Bonkers! Anywhere else in the world an ambulance is an emergency service alongside the police or the fire brigade, and they turn out for free when needed. To think here in the UK we're currently fretting because our ambulances sometimes miss their 6 minute target to reach a casualty.

Free healthcare doesn't function in a open border society because the healthcare sector becomes flooded with patients for a simple paper cut. Healthcare services becomes subpar because of this- Frenchman Safety has more to do with homogenous vs heterogeneous societies. I can compare Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan to any European countries and East Asian countries are far more safe.

Oh and if immigrants are such a problem, since you can't get rid of them because a) it's logistically impossible and b) parts of the US economy depend on them, why not, I dunno, give them work permits and tax them which would solve the healthcare aspect and they could pay into the system and fund the government. I mean they're already there and always will be. Make everybody's lives easier by giving immigrants a legit route to participate in the economy. But what do I know I'm just from a small country that used to be part of Yugoslavia, a federative network of countries where people would cross borders and work abroad all the time.

I had a severe asthma attack while doing yard work. I was on the ground and my neighbors called an ambulance. I was uninsured so when they showed up and tried to treat me I denied them because I couldn’t afford the ambulance ride or treatment. The EMTs looked mortified because I was dying on the ground. I was trying my damndest to stay conscious because I knew they’d treat me if I passed out. They told me that they could give oxygen for free so I took that instead. Healthcare is so expensive that I’d live in debt for awhile for any urgent treatment. In that moment I chose potentially dying than paying for healthcare. Yeah living here has fucked me up.
OMFG!!!! I'm asthmatic! I know what an asthma crisis means! But this is insane! I'm jobless for more than a year but my health insurance/care doesn't expire and never will. In my country, a little island in Mediterranean sea, you will have healthcare for close to nothing even if you are unemployed. My inhaler cost me around 8 euros per month and my GP's visits are free up to 12 visits per year and after that threshold a visit to GP or specialist cost 6 (six) euros.
Just save up. For Europeans the cost of ambulances and medical services is paid many times over through taxes. If you aren't an idiot and know some basic home ec, you should have no problem setting up a rainy day fund. Also stop whining.

We moved to America in 2018 and my son started kindergarten and the first time he came home to tell me they had a drill in school. A school shooting drill. I was shocked, not because I wasn't aware America has a mass shooting epidemic but that they are so unwilling to take any firm action to curb it they'd rather subject 5 yr Olds to what to do in case of a school shooting. That's not normal. America has normalized mass shootings like rain. It's madness and it's not normal. Ppl should go to school worrying if there's going to be a pop quiz they didn't study for not if they will be body bagged by midday.
(I'm from Europe) I clearly remember arguing with my mom about which backpack I'd get for school, I wanted the one with more pictures, she wanted the one with more reflective patches, so I'm visible in the dark and don't get ran over... It's wild to me how different these worries are
yeah! when i was in elementary school, we had sh00ting drills so much that i would only wear dark colored versions of my uniform! (we had a uniform, it was just a plain polo tee-shirt, any color, and black or khaki pants) and my thoughts were always, “if someone dangerous enters the room, go under the teachers desk(or just anywhere that was a good hiding spot)”. it’s honestly so sad that a 7 year old had to think like this, everyday.

I live in New Zealand which is the second place where it is the safest country in the world and seeing this breaks my heart because I did not know this is what it was like in the states, seeing these people‘s experiences is just mind blowing.
I work in an office building in America. Within the first week of working there I started memorizing where all the exits are. I also started looking for good places to hide and figuring out where the nearest exit was to each hiding place so that if I had the opportunity I could get out the building. I really don't give it much thought, that's just normal here.

And when we were having our first child, progress at the onset was so slow and mild, (similar to Braxton Hicks contractions), we were sent for a walk. Hilarious! 😆 They weren't laughing at America's civil liability laws, they were laughing at her and her notion that an unconscious person would be able to give or deny consent in the first place. I remember seeing a video on UA-cam where a dunkin donuts employee was fired for giving leftovers to homeless ppl. I was startled at first cuz the dude was being kind and generous to offer the leftovers to the homeless which would otherwise be dumped in the trash. However, someone commented that the homeless ppl might sue the company by falsely claiming to be sick due to the leftovers given to em. You can't even be kind in America smh
I don't think Dunkin Donuts was at fault here, it's really just the country. Working here in McDonalds I can get leftover fries/burgers and give them to anyone I want.
I worked at a sandwich shop and had so much bread leftover that I was forced to toss into the garbage. I asked if we could donate to homeless shelters and my manager told me they could get sued and from then on, they made me throw it away first and then pour soup over them to destroy the loaves. At one point I spent my own money to buy half the loaves at the end of the night just so that they wouldn't get tossed in the garbage. It's really sad that being nice can lead to more problems.

Compared to the US where the taxes are very high they don't even have health or education benefits. I think the 'high' ( its not the high, our taxes, it's reasonable in my opinion)taxes served it's purpose. 😂

I live in the Caribbean, in a so called 'third world/developing country where health care is basically free. For all ages. Ambulances too. There are paid private hospitals but all public hospitals throughout the island are free. It's sad that such a rich country doesn't offer free healthcare to its citizens.
I live in the UK, so another rich country, and our healthcare is also free. Yes, we pay for it in our taxes, but we have to pay taxes anyway, so it doesn't really make a difference that we played for it in our taxes. Our taxes go to our quality healthcare. American taxes go to your military, which you don't need to be that large.

Guns are simply a tool. Its harmless. Just like a car. A gun cannot go off by itself. I live in Washington state. We have strict laws for owning guns. We are legal gun owners. I have them secured & not accessible to children, strangers. They are simply a tool to protect myself as a woman who lives in a rural area. There are guns in just about every house within 10 miles radius of me...and not one instance of Gun Violence. The issue with America is that guns are political. Period.
More people in the US die from alcohol-related illnesses and accidents than guns, but no one bats an eye at tequila commercials on TV. More people in the US die from obesity than guns, but if you call someone fat you’re “body shaming”. More people in the US die in car accidents while driving a Prius than guns, but… you get the point. Hopefully.
So many Americans served in the military, went to the war and came back with ptsd that it’s been a part of American life for a long time... it just spreads to more and more people now.
So many of us have mental disorders due to the stress of life here and this country doesn't do much regarding treating or caring for the mentally disabled.

In my elementary school I lived in a not so nice area and my mom literally had to go to court and fight with the school board just to get me the help I needed to learn properly which they didn't even follow which is illegal.. If a student has an IEP you're meant to follow it but they still would say "Just guess." When I couldn't read the questions on the test, it's not that I didn't comprehend the material I just couldn't read it, and they would yell at me when I didn't know how to spell words and they would say "sound it out" when nothing is spelled how it sounds. I eventually taught myself no thanks to rude and impatient teachers, now I'm in highschool in a much better area and it shocked me how different it was. Teachers are actually nice and accomadating, but they weren't when I needed it the most which gave me really terrible self esteem as I thought it was my fault. It's insane to me how in some areas the schooling absolutely terrible, and in others it is decent. One is unionized and one is not... It boggles my mind how a geographical area and the amount of income an area makes effects so much of your life. When I was younger fights were common at my school- fist fights, and I moved here and my friend who is very passionate about LGBTQ+ rights got mad at a kid for being homophobic, I was expecting them to start fist fighting to and was midly suprised when they didn't. I was shocked when I didn't have to hide my stuff in my car because it wasn't a bad area and I didn't have to worry about someone stealing it if they saw it through the car window... It's so shocking to me how different places can be here just on one small difference and it's honestly so sad, I hope to move away when I get older.

I'm first aid and CPR certified for context and when someone is unconscious or unable to speak is the only time you can make the decision for them. You basically assume that they would want help if they were conscious. Its honestly crazy

I remember as a child/young teen everyone being so in love with the idea of living in the US and when we grow old and our main source of information is not movies, disney channel tv shows and youtubers the idea of wanting to leave in the US goes from aspirational to utterly embarrasing to have ever wanted that, not to me but to mostly everyone I know - it must be said that 99.9% of the people I know are from somewhere in the EU, probably we would not feel the same way in a less provileged part of the words if that makes any sense
Yeah, it's sad. I just took a CPR/BSL course and during the videos we were watching I remembered hearing about possibly being sued by someone that I was actively trying to save. I then also questioned why I was even taking this course to begin with if me being a good person by saving someone's life meant I was going to go into debt being sued. I hate it here.
Our laws actually protect anyone who is trying to do CPR or save someone. If you break a rib by doing CPR or you accidentally do something wrong while trying to save someone in life's danger you're protected by law of anyone trying to sue you because you were trying to help. On the other hand, not calling for help and denying help ( unless there's risk to yourself) is a crime. Edit: I think this law applies to all EU countries.
I’m actually puzzled by that person’s training because it’s not accurate. In the US, we have Good Samaritan Laws that protect people attempting to offer help. There’s no liability to performing CPR.

