Nice video, I think Suffolk engines are stronger and more reliable than Villiers as I never saw a Suffolk's coil failed but plenty of Villiers with failed coils, also having a woodruff key on the crank and flywheel you can't go wrong with the timing. Shame about this 98cc, I hope the 75cc will fit and this machine will be saved. Good luck and I look forward seeing the future episodes.
Hi, Thanks The cast iron Suffolk engines are a quality easy to work on engine. In it's defence , the BSA / Villiers sloper is a bit of an exception , it does have a keyed flywheel and the coils on those don't often fail, however the Villiers 2 strokes and quite a lot of there 4 strokes have no keyed flywheel and coils as you say often fail. The spare engine is up and running , and probably cutting the Cricket Wicket this weekend. I should have done a Video. Thanks for your comments.
Amazing how a small insignificant part can spell death to a plain bearing engine! It might be worthwhile removing the oil fill plug and peer inside with a torch and just ensure the dipper is there on the replacement engine.
Hi Herby, Yes just something as small as that can wreck the engine. Funny you should say about my spare engine, i took the sump off, and nearly didn't , guess what ? the dipper was also sitting in the sump!!! Luckily i think it had not been like that for long, as all was good with con rod and crank. I fitted a second hand dipper and gave that spare engine a service, and is now on the mower, i should have done another video on that , but did run well , with no rattles. Thanks for watching.
Im not quite half way through the video yet but i was thinking main bearings on the crank and is there a possibility someone ran it low on oil and topped it up after damage has already been done?
It might be heresy to write this, ever tried one of these chinese clones of the honda engine in a atco/suffolk chassis? I have a few atcos/ suffolks and find the engine / starting and running to be very poor . For about £100 I am tempted to try one just for the improved recoil starting.
Hi, I have fitted some of those Chinese engines to other machines before, and most are really quite good, they won't last like a Honda, but are a lot cheaper. The Loncin and Lifan seemed the better ones. If you are not worried about keeping the mower original , a replacement Chinese would be the answer. If your suffolk engines are the cast iron type, with an overhaul you should be able to get them running / starting well. Sadly the later Aluminium suffolks are quite different, horrible things. Thanks for watching.
Very good video done by the best 😎
