized structured clothing just doesn’t work for me. but I’m not as curvy as the type suggests, my lines are very soft but somewhat elongated and sturdy. Having learned of this essence I’m resonating completely. My personal style and personality completely fit this, even my name lol. And yes, I’m also an INFJ. Makeup doesn’t work for me at all unless it’s a n extremely natural look. except for one time I dressed as ziggy stardust for a Halloween costume. I’m going to be completely leaning into the “wood nymph” sub type
I accidentally found the etherial style. For me it was the combination of a light, shimmery and soft rose make up, platinum blonde hair, and a light pastel purple pullover. Everything looked very soft and light. I enjoy this style so much.
I'm INTP and definitely an 'ethereal.' I'm more confident about that than I am on my body type. Hundreds of different, unconnected people have called me ethereal before so I don't think it's me being biased because I love ethereal essence. I also have quite elven features which contributes, extremely pale skin and very light blue/grey eyes. But now I think about it a lot of it probably comes down to my mannerisms. People say i'm very still and 'poised' and i'm a daydreamer so i'm often stating off into the distance. I've always envied lively, expressive people because they seem to have a much easier time making friends. But this is just the way I come across. I'm happy to embrace it and try to play it up.
@@yizhuo_pnions the commenter was simply finding a link between body type and personality type and expressing her thoughts, in my opinion i dont see why you should criticise it
I'm an INFJ!!! But I don't know if I come off peaceful. Anyway great video, wonderful insights. I would describe Ethereal as Stillness, maybe appearing to have depth of mind and soul.
I think being an INFJ-A (assertive) could come off as peaceful. Not so much for Turbulents though. ( I am a INFJ-T and also a FG, who are sometimes described as "aggressive").
LOVE that you took the time to talk about this subject! You really have an eye for these things and explain them so well, thanks and keep up the great work! :)
I guess now I understand the ethereal essence way better, thank you very much :D I was born with white hair, white lashes and white eyebrows, insanely light skin and huge deep blue eyes. And when I look at old photos of myself I always think something like 'I did look like I was not from this world', I still have that appearance when I wear no makeup because my lashes and eyebrows are pretty sparse and appear almost seethrough. I guess that's why I can still wear really light hair colors without looking too far off my coloring (even though my natural hair color now is more of a dark blonde). Whenever I don't wear makeup, people are confused about how different I look. I like that kind of 'seethrough' look tbh, but I like wearing makeup and can't fully stay away from it.
This is on point. I have been struggling with my wardrobe every since being “diagnosed” as a flamgam. Today I felt beautiful with a sheer beige hi low top with a black razor back tank underneath that was tucked into some black high water slacks . I am really having a hard time trying to find my aesthetic but today was a good day. Now that I watched this video, I think it is because I enjoy looking ethereal or looking otherworldly. You are my fashion therapist, I swear!
yes, you can totally incorporate some ethereal vibes! Especially like Nina did with an oversized blouse that's stiff, and then a corset over it (depends on the occasion I guess the wearability of that look, but you'd be surprised truly how much you could pull off as FG). The mixture of yin and yang from item to item. A stiff skirt with a really flowy top--this could easily look great on FG!
Wow very interesting! I would never consider myself to be ethereal but many people tell me that I have a peaceful stare and smile and I am INFJ 😂 I think may be because I am always on the clouds. Also I find very interesting that you mentioning how ethereal essence can take the edge of not wearing your lines, that explains why some natural lines looked fine on me and people use to compliment me on my hair that looks more for a natural even though I am a classic! Wow! Mystery solved, you’re a genius!
@@mermaidcattt Saaaame... People who know me, know I am typically calm and daydreaming, but I tend to look like I am I thinking very seriously about something stupid. IDK what essence that is.