That doesn't mean it will be successful, especially given the Good Samaritan Laws, but I think the point is that the mindset in the USA is generally geared towards suing. And, if someone does decide to sue you, you may end up incurring legal expenses. People have been sued which is where I think the belief that this is required comes from. Also, different states draw the line of emergency care well, differently. Which means there are some caveats. That being said, I've been in a couple of situations where there were emergencies and I can tell you that being sued did not even cross my mind. I think most people either freeze or take action.

I remember those classes on Good Samaritan Laws blowing all of our minds! We couldn’t believe it. I want to say the primary issue was whether the Good Samaritan does more than necessary and ends up hurting the person worse than if they didn’t get involved. But I’m not entirely sure. Torts is some messed up stuff in the sue happy state of Cali.
I dont know what they are talking about. Most states have the same laws. They are called good samaritan laws. Not sure what state they are in but all 50 states have them. No one has ever been sewed successfully for helping. Unless the victim does not consent to help. If unconscious that is implied consent. Also if you do more harm them help you can be held liable.
All of these are extremely sad, but two really stick out; having an active heart attack and considering riding your bike to the hospital during an ACTIVE HEART ATTACK?!?! Don’t even get me started on waking up from the heart attack and the first concern being that you might loose your job. Also having to worry that if your kid has light up shoes they’re more likely to be a target of a shooting. Absolutely horrific.
I'm a conservative BUT very strongly disagree with Republicans on 2 things = Healthcare & legalization of marijuana (I don't even smoke weed but would rather someone babysit a kid on marijuana than be drunk ect/ many other scenarios) I'm from Arkansas usa & for the past 10 months I have been in the most excruciating pain of my life bc of a toothache. I'll have about 4-6 days pain free or minimal pain&then it'll come back for 5-10 days. Like talking about feels like a screwdriver shaking in my ear pain. Worse than giving birth pain. I've been having to take fish antibiotics that I've been able to buy for $17-$21. I've taken them 4times& am afraid I've become antibiotic resistant. I went to a dentist about 5 months ago& the appointment was $160, xrays $180& I went there being told they would extract my very back top molar , they didn't & referred me to a orthodontist& I was told it would be $4,600-$5,000 FOR ONE TOOTH! needless to say I'm up at 6am in the morning due to being in severe pain all night. Fml. Have a appt for next tues/4 days from now. They said they would do it for $240 for the extraction & $160 for xrays& only $64 for the appointment. So wish me luck please!

@@erihussain8007 personally the worst pain I have ever experience was a tooth ache. I couldn’t even function I was in so much pain. I have given birth twice. My first one I never felt any pain. I had to set and watch for my stomach to tighten up to count how far contractions was apart because I couldn’t feel them. Now the second one I didn’t get so lucky but it was no where near the pain I had with that tooth ache. I can’t imagine anything hurting as bad as my tooth ache was. I don’t think I could survive it honestly.
I remember meeting someone from France and they told me how they get an entire year off of work automatically for maternal and paternal leave.. the mother and father of the baby get the choice on how to share that time.. they could divide it up 6 months each or if Mom wants 9 months and Dad wants 3 months, it doesn't matter.. they both get a total of one year. This is why Americans are so stressed and one of the many reasons why we die younger

As an American it sucks getting others who want change but have more groups make sure you there isn’t change. If it doesn’t directly affect them or benefits everyone from people will go out their way to sabotage everyone else. They are so brainwashed it’s sad. Ex: During COVID the government gave out stimulus checks. There were people who qualified but refused it because that’s “welfare” and they aren’t “welfare kings/queens” or “illegal” immigrants. All that’s nonsense but we had people protest at our state capital in my city because they didn’t want any “illegal” immigrants and lazy people to get their stimulus. You may wonder why I keep using “illegal” immigrants not immigrants it’s because their are people here who associate any person not like themselves or bilingual are immigrants and if they look Hispanic/Latino they must be here illegally. Not everyone thinks that way but it’s a huge country and those people seem to be able come together quick for a vote/protest/parade/demonstrations…. etc. Hence why last vote we had so many campaigns for people to come vote.
@Dank Poster, they literally forced everyone to get heath insurance that covered nothing (obamacare). If you didn't get insurance, they would charge you for not getting insurance - and the people who they are charging are the ones that literally couldn't afford it to begin with, but had to buy it because otherwise it would have cost more money if you didn't.

I am from India, my dad used to work in America a few years back and he got really sick. We used to talk to him daily and he used to tell us that he couldn't afford to seek help. I remember asking him 'Why don't you go to a government hospital instead?' and he told me that they don't have government hospitals there. We were in such a bad position at that time. Eventually he had to leave his job and return to India. For those of you who don't know... India has government healthcare infrastructure where anybody can seek medical help for free or very cheap... its mostly for the people who cannot afford to go to a private hospital. And the audacity of America to lecture us on human rights!

As an American, for me, I am a little surprised at how much of these were about shootings and guns. I never had to deal with that fear much growing up. In Colorado, we had a few lock down drills here and there maybe a couple times a year, but it was never a big deal/ threat in my mind. I guess I grew up in a good community in Denver. But i can see a lot of the points being made about guns. It is an interesting conflict - between not having another unchecked government with absolute power like Britain had over its people before America began. Or like Germany and Hitler had for that matter, who disarmed all of its people. Or if you live out on farmland in the middle of nowhere, there are wild animals like bears that could attack your children. But wouldn't it be nice if not just anyone could have the ability to get guns? Each state is more like its own country. Each state has its own laws, and each of them has different issues because according to the constitution, each state has the authority to override federal laws, as it so chooses. (that can affect the state's funding and protection provided by the government, but it is totally constitutional.) All of the clips that were about not wanting to get fired, the vacation time, sick days, working ourselves "to the bone", debt, and the last one, about talking about not bothering other people with our problems, was very eye opening and good to hear other people talk about those same struggles. In relation to all of this, my sister lives in Haiti as a missionary, and while I was there visiting her, I asked a Haitian staying with her if he would ever consider moving to the United States. He is married to an Asian-American, so he actually has the real potential to get there. The Haitian government often won't hand out passports to their own citizens because they know they probably will not come back. He told me no because all we do in America is pay bills. That is coming from a 3rd world country where school is not free, political corruption runs deep, riots happen somewhat often, thievery is very common, and there is trash everywhere. It is very poor. A lot of them actually would LOVE to come to America. But there are still plenty of them that would rather stay there. Then take a look at all of the illegal border crossings that people from Mexico risk their lives to do so. America isn't all bad. But it definitely has some very deep grooves that have been worn into its people that don't value the people correctly. My brother once said that America is about individual success. It's much less community oriented than other countries. We are very materially blessed in America, but we pay for that in other ways such as our relationships and our health. Man that last one shook me to my core. Why is it the American way to hold everything inside ? Personally I feel a lot of shootings might not happen if we had the ability to open up and not get shamed for it. I’m a massage therapist and I once had a client tell me that I ruined his massage because when he asked me how I was doing I told him I was having car trouble. It made me feel like I was supposed to be subhuman or something. From that day forward when asked how I am I say I’m good even if I not. Why is it the American way to hold it all inside then when we see people from other countries expressing emotions it makes us uncomfortable?
Fun fact: the us healthcare system actually saved my life from suicide. Not because they treated me or brought me back, because I was too scared that if I attempted and failed that my family couldn’t afford the hospital bill. I hate this

We lived in Germany for four-years and I will never forget when returning to the states in 2003, it was a complete culture shock. It was terrifying. Bright lights, 24-hour television, constantly on the run... In Germany, pretty much everything shut down on the weekends at 1:00 pm in the small town where we lived. Kids would play outside without being yelled at; we would walk or ride our bikes to the grocery store with a basket; and we would interact with friends every single day. Here, everyone is always so busy doing absolutely nothing, we've become disconnected as a society.

Been living in Eastern Europe some time now. I remember when I went to the ER back in the US for when I split my finger. They charged me 400 dollars just to wait, and 700 more for putting fucking iodine on my open wound.. Where I am now in Eastern Europe, I had something similar happen again. 12 euros to be seen (immediately), and then 7 euros for antibiotics..
I took a friend to a health clinic in Canada. When she was done I was confused, and asked the nurse where we were supposed to pay. Everyone looked at me like I was crazy. “Why would she pay?” The nurse finally said.

In Ireland, we have medical cards. If you have one, pretty much everything essential is covered. When I broke my arm, everything was free. Doctor visits, completely free, medicine and prescriptions, either free or don't cost more than €4. I'd never move out of Europe

My brother used to get bullied because he had enough money for nice shoes, he would try not to wear them to school and my mom refused explaining how she worked hard for those shoes for him, and don't let anyone not let you wear them. I remember one time when I was younger, the school counselor took me for a walk and gave me the optional school uniform and said "I think you should start wearing this because we don't want other kids to feel bad that someone has nicer clothes." Obviously I was younger but I still stood up for myself as that confused me, why would I? I said "But these are my clothes, why would anyone feel bad because I have nice clothes?" The fact that they tried to strip away a child's self worth and individuality still confuses me.. If someone worked hard to get their children what they have, they should never be ashamed to wear it. I know this is a bit off topic from school shootings and clothes but it's still about school clothes and honestly it was super weird.

