I’m glad it’s come across well ( not glad about the experience! ) but the whole point of making videos about coming up here was the show the good and the bad. I wanted to make sure I gave an honest view and for any non-Nordic people and vans coming up an understanding off whilst it’s incredible conditions can be serious conditions and misjudgments can have consequences. We have a saying in Norway for how to stay safe, when you don't know the place. "Spør en kjentmann", meaning "Ask someone who knows the place". In your situation, that would mean; Stop inside the nearest city (Honningsvåg) and ask them where you should park your van for the night, and away from the wind. You're not a looser, just because you rely on other people. We all do in winter time here in Norway, because if you don't, you might not survive. Btw, don't ask for lower temperatures, when it's raining, that's what made it so icy in the first place.
I have no issues asking for help and had far lower temperatures throughout the rest of the trip. This night was warm and wet, stuff melted and made slush. The weather was more severe than forecast, if I had know that I would of had a different parking spot in first place
I took away a new respect for the wind that is for sure. Our little van would have been in the sea in those conditions. One thing that occurs to me about those cold conditions is how one needs to consider the risk of injury when you leave the vehicle. Falling in that ice could break a hip and make it impossible to get back into the van. Anywhere you don’t have cell service up there needs special vigilance in avoiding that risk. Just getting locked out of the van could be a disaster. Love the van and the adventure. Stay safe and I hope you make it to Nordkap 👍
Yes personal kit and proficiency in your skills in that environment is very important if you’re up there. My background is in guiding in the winter. So Personal kit and skills I had everything that I could’ve taken on a high altitude mountaineering expedition if I wanted haha. Signal is a surprising one, I’ve had better signal than the UK for almost the entirety of the trip. However I do carry a satellite beacon ( similar to a sat phone but for texting ) with me as well just part of my normal work expedition kit. Wind definitely needs respect, it’s not that I didn’t respect it that evening I just unfortunately had far more windy conditions anticipated. As for getting locked out of the van, my van doesn’t have a auto locking feature but if it did I would definitely carry a spare underneath the vehicle and a lockbox
That was a brilliant vlog!! I could see the problem so was with you step by step. Being parked on ice is fine but then the storm quickly changed the situation, and all being caught on camera made for a classic bit of filming. A good thing you're not a heavy sleeper, you might have had to swim for it. I could see the humour and the irony and loved every minute. Well done. Great stuff. So good I watched it twice.
Interestingly a few people have pointed out that the saving grace of the situation might have been the fact that I was parked on icy slush. As the wind was able to push the van around on the slippery surface, opposed to be if I was on solid road and rolled the van. But accidents and mistakes happen. definitely wasn’t much sleep last night.
A tip when parking in icy, snowy, windy, or weather-changing places: Put chains in front of one of both front and back-wheels, and drive up on them so you can drive or reverse out of the parkingspot when you leave. The vehicle will stand still, even in the windyest condition.

Do you remember when I told you about driving in Hurricane Wilma in 2006. I'm reliving that watching you being blown around. Probably the most scary time of my life. Glad your safe.
The Nokian hakkapelitta are very good tyres but would of done nothing that night, stud would of been useless in those conditions. Studs are great in ice. But there was no ice the temp was 2c and had be raining for hours. All ice and snow had rotted into 5 inch of slush.
I passed there a couple of days ago (20 degrees and sun from a cloudless sky around the clock) and thought to myself that this must have been where the englishman got blown off the parking lot.
@@MispronouncedAdventures Oopsie. You did not sound like a Hollywood stereotype i guess, but i am far from an expert on English dialects. I am rewatching yours and other creators videos after i have been there myself.
That’s for sure! It through around 3.5T like it was nothing. The wind is this far north, treat even the way heavier snow ploughs with chains and lorries, much the same way.
