Thank you for this very informative and well-made Video! :) And since this is the first video of yours that I saw, I want to tell you, that you have a very clear and pleasant voice to listen to. Sounds very professional!
I love looking at the night sky. My only regret is I've always lived in or near a city so most of the sky is washed out. Still as a child if I could see the stars I never felt alone. Thank you for grouping all of the important stellar information in each video AND not just mentioning things like "Class" but giving a quick explanation. It is frustrating watching videos where the speaker uses technical jargon forgetting he is speaking to the general public not third year undergraduates. Kudos to you. I've been adrift in UA-cam looking for well made interesting technical videos. Who knew I'd find ones speaking to my heart. And here I was about to let go of my 130mm reflector. There it sits but feet from me aimed up. Where's the duster and lens cleaner?
I'm glad these videos help. I am not an astronomer by trade (I have a biology degree), so I'm learning right along with everyone on this channel. Even thought I don't study the sky as a professional astronomer, I can still appreciate all the work they do, which helps us all gain a better understanding of what's out there. I hope you get the chance observe away from city lights...seeing a brilliant night sky is truly one of nature's best gifts.

It’s actually a three star system, with a recently discovered small third star which was predicted by the African Dogon tribe who claimed they were visited by Aliens from that third star which they call the pebble.
Awesome post! I believe the Dogon discovered the third star thousands of years ago, and no one believed them, until the Hubble telescope (I think) discovered it in recent times--like only within the last 30 years or so. I'm grateful for this comment.
@ read about this man way back that ground his own 10 inch telescope lens presumably in a big long telescope and tested it by pointing it at Sirius and at first thought there was a flaw in the lens but then realised he was seeing Sirius’s companion star.
I love to watch night sky. My 7 years daughter always very curios to ask about the stars and planets. I showed your vedios and she is happy to see that.🎉🎉
Sirius has another significance. It IS the beginning of our western New Year. On the night of the New Year,, Dec31/Jan 1 At precisely midnight,, the dropping of the ball in Times Square, Sirius is exactly south on the meridian. It IS what was determined to be the start of the New Year.
The Dog Star. One of the many names for Sirius is the 'Dog Star'. Of course Sirius is the primary star of the constellation Canis Major, the large dog, but this is far from the entire story. Sirius seems to have a very ancient and a very wide spread association with dogs and wolves.
At 1:50, is that size comparison between the two stars right? Looks to me like you have Sirius B way too big in comparison to Sirius A. Wikipedia has Sirius at 1.7x the diameter of the Sun, while Sirius B is 0.008x the Sun's diameter. The Hubble image isn't representative of the actual diameters of the two objects, but it's a closer match to the Wikipedia numbers.
I loved the video, and I like getting to hear the correct pronunciation for the celestial objects, but you slipped up at 7:12 and called it Beetlejuice. 😂
Nice video, i love this channel! The size comparison between Sirius A and B at 2:00 is way off! If Sirius B is 0.0084 times the radius of the Sun, it is around 0.005 times the radius of Sirius A. It should be represented as a small dot next to the much larger Sirius A, much like in that Hubble image.
I have a difficult job seeing Sirius B due to the glare from the A star. It needs excellent seeing conditions and transparency. The drawing you showed, showed very different size comparisons compared to the photo from Hubble.
thank you - that is great - I love to observe the sky day or night. And about 6 years ago whien I moved to our present home first in 2015 I got to know Venus. Later I moved to ground flat and I am able to see Orion and more. Since 2018 Iam having less time to sleep because I am looking out of the window. Unfortunately a lot of light of the street and houses. but the worst thing . every big event - clouds on the sky or like tonight it is raining . but I wont complain, I love to learn about our stars - and planets too. See you - next stop how to find the planets in the night sky, good night, regards Crissy
Looking up from southeast asia we call it the morning star. It rise early morning. As I grew up in Cambodia I never a had a chance to see it cus I usually woke up when the sunrise 🙃
I haven't seen Sirius yet at the back end of 2023 but obviously saw it earlier in the year.About a week ago I was out camping and caught Orion and Procyon but dawn struck just before Sirius got over the horizon.I always find the Robert, think that was his first name, Temple, definitely his surname, book the Sirius Mystery interesting .He claimed that the Dogon tribe of Mali had a knowledge of Sirius B....but when examined it's all pretty much nonsense!
Sirius A is expected to have a rather short lifespan. One might wonder when to expect it to go nova. One might also guess that Sirius B has already gone nova. If it were to accumulate a total of 1.4 times the mass of our sun, it will go supernova. Good chance for a double banger sometime soon.

Excellent, simple and informative video! Thanks for the tips!
Oh, now I get why Sirius Black is named Sirius and why his animagus is a dog.
“Dog day afternoon” comes from the ancient Roman belief that very hot summer days were due to the added influence of the Dog Star.

You mentioned that Sirius B is not visible to the naced eye but is it through a telescope? What magnification / aperture would you need to split them?

I've managed to split Sirius A and B with my 8" SCT; it depends on Sirius B's position relative to A and how good the seeing is. I got lucky on both.