This idea of essences doesn't seem very measurable and is confusing and vague to me. I don't know how to use it or recognize it really. Is that what we're exploring? How to define what translates as a style or look? And how to say I want to be perceived this or that way and this is how I can acheive it? But some styles or essences are built into peoples physicality? This is so confusing to me. Can we decide what seems to translate into each look and make a chart or something? Lol :)
Just wait until Merriam decides to explain the differences in perfume, lol. There's an enigma. About your first sentence. What if you try to imagine the vibe that people and things give off. I think a kind of French iron balcony railing and a mushroom give off different vibes. So, maybe it all boils down to what is the vibe you want to feel and send out to the world? Just add a touch of that quality to your personality. This is my guess on your question. I don't think this is really a measurable topic, this topic lives in the subliminal look/communication and in the feelings it makes in you and that then radiate out into others. Related: All the best liars actually in that moment accept an alternate mode where they believe their own lies. Hope that's not too much information..
Essence is so tough because I have zero idea how I "read" to other people. Body typing is easier because I have objectively shorter bones than So & So. Also, is "comedic essence" a thing? Because some faces are just... witty and funny, even in repose.
I'm unbelievably happy that someone else noticed this! From my somewhat obsessive analysis, I've decided that these "funny faces" can be described as "expressive". But, there is more to it. They are "exaggeratedly expressive". Of course people we refer to as "rubber faces" would seem to have funny faces because they are so exaggeratedly expressive when in motion. But what makes them seem so, even at rest? Faces are essential for communication in any genre, but they are absolutely crucial in comedy. Just think of "I Love Lucy" without Lucille Ball's iconic facial expressions. Think of why clowns paint their faces to exaggerate the mouth and eyes. Part of the comedy of children's cartoons-anime especially-is the facial expressions, for goodness sake. Comedy needs facial features that really communicate emotions. I think an openness of the face is what is behind this exaggerated expressiveness. I don't really know how to describe "openness" other than by saying the entire face is taken up by the facial features. This is not necessarily to do with the size of the features themselves, but with the spacing of the features. There's more to it than that because not everyone with an open face reads as funny. This comment is long enough as it is though. TL;DR: Yes, there is such a thing as "comedic essence" and you are a genius for thinking of the name.
@@unneighborlyarcades6356 I really enjoyed your reply! Rubber faces, yes, like Bill Hader; or even just that open expressiveness like Elaine from Seinfeld. Though of course I can think of a few comedians who don't have that but still have their moments; Will Ferrell, Carrie Brownstein. There's also some element of "sharp wit" to the face, and if I really think about it, it's a lack of eagerness to please, weird as that is. Some element that conveys... like a low-key pervasive disgruntlement. It's kind of messed up that that reads as "smarter" to me than a more eager, accepting countenance. Like April Ludgate from Parks & Recreation versus Jess from New Girl (even though I find Zooey D.'s comedy smarter overall). Or Jordan Peele versus Keegan-Michael Key. Both funny, but Jordan Peele has "that face" while Key exaggerates his actions.
@@cianap.281 I'm not particularly a fan of Will Ferrell's films (not my cup of tea), but he certainly reads as funny, in my opinion. I think I would have a hard time believing him as the lead in a serious drama, but I wonder if that is more to do with his voice and my own associations with him as a comedic actor. I wonder if it is also to do with the expression your face is in at rest? Some people have "resting bitch face", some have "resting sad face", and so on. Will Ferrell is a good example of a person with an "open" face, despite having quite small eyes and narrow lips. Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Bill Hader are such good examples! I agree with you completely on the "sharp wit" face. I call that the "straight-man face". I think Harvey Korman is a great example as well. And again, we can see this "sharp wit" face in cartoons. I love using cartoons as an example because faces are drawn deliberately to give the viewer an idea of the character's attitude. I'm so glad someone else is interested in this topic!
@@unneighborlyarcades6356 I had to look up Harvey Korman but I agree! I draw, and I've slowly begun to realize just how much cartooning goes into "serious" classical portraiture. I've always had a huge respect for cartooning; done well it's kind of mind-blowing.
