Tales of the Unexpected ‘The Dead Don’t Steal’ Glynis Barber Nicholas Ball

- This delightful gem of an episode transports us back in time to the great fun days of the 1980's where the year Y2K was merely a distant pipe dream.
I had just passed my driving test at 17 and owned a blue Triumph Herald convertible, pretending to be Sonny Crockett from Miami Vice. Complete with pink jacket and espadrills - In rural Essex! LOL.
Anywho, in this 'Tales of the Unexpected' episode, written by Ella Griffiths, sees the delectable Miss Glynis Barber playing an air hostess, Oh there is a lord....How pretty is she? Wow.
Filmed just after Dempsey and Makepeace suffered it's untimely and unfortunate end, one can certainly recognise certain characteristics of Sergeant Harriet Makepeace in this episode.
However, many new emotions, never seen on D&M, make a welcome appearance to showcase Miss Barber's multi talented acting abilities.
In real life, Glynis hasn't actually got a twin sister but a younger one called Angela.
I recorded this live on my parent's clunky black ITT VHS recorder back in 1988 and then 25 years later onto DVD when I 'embraced' the internet and YooToob.

I wasn't allowed to watch this series as a child ( rightly so) but I knew the opening music and was desperate to watch. ( I was about 10 years old)
I'm 48 now and am so excited to binge every episode.
Everything comes to she who waits.
Great to have you here Yvonne. Let me know your favourite episode!
Sounds like you had decent parents, Yvonne
- at the same time, it's a tad amusing that ToU was off-limits!
@@AnnabelleJARankin no really. Her parents were big fans of BOUQUET OF BARBED WIRE & they watched that on BBC instead
I was allowed and I'm now 50,however my mother wouldn't let me watch The Young One's,i wasn't pleased. 😘🙏🙋♂️ hello from Chesterfield Derbyshire.
I do believe as a child that they messed with our heads
Glynis has always been a stunner.
Yes. I remember her in Blake's 7. Very cool. She has a lovely voice too.

I agree.
I had a big crush on her when she was in Dempsey and Makepeace.
Yes absolutely true 👍
I enjoyed this. Glynis Barber is just beautiful.
The car is beautiful!
I expect it will be before she met her husband Michael Brandon who was also her partner on Dempsey and Makepeace.
Loved the theme song at the time. Still do.
Great! Haven't seen these for decades...I'm going to slip into my smoking jacket, pour myself a pint of sherry and watch the lot!
jealous at you but have fun.
The good ol’ days
A pint! Are you still alive? 😂
I prefer a pint of wine
I've watched this episode a hundred times. glynis Barber is a hot, beautiful actress. She really should have starred in some more episodes of this series.
Best one yet.
vastly underated, beautiful actress !
I'm 46 and have been watching Series 5 and 6 off the telly lately. I love it. Really brings back memories. The stories are sometimes a bit dodgy, but in a way that adds to the charm (because they feel like quick dives into social oddness) and they're so deliciously bite-sized at about 25 minutes each. In a weird way, it might have fuelled my interest in playing things like Dungeons and Dragons, where a simply structured 'high concept' idea and a devilish twist are most of the story :)
Same
the good old days of television
EVERYONE DRESSED PROPERLY. I MISSED THOSE TIMES TOO
I used to love watching this on a Saturday night when I was a kid. There was murder mystery and suspense then straight after tales of the unexpected.
I vaguely remember murder, mystery suspense. My mam used to watch it. Scary iirc. Was it a different episode each week?
@@S.Hitchcock yes it was. They sometimes had 2 part ones.
@@howey935 class. Been reading online there is no evidence of this programme only people's memories
Omg I remember murder, mystery suspense ! That was an American show. And funnily enough her husband ,Michael ,was in one of the murder mystery suspense episodes.
What a beautiful lass. Can’t imagine walking into the Durham Working Man’s Club with a bird like that.

