I remember seeing this segment about a hundred times in the '70s -- The Electric Company, a weekday show, used to repeat animated segments like this one three or more times a week until they were burned into our little noggins. This particular segment was among the first when the show hit the air in 1971. The vignette regarding the plumber with the heart condition wasn't the important part, at least as far as I was concerned. I remember thinking, at age nine, that the background music was among the coolest I'd ever heard. And these days, naturally, I am an enormous swing-and-jazz fan.
Their music was iconic. I'm a drummer now and Sesesme and EC were my introduction to jazz, and they knew what they were doing. Blues Clues came along at some point and really ran with the whole repetition thing. This comment is brought to you by the letter 'B'.

I don't think that this segment is shown any more?

I remember this great funny clip on the electric company. They did the samething on Captain Kangaroo. At my old job. There were lots of doors to open and close. You had to knock before you open them. I knocked on one door. Cindy said who is it? I said it's the plumber iv'e come to fix the sink. Cindy said come in. I said cool. I came in she said Hi. I said Hi and we both went back to work. They used to run Electric Company in the middle of the school day, and we all just soaked it in! Now, I'm trying to get my 5-year old great nephew into it. It's hard, dragging him away from his Spider-Man video games! And yes, I know Spider-Man's on Electric Company, too. So far, it doesn't really move him (yet)!

While I don't recall it, I wouldn't be surprised if it exists. EC apparently loved to do live-action nods to their cartoons, including this one. Incidentally, I remember Luis Avalos as the plumber who said that same line, after gallons of water were let loose on Morgan Freeman at his supper. Another live-action sketch, with "Buster Boy," had an actual parrot say the line, though obviously as a voiceover -- maybe Jim Boyd?
I never viewd it as he had a heart attack and died like several have said. I just more or less though he got SO fed up with repeating himself and thinking the "guy" inside was playing games with him, he just fainted out of exaustion of having to put up with the jokester inside.

Growing up in Massachusetts then moving down to SC and realizing that they nixed sidewalks and have a plethora of ditches. One tends to forget them on a beverage or 2. Next you are in one of those freaking ditches.

The other series I learned from was Schoolhouse Rock. I memorized the preamble to the Constitution & learned about grammar at Conjunction Junction.

When I taught first grade years ago, my students loved the Electric Company and this sketch was one of our favorites.

Loved that show - As a kid, I never got much out of Seseme Street, except for Grover. Electric Company had humor that adults can laugh at.

Thanks so much for this video! I just got reminded of this again, and LOVED re-watching it! Takes me back to a better, vanished time, when I was about 7 years old! They used to run Electric Company in the middle of the school day, and we all just soaked it in! Now, I'm trying to get my 5-year old great nephew into it. It's hard, dragging him away from his Spider-Man video games! And yes, I know Spider-Man's on Electric Company, too. So far, it doesn't really move him (yet)!
This was the best! I remember when it was new. We were big kids then, much too old for the Electric Company. We watched it for entertainment and loved it!

I remember there being a live action version of this too. Jim Boyd as the plumber. Anyone else remember this? Maybe my imagination.
While I don't recall it, I wouldn't be surprised if it exists. EC apparently loved to do live-action nods to their cartoons, including this one.
Incidentally, I remember Luis Avalos as the plumber who said that same line, after gallons of water were let loose on Morgan Freeman at his supper. Another live-action sketch, with "Buster Boy," had an actual parrot say the line, though obviously as a voiceover -- maybe Jim Boyd?
I never viewd it as he had a heart attack and died like several have said. I just more or less though he got SO fed up with repeating himself and thinking the "guy" inside was playing games with him, he just fainted out of exaustion of having to put up with the jokester inside.
That's how I have always interpreted it too.

Growing up in Massachusetts then moving down to SC and realizing that they nixed sidewalks and have a plethora of ditches. One tends to forget them on a beverage or 2. Next you are in one of those freaking ditches.

this little cartoon skit just randomly came into my mind today, so of course, I had to look it up on youtube. Not surprised it's here. This cartoon used to stress me out lol because the plumber got so upset.
It was on Sesame Street, but the animation was different and the plumber's/parrot's dialog was different too. It was:
"The plumber! -- I'm here to fix the pipes!"
Every time I hear someone say “who is it?” I think of this skit!!! 😂😂😂😂😂