Im horrified about the fact that shootings are so common that a mother has to buy clothes based on someone starting to shoot children. And the thought of thinking first about the cost of an ambulance instead of your health...its just sad.
I’m starting my senior year in high school. Over the course of my schooling, I’ve had more lockdowns(soft and hard) than I can count and a few shooting threats. During some of them the teachers would just continue teaching but quietly. We have quarterly drills for various scenarios like fires, shooters, and bomb threats. My school has a locked gate around it. Multiple school shootings have occurred recently in my state. I go to what is considered a good school. This is all considered normal. I didn’t even realize until recently that other countries don’t have this. And people still want their guns. Even people I’m friends with who are aware of it being abnormal just kind of shrug it off because what can we do when half of the population would die to keep a gun on them.

And I can relate to the teachers still teaching - my class was literally watching a movie during lockdown, while one of my sisters had to keep playing her trumpet with everyone else in the band room😑

You can't get sued for helping someone who was drowning or through CPR or whatever there are laws protecting you if you're helping, it's not illegal to not help somebody because there wouldn't be a way to enforce that but you are protected if you do help somebody no matter what you were doing (unless you were the cause of their problems) so for example if you and a friend are doing drugs and they overdose you won't get in trouble for calling 911 even though you were technically committing a crime because you were calling to help your friend

I remember the skater dudes at my community college being harassed about skating in the school parking lot. It was a tiny college, the parking lot was mostly empty and they really just wanted to glide around. One of the admins came out and said something like "y'all can't be skating out here. The second you fall and hurt yourself you're going to try to sue the school!" And they were so taken aback. Those dudes wear their injuries with pride. They hadn't even thought of that lol
There's two components going into this that help explain the difference: 1. In the UK, it's the norm that whoever loses a lawsuit has to pay BOTH parties' legal fees. This means that frivolous lawsuits are much harder to pull off there: in the US, you can cheat the system by suing someone in the hopes that they will pay you off rather than face the cost of winning the case. 2. In many places in the US, our healthcare system actually makes this worse. The burglar who falls through your roof now has a 10k medical bill, and is about to go to jail, so he's got no way to pay it. So what does he do? He sues you, in the hopes he can get something. OR even worse, sometimes insurance refuses to cover medical bills without a legal finding/lawsuit. There was a famous case of an aunt who sued her nephew for hugging her too hard: the kid knocked her over, and she broke her wrist, so she sued the nephew...because her sister's home-owner's insurance refused to cover the medical bills without a legal finding of culpability. the COMPANY forced her to sue her nephew if she wanted her medical bills paid. Since the UK fixed both of these, they don't have the same mania for suing people.

A quick google search showed me it's happened at least once, and been referenced numerous times, though the circumstances are at least somewhat more complicated than the stories present them as (another common American legal discussion trick: reduce any lawsuit you don't like the outcome of to its most ridiculous framing). See, often times in American courts, you can find where the court essentially uses a lawsuit like this as a way to impose a fine on an entity for violating civil standards. Like, the whole "woman gets millions for suing McDonald's because she burned herself with their coffee" story is actually about how it was discovered McDonald's KNEW their coffee was burning dozens of people a year, and just felt it was cheaper to pay them off than serve slightly cooler coffee, so the court fined them 2 days of coffee sales for refusing to help this woman. Similarly, the "burglar falls through roof, sues owner" story is based on a teenager back in the 80's who was stealing some lights from a high school gym, and fell through a skylight: it turns out the district had installed the skylights, and then found them to be leaky nuisances, but rather than remove them, they'd just painted over them. This had quickly been shown to be dangerous, as kids sometimes would sneak up onto the roof: Another teen had, just the year before, died by falling through one of the skylights at another school in the district. So the teen fell through, and sustained brain damage severe enough to render him a mute quadriplegic , and his family, desperate to find a way to provide for him, sued the school, noting that, given the accident of the year before, the school should have done something to make the skylights safer. The court agreed, and boom, "Burglar falls through roof, sues owner"
Woman: I got into student debts in america and here in Ireland I don't pay even close to that amount. *Me laughing in swedish cause I get paid to go to school*
Well you can take a student loan and you will obviously have to pay it back but the interest rate is like really low so it's not too bad. But if you for example live at home you can simply get a student allowance from the state and it's around 345-400 us dollars if I'm converted it correctly (it's a bit more than 3000 swedish krona). It's not enough if you need some place to live but as I said, if you live at home and don't need to pay rent and stuff it could be enough, and you don't need to pay it back. Also we don't have a tuition fee or anything like that either, it's all free, paid by taxes. We do have to pay for books which can be expensive but you can buy used books that are cheaper and many just skip the books completely, often you don't need them. 😅👍🏼 Oh and why we get the allowance I simply think it's cause the government want people to get higher education. People who have kids get a contribution, sum of money for each kid per month (it's like 1800 sek or something). When the kid get's older and goes to high school it's the same sum but we change the name calling it student allowance and when you're at university you can apply for student allowance which is a bit more than 3000 sek as mentioned before. Student loans are encouraged in Sweden, if there is one loan you should take it's this one cause the interest rate is so low to avoid students getting into student debt.
Here in Serbia (which most of Americans think as a 3rd world country) college is free if you have mediocre and above grades, which most ppl get anyway. And if your grades are high, you even get a stipend (not high but it will cover monthly food expenses for example). If your grades are bad and you have to pay for it, an average cost will be around 800 euros per year, that you will pay in 3 or 4 parts usually. I've literally never ever heard of college debt before learning about the American system.
I live with PTSD and a physical disability. My doctor made a huge error and changed my medications (extremely powerful medications). It threw me into a terrible mental where I was having panic attacks every day and horrible nightmares every night, for an entire month. I was calling a local suicide hotline who asked me if I had any family and to please call them as well. I started calling my uncle and younger sister whom I was closest to. Although I have always tried to keep my medical business mostly to myself, this time I followed the hotline’s advice and put myself out there. For a while my uncle and sister seemed to try to be there to listen but eventually they started to become impatient. They started telling to call the hotline instead of them and that they only wanted to hear positive things from me. The hotline service then questioned me about why I wasn’t calling my family more often and I told them that they clearly told me not to and to call them instead. The person on the phone paused for a moment and then said “okay…fine”. I felt stupid and cast aside with nowhere to turn to. One day I woke up from another nightmare especially panicked and horrified, I felt it was an emergency so I called my sister. I tried to stay calm but I began to sob again. She exploded into a screaming rage, calling me a Narcissist that was bothering her just to get attention. The next I called my uncle about something unrelated to my health situation. He brought that my sister called him the day before and immediately said “What did you expect?”. Even after I tried to explain that I was dealing with a dire situation that involved the influence of powerful drugs coupled with a mental and physical disability, he still held onto the notion that I got what I deserved. I couldn’t talk to them after that. Over the next six months without the medication I needed, my body exploded into a state of constant pain so severe I had to eventually take opioids. Before I was given access to a pain specialist I was constantly in the emergency room for level 10 pain so severe it made walking almost impossible. With no one to take me to the ER I had to call an ambulance every time. Eventually they kept asking me every time I called if whether or not I had family to take me instead of them. As a survivor of family domestic violence, I did not. When I would say no they would then begrudgingly oblige to transport me. I’ve also been kicked out of an ER with level 10 pain. After waiting five hours in the waiting room curled up on a metal chair quietly sobbing in agony the doctor told me he wouldn’t treat me. I had a panic attack and started sobbing uncontrollably, they called a security guard to escort me out. I’m moving to Germany to finish my education, I don’t think I’ll be coming back.
I'm crying so much, this sounds like paradise. I broke my arm when I was ten and I convinced the people around me, and then my dad, not to call an ambulance because I was so worried about the cost of it. My current high school gets a shooting or bomb threat at least once a year. During active shooter drills (and threats) I've always tried to take the front spot so that if a shooter came in, I'd get shot first instead of my friends. Whenever I think about going to college, I'm worried that I'll become homeless because of all the student debt. This made me realize that moving to another country is something that I'd actually want to do. Thank you.
I plan on moving to the UK at 19-21 exactly for these reasons. In middle school, some dumbass made a bomb threat after a big shooting that happened at another school bc they wanted to look "hardcore" or smthg. A lot of kids used that to stay home that day, including me and my sister 😭- Also, last year in 9th grade, the principal stormed into my classroom because a kid was joking that he had guns in his backpack, and someone overheard and told him I believe. He had to get searched by an officer right after. AND FINALLY, the medical bills here are absolutely ridiculous. My grandpa, who has Alzheimers and is non-verbal and cannot even walk without assistance, was billed around $500 for an ambulance ride to a normal check-up that he had to go to. I can't fucking wait to get out of here

There is zero reason either that they can't tell you the out of pocket cost than the insurance companies don't want to. If I need dental work done they can tell me right then and there what my insurance will cover. But an EKG to determine that it's not a minor heart attack? Who knows? Here's how gun culture screwed me up. This happened this week. I saw a guy walking down the road with a HUGE hand gun on his hip. I live in Idaho now, open carry is legal and common. The guy made me feel dread, his expression really crreeped me out. I was with a friend who is pro gun, she consealed carries herself. I had an internal argument, chastised myself, deciding my bad feelings were my gun prejudice. I didn't call the police. I filmed him for 2 seconds. My friend and I debating racism and gun ownership as we carried on down the road. 30 mins later the same man went into Boise Towne Square Mall and opened fire. What if I had called the police based on my intuitive, gut feelings instead of dismissing it? 3 people might be alive today.
I call, even if it turns out to be nothing, you never know. It is sad using this second ammendment that goes back to ancient times! Even Constitutions may be revised!