@@cianap.281 Harvey Korman is one of my idols, so I always assume everyone knows who he is. I think we all assume everyone is familiar with our favorite things. Could you elaborate on what aspects of cartooning go into "serious classical portriature"? I don't like to assume I know what a person means and I think it will be very interesting.
Could you talk more about Ingenues? In how to incorporate this essence in the style? I have a lots of Ingenue in me (21 seems 12)... I used to look off in soft natural lines, sensual vibe is not for me but the Ingenue style looks just about right. I would love to see some exemples on how to apply in everyday looks. Thanks! love your videos 🙂
@Cersei Lannister I love plaid pants! Tomboy style looks way better than the "womanly" soft natural but also feels like something is missing ... the whole Ingenue frills and puff sleeves just seems more accurate on me. I look younger but fits better 🤷🏻♀️
You might want to check out Andrea Pflaumer’s ebook Shopping for the Real You. Besides the PSC body type test ( which has youthful or ingenue and ethereal), she also had style tips on dressing for ingenues. Crisp fabrics work. John Kitchener has a Youthful aka Ingenue essence vid on youtube which helps. :)
I definitely believe some “ethereal” qualities are dependent on personality. For me, a person comes across as “ethereal” when they posses an effortlessly airy form of strongly feminine poise. It’s different from the more structurally refined, and almost institutional poise of a well-developed classic beauty. Classically feminine poise almost looks developed, garnered, and mastered. It’s from the outside, reflected inwardly. Ethereal poise, on the other hand, looks like it esoterically radiates outward from within one’s core of being. They both give off an air of feminine intelligence . One is a more structured, erudite, and overtly diplomatic form of personal elegance. The other is a boundless, fruitfully resonant, and arcanely diplomatic form of elegance.
If any MBTI type would be ethereal essence I think it would be INFP. INFJs are actually known for their direct, intense deep stares (check out Erik Thor’s videos where he does a lot of great analysis on MBTI types and facial expressions), whereas INFPs trademark look is a vague, off-focus, off in distance look. (the difference between J and P eyes)
I'm INFJ and people have always told me I look or seem peaceful even though I usually feel the opposite inside! (Whether it's in a negative way like anxious or a positive way like passionate.) So maybe there is something to it? I definitely don't have ethereal essence, but maybe some of it is about body language and facial expressions. P.S. I love that you reference Justine's video; she's one of my other favorite style UA-camrs and I loved that video.
So amazing to hear your analysis! I am ENFJ, theatrical romantic with ethereal/ angelic essence. I love dramatic clothes but they look ridiculous on me. Luckily I love romantic clothes too. I get many compliments when I do dress/ carry myself in a more romantic, angelic way, sometimes i struggle with showing my quirky, energetic personality this way. I can pull of some gamine clothes. Would love to hear your opinion on your persin personality vs style personality and how to combine them
@@aphr0d Maybe there is some connection? Perfume land has it's qualities too. Like how sweet, vs. a bunch of other stuff. I bet for the romantic body type, there are perfumes which are better than others. Etc.
Maybe... if you're wearing a floral print wear floral perfume? Interesting idea. I think perfume goes with style and personality rather than body type though?
I would say Melanie in Gone With The Wind was very ethereal whereas Scarlet had the essence of a troublemaker. You can clearly see the difference in essence in those two characters/actresses.
Merriam you look so beautiful here! I really admire how you can see and work with lines and colors. Do you perhaps have any videos/other channel on MBTI?
I think Keira would have looked more ethereal in the blue outfit if her hair had been styled in soft waves instead of straight and almost plastered against her head, and if her expression were softer too. (She looked angry.)
Oh my goodness, I've been wondering this since your last video! Interesting about the peaceful look. I always wanted to go "ethereal" for my wedding (a couple years from now), but I'll be too busy laughing and crying, haha! I don't have a peaceful personality...
