@@jasoncullmann157 2020, lost my job, moved back in with my parents, had nothing else to do. I always wanted to invest in my art skills but didn't have the time. I found this channel and learned a lot! This channel helped me build the foundation. Now I can understand and implement many art concepts. Remember to sign up for his free paint week.

Sight sizing & proportional measuring is a good skill to have especially when working from life :) If you have problems with value & are working from a photograph, convert it to grey scale or print it out in B&W in addition to your full color reference. In life drawing situations, red rubilith (a piece of red tinted plastic) makes a good filter viewfinder that makes seeing the values easier since it obscures the color & details similar to squinting. (Just tricks I learned in a classical atelier ) A simple rule that can be helpful is change of plane, change of value. So many different approaches to drawing & painting, use what works for you :D

Using Faber castle Aqua color pencils let's you wipe away the grid with water once your reference is blocked in. Game changer for me.

Colored pencils donot interact badly with oil, so you can just cover the pencil with oil paint

What I mainly learned from portrait art is if you want an expressive result, don’t finish a painting, if you don’t, finish it 😅

ah yes, the ole "preserve your drawing" issue. #1 reason I went to freehand. Much harder to get likeness but it truely so much more alive.

Or you can practice. Grids are for children. Just as well photo copy it onto the canvas.
