Lawnmower Jones the UA-cam channel started nearly two years ago with a video of my Suffolk Corporation. That was probably going to be a one off video, however I enjoyed doing it and got quite a lot of interest which spurred me on to make more vintage mower videos.
I hope my videos are helpful and informative to anybody restoring or repairing vintage/antique lawnmowers. I think this is a great hobby and is affordable to all. Thank you for your support!

That ratchet system is totally different to an ajax , did it get used on the Marquis ? Any idea how much more expensive the Certes was compared to an Ajax?
Hi, yes the certes has a very different ratchet system to the Ajax and the Marquis different again. mind you all versions do the same job. I am not really sure the cost of a Hand Certes when new, but would guess a lot more than the Ajax's which could be bought for about £12 in the Mid 60s. Thanks for your comments.
Great Rick hardly any play in the rollers at all. I had to use some sort of Metal based filler on my certes shaft as well and it does the job. I do still worry a bit about using grease instead of oil on these mowers due to eventual clogging in the oil delivery tubes as warned of by the Certes Manuals but very much looking forward to seeing the paint job now. If its too nice the owner won't want to use it!
Hi Martin Yes the roller seemed to come out well in the end with little up and down movement and the new freewheel ratchets sound and feel nice. I nearly used that metal filler on both parts of the shaft, but one side was more warn than the other, but did take a lot of work to weld and file to shape. Funny you say that about not wanting to use it when done, the owner has contacted me and asked not to paint the front roller as he wants to use it, and why not! Thanks Richard.
Looking great, looking forward to seeing the next episode.
Hi, As always these things take longer than expected , hopefully will be worth the effort in the end. Thanks for watching,
Great job with the new freewheel ratchets Richard top marks! If I had known you could get those I would have bought some for my Certes restoration. Looking forward to seeing the end result of this marvellous mower!
Hi Martin. Just a stroke of luck really , i bit of digging on the internet. I haven't got the green Paint yet but will do thanks to your help. I think you still have the disease, you are not over it ! Thanks for your comments.
What good news!!! My order will be in tomorrow!! Looking forward to seeing completion of this mower!! Brilliant job!! Cheers!!!
Hi, Yes was good to get those new freewheel ratchets, and once the shaft has been repaired it should be a good roller. Thanks for watching.
Awesome job !!!!!!!
Hi, glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for promoting the OLC hoodie again; are the blue latex gloves specific to the Anglo-Paris ? ! I agree with swopping over the halves of the cylinder bearings; that has been my experience in the past. For highlighting the cast script I favour a paint pen. Nice firm flat ' nib ' that floats over the lettering without run or overspill.
Good evening Squire. Most welcome, all for a good cause. Yes blue gloves for a blue mower! A good tip, i swapped the 2 top bearing half's over and did make a lot of difference. I am back on the 16" Certes now, as i need to put customers first! Thanks for your comment.
Couldn’t of come at a better time. I recently bought a certes mk12 and can’t wait to start the renovations on it. Looking forward to learning all I can as you truly know what you are doing! Also I’m dealing with the same exact problem with my rear roller!
Hi Samuel, Very nice mowers , i am sure you will enjoy working on it , and hopefully you have some grass to use it on at the end. The next video on this mower will be the rear roller overhaul, so hopefully it will be some help to you. Thanks for watching.
It's worth a try, take the two top halves of the split bearing out and swap them over, they may have accidently got swapped and no doubt over time they've worn to be a matched pair.
Hi Herby Thanks, am using the new Mics so the sound should be fairly good. Yes good point , worth swapping the bearing tops over, nothing to lose, otherwise i may get a little fine valve grinding paste and lap them in a bit. Thanks for watching.
Nice to sit and watch with a cup of tea and a biscuit...
Yes ,no truer word said, you have the Generator and kettle to go with it! Thanks for your comment.
