- This is a video about the NYSW yard job WS-1, with CEFX SD40M-2 3124. WS-1 started its journey on 11/25/11 in the Ridgefield Park engine office. After recieving paperwork, the engineer fired its prime mover with tons of smoke. After idling for about five minutes, the train started its journey to the yard. After relocating, we will see the engine shunt cars in Notch 8. Enjoy the video!
The rumble of the 645 is what I think of when I think of how a diesel prime mover should sound. that low frequency thrum that you can feel in your chest.
I love those EMD sounds
So do i
Me too. 😄
WOW!!!! Not just any 645 - an ex Espee SD45!!!
Hey, model railroad sound decoder manufacturers - note the car alarm triggering THUNDER of the prime mover - NOT merely 8 different pitches of WHINING turbo and generator!!! :O
We WANT the "thunder" NOT the whine!!
EXCELLENT video!

SD45R*, the SD45 had a standard rear light, while the SD45R had a full real-light package(Emergency light, gyrating fog lights, and standard lights)
You can tell by looking at the back of the engine, right above the rear-light there is space for two other lights in a flat panel, that's where the other pieces of the light package used to be housed.
I love the sound of this puppy -
WDP4 was my favorite sounding locomotive until I heard the sound of that EMD!! Slight whining from the turbo and that low frequency rumble that you can feel sweeping through your chest. 4500 horses of brute strength!
This video is a good test for your sub woofer. Mine shakes the room in the first 2 minutes of the video. Thanks for the quality sound capture.
Makes ya feel like youre really on the train dont it
Awesome 👌 video. I just love that Era of EMD's , to me they'll always be what a diesel engine should look and sound like! Thanks 😊
Its amazing how this loco sound is beautiful and powerful you can actually feel the pulling & pushing power
What a beautiful sound. I'm sure that locomotive thinks it's a hot rod! Some of the fastest shunting I have seen. Excellent catch.
"we need another marker" Sounds like everyday in my yard 😂
5:34. Sets off car alarm. LOL
Excellent Sound Capture !
Listen to her roar! She's working with all she's got!
I was around 8 years old when Burlington had these running thru our part of the country. Came out of Kansas City heading north to Omaha. You'd see 3 coupled together pulling 80 cars or so and a Caboose of course. They would hit it across the Bottoms by Big Lake to "climb" into Nebraska, rolling coal and the sweet thunderous sound would shake the ground and your chest. There was a siding at Napier they would many times pull out from and you could see the black clouds when they were loaded and in a hurry. Now it's mostly coal trains, grain, and Ethanol moving thru. Several of the old whistle stops are still called out on the Black top from St. Joe to Rulo.
Its a pity all the modern ones are so muffled that you can't even hear the thump of the engine anymore.... better for those people living near rail lines I guess.
I grew up near an MKT line. about 1/4 mile away. And I really miss that low frequency rumble. It was a comforting sound and when we moved my sophmore year of high school and happened to be, yet another 1/4 mile away from a rail line, this time KCS it was again comforting and would help e get to sleep. Some of the locomotives have that low frequency EMD rumble but many don't.
Having been an engineer for some years, I miss the sound of the 645 prime mover. Yeah, I know I've got to be nuts...LOL
Is there any better sound in locomotive lore than 645 turbos in "RUN EIGHT"?
RHETORICAL QUESTION!
Those 645turbos are "BOMB PROOF"!
Great vid.
if only Athearn and all these other companys could get this sound to come out right, instead they all sound like an SD70ACE. the Leslie RS3L'S still dont sound like an Leslie RS3L !!
Back in the day, when those flared radiators meant that there was a 20-645 inside, that particular sound would give me the most intense eargasms ever.
3124 was built as an SD45. It would have started out with a 20-645, however, like a lot of the 45's the companies that owned them had them brought down with the installation of a 16-645, derating them about 600hp, saving reliability (even though that problem was moot by the end), saving idle fuel usage, and losing under-power fuel economy. Essentially they were fresher sd40 units after being converted.