From Chile here: I do see how we have certain disadvantages compared to the states as an underdeveloped country (even if it's not that much) but I really appreciate as a college student, Uber delivery that if I crash on my motorcycle, working or not, I'm not gonna have to pay more than my tuition to get transported to a medical facility and, you know, not die.

Not really. I started with nothing and am now doing very well. It takes hard work, taking risks, sometimes failing and starting again, telling yourself no when it comes to getting in debt and working hard. Many of these kids have just stopped nursing off their parents. Many are entitled believing they should have a 500k house, 2 cars, a vacation home and jobs offering 150k a year for a college degree that is overstaurated. Add to that the person holding it has zero experience and now a ton of debt. Because they decided to pull massive amounts of loan to go to their preferred college. Not saying changes need to be made sure anything can be improved. But asking the government to do it is not the right way. They can't even run the postal service. Stop hoping the government will fix it for you by giving you "free" stuff and go make it happen. That is the American way.
Its so damn sad that like 80% of these are healthcare related. WE SUCK in the USA. And I also realized some of these things also as I started to learn Italian and exchange ideas and things with my Italian language partners. One of which partner was in the medical field and had to study our health system because She wanted to come work abroad and she was AMAZED at how much money it cost us.

Yep, that's exactly why I am moving to Australia. I remember sitting in a room close to the other students, all of us shushing each other, as the loudspeaker kept blaring, "INTRUDER ALERT, STAY IN YOUR CLASSROOMS" over and over. Plus, security went to every door and shook it, raddling the knobs to make sure it was locked. I was always the kid that took it seriously and was instantly scared when it started. But, a lot of people didn't take it seriously and would just play on their phones... My first thought was how to make a trap or weapon for an intruder. I had to do this since I was six years old...till I was eighteen.

Honestly? Most citizens of almost every other country are better off than your average American. I'm ex-Army, and have lived and worked all over the world. I realized when I was a kid that the "American Dream" was a lie to controll the masses. Now I am making my plans to move to Vietnam as soon as the borders open, and only ever return home to America once a year for Thanksgiving. I still love my country and would defend it again, but I despise my government and what it's been doing to the people.
That is what I was thinking when going to visit the USA in 2018....the border control questioned me for an hour, claimed my visa was Incorrect, and forced me back on a flight to London. I thought, "Do you really think your country is a place I want to run away to? I am literally from a decent country. I just want a holiday"! The staff said, "Well at least you're not spending a night in the airport cell". Treated like some criminal!

What I noticed was that even people living day to day on the streets of Guatemala were generally happier than a lot of Americans I've met. There are people living in the provinces of Vietnam and Philippines who, by American standards, are literally "dirt poor" but live happier lives. Thanks to the government, the media, and systematic (brain washing is the best word I can think of here) Americans are raised to believe it is their 'patriotic' duty to go to school, put themselves in massive debt, and work like a dog for the rest of their lives only to end up living out their final years without much to their name.... The only ones I see living the "American Dream" are the politicians who go to school, lie to get elected, work for a couple of years, then live extremely comfortable for the rest of their lives. It's a scam, and while yes there are some immigrants who come here, start a business, and love happier lives than they had before, it is not common.
I'm from Germany and had an American flat mate a few years ago. His family always feared for his safety here, but he actually never felt safer in his life. The American mindset is so fucked up and most of them don't even have a clue about other countries, they think the US is the best, when in fact, it's a 3rd world country.
I can’t shake my scared mentality either. We’ve been conditioned to think America is the safest place to be, so when my family and I even consider traveling abroad, we’re terrified of terrorism and crime in other countries without considering what the US is like. Granted my area is comparably safe compared to the rest of the US so many cities seem more intimidating regardless of country, but I still can’t shake being scared of traveling to other countries even though they’re not even that bad. For example, I’m planning on studying abroad in England and we’re paranoid about the terrorism.

Yes, I noticed this too. I’m Filipino and culturally, it is okay to be asked and talk about hardship and a myriad of topics even with someone you’ve just met whilst here in the States, so many things are considered “offensive” or “inappropriate”

We use to have a good system once, even if it was for profit. $20 for a general visit. $300 for an open heart surgery. Insurance companies insisted on getting a fifty percent discount on those prices which wouldn't cover the cost of materials. Try watching Adam ruins hospitals. He explains why everything is so fucked up here really well.
When i lived in norway I was drinking with my now ex husband and his friends at a pub. They wanted to go bowling after but my stomach was hurting (i have celiac disease but at the time no one knew i had celiac and so i didn't know why i would get these random intense stomach pains but everyone thought i was just being dramatic). I needed to go home but it was night so i didn't feel safe walking home alone at night from a bar. All the norwegian woman looked at me like I was crazy. Norway has such a low crime rate that women often walk home alone at night without worry. That blew my mind because where i lived in America, being a woman walking home at night was the quickest way to end up on the news. My appendix burst. I didn't want to call an ambulance because i was a new immigrant that didn't have insurance so I walked 3 miles in the snow instead. Only to eventually realize ambulance were free in norway. I would read all the ingredients in food items. In america there is often unexpected items in the ingredient list. In Europe i looked crazy because when they say 100% flour there is just flour in it. Norway hadn't had a shooting in 6 years when i lived there. There was a shooting every night in my city. They weren't afraid of being shot by police. I would announce everything i was doing when interacting with police and would be shaking. I didn't have to. They were safe.🤦🏼♀️

It’s not about pros and cons, it’s about the lack of basic human/citizens right, it’s about the lack of freedom that America claims. (40-60 hours per week) Edit: Obviously 40-60 hours per week isn’t literally working your ass off for SOME people (especially if you are sitting most of the time and not having to use your brain as much). I used to live in Krakow poland! I miss it so much, I hated moving back to the states, it was like walking back into a cult, everyone only knew or cared what was going on in this country, and propaganda was everywhere! Even now, years later, I'll mention it, and my american friends argue that every other country, except maybe Britan and Australia, are warzones with people dieing on the streets, and thats why they all want to live here. For, you know, reasons. 🙄 I didn't realize how much that propaganda had seeped into me until about a month ago, as I was planning to fly to Turkey, and I found myself thinking about how dangerous it was going to be. Now, two weeks into my stay, I've remembered: most places are way safer than where I was raised.

The open markets are better than tesco, and worth going to as often as you can, my favorite was a few blocks behind tesco by the koscluszko mound. Next to the same tesco, there's a small resturant, they have the best perogi in the city. Go to Auschwitz, and dont do the tour, its not worth the money. Walk around yourself, and really take the time to explore, and read. You will not leave the same person you were when you entered. On halloween just before sunset, go to the graveyard. I recomend the one near the base of the mound. It's a tradition, and a beautiful experience. Take money, there are street venders with candy, and pastries and things. Most of all, 'soe toe yes' is your friend. If you don't know how to say a word, ask, and point. Most people i met were happy to help, and genuinly excited that i was trying to speak polish. Ooh, also, if you dont like carbonated water, order nei gassovana, or it'll be default carbonated.

When I was living in Japan, which is a VERY low crime country, I got really used to not having to watch out for my own safety, especially as a woman. If I wanted to go out at night and walk 2 blocks down to the convenience store for a drink or a slice of cake, I could without having to worry about being hurt. Cut to my return to the US and I quickly developed a full anxiety disorder complete with nearly giving myself an ulcer because I had to go back to a US college campus and was terrified to go out at night for fear of being r*ped. I wouldn't take any night classes which I had previously loved as a night owl and would just go to class and back to my dorm every day because I was too afraid to be out of my dorm room. I'm better now, but I literally wasn't aware of how constantly vigilant I had to be until I didn't have to anymore.

@@frieda9745 Japan is the safest place you can go. The first hotel I stayed at was in Shinjuku (the red light district of Tokyo). It is considered the most dangerous place in Japan. They had loudspeakers repeating, every few minutes, warnings to visitors about... Being overcharged for drinks in bars. That's it. The worst imaginable thing that could happen to you is being scammed on your cocktail bill. The horror. Generally speaking, the worst you will come across is some drunk salaryman stumbling towards the subway station to go home at 3am. Beware, they might start singing loudly a bad Japanese pop song to you! It happened to me! In all seriousness, they do have a problem with gropers on trains, but I'm told they only target local women, as they are unlikely to make a fuss, out of embarrassment, and don't do it to tourists because they know they are going to react instead.