I have a question for you i have a siba recoil starter on my ransomes certes motor mower.i did strip it down because it is difficult to ingauge is this because the felt washers are dirty with oil! The paws seem okay
I meant engage ie slipping
Hi , Yes i know just what you mean. There are quite a few reasons why those Siba recoils slip. Yes if the fibre washers are very greasy is one. The spring is weak , or not the correct one ( Sometimes you can stretch them ) You may want to check that the Pawl holder is in the correct way, as there is a right and wrong way. I am happy to send you a picture if you are not sure? Lastly if the Aluminium starter cup is warn, sadly it doesn't have to be much on those to make them slip. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
Sound is much better, personally I'd go with the original ratchets in the rear roller, I don't think there's much to gain replacing them unless of course the bearings are corroded. You can replace them if your adventurous but beware! They are a pain to get back together.
Hi Herby , Thanks worth spending the money , hopefully the new mics will really come into there own when there are other noises in the back round. Yes i am not going to strip the ratchet sprockets, they are warn, but work fine. The customer is trying to get some better ones , so will shelf it for now. Thanks for watching.
Nice film ,doing a restoration on a Mk3 Ajax , hopefully you will be able to give it some use before its too late this season.
Hi , Thanks, i am also a big fan of the Ransomes Ajax, for a domestic mower they do give a very good finish, and a pleasure to use! Yes would be nice to give the Certes a go on the grass before the season is out. Thanks for watching.
Another enjoyable video, Thank you!! It will always be easier the second time around !! The new mics are very good!! Cheers, Colin.
Hi Colin, Thank you. I have had many Ajax's apart, but this is the first Certes Mk8 . Glad you thought the mics are good. Thanks for your comment.
what is the hight of cut on this ransomes certes? Currently i mow with an ajax, but the certes look amazing !
Hi, I ended up setting the front roller quite high, but didn't measure the height of cut. The Certes will cut very low, probably 4mm to 15mm something like that. The Ajax is a better machine for domestic grass cutting as it will go up much higher and would cope with slightly longer grass. Thanks for your comment.
Great mowers restored one myself
Hi , Yes very well made mowers and would cost a Kings Ransomes if made new today! Thanks for your comment.
Success. Removed the flywheel on mine this afternoon. The purpose made puller was a godsend and it came easily, thankfully. I've also cleaned and gapped the Lodge spark plug (hopefully I can reuse this). I now need to check points and condenser.
Hi Tabitha Yes having the correct tools make the job much easier. Cleaned and set points, with a good condenser and coil should get you a good spark. Don't forget to check your HT lead, they can be also dodgy or to short and can be replaced if needed. Thanks for your comment.
@@lawnmowerjones3160 Yes, indeed. Will probably replace HT lead, condenser etc, as may save potential problems in the long run. Do I need to be careful to check position of engine before removing the condenser, HT, coil assembly etc so as not to lose correct timing? (22 degrees from top dead centre according to handbook).
Awful display or working mowers you don't walk that fast when mowing grass with the cylinder mowers! I have spent 45 years in the horticulture trade
Looks fantastic. Yes, yours has the same 75cc engine as my Suffolk. Engine type: 75G14, Model no: 1C. The serial number stamped on the side of the engine casing is: 102 950. Could the 9 and the 5 indicate that it's a 1959 version? Mine also has the alloy recoil starter fitted, which is surprising for an earlier model. This may sound a daft question, but is it alright to run these on the modern E10 fuel?
Hi, Thank you. Yes sounds like yours is an early one also if it looks the same as my one. Mine has got a 5 figure engine number and is painted black, later they were painted silver then grey. It doesn't, on mine seem to have any connection with dates, but on the 6 figure it may do, and i should really look into it. but quite likely, if yours has a recoil , they didn't fit till the late 1950s , so your engine numbers could mean it is a 1959 model as you say. E10 , yes it will run E10 , but i would recommend the Super unleaded E5 , as the E10 has a very short life and will gum up your carburettor quickly if left in. Thanks for your comments.
