Though no longer a Catholic I still love this tune. As a Latter-day Saint I learned an even greater appreciation for the role that Mary and Joseph had to play in being the earthly parents of God's own son. It was a very special responsibility they shared together. And I have no doubt they gave the Lord younger siblings so that He could be an even better big brother to us all while still in His formative years.

I think it's two different pieces of different type, can't compare in this manner. Bach's prelude is a simple and flowing piece that is beautifully constructed. Gounod's melody is like a 'parody' in today's language, it's an interpretation that would surely make it loss simplicity but more adaptable in other genres, like as a theme in the film x+y (2014) and vocal piece Ave Maria