How appropriate that Im both into Kibbe and Mbti.. as it is my Infp face and eyes are too penetrating and intense for ethereal. Oh well, knowing my body type has helped immensely!
I'm INFP...apparently:) but I don't think I'm ethereal when just going through life. then I see photos and there is something going on...in the eyes, perhaps. it's odd. I have no idea of my body type. some sort of classic natural gamine!
I think, but am not sure I am somewhat of a dramatic ethereal...which sounds at odds...but I read once that this was described as 'otherworldly art curator' and that just fits lol. I also read it described once as just Persephone. Dark and deep colors, sometimes high contrast between skin and hair...less of an angelic presence and possibly more of a priestess or witchy vibe. I'd also say that is ethereal. To me ethereal is otherworldly....and that other world can be lots of places. Another thing I've noticed about people who are described as having an ethereal quality (Vera Farmiga also comes to mind) is that you can't place their face and body in a time period. Lots of people look like they're from the 50's! or the 70's! or the romantic era! But ethereal people often have a sort of timeless almost moving through time immortal look to them. They'd look as natural in Roman garb as they would dressed for 1975.
INFJ and a classic body type. I don't think I look ethereal at all, despite a peaceful demeanor and those around me saying they feel at ease and calm around me. I don't think it's completely about personality (although it definitely plays a part) but about taping into and fullfilling unconscious mythology and archetype. Most have ideas of what reads as angelic and otherworldly, elven or whatever. That is built around the cultural idea of what those types look like based on a historical image. You can only go so far with your style. It may look natural to you or not based on your body, face, personality, style, and lines. Thinner limbs, longer necks, smaller heads, sharp chins, wide almond eyes, delicate features, soft and flowing hair, low contrast (sometimes) tend to read as more ethereal. How you move, as well. Not always all of those qualities together but enough of those elements. I can play with that style but it doesn't really look like me even in my lines. And I have studied many pictures of myself to see this. I do better with a boyish, tailored look, no matter my expression or personality.
Im a cancer (typical softie 😆), INTJ type. Everyone told me that I have doll-like/baby face facial features, calm face and with pale skin, light grey eyes and black hair I look so pure and rare. Ive never knew what the hell it means but now I know that I have ethereal type of beauty I guess :D
I'm an INFP and I am often lost in thought. I'm reserved and observational. I think these things make me seem mysterious. I am weird, but I'm also pretty...which I think creates an ethereal vibe 😁
I think the only thing that made these images ethereal is the lighting and styling and some of them still weren't, like the photo of Beyonce. There are people who look ethereal everyday like you said earlier it's an essence so to really achieve it it has to be who you are inside.
speaking of ethereal essences, a family friend told me that I look like a kitsune (she watches teen wolf) XD idk how i googled it though. I personally don't think i have an essence at all
I think I have a soft ethereal essence that only comes out when I lose weight. But I also have an ingenue essence that really becomes prominent when I gain weight 🤔
Interesting, other commenters have also made the case that these essences seem to be on a spectrum that we pass as we age and lose our youthfulness. I wonder about Merriam's thoughts on this?
I think ingenue to ethereal is spectrum, and very few women are ingenue looking from their teens to their 50s or older, and very few women are ethereal looking from the age of 13-14 or even 9-10. however most women if you compare a picture/video of her at 14-15 to when shes 35 or 45( provided she aged really gracefully, really well maintained and dresses flattering herself at that age), the young version will seem very ingenue next to the older version and the older version will seem very ethereal compared to the younger person. Bcoz as we get older our faces lose baby fat so they get get thinner (which makes them seem longer, less cute) , flatter (less juicy, full cheekbones) and our faces grow a little after our teens so the change in proportion makes our eyes smaller. everyone starts out extremely neotenous (baby's, 5 yr olds) and moves toward the ethereal end of the spectrum , especially once they reach old age (if they look beautiful for their age) they look extremely ethereal. My mind is also making the connection of being full of passion and restlessness when your your younger and becoming more calm and peaceful as you get older (of course their are exceptions like Helena Bonham Carter who even at 53 looks very ingenue). I think we all should enjoy the ingenue look in our teens and 20s (however long it lasts for each person) and prepare to carry the ethereal look someday (most likely).