Acá en Argentina el 645 se usa en las GM G22 y GT22, un súper clásico de mi país. Debe ser el motor más confiable de la historia.
I love those SD45 units! Thank you for this
Great video! Brings back a lot of memories. Ran 'em for over 20 years on the SP. At one point, the Company had over 400 of them in one form or another. Even after many had their governors re-set to 3200 hp and were re-numbered to the 7400-class those 20 cylinders still put out that deep low-cycle throb when under load that could be heard for miles. Definitely one of the loudest class of engines in their day. Over the years cost me 15% of my hearing but that's my fault for always liking the window on my side of the cab open.
I miss that sound of EMD's SD40-2's and SD45T-2. I used to live a few feet across from a locomotive bypass, where they would sort and park locomotives, back from 1998-2005, before Wide cab locomotives started taking over, when SW10, SW1200& MP1500AC's we're switching cars around, before they started using regular GP38-2's, GP40's, SD40-2's and SD45-2 for switching. Anyway, back then all you would see at the locomotive bypass was SD40-2's, SD45T-2, SD9, SD50&60, GP38-2, GP40, 50 & 60, High-Hoods, Cabless B-units, Switchers, Slugs, Alcos, and other rare locos. Those were the days.
I can listen to this song all day long.
That is the best 645 engine I've ever heard at notch 8! That is power
I wish I had a SD45
Great vid and catch!
645's in "RUN EIGHT"! THE SOUND AND THE FURY!
5:14. Man that sounds tough.
You're very welcome. I look forward to hearing more.
Perfect rev-☝ up for notch 8. 3:22.
JT26C-2SS (Ex V/line G class) powering through southern cross with a steel train
She sets off a car alarm at 5:30!
revering to a train as she is so sad
i like how the engine sounds so powerful. great video upload some more.
Aziz Magazeti the rumble makes me think of a death ray charging up as the engine revs (:
After they got the crank throws right by changing the crank around to offset the crank throws, the engine in my opinion is the best engine built for diesel locomotives. Norfolk Southern ended up with all the SD80 mac's and they don't mess with junk. With 5500 HP being the final version of EMD's 20 cylinder two stroke engine the only thing holding it back from future use was patents in the war between GE & EMD. Caterpillar known for its engines bought EMD just to get control of the patents of this particular engine and that says volumes for how good this engine really is & was.
I had read an article on the 20 cylinder 645 EMD engine and it was kinda funny the Japanese had to show us how to make the engine reliable by changing the crank throws around to offset it's throws to make it live haha.
I've just found the manual for this engine - in a dusty corner of the office! lol
sounds great..and Railworks 3 Train Simulator 2012 captured every detail in looks and sound perfectly..and it has a K5LA horn!
That thing has a hell of a "get up and go!"
This is what I am after every time I go train chasing.......beautiful sound 10/10
Great job and spot! You're right-that is a great spot!
Yep! Your right about that! The SD45 is actually one of the only types of North American diesel locomotives to a have 20 cylinder engine!
Excellent sound capture ! Thank you.
Thanks! Pretty sure it's 16, SD45s have 20. I have been railfanning many years and I know what notch 8 sounds like.
I'm fairly sure that's the original V20
@@LegoWormNoah101 that unit was re-engined with a 16 cylinder, making it an SD40-2. Listen to a 20, it has a deeper, more thunderous sound.
awesome! very clear sound... feel real in that place...
I like how the thumping of the engine resembles a steam locomotive at high speeds
All Southern Pacific sd45s had v20s including the sd45T-2s,most of them went trough the grip two program in was down graded from 3600 horsepower to 3200 to conserve fuel.
EMD's are smooth but GE's lop just like old muscle cars.. Just depends on your style
set off a car alarm just after 5:30
🤣🤣🤣
Shelby Cobra vs SD45!
