Use 2x1x2 wedge blocks with the flat side to the hover block and hinge angle of 33.3 degrees. I've been over 5.5k MPH with just 4 hover-blocks.

Since you are no-drag glitching, you can't rely on drag to slow you down, which is why you kept sliding over the edge while trying to land.

You could make it even faster if you used pistons to make the crates break the sound barrier. But I guess the mechanism is a little large