@@lawnmowerjones3160 Thanks, I'll make sure I use E5. I must also purchase a flywheel puller. Is there a specific thread type required (imperial?) and where is the best place to obtain one, please?
@@SuperTabitha22 Hi, Yes the E5 is worth using. There is a guy on Ebay selling some nice looking pullers, Item no 256632101291 Or you could use part of your recoil pawl hub spacer , i did that on my video, Early Suffolk Tear Down. Thanks for your comment.
@@lawnmowerjones3160 Thanks, found it. Hope to remove the engine cowl tomorrow to see which particular flywheel it is, to ensure I get the correct puller (one of the Suffolk flywheels requires longer screws, which the seller has). Have coated the wooden front rollers with raw linseed oil today for preservation.
@@SuperTabitha22 Hi ,Glad to here. If it is the very early flywheel it will be the 3 mounting puller, otherwise the 2 mounting puller. Just remember the nut is a Left handed. Good call with the linseed oil, they will last longer and look better.
Fantastic video.. what a professional you are..
Hi Mick, Why thank you. Mind you not easy to make much on these kinda jobs, the hours just go on and on, as you know. Let me know when you want a visit. Thanks Richard.
Thank you for the video nice close ups
Hi Andrew Thank you, am trying to keep the camera steady and get some detail in. Thanks for watching.
It's worth mentioning, when driving a bearing into a hollow, drive the outer race and when driving onto a shaft drive the inner otherwise you will ruin the bearing.
Hello Herby Yes you are correct that what i was doing, a nice big socket. Thanks for watching.
Fascinating to watch. A true master at work 👍
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it, hopefully it will be worth the effort. Thanks for watching.
Great condition of mowers I was there on the Saturday had a great day. If ever you want to do a film if my collection at Copped Hall please do contact me.
Hi Roy, Yes thanks it was down to the members of the Old Lawnmower Club. Everyone brought something which made a great show. Thanks yes would love to come and film your collection one day. Thanks for your comments.
Hi mate, love your video, i also have this mower which was recently serviced, it cuts beautifully along the whole length of the blade (paper included) & is just touching the strike plate nicely. The problem i`m having is it seems to leave serrations in the grass even though i cut the lawn every day or so. Would you have any ideas why this is so & anything i could do stop this ( i do cut low but very often). Many Thanks. oh I also have a Jp Maxees mower too which is also fantastic !
Hi, Yes the Ajax is a very good choice. I think what you are talking about is called Ribbing The Ajax has a Six bladed cylinder, even if it is sharp and cuts Paper , when cutting low you may get Ribbing. It is down to the amount of blades and gearing ( Cuts Per Yard ) To get away from Ribbing you may have to go on to a Fine turf machine like a Certes which normally has about nine blades and will achieve more cuts per Yard. One thing that would be worth checking on your Ajax is the Cylinder bearings, If they are warn and have Up and Down movement, that will cause Ribbing. If so you will need to replace the bearings. Hope this helps. Thanks.
@@lawnmowerjones3160 many thanks for your help it`s much appreciated & i will check the bearings for sure 👍👍
Lovely job
Hi , Thank you, luckily a very good turn out of mowers. Thanks for watching.
What a great video... And well presented... Ta mate
Hi Mick. Thank you, but i need to remember to take the Microphones with me for those out door videos. Hope you had a good Holiday. Thanks LMJ
What a treat to see a copy of the first mower ever made! What a great little Mitchell mower that I wish I could use these days. Watching your videos, I see and understand more and more that there are old mowers that, because of the way they were made, can sometimes outclass many modern mowers with their plastic parts and similar "marvels" of technology...
Hi , Yes the basic design hasn't really changed. The Mitchell mower is a lovely piece of engineering and runs like a swiss watch, Ransomes did something very similar and very much like the Mitchell mower , very well made and built to last. Sadly as you say , most modern machines have lots of plastic and not designed to last. Thanks for your comments.
