I was told by one of the players that the 1979 Cotton Bowl was the coldest game he ever played in. I was suppose to go to that game but weather prevented us from going. We even lost our electricity at home so no television.
His 1st comeback was actually from a zip-7 halftime deficit v. Northwestern in 1975. He replaced Rick Slager and led a 31-7 victory two weeks before the North Carolina game.
Devine was hated by the players. They were allowed to vote in1975 whether they wanted to go to the Cotton Bowl or not. Only a handful of players voted yes. Devine said that letting the players vote was the biggest mistake he ever made. I know this because my husband was on the team
You must be Mrs. Mike Carney. I remember the Devine era very well; those were my college years (I'm a UConn alum with family ties to ND). Devine had the unenviable task of following a legend. He was unfairly put under a microscope. That bowl rejection in '75 wasn't the first time that had happened. Ara's 1971 squad voted against going to the Gator Bowl.
Ole Miss 20 Notre Dame 13 in September 1977! Of course, let's glorify ND! I don't care, but they were not perfect! Joe said that he was not there. Others say he was on the sidelines. Who cares? That was a legitimate ass whipping in the worst heat and humidity imaginable!
This is awesome. The legend began before the 49ers.
You ll notice from this video that J Montana is very humble for a very accomplished player...
That Montana comeback game against USC was perhaps the most incredible game I'd ever seen. It was spectacular all the way.

Look on the bright side. He broke your heart once but he made up for it four times.
Go Joe !!
I remember in 1977 when Joe Montana helped Rudy win the National Championship!

why do u guys hate dan devine he was a great head coach
john barkley played for him, I thought he was a psychopath
Perhaps the coaches were trying to make up for prematurely voting Alabama No. 1 before they faced the Irish in the Sugar Bowl in the 1973 season.
30 below wind chill y'all are better than me I couldn't of played in that weather
I never understood why Dan Devine Was so dismissive of Montana only in the end to praise him
japan?
why wasn't notre dame undefeated?
Devine kept going for it on fourth down against Missouri instead of kicking field goals. Then they made too many mistakes against Michigan.
The team carrying Rudy off the field was a joke literally. Montana even said so during his six part documentary on Peacock