Glynis Barber is a very beautiful actress.
What a great way to sting a murderer.
Thanks for sharing.
How did I miss this series growing up? Absolutely awesome.
Infidelity and cheating are the worst things that can happen to a person really. Ok cancer and death are worse obviously but being lied to and betrayed is bloody awful. My ex was a terrible liar and cheat - she couldn’t keep her knickers on! Haha. Did my head in. Best to find someone honest and loyal to avoid all the heartache.
your right
That sucks. I never been cheated on that I know but it must be awful. Some people who are bad liars have a tell don't they. And some people have a 6th sense almost for detecting lying. Were you one of those people? Who just knew when she was lying?
nothing worse than your ex cheating on you with your ex best mate
Been there brov

At age four I was terrified by Dr Who. In my late teens and early 20s I was terrified and confused in more subtle ways by Tales of the Unexpected. It is both scary and hilarious. Thank you for posting this one.
I hid behind the sofa when the darleks appeared. My much older sister loved Tales Of The Unexpected, the intro was creepy as
That theme tune takes me back to being a kid watching this with my grandparents happy days ❤️
When I was young I loved staying up late to watch this.
Its new to me.
Its like Colombo with a bit of twilight zone.
Can we not go back to the 60s and not create the pc world we have today. That would be a great episode of tales of the unexpected.
I don't think I saw this one at the time
- fantastic!
This was a good series! Used to watch it all the time when it came on TV.
Gone are the GOLDEN DAYS OF GREAT TV SHOWS ❤💙💚💛💜
Mr. Hume thank you for taking the time and effort to record this and upload them to the internet. The stories presented and everything else on this show is really amazing.
Ed Am My pleasure! 🤣 I love this series, particularly this episode with Miss Barber, which will always be a special one for me.
Loved glynis barber especially in Dempsey and makepeace..thankyou for sharing
I knew that name was familiar!! I saw the thumbnail and wondered if it was that girl from D&M... wow, must have been 35 years ago that I watched that show a few times - she is memorable!
I thought I’d seen every episode of tales of the unexpected back in the 80s, must have missed this one. Thanks for the upload 👍
Wow. The music of the start took me back about 30 years. All I had to do was close my eyes and I was instantly back in my grandparents lounge, or sitting room as they use to call it
Amazing
Sheldon Hauraki Ah! Excellent! 🎼🎼
Why do I still feel so scared watching these now as a 55 year old woman..... 👻

Yes I remember too - Glynis Barber was a very attractive lady too and this lead me to watching Dempsy and Makepeace. that's probably why they called the telly a gogglebox because i was goggling her Lol

One of the best episodes, I think! Thanks!!
Enjoyed this one. This type of show should be made now. Plot twists. Love them.
I loved watching this when I was younger.
Thanks for the upload; I used to love this series!
I was also a young lad (18 in 1980) and remember watching this series. The best part of this one might have been the E type Jag!
I keep remembering seeing this British series debut here in the US in 1978-79 on PBS - -?
I was born in 1944 so I was about 44 in 1980 the e type jag looked nice but the back end had a bad habbit of swinging round at speed when cornering.

Glynis Barber absolutely charming :-)
i adore the opening/closing music
i prefer the American version the carousel its eerie.
Ron Grainer produced the music. The dancer was called Karen Standley - She was the then girlfriend of the chap who made the titles. She went on to work for the NHS. Lesson over! Happy New Year!