Great machines; I've recently purchased an earlier 14" model with green handlebars. It has the dog clutch and alloy recoil starter (possibly one of the first to be fitted with a recoil?). Please can you tell me where I might obtain a copy of the A4-size maintenance manual, illustrating the different models? It would be very useful to have. Thanks
Hi , Yes as you say great machines and well made for something made for the domestic market. If you have the green handles , it is an early machine. The Dog clutch and recoil makes it a bit later, hopefully you still have the nice early 75cc engine on yours. I got my parts book from a guy who was in the trade and was giving up. I have seen them on Ebay before, so probably worth looking. Thanks for your comments.
@@lawnmowerjones3160 Thanks; I'll look out for one. Do they give the torque settings for head bolts, etc? Always as well to know these things, just in case I ever need to rebuild the engine.
@@SuperTabitha22 Hi, keep looking and i am sure you will find a parts manual as they do come up, and also owners manual which do have quite a bit of technical information. I have not seen any torque settings for the engine head bolts, they have 5/16 unc screws, i would say 15-20 Ft lbs. Thanks for your comments.
One of your employees cursed us out
good evening /good day. You better explain a bit more, only half the story there.
Ciekawa kosiarka💪💪,pozdrawiam z Paryża😇
Have you done anything with it, worth restoring
Hi, I have only just finished the grass box and hope to give it a run on some grass very soon. Yes i think it was worth saving. Thanks for your comment.
found the videooo!! thank you!!!
@@shion_lwn great hope it is useful.
Fantastic video! I restored MK4 last year. I had a sharpening shop to grind the blades, but they also grinded parts on the bottom since they did not remove the cylinder. How can I backlap Ajax ??? I need to sharpen the blades and don’t know what to do 😢 I want to sharpen it on my own. I have been searching how to backlap Ajax online but it is very difficult to find any info
@@shion_lwn Hi, yes sounds like back lapping is going to be the answer for you. I have done a video on back lapping a Ransomes Ajax. ( A bit of back lapping and bad soup ) It is not difficult to do , and will most certainly get your Ajax cutting well. Thanks for your comment.
@lawnmowerjones3160 oh backlapping is possible on Ajax? ah, I believe one or 2 nuts on the gears are counter-clock for tightening..I forgot about that. so it is possible ^^ I saw online that someone used a pulley belt or something to backlap..no clue how it works. could you please tell me the link of your video of backlapping ajax? I went through your video list and I couldn't find it.. thank you for your advice!
@@shion_lwn Hi, yes quite easy to do. Just grinding paste, and a variable speed drill old paint brush and a socket adapter needed. Not sure how to forward the line link. But the title. Bit of Back lapping and bad soup . It was done about a year ago. Hope this helps.
@@lawnmowerjones3160 ok! Thank you:) I guess the process is pretty much the same as any other reel mowers. Awesome thank you sir.
Thanks for another very good video!! Amazed at how easy those screws came out for you!! Looking forward to the next ones especially curious to see what happens with the sprockets in the reaer roller!1 Cheers, Colin.
Hi Colin, Thank you , I didn't expect the blade screws to come out quite so easily. Was ready to get the welder on them! My feeling we will have to re use the roller sprockets. Thanks for your comment.
@@lawnmowerjones3160 I was fortunate enough to pick one of these up (Mk8) yesterday, `Free to good home` so now have two to strip down!! Do the sprockets strip down at all? Cheers, Colin.
@@MrStoko Hi, That was lucky, normally most of those Ransomes Certes , even in fairly rough state make good money. Those roller sprockets do come apart, I am fairly sure the centre cover does unscrew, but they are very fiddly and easy to lose parts. I would say it probably would be better to soak them, with some sort of lubricating oil and get the working like that. Thanks for your comment.
Maybe find a way to put the microphone closer for the long shots? I can barely hear you from the back of the garage.
Hi, yes good point. Thanks for watching.
Been there done this there is no need to split the mower in 2 If you get a copy of the schematics instructions still available on line just saying keep up the good work 👍
Hi, Yes a good design , not many mowers can have the rollers removed without splitting the side frames. I will know for next time. Good to give the whole thing a good clean while in bits though. Thanks for your comment.