I say you are tough camping during this conditions . if you sometimes pass Vesterålen pls stop for a coffee or tea, i just got a little nice farm there
That's some serious weather! Really scary to be in that I can imagine, it was tense just watching! You did well getting through it unscathed... Another awsome video 👍🏼 (hope the weathers improving and your nerves are settling down)
Impressive storm, very worrysome. I was once in a lighning storm on top of the Pyrenees once, and also had to drive my car to safety (into a tunnel). Must have seen 100+ lighning bolts strike around me, cracking rocks and blinding me. Tried to record it for inside the tunnel and even my phone was affected (despite being in the tunnel)!
Alex, points to note... dont park aside of the sea when strong winds are forecast... be thankful for supermarket carparks,... watch out for raining fire extinguishers...on the funny side of things... why is that whenever "anyone" has to move off quickly the bloody wipers are always on full speed... even when the disaster has been averted....lol.. oh and next time... remember.... when you do move you should have your seatbelt on... didn't you hear the bloody bleeping man...lol...other than that really have enjoyed this series... and look forward to whatever comes up next... sleep well and night night... Yoki...
I mean I felt the beeping from the seatbelt alarm really added to the ambience of the situation 😂 as for the windscreen wipers they’re usually on auto in my van so because it was so heavily raining they went on to max. You’ve got to keep an eye out for those pesky flying far extinguishers
And I thought the Firle estate on top of the Southdowns was mental, actually blowing the van so much the axle bump stops where possibly saving the van going over. Nothing compared to your experience actually loosing grip, super scary , glad you and yeti are ok 👍
I actually replaced my bump stops before I left! Losing grip when driving is pretty normal if I want too & if I’m being silly! Losing grip won’t I’m stationary parked up and in bed not so much!
After watching how calm you were during the camper build i didn't think anything would be able to unsettle you! Must have been a scary time, I've had a couple of those myself but loved it afterwards! cant wait to get back to vanlife. did you see any LWB 2wd sprinters up there?
Unsettled is a nice way of putting it. Definitely a bit stressful during the first few moments when needing to find a new Location, after the initial surprise of feeling the van get blown around. After that just normal calm self. I haven seen many LWD campers this year. More MWD. But generally there are many normal LWD vans up here
The power of nature…..! Going by the date I’m thinking that was filmed a couple of days after we had the rough weather here in the UK,Hopefully no damage done to Yeti, cracking vlog though, seeing things through your camera makes it even better. Safe travels.
I need to look at the dates to figure out the weather vs the uk. The wind wasn’t mostly SE that night. Glad you enjoyed it. A different style than my normal stuff but it was a pretty different even. Plus no damage to the Yeti as well!
@@MispronouncedAdventures loved it Alex, very interesting, the wether can be unpredictable at times, even the Met office get it wrong and I live about 15 miles from there🙈🤣. I’m thinking I may do my North Cape trip in the Summer months after watching that although I’d love the challenge of doing it this time of year…god knows why😲🤣
My flash, vehicles are perfect heat radiators all connected by fasteners, welds & glue. If you insulate to the ground to not let air under with a set of waterproof 'comforters' them to zip together, (I pattern, cut & sew) you'll toast out ... I always had X-cables all 4-s for water ice, common where sun hits & no wind, close call. Cheers 🍺

Inland really wasn’t me option that evening as E69 is almost entirely coastal in the section. I heard similar stories from the other vehicles in the convoy to Nordkapp the following day

New subscriber here and bl••dy hell man, its been quite the show so far! And i thought i had it bad when i was on my road trip round Scotland, i was parked up by a lake and the van was rocking side to side like nothing id experienced before and at one point i did think it could go over, but still nothing like what you experienced! Nicely dealt with and glad it wasnt worse!
Thank you very much for subscribing. Those conditions definitely do exist in Scotland! I just got a bit caught out in that night. What is the wind speeds of a storm were pretty high they weren’t excessive rare. Especially when you spend a lot of time up in the Cairngorms
Studded tires is the best choice when dealing with conditions like this. Been sliding around for close to 20 years up on 70° north so don`t ask me how I know LOL😂
I would agree. But that night as the temp had risen To 2c and raining the compacted snow and ice had rotted and turned 5 inch deep slush on the roads and parking . Studs or no studs wouldn’t of made a difference that night. No ice to grip for studs and no snow for tread. Blow zero degrees for the whole drive up and down no issues with grip. 😂 those wet mild snow and slush conditions were more similar to scotland and what I’m used too than the nice dry cold of the arctic That being said I’d never be up there during the transition from autumn to winter or winter to spring without studs.
