@@johng.2305 EV depreciation is a short term issue caused by continued tumbling new prices and increased performance, typical of any new tech. Once mature, EVs with their lower maintenance, lower running costs and longer life will have lower depreciation than ICE cars. That’s economically inevitable.
@WillBecker I think batteries will always deteriorate faster than an internal combustion engine therefore you are wrong on this one, atleast for the foreseeable future.
This video is stupid. If he didn't want to use a funnel that is his problem. The guy has a 40,000 dollar Tesla and worried about this kind of nickel dime stuff. Ridiculous.
15 minute charge, because you paid an electrician $4000 to install your fancy home charging system. All the purposely-hidden costs to skew the true cost of these things.
@@ikingipapa it can cost that much though. Depends on a whole heap of factors and is more of an edge case with your number being more representative of an average number here, if a little on the lower end of things so your point still stands. Figured I'd get in before you get a foolish reply.
Most Tesla owners couldn’t do the install themselves or they would electrocute themselves trying. 400 dollars for an electrician to run a 240v circuit and install the outlet, maybe if it were right next to the breaker panel. You didn’t mention the cost of the charger. The only reason to buy a Tesla is if you really don’t drive outside the city.
@av8rgrip I didn't mention the charger, I specifically said install. The charger is 420 tho. Oh and no I don't drive over 300 miles a day but neither do most people.
@@ikingipapa the point that the OP was making is still valid. There are hidden costs to owning an electric car and not all of it is dollars and cents. Can’t just be honest with people anymore, always gotta push the narrative. 110v charge can take days, 240v 6-8 hours, super charger 30 minutes. I’ve watched Tesla owners waiting in line for hours at a six bay charging station. Not to mention all the people in the news last winter whose teslas were DOA expensive paper weights. Or the areas where the infrastructure is failing because of electrical demand. Or the strip mining to make the batteries, or the replacement and disposal. Or the hidden costs of increased electricity rates due to demand and the cost of heating or cooling your home. Our electric rates have gotten so out of balance that my new high efficiency heat pumps never reach the economic crossover savings of heating with electricity vs heating with the natural gas backup system, not even close. And don’t even get me started on vehicles like the F-150 lightning.
And insane cost of replacement battery? And that it won't charge or run well in freezing temps? Or that most electricity used to charge it is produced by burning coal or other fuels? Or that it would have been more environmentally friendly to repurpose on older car so that its materials don't end up in the landfill or water supply? Or that the cobalt used to make batteries for them are mined by slaves or at minimum indentured servitude in Africa and that to mine the other materials needed we need to blast the earth apart and there are hazardous byproducts that can ruin the environment? I could go on, but yeah, electric cars are awesome.

@AddyKnows I've heard horror stories, it's good when it's under warranty, but if it isn't, I heard they go for $18k to replace. I'd think it would be better to have a few batteries and easy to swap out or something, like pull up to a station and swap the battery out kind of thing.
Not talking about warranty replacement. The unavoidable cost after the warranty expires will cancel all the savings in maintenance, and until it's replaced the battery range will be degrading several percent per year. The only way to avoid that cost is to sell the car, which is why depreciation is so high.
@cottawalla battery degradation just like mpg. No difference. It also depends whos buying. I don't travel far, no more than 3-4 road trips yearly. Unsure why people think the battery will bust after warranty. Plently of Teslas with original battery with well over 100k.