My sister lived in Florida. Her routine healthcare was done in a mobile clinic (an RV). She died of kidney cancer in 2017. She told me you had to be there at 6 a.m. with your lawn chair to sign up and be seen that day. Her poverty literally killed her.

Growing up as a kid, my parents would always administer “Home remedies” before we ever went to the doctor. Even to this that I’m hesitant about going to the doctor when I’m sick.
Same here- I once had a health crisis in my family and the ambulance bill (keep in mind the family member in question did not go to the hospital) JUST the bill to call an ambulance and have EMS workers come over to my apartment was over $2000 (1689 euro) I still feel guilty for calling the ambulance in the first place :(
Thats actually normal to not run to the doctor for every single ailment. If you have a cold, it does its thing and goes away. Going and getting a prescription for every sniffle is how we create super bugs. Now if you sick for extended period or have something that actually requires a treatment for what it is or your own health issues thats fine. But telling students that if you're sick just go to the doctor is foolish. I got a fever 1.5 years ago and was sick for 3 days...guess what, I went home early from work one day, called out the following Monday and was back to work Tuesday with no doctor needed, being sick does not require a doctor.

Bonkers! Anywhere else in the world an ambulance is an emergency service alongside the police or the fire brigade, and they turn out for free when needed. To think here in the UK we're currently fretting because our ambulances sometimes miss their 6 minute target to reach a casualty.

There is no reason why US states couldn't be run healthcare-wise like European countries. You pay a tax, get affordable insurance, and the government negotiates reasonable drug prices across the board, and viola. Both the government and people save money, the only ones that get screwed is big pharma heads and insurance companies who would become rich instead of insanely giga wealthy. Poor wealthy people :(
And yeah, France, Sweden, Germany, UK, even Canada's systems aren't perfect, but nobody is going bankrupt, almost nobody is dying from preventable disease, traveling to neighboring countries to buy insulin, driving themselves to the hospital after getting stabbed because ambulances are expensive, or depend on pop up clinics in tents like some third world country. And perhaps most importantly the life expectancy of these countries hasn't been stagnating or even declining, which isn't something the US can say.
Oh and if immigrants are such a problem, since you can't get rid of them because a) it's logistically impossible and b) parts of the US economy depend on them, why not, I dunno, give them work permits and tax them which would solve the healthcare aspect and they could pay into the system and fund the government. I mean they're already there and always will be. Make everybody's lives easier by giving immigrants a legit route to participate in the economy. But what do I know I'm just from a small country that used to be part of Yugoslavia, a federative network of countries where people would cross borders and work abroad all the time.

I had a severe asthma attack while doing yard work. I was on the ground and my neighbors called an ambulance. I was uninsured so when they showed up and tried to treat me I denied them because I couldn’t afford the ambulance ride or treatment. The EMTs looked mortified because I was dying on the ground. I was trying my damndest to stay conscious because I knew they’d treat me if I passed out. They told me that they could give oxygen for free so I took that instead. Healthcare is so expensive that I’d live in debt for awhile for any urgent treatment. In that moment I chose potentially dying than paying for healthcare. Yeah living here has fucked me up.

I'm jobless for more than a year but my health insurance/care doesn't expire and never will. In my country, a little island in Mediterranean sea, you will have healthcare for close to nothing even if you are unemployed. My inhaler cost me around 8 euros per month and my GP's visits are free up to 12 visits per year and after that threshold a visit to GP or specialist cost 6 (six) euros.
Just save up. For Europeans the cost of ambulances and medical services is paid many times over through taxes. If you aren't an idiot and know some basic home ec, you should have no problem setting up a rainy day fund. Also stop whining.

We moved to America in 2018 and my son started kindergarten and the first time he came home to tell me they had a drill in school. A school shooting drill. I was shocked, not because I wasn't aware America has a mass shooting epidemic but that they are so unwilling to take any firm action to curb it they'd rather subject 5 yr Olds to what to do in case of a school shooting. That's not normal. America has normalized mass shootings like rain. It's madness and it's not normal. Ppl should go to school worrying if there's going to be a pop quiz they didn't study for not if they will be body bagged by midday.

I also started looking for good places to hide and figuring out where the nearest exit was to each hiding place so that if I had the opportunity I could get out the building. I worked at a sandwich shop and had so much bread leftover that I was forced to toss into the garbage. I asked if we could donate to homeless shelters and my manager told me they could get sued and from then on, they made me throw it away first and then pour soup over them to destroy the loaves.
At one point I spent my own money to buy half the loaves at the end of the night just so that they wouldn't get tossed in the garbage.
It's really sad that being nice can lead to more problems.

I live in the Caribbean, in a so called 'third world/developing country where health care is basically free. For all ages. Ambulances too. There are paid private hospitals but all public hospitals throughout the island are free. It's sad that such a rich country doesn't offer free healthcare to its citizens.
Your healthcare isnt free you pay for it through taxes, it's way lower quality than US healthcare and your population is very much lower than the US
I live in the UK, so another rich country, and our healthcare is also free. Yes, we pay for it in our taxes, but we have to pay taxes anyway, so it doesn't really make a difference that we played for it in our taxes. Our taxes go to our quality healthcare. American taxes go to your military, which you don't need to be that large.

Guns are simply a tool. Its harmless. Just like a car. A gun cannot go off by itself. I live in Washington state. We have strict laws for owning guns. We are legal gun owners. I have them secured & not accessible to children, strangers. They are simply a tool to protect myself as a woman who lives in a rural area.
There are guns in just about every house within 10 miles radius of me...and not one instance of Gun Violence. The issue with America is that guns are political. Period.

So many Americans served in the military, went to the war and came back with ptsd that it’s been a part of American life for a long time... it just spreads to more and more people now.
So many of us have mental disorders due to the stress of life here and this country doesn't do much regarding treating or caring for the mentally disabled.

In my elementary school I lived in a not so nice area and my mom literally had to go to court and fight with the school board just to get me the help I needed to learn properly which they didn't even follow which is illegal.. If a student has an IEP you're meant to follow it but they still would say "Just guess." When I couldn't read the questions on the test, it's not that I didn't comprehend the material I just couldn't read it, and they would yell at me when I didn't know how to spell words and they would say "sound it out" when nothing is spelled how it sounds. I eventually taught myself no thanks to rude and impatient teachers, now I'm in highschool in a much better area and it shocked me how different it was. Teachers are actually nice and accomadating, but they weren't when I needed it the most which gave me really terrible self esteem as I thought it was my fault. It's insane to me how in some areas the schooling absolutely terrible, and in others it is decent. One is unionized and one is not... It boggles my mind how a geographical area and the amount of income an area makes effects so much of your life. When I was younger fights were common at my school- fist fights, and I moved here and my friend who is very passionate about LGBTQ+ rights got mad at a kid for being homophobic, I was expecting them to start fist fighting to and was midly suprised when they didn't. I was shocked when I didn't have to hide my stuff in my car because it wasn't a bad area and I didn't have to worry about someone stealing it if they saw it through the car window...
It's so shocking to me how different places can be here just on one small difference and it's honestly so sad, I hope to move away when I get older.

I remember as a child/young teen everyone being so in love with the idea of living in the US and when we grow old and our main source of information is not movies, disney channel tv shows and youtubers the idea of wanting to leave in the US goes from aspirational to utterly embarrasing to have ever wanted that, not to me but to mostly everyone I know - it must be said that 99.9% of the people I know are from somewhere in the EU, probably we would not feel the same way in a less provileged part of the words if that makes any sense

Yeah, it's sad. I just took a CPR/BSL course and during the videos we were watching I remembered hearing about possibly being sued by someone that I was actively trying to save. I then also questioned why I was even taking this course to begin with if me being a good person by saving someone's life meant I was going to go into debt being sued. I hate it here.

Our laws actually protect anyone who is trying to do CPR or save someone.
If you break a rib by doing CPR or you accidentally do something wrong while trying to save someone in life's danger you're protected by law of anyone trying to sue you because you were trying to help.
On the other hand, not calling for help and denying help ( unless there's risk to yourself) is a crime.
Edit: I think this law applies to all EU countries.
I’m actually puzzled by that person’s training because it’s not accurate. In the US, we have Good Samaritan Laws that protect people attempting to offer help. There’s no liability to performing CPR.
@@deltaflute03 That's actually partly true. Anyone can sue you for that in the USA. That doesn't mean it will be successful, especially given the Good Samaritan Laws, but I think the point is that the mindset in the USA is generally geared towards suing. And, if someone does decide to sue you, you may end up incurring legal expenses. People have been sued which is where I think the belief that this is required comes from. Also, different states draw the line of emergency care well, differently. Which means there are some caveats. That being said, I've been in a couple of situations where there were emergencies and I can tell you that being sued did not even cross my mind. I think most people either freeze or take action.

I remember those classes on Good Samaritan Laws blowing all of our minds! We couldn’t believe it. I want to say the primary issue was whether the Good Samaritan does more than necessary and ends up hurting the person worse than if they didn’t get involved. But I’m not entirely sure. Torts is some messed up stuff in the sue happy state of Cali.

