I'm actually glad you did this video showing how these rounds work. A buddy of mine told me about these rounds. Hell, I'd buy a 9mm handgun just to get these rounds. Excellent work. Thank you for posting this.
I'd like to see similar tests like you did for the G2 RIP for the Liberty Civil Defense 9mm round. Its a similar concept, a frangible all copper round with petals that break off to expand the wound cavity, but it is significantly lighter, and faster (over 2000 FPS). I would be interested in how they compare.
+Logan Brunson There are many, many videos on Liberty and other frangible rounds, and the results are 100% failure, like the RIP. They don't create permanent stretch cavities, the center doesn't expand causing a good central wound channel to vitals, and the fragments are all but worthless.
Great video! And I appreciate your approach. However I feel like this round is a gimmick. It created a massive temporary wound cavity which has been found not to really cause a ton of damage. And leaves the petals only about 6 inches in. So basically after the petals separate, you get a narrow wound channel like with a FMJ. There is a reason why expanding hollow points have been the standard in defeating unarmored targets. It works! A 95 grain solid copper projectile that leaves petals shallow and doesn't create a large permanent wound cavity will not be as effective. That being said, I wouldn't want to take one to the chest either though.
fire2box It's not even a great round for that purpose either once you understand ballistics. It's a round that looks impressive, but it really underperforms compared to other ammunition.
Hey Richard! Is there any chance we could get a control video for normal 9mm full metal jacket? It would be great to have a standard comparison to see how effective the R.I.P. round really is. Myself having rarely encountered interior walls that were insulated, it would seem you were stacking the deck to skew your demonstration of interior wall penetration.

I find that very interesting that the bullet spreads apart in a softer target better then a something that is harder such as the dry wall or the center block. I wonder if that is a design flaw or if they meant for it to only spread when hitting a fleshy target?
It's the intended design. "The geometry at the tip of the projectile has much to do with the way the projectile travels through tissue. It has been long known in the medical industry that a trocar point penetrates the dermis layer more efficiently." Basically, it's made for the penetration of exposed human tissue
My experience with defense ammo has been limited to Lehigh Defense Extreme Penetrator, Precision One HP/XTP, Federal HST, Hornaday XTP, Sig Sauer Elite V-Crown, Speer Gold Dot, and Magtech Guardian Gold with the Federal HST’s penetration, expansion, and consistency taking 1st place. I’m anxious to try out the G2’s offerings. I’m not surprised by the lack of substantial penetration of the G2’s performance due to the expansion of the trocars slowing the round down upon impact and initial penetration. Great vids! keep them coming.
No, hollow point is standard self defense ammo, it also prevents over penetration. There's nothing worse than hitting the bad guy, but then having the FMJ bullet pass through him into an innocent person.
Fred5612 Makes sense, during war we are all "good" people trying to defend our countries, but if someone break into our own home, and try to do something to our family, he doesn't deserve any compassion.
I love these vids. That being said I cannot see why this kind of ammo should be widely available. It just seems so much more lethal than regular rounds and the point of, say, home defence should be to incapacitate, not kill, the intruder. Thoughts?
That's nice. Why do you love them? Is it the cinematography? Is it the subject matter? To choose the best available resources to protect your life, your family, and your freedoms. These are unalienable human rights. It is buy no means anymore "lethal" than your standard FMJ or hollow point round. There is one purpose for a lethal ammunition, that is to kill, hence the "lethal" part. It is not designed to maim or incapcitate without high probability of causing severe bodily harm or death. You aim center mass of your target and fire until the threat is gone. If that means your target dies, so be it. There are non-lethal options if you think your target is not going to commit severe bodily harm or death against you or your family. Thoughts?
jameskgeary Ha! Nice one. :P ***** I love the slow-motion shots. I love to see the effect of different bullets on different materials. I find gunmanship quite interesting.
These rounds are LESS lethal, because they are a bad design that is not very effective. As far as incapacitate rather than kill..the goal is to stop the attacker, not kill the attacker. Sadly many times the only way to do that is with killing.
"Regular rounds" for home/self defense are hollow points. This isn't all that big of an improvement. And it would seem that the more lethal that a bullet is, the faster a threat would be incapacitated. You presumably wouldn't have to shoot as many times to achieve incapacitation either.
Ballistic jell w/ denim or a car windshield w/ ballistic jell. I think the windshield would be a good one since the company claims that this round can penetrate must obstacles a regular round might not be able to, I'd like to know if the round would maintain enough kinetic energy to incapacitate an assailant after passing through a windshield.
Fantastic shots!! It's nice to finally see some testing done with real ordinance gelatin and not just the usual watermelon-type stuff. Isn't there a type of gelatin that will show both the permanent cavity and the temporary "shock" cavity at the same time? Also, I'd suggest in the future draping a couple layers of denim over the front of the block to simulate clothing. Man, those high speed camera shots are incredible to see!!
