Wow! I remember rushing home from school to watch Sesame Street,The Electric Company and Batman. Even while doing my homework. These were the greatest kids programs of all time. Do you agree?
Yes I do!! I remember how surprised I was when my sisters told me Batman was basically making fun of Batman. I thought it was dead serious, and I didn't get what she meant. But now I totally get it!
Morgan Freeman has such a commanding voice, it's deep and yet reassuring and soothing as weird as that sounds. I've never listened to a audio novel, but I know if I ever did I'd like him to be the guy in the sound booth, he could read a phone book and make it sound interesting. He and James Earl Jones should have a voice off, Easy Reader against Darth Vader, now that would be a great battle.
This was my favorite show when I was a kid. My dad was stationed in Germany and the Electric Company and Sesame Street were of a handful of programs in English. I hated Sesame Street from as far back as I can remember. I loved this show. I was 4 when Morgan left the show and I remember watching Driving Miss Daisy in 91 and saying, " Oh my god, that's the guy from the Electric Company". He was my favorite on the show. If I was rich I would pay him to narrate a day my life.
Where were you in Germany? Our family was stationed in Kaiserslautern from 72 to 75. I'm always trying to find my classmates. I didn't recognize Morgan as being a Electric Company actor until I watched the movie Street Smart with Christopher Reeves.
We were stationed in Fort Bliss Texas 1979 that was the first time I seen electric company and Morgan Freeman and there was a show called Zoom back then too
Mr. Freeman...because of the richness in word development it is because of the Electric Company...I became an educator...Thank you for being an active participant to end illiteracy
MORGAN FREEMAN AND THE ELECTRIC COMPANY, the two are magnificent. Morgan Freeman is an actor that cannot be typecast. Hes played a detective in the movie "Seven", a prisoner in "The Shawshank Redemption", a chauffeur in "Driving Miss Daisy", God in "Bruce Almighty",and various other characters. And he's played them exceptionally well.
I watched the electric company as a kid and then I saw “lean on me” with Morgan and I was like holy crap that’s the dude from the show… Never forgot that voice
If you think about it, this could really be Peter Griffin, since they officiay exist in the same universe! Don't believe me? Well Spider-Man met Electric Company characters in the Spidey Super Stories comic, and then the Marvel universe had crossovers with the DC Universe, including Batman; Batman had a crossover comic with TMNT, and TMNT had a crossover with X-Files; Mulder and Skully from X-Files once appeared in an episode of the Simpsons, and in turn the Simpsons had a crossover with Family Guy! So there you go, same universe.
Loved this show as a kid. This is how I learned my Phonics and Reading. The songs and skits were so fun to watch! Also learned a lot from Schoolhouse Rock- especially my Multiplication tables!!
The voice on the phone is Jim Boyd, (the actor not the musician), he played Arthur Crank on the show and yeah...he sounds like he inspired the voice of Peter Griffin
I did not see this one as a kid. I started watching at 3 years old in 1973, so if something was phased out before that, I wouldn't have known about it until the UA-cam and DVD days. I remember other Mel Mounds things. In fact, I met Denise Nickerson at a Comic Con, and she sang the Sweet Sweet Sway to me in person.
Morgan's Mel Mounds was so legit that he could've Dee-Jayed on any radio station in America!! Still love "The Electric Company" to this day!! Great show. The only show to come even close to this classic was "The Great Space Coaster," which is a classic within itself.
I used to watch The Electric Company all the time I never knew Morgan Freeman was on the electric company I never even saw him I love Morgan Freeman I think he is one of the greatest actors on the planet that is so cool still sounds just like him that iconic Morgan Freeman voice one of the best actors in the world
Even though I was way past it's target audience as far as age I still enjoy watching this show back then. And the show had a great cast with Bill Cosby (Season One), Rita Merano, Lee Chamberlin and then unknowns Morgan Freeman and Irene Cara.
I remember this sequence, and how funny it was. Though Morgan Freeman wished he'd left The Electric Company earlier, he really showed his stuff on the show - his ability to play many different kinds of characters, and the gift for comedy seldom seen in the "serious" roles he moved on to. I only wish this clip could have included the actual Short Circus song, so I could hear how J. Arthur Crank reacted in the end. But thanks for posting this!
This show is where Morgan Freeman started acting back in 1971 at the age of 34, pretty amazing for a Late Bloomer. 44 years later, he's done some Amazing Performances !!!!
If you by acting mean on TV than it's true but he began acting in theater at his early age winning some nationwide competitions. MF turned down a drama scholarship at the age of 18 and joined US Air Force.
lethrneck4 dude u look a lot older than to have your first memories as these shows. i think you remember radio shows and thinking that war of the worlds was real lol.
Nelson Mandela was in prison roughly 10 years at this point. I wonder what he would have said if you could have shown him this clip and said, "This is the man who will play you in a film some day.
Holy crap i didn't know morgan freeman used to be younger!! Amazing!

TheCurmudgeon thank God I'm not the only one
Peter Griffin without the Quahog Accent.
It's Jim Boyd as J. Arthur Crank. Seth MacFarlane may well have patterned Peter Griffin's voice after Crank's, just not as p.o.'d.

Rollo Red You just gave Family Guy writers an great idea for a episode, and I'm sure they'll use this clip-not to mention Morgan Freeman a guest star.

on this character.