Hello Merriam! Do you have some insight about aging and kibbe types? I'm soft gamine, but I feel like the older I get, the more I loose my essence (mostly because of aging skin) and because gamines are supposed to look young and dynamic, aging becomes an "obstacle" to me, and wearing clothes of my type makes me feel like I'm trying too much to look younger. It's like there is too much contrast between my body and my style. Do you have any solutions regarding this issue? Does aging actually influence our Kibbe type? Thank you so much for your amazing content
I'm not an expert but if you lose some softness or fleshiness from the face with age as most (everyone?) do maybe the regular Gamine clothes and even a hint of FG sharpness would suit you better?
@@user-qp6lj6gu7s Yes that's one of the issues, i'm loosing the fleshiness of my face and hands. Going for a more regular gamine style sounds like a very good idea! It will match the sharpness I get from getting older. But I'll have to find a balance because I still have very fleshy upper arms and hips. Being gamine is a challenge because of this mix of opposites :) Thanks a lot for your great advice!
@@k.s2802 Interesting. I'm a soft classic and feel like the older I get the more I have to dress real soft classic to look my best. Like aging doesn't forgive style caprioles.
I too would love to see content on dressing your Kibbe type over 50/60 etc. I'm 56 and still trying to pin down my exact type although most people guess me 10 years younger. I've looked at all the soft as the only yang I see is my long spidery hand and can't decide about my jawline or shoulders. Next to my athletic daughter who has powerful shoulders, fairly narrow hips and only slight waist compared to when I was her size I'm all rounded. I've gained a couple of sizes because of health but Romantic lines seem to fit best as I still have all curves with my waist definition while most my friends have lost theirs. It's not just typing though. Like commenter above it's how to translate things to an older body.
@@Flippinger I think it depends on your type and where you gain flesh or lose it. If your face is primarily Classic and doesn't change too much but you gain some additional softness on your body that could explain it for you. If you are a Gamine or Natural you might instead lose some softness on your face but you keep your mixed or blunt bones making you closer to the flamboyant or neutral version of that type. I think this is why Cameron Diaz is mistyped because she keeps her body fat at such a low level that she looks more Flamboyant (dramatic).
Yes. Any Kibbe type can have an ethereal essence. Ethereal gamine and ethereal ingenue tend to have a sweet, angelic look, or could be impish, mischievous. Ethereal Dramatic would be majestic like Cate Blanchett or Tilda Swinton. There's more than one ethereal look; don't let anyone tell you differently. Even angels have different roles - they can be governors, or guardians, or cherubic, etc. and each role has different characteristics. For example, an angelic ingenue might look good in a white lace babydoll dress, but it would be all wrong on Tilda Swinton! The ethereal essence can also be elvish or alien, which lends many more possible aspects to the ethereal essence.
Interesting that so many say they are INFP here in the comments, as an INTP I don't really like this system because it's not consistent enough for me: Cate going from looking quintessentially Etheral to normal and "just beautiful" is a good example of that. Too much Fi or Ni-Fi for my Ti as a system for people but I can fully accept it as a art- or photography style.
If you want to firm up the system, try relating these essences to archetypes that are revealed in all forms of past literature and mythology. Try to find the muse, character and qualities that fit with with this essence system. Narrow that cast of characters down to the most promising, then these will be types. Is my theory.
Lol I've got that Ni-Fi as an INTJ. M, you might like my other video on ethereal typology where I talk about some actual archetypes/categories as C.C. is describing. But this video to some extent was purposeful in its vagueness. I think a lot of thought in the community tries to make ethereal more physical and measurable than it ever can be. I think this subjectivity can be fun, so long as we realize it's subjectivity and not objectivity!