@@MispronouncedAdventures all i know here in finland this time of year winter when its cold and crap its mandatory for cars and vans to have studded tires on.
Yeah, the coastline of Norway, even in secluded fjords, during winter, is not to be thriffled with when it comes to winter storms. That one here was the residues of one we named Otto that originated further south.
Aye with hindsight yes. But also my forecasting apps showed it being a lot less severe than it was. But nothing wrong with adapting to the situation which arises
Well, that was something different. Reminds us how tiny we are and should respect nature. It almost looked like the wind blowed the van back out of the snow after it was stuck and not you digging it out.
I felt it was a pretty unique event and with the sort of footage I had it warranted a different style so I tried something a bit different Yeah the wind blew the van out of the snow drift when I was stuck which was rather convenient! Silver lining and all!
For sure. After the first slide and the shock of that ( unsurprisingly a new experience ) I seem to spend the rest of the evening joking around being battered by the storm! I’ve been in windspeeds like that, and higher on mountains before, but not in a vehicle! It’s actually quite a fun memory!
@@MispronouncedAdventures I think you were caught in the downdraft back off the hillside which accelerates the wind flow so combined with the gusts it can cause havoc. I used to do a bit of sailing and have met similar circumstances when looking for a safe anchorage.
Ha, hardly. Got caught out by a stronger then anticipated wind. I would’ve still parked there originally regardless if I had been filming the trip or not
Generally 4WD is not needed for day-to-day. Particular evening it was slush and wet ice so anything would’ve moved. But being a heavy rear wheel drive with all the way over the rear axle it pulls amazingly in deep dry snow. About midway through season three there are quite a few examples of driving through deep snow. Normally though the front wheel drive vans have the issues because their weight is still over the back and the front is lighter
Sorry sir, but parking in front of the water was a bit ..... - also going out and walk at these wind is not very clever. People who live there would never leave the house at this weather.
That part of the route would be lucky to find anywhere else which is not by the water, that’s where all the roads are. A Going out for “walk” to see what’s going on outside, isn’t really a problem when you’re away from the object of danger of the sea. People who live there would normal day of the week. Although the storm was particularly more severe than the forecast, otherwise I would’ve carried on driving not that park up at that place with a storm . I can’t imagine the town always gets power cuts in storms
You'd have thought 3andabit tonnes of van would be fairly well planted, but no... You'd have also thought digging yourself out of a snow Bank would take hours, but also no! Silver linings and all that!
Not icy but worse, deep slush / rotted ice as the temp had risen above zero and been raining . The icy conditions were way more grippy. As for the tunnel, it would of been overall safer location but it was slightly further drive but my worry for the tunnel was getting there as it would be driving into the wind.
Wow that was some footage you did well to film that in scary conditions that was sum storm are they quite frequent in the North during the winter? Also are there many LPG stations around the further north you go?
Most of the weather for my time up there was pretty calm, however coastal areas probably more prevalent to storms. Not sure about LPG I’m afraid as I don’t use it in my van. But I did see a lot of vans and motorhome with it. So it must be around.
09:10 Is that actually the wind tat blows your van back onto the ice road ? Wow, that is scary, I have seen and encountered some demonic weather but this is serious....
Indeed, it is the wind blows the backend off after I’ve made the corner which puts me into the snowdrift, and then after I’ve got my wet weather gear on the wind hit the van from the other side and blew it back into the road again. Actually kind of convenient for me.
I Generally Try to park Front into the wind, as its a bit more Pointy rather than big flat sides. Did you start off pointing in to the wind but both the Wind & Van changed Directions? Must admit that was rather dramatic / entertaining to watch though, far better than a clickbait "Disaster" video where a cup nearly gets knocked over!