This ammo is marketing hype. Doesn't have enough penetration. Ballistics gel simulates muscle tissue, not bones, skin and cartilage. This round basically does GREAT in gel!, but its worthless in the human body.
***** When it comes to ballistics penetration is key. Those breaking pedals do great in tissue, but lack the weight to BUST through a ribcage or sternum. The body isn't made of pure muscle (ballistics gel), it has bones and other hard substances. The only thing worth while in this round is the "penetrator" in the rear. The real question is how effective is the lead penetrator? Well the penetrator is about as good as a .380 FMJ. Why would i want useless trocars and a extremely light- weight penetrator while i can buy a 9mm 124 grain JHP that can expand to .45 caliber, have the power to bust through a rib cage/sternum and still RETAIN its 124 grain weight to do damage to the internals? Weight retention, penetration, energy and shot placement are whats important. For instance i could take a 12 gauge shotgun with number 9 target loads ( 750ish pellets about the size of a large grain of sand) and blow a ballistics gel block to pieces... does that mean that a 12 gauge with bird shot is effective at stopping a threat? NO! The small pellets are extremely light and don't have the penetration to pass through tough skin, a rib cage, cartilage and maybe a sternum... but it sure looks impressive on ballistics gel with a high FPS camera!! I understand human anatomy and basic science.
TheMango121 Reading your posts here my hope in mankind is renewed. You are a breath of fresh air in a sea of stupidity and ignorance that I read everyday. You have accurately presented and articulated the facts of this ammunition... the laws of physics and human physiology cannot be ignored. Thank you, sir.
As much as I love my guns, I really do not support ammunition such as this for civilian use. At least with a shotgun, you can find the entry wounds of most pellets. I would hate to be on the other end of the barrel with this ammo, but thats just me...
shmimbadad I never said that wasn't the point, but I do not plan on being in any situation in which I am on the other end, and hope that no individual takes it into their hand to put me there...
If you pull out your gun in a self defense situation and you are not expecting to destroy or kill what you are pointing at I wouldn't recommend carrying a gun. It's not the ideal choice to kill another human being but I want this person stopped as soon as possible and if ammunition like this is going to neutralize my threat faster I'm going to use it.
I love guns and i belive in the 2nd ammendment even if it is arhaic in nature. Even though these bullets are very well made and are difinately engineered to kill extremely efficiently... i dont think that these bullets should exist. The overkill factor is over the top. Shooting someone with ball ammo or even a regular hollow point is enough for close quarters perrsonal defense. These bullets are made to kill and render the wound un-operably by a surgeon. If a criminal went on a shooting spree with these. There would be little to no survivors. Even in a personal defense situation your best bet is to wound an assailant not kill him. You could shoot someone in the leg with this round and odds are one of its 8 leaflets would sever an artery. I dont think this is a humane projectile.
I would never pull my firearn with expectaions of the target walking away. If I'm forced to draw down then its already at a point of no return. But I carry a 10mm..so really doesnt matter what round.
I believe the term you were trying to use is "inoperable". Ugh. Illiterate people trying to sound intelligent in a debate are very tedious and frustrating to me.
No, no it does not. It does a lot more damage than any .22, to say otherwise is just saying stupid shit for the sake of saying stupid shit. Do I like this round? No. I would not touch this round after seeing all of the third party testing. It is, as far as I am concerned, a hype-fueled, polished sack of shit. But I would use it over a .22 if needs be. Course, I do believe I know where you are getting your bullshit line, which is from the "Test" done on the Truth About Guns where the author "replicated" the damage cause by 1 of these rounds, with 7-8 bullets fired from a .22. Which really, proves your point as complete bullshit. Please stop saying blatantly obvious, pathetic lies.
Pure BS. loses most of it's weight straight off, doesn't penetrate deeply enough. only 1/4th of the weight goes through. Better off with a good hollowpoint that flowers out and created a bigger wound channel.'
Too much penetration and your killing those behind your target. Hell we could get FMJ if you wanted penetration then you could get that multi-kill streak toward getting that attack chopper

I've yet to see such videos. The round base that's left after the first 4-5" of penetration is merely acting like FMJ. Even the temp wound cavity seen in Ryan's slo mo shows a very small stretch cavity.
What the hell is that ice like thing ?
Ballistic gel.
thanks alot

ballistic gel simulates a human body. this would be a wonderful video for all the Liberals to see, who are screaming for war in the streets.
i dont believe in war , by the way we are new movement in muslim countries , you can call us (the protestants muslims) we want muslims to remain on quran only , and let go the sayings of preachers with beards and sayings that assembled to prophet mohammed,\\ there will be no hijab no beards no hate on every one in (20-50)years that will come , remember my words
It has been long known in the medical industry that a trocar point penetrates the dermis layer more efficiently." Basically, it's made for the penetration of exposed human tissue
jesus, imagine having to get all that dry wall out of you after being shot....
nice home defense ammo.