Yes when you start to assemble.you May need the instructions I messed it up putting it back together 😞 looking forward to the next episode 😊
@@thomasroughton5345 Hi, Yes lots to get wrong, i do have Parts and user manual. Thanks for watching.
Can"t Wait For The Next Episode
Hi , Thank you, it should be assembling the roller next. Thanks for watching.
Fancy.... Looks to be in good condition.. and coming apart nicely
Thanks, You can't beat a Ransomes!
@@lawnmowerjones3160 apparently not.... Lol
Looking forward to the next installment
Hi, I think it will be re assembling the rear roller next. Thanks for your comment.
Great video. Can't wait to see effect when the job is finished!
Hi, Thank you , i am enjoying doing it. A very worth while mower. Thanks for watching.
Another way of getting the bearing out of the carrier is, heat the carrier up smoking hot then using welding gloves pick up and slam the carrier down ,hole side down! On a hard surface. You may have to do it a couple of times. Those bicycle sprocket type drive mechanisms always seem to have tons of play but a thorough clean and flush out I'm sure they will be OK.
Hi Herby. Yes another option, a bit smelly though with the grease. Think of those Lungs! Funny you say that about those sprockets, i have just got a new pair of Hayter harrier roller sprockets out of stock , and as you say they have play from new. I think , as they work Ok , a good clean up and will re use. Thanks for your comments.
Many thanks for a first class instructional video again!! Proving to be very helpful and informative!! Will look forward to the next one! Cheers, Colin. P.S. What brand of gloves are you using please? They look very good!!
Hi. Most welcome, i am glad you enjoyed it. Yes there will be more on the MK8 Certes. The gloves are Sealey Black Diamond Grip, Powder Free and they do most sizes. They are not that cheap but do seem to last. Thanks for watching.
Just like to say what an excellent channel you have A few years ago I restored a 14 inch ransomes certes on mine the solid front roller runs on tapered cones at each end and has a oiler on one end The rear roller ratchet is a bit tricky to assemble as its full of ball bearings looking forward to the next episode Regards carlo valli
Hi, Thank you for the kind words. It sounds like you did a proper job of your 14" Certes if you stripped down the front roller as well. Yes the rear roller ratchets are warn, i think i may open one up to see if anything can be done. Thanks for watching.
I find, if a bearing moves on a shaft then gets stuck, it helps to drive the bearing back on and clean the way off with emery cloth and check for any tiny marks or damage and deal with them then the bearing comes off pretty easily.
Hi, Yes that works well. I did use a proper punch off camera and did come off ok, i did start rushing a bit at the end. Thanks for watching.
Another excellent video! Looking forward to the next one! (Perhaps two?) I have the exact same mower (Mk8) up for sale but have now decided to keep it and strip down etc. as per your example!! Hope you include the method to release the bottom blade from the blade carrier. Always a daunting job! Cheers, Colin. P.S. Did you have chance to look for a three point recoil for the Marquise please? Cheers!
Hi, Thank you, great to work on real quality. Yes i think there will be a few more video's on this machine. I don't blame you, if you sell it you will soon want another one! I did have a look for a spare Villiers 3 mounting recoil, sadly i don't but do have a spare 4 mounting Siba. Thanks for your comment.
Hello, Another very interesting video !! I am searching for a Villiers recoil ( Three point location.) as in this video. I wondered if you knew of one or where I might be able to get one from please? It is off engine No. F12-02-01 / 23353, Cheers, Colin.
Hi , I am glade you enjoyed it. They had a good run those 3 point Villiers recoils. I am not sure, but will have a look and see if i have a spare one. Thanks for watching.
Not the most fun job but definitely necessary well done sir 👍
Hi, Yes one of those jobs we have to do, but does make you smile when a customer brings a recoil in , in a bag and said i tried to put some new rope in and the spring flue out! Thanks for your comment.