Yeah I have parked originally with a smallest profile of the van pointing towards the wind as you normally would when you’re parking up somewhere a bit windy. Unfortunately after a few hours the wind direction suddenly changed, and then the wind caught the side of the van spinning around broadside facing it which is why I shot off pretty quickly before the next gust came! Glad you found it entertaining!
@@MispronouncedAdventures Thought You must have done, was only asking as I thought you mentioned Side then Rear. Glad you got out safe though. The suddenly appearing Fire Extinguishers were intriguing as it looked like some sort of alien invasion!
Haha yes! It was that or naked that evening! When I thought the wind was picking up I put my onesie one so I was at least wearing something if I needed to move. Otherwise all of the van footage I would of had no clothes on!

New sub here over from Roaming Radfords & what an introduction to your channel 🙌. Fair play for getting out of that situation safely and of course for indicating going around that corner while skidding down the road 👍🤣😂
Ah cool. The Radfords mentioned to me?
Just because I’m fleeing from my life is no excuse for sloppy driving practices 😂
Intense, you are looking for trouble and man did you find it. Good to see you made it out ok. Be careful out there 😉
Well…. Not looking for trouble to that degree! But it found me!
How scary was that!!!! Goodness me. I'm glad you made it out ok.
It was certainly an interesting night
Mother nature is powerful!! Shaking experience🌬🚐
So true! I had storm like it in scotland but I got caught out with my park up on this night!
That’s not you messing about with your twin charger button 😂⚡️⚡️⚡️💨💨💨⚡️⚡️⚡️
What a night that was lol . Well survived sir
I certainly did!
I’ve had a car roll down an icy driveway one time… even with the emergency brake on. Ice changes everything 🧊
In this case there was no ice left. It was all rotten and slush at the temp was 2c and raining
This makes me want to head up that way even more. Great video
I am going back in January for another 2 month this coming winter
Do you remember when I told you about driving in Hurricane Wilma in 2006. I'm reliving that watching you being blown around. Probably the most scary time of my life. Glad your safe.
Aye, I do. Apologies for making you relive it! I’m glad It turned out well in the end
@@MispronouncedAdventures I'm glad I didn't record my trip. I did a LOT more swearing than you did and more skids in my boxers. LOL
Nokian hakkapeliitta with studs, Made in Finland. Best tires for the kind of driving you've been doing last winter. Kind of a must.
Scotsman!
you will have done better than Most! Loads of people send me a photo of it and make a joke! 😂
@@MispronouncedAdventures Oopsie. You did not sound like a Hollywood stereotype i guess, but i am far from an expert on English dialects.
I am rewatching yours and other creators videos after i have been there myself.
Wow, the best video ever 😁 Just like in the movie
Thank you
That storm treated your van like a toy!!! Those van's aren't lightweight! Well they are but they aren't! Insane!
That’s for sure! It through around 3.5T like it was nothing. The wind is this far north, treat even the way heavier snow ploughs with chains and lorries, much the same way.
That weather was crazy glad you are safe 👍😊
Yeah I’m glad to worked out ok in the end
I say you are tough camping during this conditions . if you sometimes pass Vesterålen pls stop for a coffee or tea, i just
got a little nice farm there
It’s definitely tough camping! I’d of picked somewhere safer if I had known what was to come
That's some serious weather! Really scary to be in that I can imagine, it was tense just watching! You did well getting through it unscathed... Another awsome video 👍🏼 (hope the weathers improving and your nerves are settling down)
It definitely was! Also very glad I got through it unscathed both me and the van. The weather certainly has improved!
Intense!!! Looks like much fun!
It was an interesting evening that’s for sure
My goodness. Glad you are ok
Mighty entertaining night, that is for sure!
Honningsvåg, the sommer city. Somewhat ok in the summer, I always try to stay there as short as possible at winter.
I think it might of be more ok if I stayed there that night!
Storms are powerful things, definitely a mad night for sure
@@MispronouncedAdventures Deffo, worrying the van is going to slide sideways or worse tip over would scare me for sure.
