The re-done area looks fantastic...and I love John's stone pathway additions!
I think you could prune out a few tree branches (not entire trees) and thin out the shrubs and some of the plants on the right side of the walkway (near the steps) to open it up without losing privacy.
Always fun to be in the garden with you!

I’m in zone 6a/b S.E. Michigan. I bought a eastern redbud tree from an estate sale six years ago and it is flourishing here. My research which I concluded brought me to the conclusion that Redbud trees do like some shade not full sun. It is thriving here and I even have seed pods from last year, which I winter sowed and now have 7 baby redbuds. Not sure on the next step, but I’m trying to mimic nature. I think it took about three years to maturity for the seed pods.

If gardening was ever done, it would cease to be fun. It is our place to create...each day. It looks marvelous.dont lose the red leafed tree in front of the house. You and the birds would miss it. I would shorten the shrub in front of the red leaf tree to open that area up. Clean up and maintenance and change up in the garden brings the same satisfaction cleaning house and rearranging furniture and adding a bouquet in house brings. There would be no bored housewives if they kept their homes for their families like you do. Always enjoyable. Thank you. I am on break from yard cleanup watching you do same. Lol.

I love your trees. Perhaps you can have an arborist visit and thin them out a bit so you can see through them a bit from the entrance to your property. Also I think that large bush to the right of the sidewalk could be removed and that would really give you more visual of the house, keep the lower growing perennials and dwarf bushes. Have a wonderful day. 🇨🇦

  • @BarbaraChapmanFrenchEthereal

PPS I agree! Don't cut your trees down. You could limb them up a bit, but anything you do taking them away will make the birds wary of staying around your porch. They want the understory so they can quickly hide if predators are around (as I'm sure you know). The new bed turned out beautiful and I love the little stone walkway you and your husband created!

Beautiful job! So clean and tidy. I like ground cover plants but to me it always looks messy and needing something else. While this will take some trimming along the way, it looks so much more planned out and soothing to the eye. IMO🌲🌱🌳🌺

Good morning Mary! Great transformation of this plant bed! Love the Eastern Redbud (I have those in my yard here in NC) and removing the ground cover really gives a fresh look to what you’ve done! In regards to your early on question about the trees on other side of the sidewalk, I think giving them a good pruning and shaping them up would help to give you a clearer vision as to what you need to do…keep or delete. Hope this helps! 💕

My dad planted a redbud tree for my mom one year for their anniversary since the leaves are heart-shaped. We’re in SW Ohio and its done well so far. Also, I watched a video last year on “over wintering” geraniums. I’m going to try doing that this year.

Really love your transformation and the planting you chose. Trees are so pretty especially looking out from inside. I probably wouldn't want limbs too close to deck because of snakes that could fall from them. Love those eastern red buds, the heart shaped leaves are just as nice as the blooms in the Springtime, and they are hardy trees. Your home and gardens are so pretty. I like the shrubs in landscape such as you have

Mary that turned out just so beautiful! I would not cut down any trees leading up to your home, they make it so charming and I can only imagine the view from the inside, oh my that would be a wonderful home to love in. Ever since I found your channel I have told my husband if I could pick anywhere to live it would be in your home and I really mean that. I love that it is private, full of charm and having the ability to have a large garden must be just a great environment to live in. Anymore this country is becoming a concrete nation with all the buildings going up so your trees deserve to live 😁

Your garden makeover looks great!! It should grow in very well in the years ahead. If I want to add color to an area, I just add pots filled with annual color. Throwing mulch is hard work but the results are worth it. Well done, John and Mary!

We’re learning how important it is to prune back our bushes. My husband has wanted to build a privacy fence for years; I suggested a living fence and did it in one year. Problem: we pulled our deck swing into/over the end of the deck so that we’d have room to work and I planted Rose of Sharon saplings too close to the deck. Now we need to trim back the bushes bc they’re growing into the swing area; we even had a bloom come inside the back portion of the swing between the slats! 😆.

I hope your redbud tree survives your cold winters, as well. Hopefully, since it is closer to your home, it will have a little protection from the elements. I'm in the deep south so the redbuds grow all out in the woods. They are beautiful in early spring. Your yard is this gardeners dream. You two have given me the kickstart this morning to get outside and mow! It is all lovely!!!!❤❤

I won hundred percent can relate to your gardening thought process. I lived in my home for just over 30 years and expand my garden and redo things. My grandfather used to work for the Brooklyn botanic gardens. He taught me that fragile trees like your redbud should be planted on the side of the house that blocks the wind. I don’t know if that’s all new trees or just difficult trees. Food for thought I suppose. Garden looks great!

Jeepers you must’ve slept like a log after hauling all those rocks! With regards to your tree question, if the outlook from the windows in your house is something you love to see then leave them, if you want your view to be further reaching, prune them. The garden bed looks fantastic! Good job. I have hollyhocks in my garden every summer, they give height and gorgeous flowers for the bees, they draw the attention of neighbours every year, they’re so beautiful.

Perfect. I too love Red Bud Trees, we had to cut ours down as it was becoming hollow. Folks around here say they don't like them because they spread, but they are the first ones to bloom in spring, so pretty and gives hope that spring is coming. Our Red Bud was hollow to the base of the trunk, so filled it with dirt and planted Geraniums inside the hollow with a trailing vine.