@@merriamstyle Haha yes I remember you mentioning that before in the comments to another video :) I have seen the other videos (I watch all of your videos!), I like the examples used but I think this video is better for me personally when it comes to clarifying what it actually is about. A system that doesn't work all the time is automatically rejected by my Ti (seasons for example) so having an explanation as to why it doesn't work every time allows me to accept it somewhat, even if it means seeing it as a art/clothing/photography-style where some people have an easier time looking a certain way or giving off a certain vibe under the right conditions.
@@user-qp6lj6gu7s I can understand where you are coming from. I am an INFJ and don't understand the vagueness often used like here, but understand Ethereal/Angelic as much as any other term like "Gamine," "Romantic," so on, and use of body lines and face, so on. Just not so much with Kibbe, I guess. Or too much subjectivity.
Are ingenue and ethereal the only two essences? I am not really understanding the idea of essences. It seems more unmeasurable and imprecise than I’m comfortable with.
Any Kibbe type can have an ethereal essence. It simply means that there is a supernatural or otherworldly vibe about the person. It can be angelic (which can be majestic and noble like Cate Blanchett or sweet and innocent); it can be alien (like a young Kirstie Alley); or elvish or impish and mischievous.
This is my own take: I do agree that ethereal is a style type, and that it is an essence, I do not agree that the ethereal essence and style type are the same thing and i do believe ethereal is also a body type. Romantic for example is a body type, an essence, and a style type ALL SEPARATELY. Someone can have an ethereal shape to their face or body but not carry much of an ethereal air (or essence) to them. The same person can then use ethereal style with their ethereal lines to add the ethereal essence to their being. Essence, Body/face shape, and style are all separate things and everyone has a mix of them, some peoples mixes are more complex and others are more minimal based on their personal equation.
I also feel that ethereal is the other way you can sway on the spectrum right above (rather than next to) dramatic. It has that angularity, the power in presence, but it is not a necessarily HARSH feeling. Like seeing a knight guarding somewhere but not being in covertly hostile or aggressive. Dramatics have an almost aggressive, a sharp, a harshness to their verticality and lines; ethereals give more an air of higher intelligence, power through non physical means, its not a presence that's so *OUT IN YOUR FACE* like dramatics normally are.
I guess one way of saying it is that the essences is that they appear as if they are a guardian of some kind. Naturals are very approachable and huggable meanwhile ethereals are almost loving, the appear like smart, intelligent, caring, and things along those lines. Not so much lush and sensual like the romantic or relaxed like the natural.
Are we talking about Kitchener essences? He has very specific physical traits on his list of the ethereal type, including body. But I still see that Kibbe's lines should be used as the base, and that there is a reason difference between style and Kitchener essence.
The “peaceful look” seems to me to be a steady gaze without a hard edge to it. No aggression, no ‘come hither’. A softened, steady gaze; possibly more into the distance than on the immediate surroundings.
And good lighting in the photo 🤣
To me (since i have this look without even trying, allegedly according to friends) it’s actually caused by being with your head on the clouds or looking through someone’s else soul.
Wonderful comment 👏🏿
Nicely put... There could be a tinge of sadness in the gaze too... Sad faraway eyes... Or dreamy faraway eyes...
Yes this is so me. I also have a Pisces midheaven and lots of Neptune contacts in my chart so the way I look can seem staring through another person 😆
I’m amazed at how many of us INFJs are here in the comment section!
ISTP female here .......
@@ChantelStays Me too definitly INFJ :D
The right stylist, expression, outfit, hair, makeup, lighting and photographer...can make most women look ethereal.
yes, because it's a look! if someone knows what they're doing, they can probably look quite ethereal if they wanted to!
True.
Emily G. i’m an intj but i guess i have the infj stare instead of the intj stare 😂
yay me too! infj type 9!!