I dont know what they are talking about. Most states have the same laws. They are called good samaritan laws. Not sure what state they are in but all 50 states have them. No one has ever been sewed successfully for helping. Unless the victim does not consent to help. If unconscious that is implied consent. Also if you do more harm them help you can be held liable.
All of these are extremely sad, but two really stick out; having an active heart attack and considering riding your bike to the hospital during an ACTIVE HEART ATTACK?!?! Don’t even get me started on waking up from the heart attack and the first concern being that you might loose your job.

I'm a conservative BUT very strongly disagree with Republicans on 2 things = Healthcare & legalization of marijuana (I don't even smoke weed but would rather someone babysit a kid on marijuana than be drunk ect/ many other scenarios) I'm from Arkansas usa & for the past 10 months I have been in the most excruciating pain of my life bc of a toothache. I'll have about 4-6 days pain free or minimal pain&then it'll come back for 5-10 days. Like talking about feels like a screwdriver shaking in my ear pain. Worse than giving birth pain. I've been having to take fish antibiotics that I've been able to buy for $17-$21. I've taken them 4times& am afraid I've become antibiotic resistant. I went to a dentist about 5 months ago& the appointment was $160, xrays $180& I went there being told they would extract my very back top molar , they didn't & referred me to a orthodontist& I was told it would be $4,600-$5,000 FOR ONE TOOTH! needless to say I'm up at 6am in the morning due to being in severe pain all night. Fml. Have a appt for next tues/4 days from now. They said they would do it for $240 for the extraction & $160 for xrays& only $64 for the appointment. So wish me luck please!

@@erihussain8007 personally the worst pain I have ever experience was a tooth ache. I couldn’t even function I was in so much pain. I have given birth twice. My first one I never felt any pain. I had to set and watch for my stomach to tighten up to count how far contractions was apart because I couldn’t feel them. Now the second one I didn’t get so lucky but it was no where near the pain I had with that tooth ache. I can’t imagine anything hurting as bad as my tooth ache was. I don’t think I could survive it honestly.
I remember meeting someone from France and they told me how they get an entire year off of work automatically for maternal and paternal leave.. the mother and father of the baby get the choice on how to share that time.. they could divide it up 6 months each or if Mom wants 9 months and Dad wants 3 months, it doesn't matter.. they both get a total of one year.

I am from India, my dad used to work in America a few years back and he got really sick. We used to talk to him daily and he used to tell us that he couldn't afford to seek help. I remember asking him 'Why don't you go to a government hospital instead?' and he told me that they don't have government hospitals there. We were in such a bad position at that time. Eventually he had to leave his job and return to India.
For those of you who don't know... India has government healthcare infrastructure where anybody can seek medical help for free or very cheap... its mostly for the people who cannot afford to go to a private hospital. And the audacity of America to lecture us on human rights!

As an American, for me, I am a little surprised at how much of these were about shootings and guns. I never had to deal with that fear much growing up. In Colorado, we had a few lock down drills here and there maybe a couple times a year, but it was never a big deal/ threat in my mind. I guess I grew up in a good community in Denver. But i can see a lot of the points being made about guns. It is an interesting conflict - between not having another unchecked government with absolute power like Britain had over its people before America began. Or like Germany and Hitler had for that matter, who disarmed all of its people. Or if you live out on farmland in the middle of nowhere, there are wild animals like bears that could attack your children. But wouldn't it be nice if not just anyone could have the ability to get guns? Each state is more like its own country. Each state has its own laws, and each of them has different issues because according to the constitution, each state has the authority to override federal laws, as it so chooses. (that can affect the state's funding and protection provided by the government, but it is totally constitutional.) All of the clips that were about not wanting to get fired, the vacation time, sick days, working ourselves "to the bone", debt, and the last one, about talking about not bothering other people with our problems, was very eye opening and good to hear other people talk about those same struggles. In relation to all of this, my sister lives in Haiti as a missionary, and while I was there visiting her, I asked a Haitian staying with her if he would ever consider moving to the United States. He is married to an Asian-American, so he actually has the real potential to get there. The Haitian government often won't hand out passports to their own citizens because they know they probably will not come back. He told me no because all we do in America is pay bills. That is coming from a 3rd world country where school is not free, political corruption runs deep, riots happen somewhat often, thievery is very common, and there is trash everywhere. It is very poor. A lot of them actually would LOVE to come to America. But there are still plenty of them that would rather stay there. Then take a look at all of the illegal border crossings that people from Mexico risk their lives to do so. America isn't all bad. But it definitely has some very deep grooves that have been worn into its people that don't value the people correctly. My brother once said that America is about individual success. It's much less community oriented than other countries. We are very materially blessed in America, but we pay for that in other ways such as our relationships and our health. It was good to hear a discussion about this. Thanks for the video!

Personally I feel a lot of shootings might not happen if we had the ability to open up and not get shamed for it. I’m a massage therapist and I once had a client tell me that I ruined his massage because when he asked me how I was doing I told him I was having car trouble. It made me feel like I was supposed to be subhuman or something. From that day forward when asked how I am I say I’m good even if I not. We lived in Germany for four-years and I will never forget when returning to the states in 2003, it was a complete culture shock. It was terrifying. Bright lights, 24-hour television, constantly on the run... In Germany, pretty much everything shut down on the weekends at 1:00 pm in the small town where we lived. Kids would play outside without being yelled at; we would walk or ride our bikes to the grocery store with a basket; and we would interact with friends every single day. Here, everyone is always so busy doing absolutely nothing, we've become disconnected as a society.

In Ireland, we have medical cards. If you have one, pretty much everything essential is covered. When I broke my arm, everything was free. Doctor visits, completely free, medicine and prescriptions, either free or don't cost more than €4. I'd never move out of Europe

My brother used to get bullied because he had enough money for nice shoes, he would try not to wear them to school and my mom refused explaining how she worked hard for those shoes for him, and don't let anyone not let you wear them.
I remember one time when I was younger, the school counselor took me for a walk and gave me the optional school uniform and said "I think you should start wearing this because we don't want other kids to feel bad that someone has nicer clothes." Obviously I was younger but I still stood up for myself as that confused me, why would I? I said "But these are my clothes, why would anyone feel bad because I have nice clothes?" The fact that they tried to strip away a child's self worth and individuality still confuses me.. If someone worked hard to get their children what they have, they should never be ashamed to wear it.

Im horrified about the fact that shootings are so common that a mother has to buy clothes based on someone starting to shoot children. And the thought of thinking first about the cost of an ambulance instead of your health...its just sad.
I’m starting my senior year in high school. Over the course of my schooling, I’ve had more lockdowns(soft and hard) than I can count and a few shooting threats. During some of them the teachers would just continue teaching but quietly. We have quarterly drills for various scenarios like fires, shooters, and bomb threats. My school has a locked gate around it. Multiple school shootings have occurred recently in my state. I go to what is considered a good school. This is all considered normal. I didn’t even realize until recently that other countries don’t have this. And people still want their guns. Even people I’m friends with who are aware of it being abnormal just kind of shrug it off because what can we do when half of the population would die to keep a gun on them.

You can't get sued for helping someone who was drowning or through CPR or whatever there are laws protecting you if you're helping, it's not illegal to not help somebody because there wouldn't be a way to enforce that but you are protected if you do help somebody no matter what you were doing (unless you were the cause of their problems) so for example if you and a friend are doing drugs and they overdose you won't get in trouble for calling 911 even though you were technically committing a crime because you were calling to help your friend
"No one here is going to sue you for trying to save their life." Bruh if a burglar falls through your roof they can sue you for having a faulty roof. I remember the skater dudes at my community college being harassed about skating in the school parking lot. It was a tiny college, the parking lot was mostly empty and they really just wanted to glide around. One of the admins came out and said something like "y'all can't be skating out here. The second you fall and hurt yourself you're going to try to sue the school!" And they were so taken aback. Those dudes wear their injuries with pride. They hadn't even thought of that lol
There's two components going into this that help explain the difference:
1. In the UK, it's the norm that whoever loses a lawsuit has to pay BOTH parties' legal fees. This means that frivolous lawsuits are much harder to pull off there: in the US, you can cheat the system by suing someone in the hopes that they will pay you off rather than face the cost of winning the case.
2. In many places in the US, our healthcare system actually makes this worse. The burglar who falls through your roof now has a 10k medical bill, and is about to go to jail, so he's got no way to pay it. So what does he do? He sues you, in the hopes he can get something. OR even worse, sometimes insurance refuses to cover medical bills without a legal finding/lawsuit. There was a famous case of an aunt who sued her nephew for hugging her too hard: the kid knocked her over, and she broke her wrist, so she sued the nephew...because her sister's home-owner's insurance refused to cover the medical bills without a legal finding of culpability. the COMPANY forced her to sue her nephew if she wanted her medical bills paid.