Must mean the car is weak willed to become alarmed at the sound of this thunder XD
Must've been that gutless 4 banger beside the F150 lol
Great stuff! I see you got that Genset unit parked on a spur track.
That damn car thought it was an earthquake
Thanks! This is in the United States, Ridgefield Park in New Jersey.
I love it when they drive em rough.
Oh yeah, I hear that the ACes are rattlers and noisy. The GEs look very nice and comfortable on the inside, and I sure bet they're quiet. EMD cabs also seem very cramped.
Is this 170 liters of diesel perfection or what ?
Yes It Is
Good catch !!!
That’s the sound of the Terex Titan
Very cool! Got my 645 fix for the day (but what about tomorrow?)
Fantastic !!!!
Super, one of the best HiFi recording sound of EMD 645 for me ! Thanks. Andre
Great sound turn the sound up and its like you are there.
hey, i was going to say that . great sound .
Excellent video :)
Nice horn it has
Awesome stuff !!
Damn... That sound 😦😘😘😘😘🙌🙋😭
I like the train engin sound..
It's a GP20D, not a GP35 rebuild. Sweet stuff dude, the NYS&W is like none other!
This is hilarious...everyone is entitled to their opinion. Some people need to learn that. And it's amazing how if you make one comment all these people stalk you and make these remarks.
Awsome video
Very good !
Sweet sweet music
Prime mover EMD 645E3
Cylinders V20
Power output 3,600 hp (2,680 kW)
If Gypsy Danger was REAL... It would make a noise like this!!!😏😏😏😎😎😎💪💪💪💪🦾🦾🦾🦾
Great posting bro' really enjoyable, thanks. ps The Subkid seems to have anger management issues (lol)
@ELSD45801 Thanks! Yeah, can't wait to see that run.
Tnx!
I'm pretty familiar with the US railroads but I wasn't sure about the exact location.
If you want, check out some GM action from Croatia, units with 645 engines, just enter "GM diesel action in Croatia" :-)
thats just below the bridge between little ferry and ridgefield park on rt.46. i used to live in little ferry.
Yep, nothing like switching with an SD45, great sound, I've done the same in Avon Yd the big 4 yd west of Indianapolis IN, they used SD38's, SD40's and gensets for switching. Where was this?
@KyleVideoDesigns Thanks! Yup, one of my favorite RRs!
@jjcsstudios CEFX doesn't own any GP35 varients, according to the roster of CEFX. So this is a GP20D.
Yup! Thanks for watching.
the locomotive's headlights are positioned like that of southern pacific's headlights on their tunnel motors and other locomotives
This is an ex-SP unit.
This is amazing :-) Where was it actually taken...since I'm from Zagreb, Croatia I can't quite figure it out :-) In Croatia, we also have EMD diesels, with 645 engines, three different types are still running!
I LIKE EMD645
nice vid. that's a workhorse.
Sounds just like the ones I did for trains :-)
Thank you!
I love EMD and GE equally! Got a problem with that?
are these two stroke locomotives still in production or were they stopped after the company was taken over by the CAT?
Thanks!
the emd 16-645 and the 20-645 are some of the greatest engines ever.
by the way, are you sure this is not a sd45 instead of an sd40?
i could be wrong, but the top side is angled all the way down the long hood which is the look of the sd45
Most SD40 locomotives had a larger standing area around the back.
no burnout?
Tronald Dump ye ha
Great - I Love it !! go to Amtrak 92 Silver Star southern Pines, NC Neat approach-
The Southern Pacific sd40 sd40T-2s had V16s ,3000 Horsepower.
@TheTrainManiac Thanks
nice! what time this morning were you there?
@trainman794 SU-99 should not run tonight. however a local should.
I like EMD sound better than GE.
Those EMDs run smoother and have that distinctive low frequency rumble that you can feel pulsating through your chest. The GEs bark and lope like classic muscle cars.
What is the difference between the sounds of the 567D turbo and 645E turbo engines
@TheFlagman2 Thanks!
could be good to other customers as well
Yup!