Check out Robert Plutchik's Wheel of Emotions from wikipedia. I think you can find an emotion (or look) for every-Dom from it :) Also an INFJ
Comparing A. J. in Maleficent to C. B.'s Galadriel in Lord of the Rings, says a lot towards supporting your point.
Tilda swinton is my absolute definition of ethereal
I find dark brown eyes to be very ethereal, maybe because of the resemblance to old photos with minimal detail. Brown eyes with pale or prominent eyelids, especially.
Do you have a celeb example?
@@lauras.1513 The most famous examples I can think of are Lisa Bonet and Emmy Rossum. Also Camille Yolaine, Francesca Haywood, Alina Cojocaru. Winona Ryder would be a perfect example if she lightened her eyebrows. (I’ve put entirely too much thought into this!)
@@sarahakin oh interesting! Thank you! I totally see it
INFP here but I have been told I look like a fairy, fairytale princess, angelic, or like a sort of delicate doll, since I'm really petite with pale coloring, and I do tend to daydream and have a "distant dreamy" look.
From what you've described here, she sounds like some sort of gamine, with natural ethereal essence (I'd say the wispy, untamed curls and somewhat low contrast colouring might add to that)
Your eye for style never ceases to amaze. Will use this video as reference for a future roleplay
You look quite ethereal in this video as well!
what would you call the essence of one with resting look of death face
I enjoy this style so much.
little joke: I accidentally found it when I was just about to zone out at work.
The lost Fanning sister :)
I'm also an INTP and have a blend of dramatic/ ethereal :)
what does mbti/jung typology have anything to do with it
much less INTP, introverted thinking has nothing to do with this at all lmao

Is there a list of other typologies/essences by Merriam?
I'm an INFJ!!! But I don't know if I come off peaceful. Anyway great video, wonderful insights. I would describe Ethereal as Stillness, maybe appearing to have depth of mind and soul.
I think being an INFJ-A (assertive) could come off as peaceful. Not so much for Turbulents though. ( I am a INFJ-T and also a FG, who are sometimes described as "aggressive").
LOVE that you took the time to talk about this subject! You really have an eye for these things and explain them so well, thanks and keep up the great work! :)
I get strong ethereal vibes from Amanda Seyfried and seulgi from red velvet. Idk what their kibbe types are though
Seulgi looks like a cat to me lmao
INTP
yes, you can totally incorporate some ethereal vibes!
Hihi, love your verbiage; flamgam is my new word!
Just so you know I deeply appreciate any video you make about ethereal beauty!
I can manage to look peaceful for about 90 seconds at a time before all my manic gamine/hearty natural vibes take over.
That peaceful facial expression is my signature expression.
I wish I had an peaceful facial expression.. But I was gifted with a resting b*tch face instead 😩

@@kathryn169 🤣 I feel this
This idea of essences doesn't seem very measurable and is confusing and vague to me.
She is the confusing one. Maybe, you should do your own research and create your own opinion.
It is an art more than science but it is still valid.
I think the singer Aurora has ethereal essence
Very interesting... unique, innovative approach to style... Great Merriam!
Well said
If any MBTI type would be ethereal essence I think it would be INFP.

I think Keira would have looked more ethereal in the blue outfit if her hair had been styled in soft waves instead of straight and almost plastered against her head, and if her expression were softer too. (She looked angry.)
I know that it's really not Kierra's style in the fluffy but I love, love , love that outfit!
Thank you!! only NOW I get that key to anderstand that vibe!)))

I think the only thing that made these images ethereal is the lighting and styling and some of them still weren't, like the photo of Beyonce. There are people who look ethereal everyday like you said earlier it's an essence so to really achieve it it has to be who you are inside.

Just wanted to say that you look ethereal without makeup. With makeup the ethereal look gets lost
Interesting, other commenters have also made the case that these essences seem to be on a spectrum that we pass as we age and lose our youthfulness. I wonder about Merriam's thoughts on this?