A quick google search showed me it's happened at least once, and been referenced numerous times, though the circumstances are at least somewhat more complicated than the stories present them as (another common American legal discussion trick: reduce any lawsuit you don't like the outcome of to its most ridiculous framing).
See, often times in American courts, you can find where the court essentially uses a lawsuit like this as a way to impose a fine on an entity for violating civil standards. Like, the whole "woman gets millions for suing McDonald's because she burned herself with their coffee" story is actually about how it was discovered McDonald's KNEW their coffee was burning dozens of people a year, and just felt it was cheaper to pay them off than serve slightly cooler coffee, so the court fined them 2 days of coffee sales for refusing to help this woman.
Similarly, the "burglar falls through roof, sues owner" story is based on a teenager back in the 80's who was stealing some lights from a high school gym, and fell through a skylight: it turns out the district had installed the skylights, and then found them to be leaky nuisances, but rather than remove them, they'd just painted over them. This had quickly been shown to be dangerous, as kids sometimes would sneak up onto the roof: Another teen had, just the year before, died by falling through one of the skylights at another school in the district. So the teen fell through, and sustained brain damage severe enough to render him a mute quadriplegic , and his family, desperate to find a way to provide for him, sued the school, noting that, given the accident of the year before, the school should have done something to make the skylights safer. The court agreed, and boom, "Burglar falls through roof, sues owner"

Well you can take a student loan and you will obviously have to pay it back but the interest rate is like really low so it's not too bad.
But if you for example live at home you can simply get a student allowance from the state and it's around 345-400 us dollars if I'm converted it correctly (it's a bit more than 3000 swedish krona). It's not enough if you need some place to live but as I said, if you live at home and don't need to pay rent and stuff it could be enough, and you don't need to pay it back.
Also we don't have a tuition fee or anything like that either, it's all free, paid by taxes. We do have to pay for books which can be expensive but you can buy used books that are cheaper and many just skip the books completely, often you don't need them. 😅👍🏼
Oh and why we get the allowance I simply think it's cause the government want people to get higher education.
People who have kids get a contribution, sum of money for each kid per month (it's like 1800 sek or something). When the kid get's older and goes to high school it's the same sum but we change the name calling it student allowance and when you're at university you can apply for student allowance which is a bit more than 3000 sek as mentioned before.
Student loans are encouraged in Sweden, if there is one loan you should take it's this one cause the interest rate is so low to avoid students getting into student debt.
Here in Serbia (which most of Americans think as a 3rd world country) college is free if you have mediocre and above grades, which most ppl get anyway. And if your grades are high, you even get a stipend (not high but it will cover monthly food expenses for example). If your grades are bad and you have to pay for it, an average cost will be around 800 euros per year, that you will pay in 3 or 4 parts usually. I've literally never ever heard of college debt before learning about the American system.
I live with PTSD and a physical disability. My doctor made a huge error and changed my medications (extremely powerful medications). It threw me into a terrible mental where I was having panic attacks every day and horrible nightmares every night, for an entire month. I was calling a local suicide hotline who asked me if I had any family and to please call them as well. I started calling my uncle and younger sister whom I was closest to. Although I have always tried to keep my medical business mostly to myself, this time I followed the hotline’s advice and put myself out there. For a while my uncle and sister seemed to try to be there to listen but eventually they started to become impatient. They started telling to call the hotline instead of them and that they only wanted to hear positive things from me. The hotline service then questioned me about why I wasn’t calling my family more often and I told them that they clearly told me not to and to call them instead. The person on the phone paused for a moment and then said “okay…fine”. I felt stupid and cast aside with nowhere to turn to. One day I woke up from another nightmare especially panicked and horrified, I felt it was an emergency so I called my sister. I tried to stay calm but I began to sob again. She exploded into a screaming rage, calling me a Narcissist that was bothering her just to get attention. The next I called my uncle about something unrelated to my health situation. He brought that my sister called him the day before and immediately said “What did you expect?”. Even after I tried to explain that I was dealing with a dire situation that involved the influence of powerful drugs coupled with a mental and physical disability, he still held onto the notion that I got what I deserved. I couldn’t talk to them after that.
Over the next six months without the medication I needed, my body exploded into a state of constant pain so severe I had to eventually take opioids. Before I was given access to a pain specialist I was constantly in the emergency room for level 10 pain so severe it made walking almost impossible. With no one to take me to the ER I had to call an ambulance every time. Eventually they kept asking me every time I called if whether or not I had family to take me instead of them. As a survivor of family domestic violence, I did not. When I would say no they would then begrudgingly oblige to transport me. I’ve also been kicked out of an ER with level 10 pain. After waiting five hours in the waiting room curled up on a metal chair quietly sobbing in agony the doctor told me he wouldn’t treat me. I had a panic attack and started sobbing uncontrollably, they called a security guard to escort me out.
I’m moving to Germany to finish my education, I don’t think I’ll be coming back.
I'm crying so much, this sounds like paradise. I broke my arm when I was ten and I convinced the people around me, and then my dad, not to call an ambulance because I was so worried about the cost of it. My current high school gets a shooting or bomb threat at least once a year. During active shooter drills (and threats) I've always tried to take the front spot so that if a shooter came in, I'd get shot first instead of my friends. Whenever I think about going to college, I'm worried that I'll become homeless because of all the student debt. This made me realize that moving to another country is something that I'd actually want to do. Thank you.

I plan on moving to the UK at 19-21 exactly for these reasons. In middle school, some dumbass made a bomb threat after a big shooting that happened at another school bc they wanted to look "hardcore" or smthg. A lot of kids used that to stay home that day, including me and my sister 😭- Also, last year in 9th grade, the principal stormed into my classroom because a kid was joking that he had guns in his backpack, and someone overheard and told him I believe. He had to get searched by an officer right after. AND FINALLY, the medical bills here are absolutely ridiculous. My grandpa, who has Alzheimers and is non-verbal and cannot even walk without assistance, was billed around $500 for an ambulance ride to a normal check-up that he had to go to.

Here's how gun culture screwed me up. This happened this week. I saw a guy walking down the road with a HUGE hand gun on his hip. I live in Idaho now, open carry is legal and common. The guy made me feel dread, his expression really crreeped me out. I was with a friend who is pro gun, she consealed carries herself. I had an internal argument, chastised myself, deciding my bad feelings were my gun prejudice. I didn't call the police. I filmed him for 2 seconds. My friend and I debating racism and gun ownership as we carried on down the road. 30 mins later the same man went into Boise Towne Square Mall and opened fire. What if I had called the police based on my intuitive, gut feelings instead of dismissing it? 3 people might be alive today.

Not really. I started with nothing and am now doing very well. It takes hard work, taking risks, sometimes failing and starting again, telling yourself no when it comes to getting in debt and working hard.
Many of these kids have just stopped nursing off their parents. Many are entitled believing they should have a 500k house, 2 cars, a vacation home and jobs offering 150k a year for a college degree that is overstaurated. Add to that the person holding it has zero experience and now a ton of debt. Because they decided to pull massive amounts of loan to go to their preferred college.
Not saying changes need to be made sure anything can be improved. But asking the government to do it is not the right way. They can't even run the postal service.
Stop hoping the government will fix it for you by giving you "free" stuff and go make it happen. That is the American way.
Its so damn sad that like 80% of these are healthcare related. WE SUCK in the USA. And I also realized some of these things also as I started to learn Italian and exchange ideas and things with my Italian language partners. One of which partner was in the medical field and had to study our health system because She wanted to come work abroad and she was AMAZED at how much money it cost us.
As someone born in 1990, active shooter drills and threats made to schools is STILL something that I’m coming to grips with.
The only time we heard about a school shooting on a mass scale was Columbine and that was THE most talked about thing regarding schools for YEARS.

Yep, that's exactly why I am moving to Australia. I remember sitting in a room close to the other students, all of us shushing each other, as the loudspeaker kept blaring, "INTRUDER ALERT, STAY IN YOUR CLASSROOMS" over and over. Plus, security went to every door and shook it, raddling the knobs to make sure it was locked.
I was always the kid that took it seriously and was instantly scared when it started. But, a lot of people didn't take it seriously and would just play on their phones... My first thought was how to make a trap or weapon for an intruder.
I had to do this since I was six years old...till I was eighteen.

Im in developed country, never worried about gun, had only seen it so far on TV & on soldiers / policemen 😂 maybe sometimes on news but veeeeeery rare. Let alone teaching kids they need to be on their toes all the time as some crazy nuts can walk and shoot them anytime.

As a citizen of a third world country, i started to think maybe my small poor country is not that bad. The living condition is average but at least we're happy.
Honestly? Most citizens of almost every other country are better off than your average American. I'm ex-Army, and have lived and worked all over the world. I realized when I was a kid that the "American Dream" was a lie to controll the masses. Now I am making my plans to move to Vietnam as soon as the borders open, and only ever return home to America once a year for Thanksgiving. I still love my country and would defend it again, but I despise my government and what it's been doing to the people.
That is what I was thinking when going to visit the USA in 2018....the border control questioned me for an hour, claimed my visa was Incorrect, and forced me back on a flight to London. I thought, "Do you really think your country is a place I want to run away to? I am literally from a decent country. I just want a holiday"!
The staff said, "Well at least you're not spending a night in the airport cell".

