I retired when I got the green belt, I still regret that everytime, so now when I memorized all this I'm going to return to Karate.

Thanks a lot for sharing the first three katas from this perspective as well as the individual tutorials in other videos which break down each one of these katas, Sensei Jason. I have checked numerous tutorials of these katas and discovered that yours are the best! I have gained confidence practicing at home along with your tutorials so I can prepare for exams as well as an upcoming karate competition.

I've always known these kata as taikyoku or heian

I know it as kihon kata as well. But I'm in the UK, so I'm guessing its name might be different in different countries?

This video has been incredibly helpful to me as I've begun to learn karate, and I often recommend your video to friends who are learning alongside me. HUGE thanks for all you do to inspire and teach those of us learning this beautiful and powerful martial art. I feel very empowered by karate. Both I and my son love it!

Quick question as a BJJ blue belt.
Why do you practice something so many times which can be countered with a jab basically? Just does not seem practical..

    • @SENSEIJASON
      @SENSEIJASON  11 місяців тому +1

Simply for the joy of practicing. Many people believe Kata is supposed to teach you life saving and practical self defense. While I don’t doubt that was the original intent of its predecessors, the true meaning has been lost in time. Now you have 1,000,000 different interpretations of a Kata depending on who you ask.
So, personally I don’t perform mental gymnastics to try and solve a hidden code.
There are many realistic things humans can intuitively and instinctively perform when it comes to self defense. Which anyone can frankly learn from a UA-cam video or a one day seminar.
Understanding the limitations of modern karate practice, I’ve long undertaken various different martial arts to round out my skillset. I train Judo, Muay Thai, Boxing, and BJJ.
Back to your question, why do I practice something so many times that does not seem realistic?
Well, if you’ve ever heard the quote from Bruce Lee, where he says, “Be like water”.
Water takes the shape of its vessel, it can crush, it can heal, and it is life giving.
When I practice Kata, I am practicing and developing the “subtle” or “invisible” aspects of martial arts and combat sports.
The principles, the substance, what the naked eye cannot perceive: Timing, breathing, focus, balance, form, posture, power generation, meditation, visualization, rhythm, grounding, rooting, and more.
Anyone can learn jab on day one, but that same beginner learning jab might not understand the hidden mechanics behind the movement. They simply see push the arm straight out.
So in essence I practice kata because I enjoy it, and also it helps me in other aspects of my martial arts. Does practicing Kata make you a master of self defense? No.
So those blindly following application of kata, may have some merit, but this is not the reason or my belief to practice Kata.

Thx for your reply. One thing to note on Bruce's comment on water: I always thought that it sounded cool, but later found out that he actually died because of drinking too much water. I thought it was a good quote, but from my experience, I was always a tactitian when it came to fighting. Like: never look down on your opponent, make him think you are weak , and such. I felt the " flow" many times, but it was always better to use tactics in my opinion. Anyways thx for the explanation again. Greetings from Hungary