Well done! I'd have cacked me sen
Thank you very much! Definitely a bit of a different situation to find myself in
Wow. Bit choppy eh lol
I thought you were quite calm considering you were getting blown about like a plastic bag in the wind :) glad you're okay :)
Still need to get out there safely so needed to be calm in a sense, just my swear filter turns off 😂
Alex, points to note... dont park aside of the sea when strong winds are forecast... be thankful for supermarket carparks,... watch out for raining fire extinguishers...on the funny side of things... why is that whenever "anyone" has to move off quickly the bloody wipers are always on full speed... even when the disaster has been averted....lol.. oh and next time... remember.... when you do move you should have your seatbelt on... didn't you hear the bloody bleeping man...lol...other than that really have enjoyed this series... and look forward to whatever comes up next... sleep well and night night...
But watching you walk up that road would be just so entertaining for us I'll go on go do it just try a little bit
More MWD. But generally there are many normal LWD vans up here
What a storm mate! That was mental! Glad you and Yeti got out alright 👍
Me too, it was quite the evening!
Glad your alright that was some wild night 👍
Definitely a wild one!
True, a forecast is only a forecast at the end of the day.
I’d love to go in the summer as well. Land of the mid night sun
@@MispronouncedAdventures only thing is I’d struggle to see the Northern Lights…!🙄
Cheers 🍺
This winter the blizzards have been worse than last winter. lorry's, trailers and RV`s blown of the roads . But i say you are tough camping during this conditions . if you pass Vesterålen pls stop for a coffee or tea
I bet, the road up to Nordkapp ( and maybe northern coastal roads ) has been closed a lot of time this winter
@@MispronouncedAdventures yes they have closed a lot more this winter , and some more avalanches than last winter as well, never park by a tunnel opening or mountainside. had a snowstorm last days but today sun is shining like it was summer , we had like" 7 winters" this winter here so far. all snow gone here by the coast and then a new blizzard and heavy snowfall
Im well aware of avalanches risk as that part of my working backgrounds.
😳😲😯😦😕😬 the different stages of my face expression while watching this
Probably similar to mine experiencing it. Apart I had more laughing after I got out of the wind
@@MispronouncedAdventures mother nature was taking you on a ride or maybe she was saying, " move the van before I blow you over you're too close to the water!" 😂🤣
Well, if that was the case, I definitely got the hint!
@@MispronouncedAdventures 😂🤣
Planning on joining the Norwegian Van Curling team? Either way you'll definitely need a new set of trousers!
I think I’m at least an honorary member of the curling team now!
Times like that you wish you had half a ton of lead instead of posh Lithium 👍 great vlog.
Plus a full fuel tank and water tank as well!
I would have tended to head slightly inland ,I have seen high sided vans go over in Britain . Look after yourself man . Wannasee more vids on your channel please lol .✌️✌️👍👍
Inland really wasn’t me option that evening as E69 is almost entirely coastal in the section. I heard similar stories from the other vehicles in the convoy to Nordkapp the following day
wow talk about hairy moment, that was insane, great content though Alex, you will be able to tell that story a few times...... it will be like "this one time in Norway" will be a little like American pie ...
Already good to have a another story to tell
Brilliant video and yeah I think I would be concerned putting it mildly about them gusts. First class footage 👍👍
Yeah the reality was a lot higher gusts than what the forecast was! Glad you enjoyed the footage!
@@MispronouncedAdventures And also I think having ice under them tyres saved the van from being blown over as it could have easily 😳
Oh yeah a big gust would of done that! Which I why I got out of there so quick when the wind blew me broadside onto the wind
That really was scary. Glad you didn't get blown into the ocean, you probably wouldn't be here to tell about it. wow
Definitely a exciting few minutes between the first van movement and getting out and hiding for cover!
that looked terrifying glad your ok
It was and me too!
Great video dude, very intense!
Cheers Lewis!
😂 those wet mild snow and slush conditions were more similar to scotland and what I’m used too than the nice dry cold of the arctic
That being said I’d never be up there during the transition from autumn to winter or winter to spring without studs.
