Sight sizing & proportional measuring is a good skill to have especially when working from life :) If you have problems with value & are working from a photograph, convert it to grey scale or print it out in B&W in addition to your full color reference. In life drawing situations, red rubilith (a piece of red tinted plastic) makes a good filter viewfinder that makes seeing the values easier since it obscures the color & details similar to squinting. (Just tricks I learned in a classical atelier ) A simple rule that can be helpful is change of plane, change of value. So many different approaches to drawing & painting, use what works for you :D
I'm consistently learning from you. Thank you so much for all of the time and energy you put into your content and courses. Always helpful and valuable.
Thanks Chris!! Looking forward to the class. I won't be there on May 6th since my husband and I will be celebrating our 40th anniv. But, I will watch the repeat. You are a great teacher.

In all my years of painting, I've learned so much from you and your videos. Thank you 😊
Dude, I searched for you to come say how dope you are as an actor. Then I meet you painting, like wth. You are too dope.
Wow. Today I learned!

Have fun!
This was a very helpful video as I’ve been focusing on portraits these last few months. Looking forward to paint week!
Glad it was helpful!
like a sculpture! 🤯 That gave me an epiphany type of experience 😂
Thanks🙏🏾
I love your channel and style of teaching.👏🏽✨
Awesome! Thank you!
Using Faber castle Aqua color pencils let's you wipe away the grid with water once your reference is blocked in. Game changer for me.
Colored pencils donot interact badly with oil, so you can just cover the pencil with oil paint
Thank you for building my confidence 🙏
No problem!
Great video Chris - very helpful, thanks!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Can you please do a tutorial for using acrylic?
Oh gosh. Thank you. I love you 🙏😭
Thank you so much 😊
You're welcome 😊
Just FYI, where I'm from we call it proportions instead of dimensions.
Love your videos they are crazy helpful!

Lots of good info, thank you! 😊
Thankyou for sharing that iPhone tip. I had noooo idea 😂 ugh I could have saved myself so much time
Happy to help!
What is the name if the book about the Loomis head method?
How many months did it take you to master the use of the Loomis method?
What I mainly learned from portrait art is if you want an expressive result, don’t finish a painting, if you don’t, finish it 😅
ah yes, the ole "preserve your drawing" issue. #1 reason I went to freehand. Much harder to get likeness but it truely so much more alive.
can someone recommend a free app/online tool to easily break the reference picture down into values?
Value Study
❤❤❤
I think there is a mistake here 3x4 and 16x20 is not the same aspect ratio
Oops you’re right. Meant to say 18x24
I'm so bad at drawing that i use grid+divider 😂

Or you can practice. Grids are for children. Just as well photo copy it onto the canvas.