What I noticed was that even people living day to day on the streets of Guatemala were generally happier than a lot of Americans I've met. There are people living in the provinces of Vietnam and Philippines who, by American standards, are literally "dirt poor" but live happier lives. Thanks to the government, the media, and systematic (brain washing is the best word I can think of here) Americans are raised to believe it is their 'patriotic' duty to go to school, put themselves in massive debt, and work like a dog for the rest of their lives only to end up living out their final years without much to their name.... The only ones I see living the "American Dream" are the politicians who go to school, lie to get elected, work for a couple of years, then live extremely comfortable for the rest of their lives. It's a scam, and while yes there are some immigrants who come here, start a business, and love happier lives than they had before, it is not common.

I'm from Germany and had an American flat mate a few years ago. His family always feared for his safety here, but he actually never felt safer in his life. The American mindset is so fucked up and most of them don't even have a clue about other countries, they think the US is the best, when in fact, it's a 3rd world country.
I can’t shake my scared mentality either. We’ve been conditioned to think America is the safest place to be, so when my family and I even consider traveling abroad, we’re terrified of terrorism and crime in other countries without considering what the US is like. Granted my area is comparably safe compared to the rest of the US so many cities seem more intimidating regardless of country, but I still can’t shake being scared of traveling to other countries even though they’re not even that bad. For example, I’m planning on studying abroad in England and we’re paranoid about the terrorism.

So interesting (sad) that a sizeable percentage of US citizens fight to keep healthcare costs extremely high. They believe the con that for-profit insurance companies, lobbyists, and paid-for politicians have sold them for decades.

We use to have a good system once, even if it was for profit. $20 for a general visit. $300 for an open heart surgery. Insurance companies insisted on getting a fifty percent discount on those prices which wouldn't cover the cost of materials. Try watching Adam ruins hospitals. He explains why everything is so fucked up here really well.
When i lived in norway I was drinking with my now ex husband and his friends at a pub. They wanted to go bowling after but my stomach was hurting (i have celiac disease but at the time no one knew i had celiac and so i didn't know why i would get these random intense stomach pains but everyone thought i was just being dramatic). I needed to go home but it was night so i didn't feel safe walking home alone at night from a bar. All the norwegian woman looked at me like I was crazy. Norway has such a low crime rate that women often walk home alone at night without worry. That blew my mind because where i lived in America, being a woman walking home at night was the quickest way to end up on the news.
My appendix burst. I didn't want to call an ambulance because i was a new immigrant that didn't have insurance so I walked 3 miles in the snow instead. Only to eventually realize ambulance were free in norway.
I would read all the ingredients in food items. In america there is often unexpected items in the ingredient list. In Europe i looked crazy because when they say 100% flour there is just flour in it.
Norway hadn't had a shooting in 6 years when i lived there. There was a shooting every night in my city.
They weren't afraid of being shot by police. I would announce everything i was doing when interacting with police and would be shaking. I didn't have to. They were safe.🤦🏼♀️

Well Murcia has a lot of pros for very wealthy people and a lot of cons for poor to average people. It depends on politics who will get the positives and who has to suffer the consequences.
I wouldn't exactly overgeneralize a country in which carrying guns around and school shootings are normal with "every country has pros and cons".

It’s not about pros and cons, it’s about the lack of basic human/citizens right, it’s about the lack of freedom that America claims. The rest of the countries are not proud and egoistic like America, other countries don’t claim to be the powerful, the most advanced and the most wealthiest when in fact their citizens have to think twice before calling for an ambulance.

Don’t let your guard down. (stay alert)
Work your ass off. (40-60 hours per week)
Edit: Obviously 40-60 hours per week isn’t literally working your ass off for SOME people (especially if you are sitting most of the time and not having to use your brain as much). I mean you had better be working somewhere with enough hours and pay that will help you afford a shelter, food, utilities, etc. 🙄🙄

I did the opposite. Moved from the UK to America 20 years ago and I gotta tell y'all...the weird Cold War style fearmongering around universal healthcare is the most disgusting and infuriating thing. The idea that folks in in this country see nothing wrong with healthcare being a privilege and not a right is something I'll never be able to understand. Edit: so I thought this was relevant. Yesterday (on my bday) I found a lump in my breast. I don't have insurance. Am now absolutely petrified because I have no idea how I'm going to pay for this, even if it's benign. Went into a coma in my 20s that bankrupted me. I am...so so scared

the foundation is good. The problem is we are and have been in the middle of a war due to tyrannical, illegal, unconstitutional powers that are not what the foundation was built on at all. Every 50-100 years a depression or revolution happens. Unfortunately we are nearing that peak in what's looking to be a violent revolution where patriots and tyrants blood will be spilled in order to refresh the tree of liberty and what made Americas founding so great, once again.

I used to live in Krakow poland! I miss it so much, I hated moving back to the states, it was like walking back into a cult, everyone only knew or cared what was going on in this country, and propaganda was everywhere! Even now, years later, I'll mention it, and my american friends argue that every other country, except maybe Britan and Australia, are warzones with people dieing on the streets, and thats why they all want to live here.
There's this weird notion in people who live here full time, that the american way of life is the only good one, and no other system that isnt 100% american, could possibly work. And no ammount of evidence otherwise will convince them otherwise

The propaganda is reeeeaaal. I did a lot of travel 5-6 years ago and initially had a really hard time reacclimating to the US. For, you know, reasons. 🙄 I didn't realize how much that propaganda had seeped into me until about a month ago, as I was planning to fly to Turkey, and I found myself thinking about how dangerous it was going to be. Now, two weeks into my stay, I've remembered: most places are way safer than where I was raised.

The open markets are better than tesco, and worth going to as often as you can, my favorite was a few blocks behind tesco by the koscluszko mound. Next to the same tesco, there's a small resturant, they have the best perogi in the city.
Go to Auschwitz, and dont do the tour, its not worth the money. Walk around yourself, and really take the time to explore, and read. You will not leave the same person you were when you entered.
On halloween just before sunset, go to the graveyard. I recomend the one near the base of the mound. It's a tradition, and a beautiful experience. Take money, there are street venders with candy, and pastries and things.
Most of all, 'soe toe yes' is your friend. If you don't know how to say a word, ask, and point. Most people i met were happy to help, and genuinly excited that i was trying to speak polish.
Ooh, also, if you dont like carbonated water, order nei gassovana, or it'll be default carbonated.

When I was living in Japan, which is a VERY low crime country, I got really used to not having to watch out for my own safety, especially as a woman. If I wanted to go out at night and walk 2 blocks down to the convenience store for a drink or a slice of cake, I could without having to worry about being hurt. Cut to my return to the US and I quickly developed a full anxiety disorder complete with nearly giving myself an ulcer because I had to go back to a US college campus and was terrified to go out at night for fear of being r*ped. I wouldn't take any night classes which I had previously loved as a night owl and would just go to class and back to my dorm every day because I was too afraid to be out of my dorm room. I'm better now, but I literally wasn't aware of how constantly vigilant I had to be until I didn't have to anymore.

@@frieda9745 Japan is the safest place you can go. The first hotel I stayed at was in Shinjuku (the red light district of Tokyo). It is considered the most dangerous place in Japan. They had loudspeakers repeating, every few minutes, warnings to visitors about... Being overcharged for drinks in bars. That's it. The worst imaginable thing that could happen to you is being scammed on your cocktail bill. The horror.
Generally speaking, the worst you will come across is some drunk salaryman stumbling towards the subway station to go home at 3am. Beware, they might start singing loudly a bad Japanese pop song to you! It happened to me!
In all seriousness, they do have a problem with gropers on trains, but I'm told they only target local women, as they are unlikely to make a fuss, out of embarrassment, and don't do it to tourists because they know they are going to react instead.

My sister lived in Florida. Her routine healthcare was done in a mobile clinic (an RV). She died of kidney cancer in 2017. She told me you had to be there at 6 a.m. with your lawn chair to sign up and be seen that day. Her poverty literally killed her.

Growing up as a kid, my parents would always administer “Home remedies” before we ever went to the doctor. Even to this that I’m hesitant about going to the doctor when I’m sick.
My parents never do that but it always text at least two weeks for my mom to take me to the doctor after I've been throwing up
Same here- I once had a health crisis in my family and the ambulance bill (keep in mind the family member in question did not go to the hospital)
JUST the bill to call an ambulance and have EMS workers come over to my apartment was over $2000 (1689 euro)

Thats actually normal to not run to the doctor for every single ailment. If you have a cold, it does its thing and goes away. Going and getting a prescription for every sniffle is how we create super bugs. Now if you sick for extended period or have something that actually requires a treatment for what it is or your own health issues thats fine. But telling students that if you're sick just go to the doctor is foolish. I got a fever 1.5 years ago and was sick for 3 days...guess what, I went home early from work one day, called out the following Monday and was back to work Tuesday with no doctor needed, being sick does not require a doctor.

Being a military brat, i grew up with free medical care. Even then we rarely went to the doctor because it wasn't necessary. Why go to a place, full of sick people, when your immune system is already working hard to kill the bug you have? If it's minor, I'd rather stay home.