Yes, the Norwegian coastal weather is definitely not to be underestimated. Unfortunately I got caught out at night
OMG I would be crapping myself - as you say in hindsight more shelter is the key x
I felt it was a pretty unique event and with the sort of footage I had it warranted a different style so I tried something a bit different
Yeah the wind blew the van out of the snow drift when I was stuck which was rather convenient! Silver lining and all!
Epic video Alex !
Thank you very much!
@@MispronouncedAdventures HEY ALEX send over some of those van photos so I can edit them into the van tour
Im on it today
damn, what an adventure.
Definitely was that night!
Had to laugh. Live in Norway myself... that sort of weather can be a bit of a frightener!😅
For sure. After the first slide and the shock of that ( unsurprisingly a new experience ) I seem to spend the rest of the evening joking around being battered by the storm!
I’ve been in windspeeds like that, and higher on mountains before, but not in a vehicle! It’s actually quite a fun memory!
Quite a few of the other people heading up to Nordkapp The following day got battered in their positions as well and a Lorry got toppled in Hammerfest
OMG what was that windspeed. thats insane, glad you're safe.
Forecast said gust of 64mph max, but I’d of said it was a fair bit over that
@@MispronouncedAdventures I think you were caught in the downdraft back off the hillside which accelerates the wind flow so combined with the gusts it can cause havoc. I used to do a bit of sailing and have met similar circumstances when looking for a safe anchorage.
That looks scary maybe you should have put some sales on the van that could’ve saved on diesel LOL
I think I discovered the van was a good enough sail just by itself!!!
Amazing 👌👍
Cheers. Definitely a interesting experience to share.
You put your life in danger for a UA-cam video? You rock.
Ha, hardly. Got caught out by a stronger then anticipated wind. I would’ve still parked there originally regardless if I had been filming the trip or not
How’s your van in deep snow with it being 2WD …… would you prefer 4WD given your experience in the Arctic areas?
Generally 4WD is not needed for day-to-day. Particular evening it was slush and wet ice so anything would’ve moved.
But being a heavy rear wheel drive with all the way over the rear axle it pulls amazingly in deep dry snow. About midway through season three there are quite a few examples of driving through deep snow.
Normally though the front wheel drive vans have the issues because their weight is still over the back and the front is lighter
Hello from Australia
Hello there
Sorry sir, but parking in front of the water was a bit ..... - also going out and walk at these wind is not very clever. People who live there would never leave the house at this weather.
That part of the route would be lucky to find anywhere else which is not by the water, that’s where all the roads are. A
Going out for “walk” to see what’s going on outside, isn’t really a problem when you’re away from the object of danger of the sea.
Definitely a Silverlining when mother nature provides a way out of the snowbank when she put you in there to begin with
Warning must chain up when parking 😆
Anchors, guylines and ratchet straps might of helped 😂
It's was the same night a lorry with spikes was taken by the wind and was thrown around on the bridge to Hammerfest.
When the weather is like this, you have to hook up your van with wires and drill some hooks in the asphalt.
Hammerfest is a bit more to west right? I’m not surprised it looks a lot more exposed to the direction the wind was coming there
@@MispronouncedAdventures Yes, thats right.
That was a tricky storm.... And that with the icy underground, no verhicle control. Why not back into the tunnel and find a spot there?
Not icy but worse, deep slush / rotted ice as the temp had risen above zero and been raining . The icy conditions were way more grippy.
As for the tunnel, it would of been overall safer location but it was slightly further drive but my worry for the tunnel was getting there as it would be driving into the wind.
near the sea in a storm, very smart LOL
Yes it was all very funny... All the roads up there are near the sea. I felt worse for the other vehicles who didn’t find shelter
epic is the word :)
Definitely a good word! Unlike all of the words I had to bleep out!
Glad your ok... My biggest take away from the video was.. You seem to be wearing a onesie???
?
Haha yes! It was that or naked that evening! When I thought the wind was picking up I put my onesie one so I was at least wearing something if I needed to move. Otherwise all of the van footage I would of had no clothes on!