Quoth 73 You’re ‘dead’ right.
Brings back so many memories of those dark and distant days of the 1980s. This was television at its best. Whatever has happened to ITV now? It is absolute crap compared to what it once was.
It really is....I barely watch TV yet get slammed for the licence fee.
Yes, you are so right. This is why I trawl UA-cam for this sort of thing
@Redblade I might well cancel it..they used to be so bullying and aggressive..
Any tips?
@Redblade The harassment and aggression was so serious...including court threats {I had a TV licence, but a B&W one}
At the time, my son was young, and watching a lot more TV as computers weren't a thing then...but in those days they jailed people for non payment of TV licence that was criminal.
They funded paedos like Savile, produce such crap nowadays...
The trouble is, the b*stards check to see if you have an aerial...and I do.
I think I will look into cancelling it...for something I hardly ever watch, it isn't worth it.
Mostly if I watch anything, it is on ''catch up'' and legally one doesn't have to pay a licence for ''non live streamed'; TV...
Thanks for the tip!
Before I caved in with threats of court and prison ''we know you have a colour TV''......
Seems when a colour TV is sold, they tell the TV licence b@stards.
@Redblade A friend kept her TV in a box...I thought it was because she didn't;t want her husband and kids to watch TV.,...but turns out it was because she didn't have a licence at all...
They do now.... because of harassment.
TV licence people are some of the most aggressive out there.... very nasty indeed.
The tales of the unexpected..best TV shows ever made beats watching love island!
Watching paint dry is better than love island 😂😂
I love these short stories/tales.
Short, crisp and loaded! Thanks a ton.
Your description was well written, thanks for taking the time to write it.
Jean-Luc Picard Thanks C’ptain!
There was an article in one of the Sunday supplements on 16/02/2020 about old TV shows and whether they stood the test of time. This was one of the shows featured and they basically slagged it off. I've just watched this to make my own judgment and, based on this story, it's still worth a watch. I'm sure there were some duff episodes but this certainly wasn't one of them.
I have to say I love retro TV but even with rose tinted specs, this series is poor. Generally the twist in tale is known approx 29 mins in advance and quite a lot of episodes are just unwatchable- almost every US based one definitely is. However, there is some compensation in that almost every major TV starlet in her prime appears in the series at some point. Small but important compensation!
Thanks for uploading this!
I love your description...the triumph, Miami vice, etc.. thank you for these. Love this show
Thank you 😀
Sorry it took me so long to see, Steve
This takes me back. 9pm on a Sunday I think, thanks for posting.

Miss Barber and v12 E type, doesn't get any better. Passed my driving test in 1988 had Escort 1600 sport wish i still had it.
Dave Judd Worth a kings ransom these days!
I passed in 1989 in a mini metro my own car I was 18 my daughter was potty training and I had left her potty in the boot whilst I took my test, I pulled into the test centre and my mum was waiting with her and she was signalling to me my daughter wanted the potty lol as soon as I was told I had passed I had to get out and get the potty out of the boot so that my daughter could go 😂 I passed in my own car
My first car was 1600 Sport too. Great motor 😎👍🏻
i loved the theme tune it was so hypnotic but the show was great and so was this episode .
and i think glynis filmed this before drempsey and makepeace .

@@hammersteve i meant Dahl. Glad I found you also. I'll be looking for more. Happy New Year!
Great short story. This reminds me of another story about a true-life murderer who returns the grave of his victim and digs the corpse up. At first, he reckons the body is too close, only 3 miles away from his house. He figures 15 miles out safer. After reburying the corpse though, he can't rest. Gets worried he chose the spot a bit hastily, so goes back to move it to 20 or so miles south instead. A more remote area. For some reason he becomes like a dog with a bone. He moves this corpse seven times. On the seventh grave digging he is finally caught and charged with the murder.
Paul and Ancila Woah! That sounds intense!
He should have been arrested for being so stupid.
Do you know the killers name?
So I can google story.
Jammyfish Nicholas Ball played the killer called Ken Johnson.
@@Ytnzy250 I don't know much about the case but read about it in Truman Capote's true murder novel In Cold Blood. Apparently the Sherriff/lead detective on that case had arrested that particular man in an earlier murder case. It's briefly mentioned in that novel so if you Google for the detectives name you might find it (Capote became quite friendly with the detective and his wife and invited them to New York in 1960s). The murder itself happened in Kansas, possibly in or near Garden City where the Sheriff/detective was based.