I was thinking the same thing. Got your bullet wound....and drywall in ya to boot.
/R/The_Donald pretty sure you’d likely be dead from this kind of bullet. Especially if hit more than once.
My experience with defense ammo has been limited to Lehigh
Defense Extreme Penetrator, Precision One HP/XTP, Federal HST, Hornaday XTP,
Sig Sauer Elite V-Crown, Speer Gold Dot, and Magtech Guardian Gold with the
Federal HST’s penetration, expansion, and consistency taking 1st place.
I’m anxious to try out the G2’s offerings. I’m not surprised by the lack
of substantial penetration of the G2’s performance due to the expansion of the
trocars slowing the round down upon impact and initial penetration. Great vids!
keep them coming.
he reminds me of fpsrussia but i like how he does it
pretty awesome
How have I not found this channel
Rip vs slab of beef with ribs.
lol
Damn now meat going to have seeds in it like a watermelon
Awesome as always.
These rounds are so nasty! Isn't it illegal to sell them to people?
No, hollow point is standard self defense ammo, it also prevents over penetration. There's nothing worse than hitting the bad guy, but then having the FMJ bullet pass through him into an innocent person.
Allen Skillicorn
Makes sense, but it will probably shred the guy inside.
In the Geneva convention hollow points are illegal to be used at war. For home defense, target practice, hunting etc they are perfectly legal though.
Fred5612 Makes sense, during war we are all "good" people trying to defend our countries, but if someone break into our own home, and try to do something to our family, he doesn't deserve any compassion.
Fred5612 you have absolutely no clue what you're talking about. None at all. NONE.
Great video. Think I just found my new UA-cam addiction. Thank you
glad I'm not the surgeon who has to find those petals in someone's gut.. but if it's a criminal home-invader.. he gets what he deserves..
Nice footage. Interesting results
Whats the purpose for replaying the slow mothion iver and over again?
that gel looking awesome in slowmotion :D
I love these vids. That being said I cannot see why this kind of ammo should be widely available. It just seems so much more lethal than regular rounds and the point of, say, home defence should be to incapacitate, not kill, the intruder.
Thoughts?
You make a good point, until the intruder sues you.
www.cbsnews.com/news/burglar-sues-calif-homeowner-90-who-returned-fire/
Nice one. :P
***** I love the slow-motion shots.
Would like to see this RatedRR with some shotgun rounds.
*****
When it comes to ballistics penetration is key.
Aright man how about we put one .40 S&W hollow point in your chest and see if you're still standing after.
tony5the0tiger8
What are you talking about....?
TheMango121 He doesn't know, he just wanted to belong. Or kill someone.
TheMango121 Reading your posts here my hope in mankind is renewed. You are a breath of fresh air in a sea of stupidity and ignorance that I read everyday.
You have accurately presented and articulated the facts of this ammunition... the laws of physics and human physiology cannot be ignored. Thank you, sir.
those slo mo views are awesome!
Что-то новенькое)
Класс!!
What a devastating round.
How does it fair or favor on the gun or barrel after a lot of shooting?
Really nice going to get sum soon . Thanks for the vid
Gonzo Gaming I'm amazed you don't believe in shoot-to-kill.
“I don’t mind a bullet that kills, I just don’t want a bullet to kill them this bad”
I would never pull my firearn with expectaions of the target walking away. If I'm forced to draw down then its already at a point of no return. But I carry a 10mm..so really doesnt matter what round.
perhaps you should turn all your weapons in as they are way overkill compared to a slingshot.........
I believe the term you were trying to use is "inoperable". Ugh. Illiterate people trying to sound intelligent in a debate are very tedious and frustrating to me.
the intro without that music is waaaaaay better! please keep it that way!
this round does less damage than an HP 22
Great video. I would like to see what happens to a nice big piece of beef with the rip rounds.
Pure BS. loses most of it's weight straight off, doesn't penetrate deeply enough. only 1/4th of the weight goes through. Better off with a good hollowpoint that flowers out and created a bigger wound channel.'
whats the difference between dead and dead?? The size of the mess there is to clean up?
Too much penetration and your killing those behind your target. Hell we could get FMJ if you wanted penetration then you could get that multi-kill streak toward getting that attack chopper
That first shot was awesome.
music sucks
Looks very promising. Might be boring on the high speed but would like to see the gel covered in 4 layers of denim test.
awesome ...I'm watching just for the slow motion and music ...better than some movie directors
Great Vids.. this Amno is Sick. Love it
Never would have though watching three shots would be so cool and interesting!
Glad to see you delve into the hoopla surrounding these rounds. I'm still not sure I'm convinced they are more than just a gimmick round.
Really like the gel testing, maybe some other calibers and weapons with gel testing and variations. Good stuff!
That's a gnarly round bro...