@@Crazy_Dashcam_Videos 2 seconds? On a road trip I stopped 0 times for fuel in the same distance that my cousin’s Tesla had to stop 3 times for hours at a time. Who’s the one saving time?
It all depends on your usage. We use an EV for short journeys (up to 100 miles or so) so charging takes about 30 seconds to plug in and another 30 seconds to unplug, don't care how long it takes because we're in bed. Because of our numerous low mileage journeys in winter, gasoline would tend to go off and the cat and EGR would quickly foul. Horses for courses.
Experts say to take the least amount of time charging to only charge to 80%. The last 20% takes much longer. How long it takes depends on if it's a fast charger, and how low they're drained when starting the charging.
@@fredflintstone8048 How long the last 20% takes is very vehicle dependent, our charges at about 5kW for the last 10% but 0-80% on a 100kW charger takes 35 minutes. If you are doing long distances on motorways, battery capacity isn't even that important, charging rate is. It makes little difference if you have to charge for an hour every 200 miles or half an hour every 100, except that a half hour break every hour and a half is better than an hour every three hours. But if you can charge at 200kW peak rather than 100, your total stop is only half as long.
I drive my cars for 200k miles…then give them to one of my kids to drive into the ground. One son is driving my 2012 GTI with 250k miles. My model 3 is at 85,000 miles so…I have a long way to go. Resale is irrelevant if you make wise financial decisions.
@@johncahill3644 What about the mining of cobalt and lithium, and the disposal of used batteries, and the fires that burn out of control in parking garages under office buildings?
If u own an electric car and it's in an accident in the u.k ....if you are injured inside or the cars alight and you can't get out ....the police won't touch it until the fire brigade has arrived . Be wary of these cars .
The materials that are used to make the batteries burn very hot, and the worst thing you can do with those fires is put water on them. Fire fighters don't try and stop the fires in the cars, rather they cool as much as they can around the cars to try and prevent spreading the fire. If your EV even gives a hint that it might be catching on fire, get out of it and as far from it as you can. Don't park it in a garage.
My battery is at a roughly 75 kWh capacity. At a roughly 95% charging efficiency, it would take approximately 79.2 kWh to charge it from 0% to 100%. My energy rate is $0.12904/kWh. So, it would cost $10.22 to get from 0% to 100%. No one drives an electric car like this, so to add just 15% of charge, it would cost $0.706494 per day.
How cold are winters in Chicago? I'm really curious to learn. My brother has a Tesla in Austria and I never heard him complain it doesn't work in the snowy mountains.
It's true. Cold weather is an enemy of every EV. Tesla's have liquid warming circulation systems for the batteries, but the pumps and the heaters to make them work use battery power. If you live in colder climates you might want to stay away from EVs. Especially if you have longer distances to drive.

Yes and all that diagnostic. It's more expensive to service a milk float. Did I mention the batteries if you have a collision they want to replace the car. I much prefer driving a proper car. I've no plans to ever buy something that isn't up to standard.
Yeah so? Those are not exclusive to EVs in every car you have to do similar maintenance. Only difference is in ICE car you'd have to do a lot more, for example an engine tune up + replace spark plugs at 40K 80K 120K ect. instead of if motor drive oil change.
That happens in California as well. A lot of people have dumped their EVs while they could still get some money back out of them and gone to hybrids. Why would I want to do that while I have better things to do? And I don't even own a Tesla. Nor do I want to. For very long distance drive, let's say more than 500 miles in one go, are ice cars still the better option. Anything else the EV is just better. Less noise, less smell, better performance, easier to drive, easier to maintain, less stuff that can break, easier to create your own "fuel". You can easily live off grid with an EV for an extended period of time. Ice cars constantly need a lot of infrastructure to be around and functional to operate. They are dinosaurs about to die out, but not quite being aware of it yet ...

Cold weather is the enemy of any battery. It reduces the capacity. On top of that the batteries need to be kept above a certain temperature and have liquid passages around the batteries for heating them as well as cooling them when fast charging. The batteries must also run the heater and the pumps to circulate the liquid on top of the fact that their capacity is reduced.