I liked this video the most
I think ingenue to ethereal is spectrum, and very few women are ingenue looking from their teens to their 50s or older, and very few women are ethereal looking from the age of 13-14 or even 9-10. however most women if you compare a picture/video of her at 14-15 to when shes 35 or 45( provided she aged really gracefully, really well maintained and dresses flattering herself at that age), the young version will seem very ingenue next to the older version and the older version will seem very ethereal compared to the younger person.
Some examples of how most of us will look much closer to the ethereal end of spectrum in old age (if we look good for our age).

the last 2 don't count so much, but for the first 4 compare them to when they were younger. You can see the shift from engenue to ethereal.
Even Cindy Borella
That flamboyant gamine looks slightly ethereal to me!
I think Sophie Turner is ethereal
I'm an infp and I have been told I have a fae like essence. Not ethereal, but elven.
INFJ here professionally typed as an FN with ethereal & natural essence.
I think maybe assertive INFJs can be ethereal. For one, I am turbulent and aren't :)
Where is the sexy for FGs video? I can't find it for some reason. Could anyone help?
Genius video
I've been told I'm "fae" like and I have to wonder if its ethereal essence!
I don’t understand how to find my kibbe type. If anyone would like to help me that would be great!!!
Nichelle LC go watch Aly Art’s video!
Colette Shaneyfelt I did I got it. I’m a theatrical romantic ❤️
Nichelle LC I am also a theatrical romantic but I am sometimes unsure if I am that or a soft classic. I’m so glad you figured yours out ❤️
People always told me I look cute or that I look like a Nymph I dont know why😱
Nice video! 💖

Can you do Lady Gaga Kibbe body type?
What is the personality test you mentioned? I didn’t catch the name
Love this video and topic by the way!
Myers Briggs.
Can easily be done at 16personalities.com
Can you have an ingenue and ethereal essesnce at the same time? Maybe like a cute elf or something.
Audrey Hepburn is an awesome example as ethereal.
Tori Amos comes to mind!
@@peaceonearth8693 Do you have any examples?
Lol I've got that Ni-Fi as an INTJ. M, you might like my other video on ethereal typology where I talk about some actual archetypes/categories as C.C. is describing. But this video to some extent was purposeful in its vagueness. I think a lot of thought in the community tries to make ethereal more physical and measurable than it ever can be. I think this subjectivity can be fun, so long as we realize it's subjectivity and not objectivity!
@@merriamstyle Haha yes I remember you mentioning that before in the comments to another video :)
I have seen the other videos (I watch all of your videos!), I like the examples used but I think this video is better for me personally when it comes to clarifying what it actually is about.
Just out of total nosiness, I am curious, what's your own body type? I really enjoy the videos, thank you for bringing those explanation to us :)
She mentions she is soft gamine in other videos, but I don't remember which.
@@KYLE0P to me she looks more like a flamboyant gamine or just regular gamine but idk
I’m most likely an ENFP. Interesting how many INFP’s are in the comments
LolaLivesHere infp 🙋🏻♀️
I can't find the video about how to be sexy as a FG... :(
Intp + soft classic
INFP would probably be more ethereal than INFJ..
What mbti type are you? I’m a enfp
Thank you for this interesting video
Merriam has stated that she is INTJ. It might be in these comments somewhere. :)
Severian oh thank you so much
Are ingenue and ethereal the only two essences? I am not really understanding the idea of essences. It seems more unmeasurable and imprecise than I’m comfortable with.
Also, wouldn’t body type affect how you would achieve ethereal essence? Different clothes give different impressions on different bodies
Lana del Ray
But I still see that Kibbe's lines should be used as the base, and that there is a reason difference between style and Kitchener essence.
off topic but you're one of those people who is in the "indefinite age category". you could be anywhere between 20-30.
