Showing all of the views as extreme close-ups, makes it impossible to get a good sense of the construction process. Also, there is no view of the finished product.

Thanks, it’s fun to see stone work that I never experienced or knew the historic process.

    Very intresting video !
    Some questions doe
1: cant you is original sound of the guys working not mood music.
2 : the central fill over the vault seem to be dirt and stones ,then i capped with morter stones , why is not clean stone gravel and weak mortar mix used as fill?
In a country region with cold winders frost expansion could lift the roads stone slabs and cracks stuff ,frost heave safe draining fill would eliminate this risk. If this level off effort is put into the bridge, surely the fill could have been sifted and cleand of dirt .
3 . Why is the stone joints mortet afterwards?
The morter in the stone work is clearly( mostly )for making good contact surfaces between the stones not to glue them together, the morter stone fill behind the wall is the component holding the stonework and handling pressure from the loose fill inside the construction.
Mortning the joints on the outside surface , does make the bridge less nice estetetlicly. Is there any benefit to dong so , open joints would enable drainage of water if i got inside the construction. Or am i wrong?
The structure strength increase of morting the jointes
    Afterwards is probably not not
    Big at all.
I like the traditional workmenship here and that the valve forms are made off timber very educational.

So making the inner fill of the bridge more open for better drainage increases the lifespan of the structure? Good point, I'd never thought of that.

Unfortunately I have never built a stone or brick bridge but I have repaired and reinforced many ancient ones in Italy. Every time I removed the pavement and dug the filling of the joints was done with the material found on site. Usually it was compacted to the point of being waterproof and digging it was always very hard because with the machines you risk damaging the structure. I don't know if it was compacted while they were laying it or if it was the passage of traffic over the centuries. The grain size of the mortar changes depending on the size of the stones. The filling of the joints was also done differently. The brick vaults were laid at the same time as the mortar which was made with fine sand. The laying of the large stone ashlars was dry and the joints were filled afterwards with a coarse mortar. In some cases a sheet of lead was placed between one ashlar and the other.

      @@gordonpasha3126 intresting !
The reason I was asking about the material I that they are capping the fill with concrete and stone slabs to form a solid block structure with the sides. Very unforgiving if you get frost heave . The top would lift up track A regular stone laying in sand would manistch better with that kind of movement and thus not require as good fill. It's hard to say if the fill used is frost safe or not just looking on the video.

@@perstaffanlundgren Construction methods of a road embankment, the filling is a road embankment, depend on the materials available but also on the climate in which the bridge is built. From experience, I live in northern Italy and work in the Alps, the layer breaks that occur due to freezing, occur when the structure drops below -20C° -- 4 Fahrenheit for several days. The builders will know that in their area these climatic variations do not occur

    • @gordonpasha3126

@@perstaffanlundgren The reaction of the arch to the stresses of the moving load is a sinusoidal deformation along the entire development of the arch. If the arch does not have a uniform thickness, the reaction to the loads becomes unpredictable and damaging. You should not think that a bridge of adjacent stones behaves like a monolithic structure in reinforced concrete. In order for the arch to move freely, the filling inside must not be rigid.

As long as it is not shaking left and right, this stone bridge will basically not collapse, because the top stone presses down the lower stone with its weight.

So interesting. Wondering why no mortar on the butt joints except for the exterior finish just for looks? I know everything is held together by gravity because of the arch, but no mud on the butts and no rebar anywhere. They are real masters, but I’m just curious.

The wood was originally used to fix the position of the stones. When the topmost stone was lowered, the stones would get stuck due to the arch shape, and the weight of the upper stones would press down the lower stones.

this is women's problem they don't make things, and they have even given up knitting and cooking so they never feel like they have accomplished anything, many modern men are also like that, the satisfying feeling that you have created something that is of use, beauty and will be there longer than you is what makes life worth living, its your legacy,

Maybe you simply know the wrong women, or they don't tell you what they are making or you aren't listening. My mother worked as a graphic designer, creating books. My sister-in-law taught my brother and me how to lay stones and mix mortar. My daughter is a film producer. My wife is currently rebuilding a house she inherited.

Many people are like that, men , women and others🙄 the simple gift of the pleasure of satisfaction and accomplishment in simple endeavors has been replaced by a marketing driven deep seated need/desire to comply with marketable parameters so as to become one of the tribe, commercialism and consumption drive our economy's to provide us with all we need but at the same time it undermines and threatens our very being..........catch22.

Please make vertical videos are videos with an aspect ratio of 9:16, which means that the width is 9 units and the height is 16 units. This video size has become increasingly popular due to the advent of devices * and make the videos at normal speed and a full hour long, because speeding up videos is annoying to the viewers' eyes