Check the manual. Servicing your brakes is a must after a year, that goes double if you're in an area that gets road salt. Take off the wheels, take the pads out and clean and lube all relevant parts. My Model 3 Performance keeps having issues with corrosion on the discs. I switched to different pads, that solved the issue for me. Also make sure to do an alignment check every 20k miles or so and have someone look for the upper control arms, those tend to be absolutely shot by around 30-40k miles, which also throws out your alignment. I'll get the first round of replacement under warranty, after that I will put in aftermarket Nylon bushings and a KW Suspension. There are still thousands of 6-12+ year-old EVs with 150-250k+ miles on the road or on the used market today with about 80% of their original battery capacity. Plus, I believe it is federally mandated (in the US) for auto makers to provide EV batteries with a minimum 8 year 100k mile warranty on new EVs. -- And before you dismiss me as a Tesla stan, I actually don't even like Tesla (for numerous reasons), I just do my research. In fact, Tesla has a tendency to trick their customers into buying a $15k new battery because there was a 'fault in the battery not covered by the warranty' when actually it was a simple failure of a sensor or something inside the battery pack. It's like a $50 part that could be fixed by removing and opening the battery, replacing the part, and putting it all back together. Take it to an EV repair shop like Electrified Garage (Rich Rebuilds on YT is the co-owner of that shop) and you could have it fixed for under $1k. So no, EV batteries rarely need replaced. What you save on Gas and Maintenance is cancelled out with higher insurance premiums, higher road tax/registration renewals, unchanged cost to refuel as its just reframed as an electricity bill, and more often changed tires. In face value you think you’re saving money because you don’t see the expenses up front. When I check year over year on my annual expense report, its surprisingly unchanged. The only noticeable difference is that I spend more time at gas stations to charge my car during road trips. Thats based on my idle timer.
Most people need a new engine during that timeframe IF they even keep a car that long. So let's see if you still have your car that's not upgradeable in any way and will be slower and more costly from brake rotors & discs maintenance, transmission, engine and other miscellaneous maintenance. I'm willing to bet this Tesla will cost less than your car in the long run. Now go back to your mom's basement and tell her I said thanks for the other night😂
Most EV’s don’t need a new battery. It lose charge but doesn’t mean loses all the charge. I save $350 on gas every month and $4k a year c ok loaded to my old ice car which requires $400 in gas every month. What’s even better is I save time. 3-5 minute to fill up gas while it takes me less then 10 second to plug it in.
If you live in warm climate where it doesn't freeze or snow, like here in FL The best thing you can use is Distilled Water for your windshield washer fluid!
Good point. You could add a little dishwasher soap and leave out all the harmful chemicals. I live in Canada where that's not an option. Almost got into an accident one time during the first winter freeze when I forgot I had summer wiper fluid in my car Froze my entire windshield and couldn't see shit lol
Got it, so we're just ignoring the brakes. I could be wrong but I could almost guarantee there's oil in there somewhere. At least some sort of bar oil for the electric motors. Grease on the axles. I got a feeling and there's more to it. Wonder how much it cost to replace your ABS sensors if one of them goes bad.😂
@jeremyjudkins that depends on how good you are at driving, or if you are rich enough/in enough debt for full self driving. Manual breaks will engage if you break hard enough.
Brakes in electric cars last way longer because of regenerative braking. Unless you drive like an absolute maniac (or disable regen for some strange reason), chances are your brakes will last several times longer than in a gas car

The fact Hertz dumped all their Teslas because the maintenance cost was too high contradict your claims. It's a fact EVs wear tires and breaks faster because they weigh more. While you didn't need periodic oil changes you pay more for the big ticket items.

@fishwhistler7224 Drove mine 307TKM so far, battery still fine. None of my ICE cars lasted longer than 350TKM, so I'm pretty confident my EV will beat that.
Actually, you were required to do service on teslas by tesla until 2020 or so. They didn’t send out a statement concerning a drop of service. They just stopped mentioning services every 30k miles. The service included differential oil changes, a/c dry packs, tip off fluids etc. I remember them charging 700-1000.
No no, the expensive part comes when you go 10 years And you have to replace you battery, if you do. Ppl would rather buy a new Tesla that replace the battery. Is that in the marketing with all the "good" things about a Tesla? Or do you think they mighta left it out on purpose? Guarantee the battery AND replace it if it dies. Then I'll consider it again. But not for cold weather areas. You know what cold weather does to batteries, right?

Most Tesla owners couldn’t do the install themselves or they would electrocute themselves trying. 400 dollars for an electrician to run a 240v circuit and install the outlet, maybe if it were right next to the breaker panel. You didn’t mention the cost of the charger.

Do you seriously expect an honest answer?
How long does it take to charge the battery? Cuz filling up my gas tank takes 5 mins tops, from empty to full
How's your resale value?

Cold weather is the enemy of any battery. It reduces the capacity. On top of that the batteries need to be kept above a certain temperature and have liquid passages around the batteries for heating them as well as cooling them when fast charging.

Finally make sure to take out your air filters and remove debris behind them, if leaves start to accumulate moisture gets trapped and you will have issues.
